"Every camel works at Christmas." So funny
I wish Lorne Michaels would write a book.
I can't even comprehend all of the events and people that he could tell some great (but not hurtful) stories about.
Mainly I would love to have all of his feelings about the greats that he helped launch.
Well his son is producing a documentary. That should be really interesting
@@chrism.ledoux1590
I like to read. Besides a book can cover so much more and as a bonus Dana can do the book on tape with his Lorne Michael impression.
I had to rewind that part several times when Lorne says “you don’t know why it catches on but then you run it into the ground” that was the funniest thing I’ve heard in awhile. He voiced what I was always thinking back then “why do people think this is so funny?” lol even though I was one of them
Holy Sh!t! Lorne Michaels? This was epic, I hope he returns again.
“… ran it into the ground.” Classic. 😂😂😂 Thanks Lorne ❤
Thank you for this podcast. It is wonderful to hear the voice and the stories.
This podcast is the best thing since Lights Out.
This was such an amazing interview! I wish you could have gone on for days. Such fantastic stories about the show I've watched from the beginning when I was in high school 50 years ago.
"The problem with making it look easy is that it looks easy. And it's your job to make it look easy." - my fave Lorne line, from Coms in Cars Getting Coffee.
David is one of the funniest people ever. He would be all laughs all the time to hang out with. What a great talent - deserved to be a much bigger star right at the top.
Totally!
He’s on the top with this podcast for sure!
Everyone on this earth needs to occasionally step back and thank Lorne Michaels for the half century of comedy production and star creation.
Whatever awards there are, don’t encompass what he’s done.
@percypercerton2125 I was just thinking much the same thing.
Thanks to Lorne!!
Well... 29-33 pretty solid seasons. Spread around. Still amazing.
being able to see the skits easily now. Many times during these 2 podcasts I paused and looked up the skit. Even if I knew the skit, I want to see it again after you guys are done discussing it.
Please continue to release Saturday Night Live seasons on dvd/blu ray/4k/physical media. Sincerely - the fans
It's so true that casts that aren't popular, are looked back on years later as great.
It's also casts that were popular. Every time a new cast starts, millions of people run to social media to say that SNL hasn't been funny since (insert favorite SNL cast members names' here) were in the cast. Lorne Michaels nailed it: people don't realize that they liked their preferred cast the best because that's when they were young, like high school or college ages. The show remains consistently funny nearly 5 decades on. I just watched the most recent episode, and all the new cast members got featured moments. It was a surprisingly funny episode, and the last two sketches in particular showed a kind of energy that bodes well for the coming season
Massive Headwound Harry is always the 2nd original Dana Carvey character that comes to mind when I try to mentally list original Dana Carvey characters, which is surprisingly frequent. The first being Church Lady, the third being Hans, then Garth, and now you know more trivia about me than anyone cares to know.
I just think of master of disguise when I think Dana carvey.
Turtle turtle turtle lol I will never forget that. Me and my brother used to watch that and just die on the floor
Awesome interview! You could get 20 episodes from Lorne!
33:16 I literally exploded with laughter. Caught me by surprise. 🤣🤣🤣
This was incredible!
I loved that sketch where he saved Conan from the glue factory
Really great interview with Mr. Lorne Michaels. Obviously you guys have a great show. Kinda wanted to hear you both ask, ‘so Lorne, what show would you say that you wanted me to just walk away, but come back next week.’
Glad they mentioned my favorite skits. The Continental with Walkin
Hey, Cheri was fantastic as Ross Perot. Wait a minute, Goodman as Linda Tripp, was spot on!
I learned something that I could not have anticipated. Lorne Michaels loves those nervous quick add-ins that David Spade drops because (seemingly) he can't help himself.
One of your most revealing conversations. The three of you show that you were in your element, and it wasn't just by chance.
first time ive ever heard Lorne talk, only heard everyone's impersonation.....now i just picture Dr Evil talking lol
"its that thing of what are you not allowed to say" is a pretty good one
Lorne came on toooo?! Wooo🎉🎉🎉 i have ten in a row to catch up on, awesome show🎉🎉🎉❤
I was in high school when SNL started and have watched every season forward. I do agree with Loren on how we judge the “best cast” on when we were in HS. But I truly love almost every season. Each year or group of years the cast add their own unique talents in different ways. I’m not sure SNL should go on after Loren (kind of like trying to replace Alex Trebek-you can but it’s never quite the same). 🥰
Mr. #LorneMichaels is IRREPLACEABLE. But SNL is a Saturday night institution with world wide di$tribution and I refuse to imagine a time without some new #SNL.
I'd just graduated the previous June. My mom started watching from the beginning and kept up with me for about the first five years. I've continued yes, through the non- Lorne years to the current. I've raised my now twenty somethings daughters, on SNL. Love this show! 💖
I understand the best class thing but I love all the cast members. I remember Dana and David when I was little and I think my high school days were the Will Ferrell days. I'm like you I love all of them.
It makes me mad when people say oh the show sucks now and it's too political but it's been the same the whole time. It's just the people themselves that have changed so they don't like the same things. I'll never get why people are so negative about it. SNL hasn't been funny in years I've heard that so much. That's just not true I laugh every show. Not every sketch is good I agree. I've watched a ton of old shows that are so dull and not funny but that's just how the show is. Each sketch is its own thing with its own audience it's aimed at. Not liking something is a you problem, not an SNL problem.
I started watching in the 7th grade (1978) after hearing a Senior talking with the lunch lady about the show. And I watched the reruns of the previous seasons. Bill Murray and Gilda Radner were my favorites. But boy was 80/81 awful. So boring, as well as sad to see. But then Eddie Murphy rescued the show. My favorite cast was the years with Hartman, Loviitz, Nealon, Myers, Carvey, Sandler, Spade ,Farley, Ferrell Shannon (1987 - 99?)
Great great great interview. SNL came out my senior year of High School. Not every skit works, but the ones that do are infamous very often. I have soooooo many favorite skits I can't even begin to start to list them. Love the podcast and hearing all about the behind the scenes stuff. Take care.
What a great guy, the image is one of power but he seems very sweet as we as brilliant. I wish you had talked about Norm
I so appreciate this podcast. I love comedy. I love you guys. And I have loved all of the casts of SNL I started watching the show starting with the first season. I remember coming home from work never having watched it before. I turned on the TV and Chevy was giving the news. And of course, the lines he was throwing out with the deadpan expression was killing me. I remember laughing so hard, I started crying. Never missed a show after that. Thank you for making me laugh.
I started tearing up listening to him talk about producing the show after Sandy Hook
This just scratched the surface of Lorne's career. If he wrote a book, it would need at least as many chapters as seasons. Not sure why the minutia of behind the scenes at SNL is so fascinating, but I could listen to this and this only.
Thank you for having Lorne on the show. After listening to both parts, I could listen to more. Bravo!
Such a treat to hear from Lorne!
I love when Dana imitates Lorne. He’s spit on 🤣
It was great to hear Lorne talk about the concert

The Emma Stone/Gilda Radner makes a lot of sense. This guy can’t help but me so interesting.
Never heard him interviewed, so many stories! 👍🏻
Lorne was just so natural. I feel like he didn't say anything he didn't believe. And he's dryly funny. I haven't enjoyed a podcast more than this one.
Great Lorne quote “don’t tell us what’s funny”
I could use a part 3-22 of this. cant get enough 😊
Dana! I don't remember saying that about Alec Baldwin!!! I did have to kiss him in lots of sketches so I felt like we'd already been on 5 dates!!! I'm glad he was not interested in me.
Victoria you were so fabulous on SNL. Thanks for the laughs..
You dodged that bullet Victoria
( I apologize, I was compelled)
Victoria when are you gonna do a show on
Fly on the Wall?
@@TimHesch I don't know! I guess when they ask me!!!
Love you on UHF! Please do a show in Philly or NJ
"Bear suits are funny. And bears as well!"
If Lorne writes a book, it should be titled "Every Camel Works at Christmas"
"Camels work at Christmas"
Wow, Lorne Michaels is hilarious dry, starting with the camel thingy he’s clearly having a good time. Dry interesting unique wit 😢 the hump got stuck in the ceiling tile.
I never heard of David spade before. He's actually pretty good 👍 😂😂😂😂
The whole interview I keep thinking of everyone's impressions of him. "It's that thing......."
Loved it😆
Lord Michaels! All hail Lord Michaels!
Joe Piscapo should take over for Lorne!
Dr. Evil does FLY!!!
I briefly met Mr. Michaels during dress rehearsal ... I was a guest of a crew member. He was polite he could see the excitement in my eyes being a musician standing there slobbering over Metallica rehearsing LOL. Thanks for letting me fanboy
Lorne is the Real Wizard of Oz, but you look behind the curtain and realize magic is real…we won’t even realize how good this is for years…
Amazingly sad that the one Beatle that didn't appear on SNL was John Lennon.
There are some SNL episodes and sketches that are not available to watch on RUclips. For example: David Spade's "Dick Clark Productions Receptionist" sketch and the Alec Baldwin "Greenhilly" and "The Young & The Youthful" sketches.
17:35 Put that on a loop. (Getting a little misty here...).
Future generations will appreciate Paul McCartney for who he actually is- the greatest genius of pop-rock! : D
Wish they talked to Lorne about his relationship with Pete.
I think David Spade has a great voice.
"Okay we will take a 20 min break and then start the podcast."
Dana’s Lovitz has a touch of Kate Hepburn.
Biggest surprise, producer- Tracy Morgan.
on wikipedia it says Alicia keys had "trademark cornrows" and it sunk my battleship
Never mind. Too many interruptions and I've heard him talk about all this before.
"I put Trump on SNL because I wanted to give nazis equal time."
"Oh we worship your comedy gifts!" - Spade and Carvey
the ice cream truck scene in the movie Electra Glide in Blue, the two girls, the one in red became Lorne's wife. check it out maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan
When are you guys going to interview Land of Gorch?
Don't bounce Happy Fun Ball
Has any person ever live on air gone rogue?
Yes. Damon Wayans.
Who sucks on hard candy for the entire duration of a recorded interview ??
I'm hearing the same schtick while reminiscing ? " fall in love again " ?
Not somebody so young but someone who's better writer and I don't know if you don't you don't need a performer but someone who wrote someone who might who has produced I would say Seth Meyers might be a good candidate for filling in for Lauren Michaels.
The female side you could go with Tina Fey she's written produced directed
Well if you did pick Seth Meyers you'd have to try to find a replacement for Seth on his current show and I think Liza Schlesinger would be a perfect slot in for that, she can definitely do a news bit and have her own opinion and not be afraid to express it, you know you're going to hear about her boobs at least once a month, and boobs are always funny. But I haven't really strong punch that she would know how to listen in interviews. Yeah she's she's wacky during the pandemic cooking show with her husband/boyfriend I think it's her husband I don't know, but you also know she can be serious as well she had to be. Why not bring a little bit more levity a little bit more silliness from a female perspective in a late night show but she really we really haven't had that yet, a major Network.
I think most surprising choice to take over for Lauren would be Bill hader he doesn't have a stand-up act so it's not like it's going to put a damper on his other career things that he does like films so I think maybe but maybe the job of producing SNL is quite all-consuming and it would be tough to do films but you do have that summer break
what about Chris Kattan?
I am a great fan of Alec Baldwin, but Darrell Hammond did a much better impression of Trump. SNL should have kept Darrell.
6:58. .
I wish they had asked Lorne about the perception that SNL has become explicitly politically liberal, to the detriment of its humor. Does he recognize any truth in that perception? Does he think it's important for a comedy show to strive for political balance? How do you appeal to both sides in a politically divided country, or is that important?
Yes.. I too search for each sketch and watch them as they come up in conversation.
I'm loving these interviews, but wish it could be more about the guest and the guest's experiences and just a little less about the interviewer and his perspective from his own time on the show.
Odd how Alec Baldwin was the actual person that shot and killed a woman, and mother, in a movie that he was producing.
Who's next? Soros, Schwab and the dark lord of the Siths?😅
Conan OBrien would be an amazing replacement for Lorne
I was really hoping to hear about the Shane Gillis controversy. He clearly thought highly of Shane.
I just don't get it? SNL was fearless. They didn't care who they made fun of. Now there's boundaries and fear of getting canceled. How is it alright for women to play men on the show but men playing women is off limits?
SNL isn't what it was to me. Maybe I grew out of the demographic. I used to plot my weeks towards SNL... and I will always have a nostalgic tilt towards the sketches.
Hey dudes! Make it bettererrrrr
conan.
Get Victoria Jackson on PLEASE.
She went insane. She wouldn't be a good guest.
Keenan on 30 Rock? Did he mean Tracy Morgan? Lorne is an interesting guy, but that dry mouth makes it almost impossible to listen to this interview for someone with Misophonia 😊
Never liked the Beatles music and I've tried now that I'm older and still I just can't get into it at all. Some songs I like but most are just boring to me.
Jazz and blues are about the only 2 genres I can't get into.
This nice lady I knew once burst into tears because it was her secret shame - she hated them
Sorry but SNL has sucked since K Wiig left
I've been such a big fan for decades. The anti Trump stuff got way out of control. I haven't watched since. It just stopped being funny.
It was still funny and if anything they were not hard enough on Trump.
Do you see Donald Trump as an extension of yourself?
I am really just looking for comedy. And they were more interested in politics than being funny. Not my thing.
Trump's cult simply cannot handle anyone mocking their cult daddy, it's sad
Why you can't trust what they do. It's great women are playing men. John Goodman playing a woman, verboten. Not only wouldn't we do it, it's wrong.
Total BS.
Luv ya Dana....but your are too ... Thirsty.
its so awkward to listen to David Spade try to fit in
lol this is the most projecting comment I've ever seen.
Good lord, this is boring.
Such narcissists, talking so much on their own podcast. Why won't they let silence say something?
Was not flavor it was biased
What happened in the 2016 election?
President Donald J. Trump defeated what's-her-name.
