    That intro was PERFECT. Also not having 2160p height has kept me from buying an ultrawide this whole time - why would I crop off the tops and bottoms of my existing displays? NOW I DON'T NEED TO. Though I kind want the normal 5K, too... heck.

      Exactly why have black bars with this when you can have real 5K 5120x2880. No one got their 1920x1080p screens and then chopped it down to 1920x810p so why would anyone screw themselves with one of these buy 2880p like a normal person and get the full screen. Instead it's just as wide but you get more screen for your money. If you watch this video on one of these ultrashort screens your 34in screen becomes 28in with black bars on either side. How stupid.

    Glad to say I now have this monitor working at highest resolution ( 5120 x 2160 ) with no problems on 2016 MacBook Pro (it just works), 2017 MacBook Pro (it just works), and 2018 MacBook Pro. With the 2018 MacBook Pro it will work if you use Display Port, if use use an adapter to connect to USB-C. It will also work DIRECTLY to ThunderBolt-3 if you start the computer up with the monitor plugged in, then restart. When the keyboard lights go out, unplug the ThunderBolt cable from the MacBook Pro. When the Apple logo appears, plug the cable back into the computer, and it will work.
    Use a a screen saver instead of putting the display to sleep. I have communicated all of this to Apple and they had me collect data from my computer while using the monitor so I anticipate a fix to make the connection work normally, probably in 10.14.2 or 10.14.3.
    The monitor is fantastic. It provides me with the wide aspect ratio I've always wanted for the extra workspace, as well as sharp, sharp text!

    I really kinda want a 21:9 form factor "TV" display. I feel like it would be so much better for a home cinema setup than constantly having black bars on the top and bottom of movies. I much prefer vertical black bars as you're still hitting 16:9 resolution rather than having to scale down.

    • @P0W3RH0U53
      @P0W3RH0U53 6 лет назад +1

      The issue you may run into would be having equipment that supports such a resolution. DVD players, xbox's, etc do not, so the only hope one would have would be some kind of software internally that takes a (hopefully 4k to properly downsample) 16 by 9 black bar picture and zoom it in. But who would even buy such a thing besides you and me?
      THAT BEING SAID, I do wish it existed :'(

    • @gaatjeniksan3068
      @gaatjeniksan3068 6 лет назад +1

      To me 21:9 only makes sense for tv's as you watch movies mainly on a TV. On a work monitor I'd prefer 16:10 and for gaming I don't really care that much as long as it's big enough.

    I bought one of these via an IT leasing program and it works at full resolution on my Dell Inspiron 7370 (Intel Core i7 8550U, Intel UHD 620 integrated, Ubuntu 22.04).
    Honestly, it's awesome for photo editing and programming. The picture-by-picture feature with 2 different split ratio options (2x 2560x2160 or 3840x2160 + 1280x2160) is great for using two inputs (i.e. private and work laptop) next to each other. Although using DP and Thunderbolt together doesn't work.

  • @WarriorsPhoto
    @WarriorsPhoto 6 лет назад +59

    21:9, has always been my favorite aspect ratio. Other then 16:10. But, I think they don’t make that many monitors anymore with that resolution.
    This is an interesting monitor find. 4k, in ultra wide. Sounds like something worth looking into.

    • @windhelmguard5295
      @windhelmguard5295 6 лет назад +9

      to me ultrawide sounds like a scam.
      it's just like how widescreen was a scam.
      you see by going forther away from the square shape you can increase the numbers which are used to tell people how big the screen is (the diagonal length) without actually increasing the surface area, allowing manufacturers to either increase teh diagonal length iwthout increasing surface area, keeping the diagonal length while reducing surface area, or to increase surface area slightly while noting a huge increase in screen diagonal.
      i also don't see the point in an ultra wide or even widescreen monitor, those aspect ratios are fine for TV's i guess, but a computer screen needs more hight because literally every website is layed out top to bottom, not left to right.
      i recently got a 16:10 monitor for this very reason because they don'T make 3:4 monitors with comparable quality anymore.

      They actually do make 2560x1600 monitors; it's the 16:10 version of 1440p. That will provide decent PPI up to about 30 inches. They're stupidly expensive though cause nobody makes them so it's cheaper to just get 4K. If you want more than 30 inches you're forced to go to 16:9 or ultrawide.

    • @Grrizz84
      @Grrizz84 6 лет назад +2

    Now let's get 2080Ti's for maximum 900$ or Euro, and it would start making sense buying so many pixels.

    • @TheRagingStorm98
      @TheRagingStorm98 6 лет назад +2

      2080ti can only just about run 4k at 60fps on new released games. I've seen tests with it hitting 70 on older titles. It's not impressive especially for price. Your 2080 won't even reach 60fps at 4k. Better off getting 1080ti and having the same performance as the new 2080 for way less.

      @@megapro125 That's a case of if and when that happens even then they would need to force it on all games in the future. It's definitely not useful right now with so few games scheduled to use it. Really you are better off by waiting for the next Gen cards which will do all you said better anyway at least nivdia tech will be more widespread then. So you will see greater performance from it.
      Honestly it's stupid to get the new cards especially if you can get a 1080ti for cheaper which runs the exact same as the 2080. Ebay is good to find ones in mint condition, gumtree aswell. But if you have reservations on that any computer company selling parts do have sales so I can see getting it at a decent price through that to.
      If you aren't gaming at 4k you are fine the 10 series cards will run fine with any game at 2k for a few years more at least. Likely will be fine running anything up until the next Gen cards are out.
      Simply put 4k 60fps gaming isn't here yet especially when only one card is capable of achieving it and that's the Ti model. Basically it will be the next generation of cards that will be able to 4k game and I'm being honest no one needs higher than that. It's been clear for a while that graphics cards have run behind resolution increases. Looking at this monitor it seems that trend will continue. I myself personally find no point in moving up to new resolutions unless I know the hardware is able to support 60fps at that resolution.
      Just my two sense really. That's how I look at the complete uselessness that is the 20 series

    Hot tip: Get the 34BK95U, the "business" model but otherwise the same. It's $200 cheaper and you can order from ProVantage. That's what I did and am happy so far. It's a heck of a monitor. I'm using it on a Dell Precision 7530 with nVidia Quadro P3200 on a Thunderbolt port. I think it is only Alpine Ridge since the DisplayPort in Thunderbolt is 1.2, but it seems to work OK -- once it works. In Linux, X messes around a while starting up but eventually (usually but not always) comes up OK. In Windows it works OK but if it goes to sleep, the computer hangs and I have to force power off. I have not tried on the laptop's standalone DisplayPort 1.4 port yet (need to get an adapter). It does not seem to charge the laptop. Just my experiences so far and some of these issues may eventually be solved. But even if not I think I'm glad I got it.
