  • It's My Turn is a self-determination training and curriculum. The need to better prepare Ohio's youth with disabilities for life beyond school generated this training initiative, As we work with students with disabilities, we find that many youths are not experiencing one of the main tenets of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA); that transition services must be based on the individual student's needs taking into account the student's preferences and interest. Transition planning need not be a burdensome process. We believe using the activities in this program, students will enhance their self-determination skills and will take a more active role in their IEP meetings and future planning. The activities and materials contained in this manual are intended to give youth with disabilities an opportunity to acknowledge and express their strengths, gifts, talents, preferences, and needs as they plan their transition from school to the community. All materials were specifically designed to be a useful resource to complete each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) once the student has reached transition age.
