Hi Fam! Sharing another week of renovation progress at the new home! We are ALMOST ready to move in however this week I wanted to select a stain color and work on the windows in the main living room. The countertops were also installed this week and they look unbelievable... I can't wait to see how the backsplash looks!

Drew, PLEASE use some respiratory protection when using spray paints!!! Aerosolized paint sprayed from a can does not ONLY go where you are directing it, and so it is extremely important to protect your airways-both mouth and nose!! A proper mask that will filter out the very fine paint droplets/particles that spray from the can (And will drift with the slightest breath of air-including your inhalations!) will make a huge difference❤😂 to your throat, nasal passages, and ultimately…YOUR LUNGS!!! In the least, my husband (In the paint/commercial coatings industry for 35+ years) recommends a “dust mask” which should be worn every time you do something like this!), but for someone doing a lot of this type of refinishing/painting, a respirator is the safest, most protective, choice.
Also, I think I already suggested this in another comment previously, but I will add another recommendation from my husband….in an older house with older walls, he also recommends a newer, second painters’ tape (It is YELLOW not green,) from the Shurtape line of products (Their original paper painters’ tape is green-thus called “Frog tape” and is MUCH better than other tapes!!!) is specifically used when the walls might need a little more protection (Such as with plaster walls or other older walls.) This specific tape by Suretape is YELLOW and provides a better release from the surface you are taping, leaves less residue after removing, and provides cleaner straight lines with less bleeding from your painting! Also, it is a lot more forgiving if you don’t remove the tape as soon as the paint dries (It can be safely removed days later!). Basically, it is the Cadillac of painter’s tape, and my husband feels it is well worth the extra cost!
Hope these comments help! You are so talented, and creative, I enjoy your videos so very much! Best of all, you seem like a kind and loving person, who is good to other people, grateful for any assistance given, and respectful as well! Good luck with your house, I am so happy for you and know you will end up with a truly beautiful home for yourself and all your family and friends that live with, or visit you there!

As someone with wood floors, I wish I had a lighter stain because although dark stains are beautiful, a dark wood flooring shows every piece of lint, dust or pet hair.

I agree with the suggestion to go a bit lighter on the flooring. My sister and her hubby chose a beautiful dark finish in their kitchen... and every time they moved a chair, EVEN WITH PROTECTORS on the legs, the floorboards would scratch. That was three years ago. They just replaced all the cabinets and everything, including a lighter tone on the floors, and she loves it, no more scratches!

I’ve owned many homes over the past 44 years, most of them older homes, 1940, 1925, 1913…. My advice is to go slightly lighter than darker with the stain on the wood floors; it holds up much better over time and stays in style with changing styles. Overall, you are doing a great job with everything. I absolutely love your countertops, especially the wider edging.

    • @jennyruth5620

I actually recommend the opposite. Floors get more light and that tends to make them look lighter. Not to mention no matter what you choose for the floor trends come and go. That's what always makes flooring color difficult. No one color has stayed in style overtime.

In 1952 my parents built a new house and wanted the oak floors stained darker. They looked fantastic. Those were the days of paste wax on the floors and an electric buffer. After 5 years we could see a paler trail in the heavy traffic areas. They had all the floors stripped and refinished while we were on vacation. Not as dramatic but more livable.

I think having the dark floors on your floor will match the vibe your going for. They are hard to keep up with the dust and every speck shows. Yet, you don't have animals and that will help. Just keep some touch up stain in a application bottle, you will need it.

❤Drew, you are so creative. Have you ever thought about leaving your mark on your home’s history by using some of the other shades of wood stain to create small, bespoke stencilled embellishments in the corners of the floor - or even a narrow decorative edge around the floors in each room?

I love the window color and seeing you and Macenna talking it thru is everything. I want you to wear a mask with those spray paints though your in very high heat and it makes the fumes stronger. Just be careful you are very loved and we don't want anything to happen to you. The marble is EVERYTHING. This is so exciting. I can hardly stand it. Be blessed friend

Can’t believe how good those windows have turned out Drew! Just shows what a lot of elbow grease can accomplish 😂 The lighter floor colour you’ve chosen is so pretty but the darker colours look a little ‘samey’ on camera.

(Ja-kuh -*bee*-uhn 🙂) the windows turned out so good! I have some windows I have wanted to paint but the tutorials I had come across seemed overly complicated. I will definitely try this way out and see how it turns out. I love that dark brown. Stroke of genius on your part. So much better than a stark black next to the wood trim. Windows used to be all wood framed and now yours look more cohesive. Fantastic. And that marble ….. oh my lord! That is a gorgeous marble. I love the green and red tones throughout it and the way you selected the veining makes my symmetrical loving heart so happy 😊. Really like that stain choice for the floors as well. It’s really nice that we have more options today. It used to be mission impossible to find something neutral with just a hint of either warmth or coolness, depending on what you wanted. It used to take all sorts of weird concoctions and steps to get it right lol. So exciting!

Hi Drew I love your videos. I would stain/ paint smaller room green or olive green for more depth/dimension. (it reminds me olive trees) More like a pastel sage green or olive would look great with big living rooms color scheme. Since you are thinking a dark finish for floors a green would compliment this choice it would make everything more interesting on a guests view. Sending love from Turkey.

Personally I like the lighter stains and the orangery dark because you see so much more of those beautiful grains and it is so warming /bright in color.ok so now that I see your choice of window stain the darks are a better choice but I would go with a light dark. Love the counter tops.

I was dying when you started testing on such big squares on freshly sanded floors. Never do that. Just don't. Never ever do that. It's better to buy some wood of the same type of your flooring try the different stains on that scrap wood, never do what you are doing with such big swatches on a freshly sanded floor. 1. If you don't like it you can't stain over it because it will not be the same as the rest of the floor. 2. You may not have more wood to sand again if you don't like it. Especially with old floors.

Marble is GORGEOUS 😍. The windows look fantastic. What a difference. My opinion: I think all the floors should be the lighter stain. The dark stain is really oppressive and might suck the life out of the room with the ceiling already being dark. So much fun going through this design journey with you 💛

You can always use a half stain mix of equal parts of the stain and mineral spirits. That is what we did. Perfect color. Best wishes ! The sealer also changes the color a bit so make sure to put some satin poly over for true color.
