Incredible that he could do this for less than 10K, plus labor (his). It's beautiful, and perfectly thought out.

This has brought me hope again, 99% of van conversions vans in youtube are made by experienced carpenters/engineers, wealthy people or lucky individuals that have families to help them. Thank you so much.

Oh, no, no, no, no! I have a safari which is about to undergo a "non" build camping transformation! No professional build, electric fancy, expensive work done, just simple, portable work. It will be secured but by the pressure method, easily to be taken out should I decide to buy a newer, bigger van and put the safari back to its original self to sell or trade in. That's what this man is doing, too! Fortunately, because these last several years boondocking and van/car living has just BOOMED and is vastly growing, there are now so many items to purchase for such nomad peoples that you can do it yourself! You can save money and perhaps down the road you can afford to make more elaborate changes if you want or decide you need to. Because of my midsized van I target most of these videos with this size van or smaller like the transit! The car camping videos help, too. The reason being, what styles these bigger vans, school busses etc have, I couldn't do in my van anyway. No room! Keep watching these videos and take notes, keeping in mind what size vehicle you will be living in. I Hope this helps! This is a great and perfect video to start!

I agree entirely! And this guy literally did everything the same as I did haha it's so funny. Even down to the battery he bought is exactly what I own. I spent a small handful for all of these things at first but after it's all in, you save immensely!

We have an older van too! I built the bed in the back with scrap wood. And converted an old cabinet into a kitchen. We did purchase a toilet and we do find ourselves in places where we need it. I made an interior shower with a foldable swimming pool and a pump sprayer that i found on a hunters website just for taking showers away from home. We loooooove our little cozy home. There is always new little gadgets and solar stuff to add. Oh yes! We have a jackery which covers all our power needs so far. It recharges while driving, which is nice. We have only lived in it when we go on long vacations, but these have been our most memorable vacations. We take four small dogs and a cat. It all started with out wedding anniversary, all i wanted was to eat a pizza on the beach in a van with the doors open. It has led us through so many places, and to fish right out of your bed is awesome when you can back right ip to the water. Now we just start the van and the dogs start crying to get in. I wish I had discovered a van much earlier in my life. Its amazing to have coziness and just walk up to the cab and drive to another location without getting out of pjs. Or sleep on a cliff overlooking the ocean. I could go on and on. We love our van. 😊❤

Years ago, I bought a 1998 GMC factory built Conversion Van, new from Dealer. MPG 19 MPG City-Hwy. Road trips, 20 to 21 MPG. Vortec-350, EFI. Transmission came with Overdrive which helped attain good MPG. I drove it conservative, no quick starts or stops, and HWY, generally Speed Limit + 4-5 mph over. Manually tested Gallons used per miles and got consistent results. Pay loaded - 4 kids, wife and camping gear. Overall, very impressed with my Van Model. One issue to factor in-the conversion was built on 1500 frame. With the added weight of the hightop and interior, it went through Brakes often - 30k to 40k miles. It's best to buy a conversion built on 2500 or larger frame to support the weight, or convert the brake and suspension to 2500, which the brake experts recommended. Great Van overall.

Just purchased a 1995 Ford Camper van 150 and this conversion is exactly what I needed. I want to keep my costs low. The flooring is genius. I was dreading pulling up the old carpet. While it definitely needs a thorough cleaning, just covering it makes perfect sense. The fan system is so cool. Going to check out the charging system, as well.

Vanners are often concerned about total vehicle weight. I have this same van basically and that back seat was super heavy when taking it out. Then you add plywood and thick mattress on top - just wondering about the affect of that added weight in the back on handling and efficiency. I'm a newbie still working on my no build layout. I replaced the back seat with a light but sturdy metal frame and 3" mattress which weighs much less than the original seat giving me the allowance to carry more cargo. I guess it evens out. I love the Chevy Express high top so far on short trips. Wanna get her out there on the road soon. Thanks for sharing yours. That back netting is great.

    • @WhereRVGoing
      @WhereRVGoing 3 года назад +1

Thank you for your comment, i love our Chevy too... I'm pretty sure removing the back bench would lighten tye total weight and allow to carry more cargo instead, but on our case we dont live in it or go on very long trips, so we really dont carry any more than we already regularly do, and the handling is very good... stable and sturdy

that is similar to how my 1998 ford e150 is, i don't like to cook or clean so my looks more like a master bed and bath, with just a queen memory foam bed and a porta potty with a 3 basket rolling unit to hold personal hygiene items and a solar shower. I do have a 500 W jackery box but besides that the inside is very minimalistic. In the back i carry a folding chair, table, and portable Coleman grill (which I've never used) and tool box. thats it. Very nice - he makes a nice conversion by an amateur look possible. Yup, once again, watching an NJOA video is motivating - thanks!
I do wish there were a list of the brands/names/models of the items he "just got from" somewhere. After all, knowing specifics avoids the "close but not quite" syndrome.

Fantastic example of a minimal build out van using existing structure and equipment. Most build-outs would have you believe you need a high-end Sprinter or Transit and start from scratch and spend months and hours and hours of Labor and money

This is exactly what I did. First I spent a few months building a Toyota Hiace in NZ and it was hard work and expensive. Then I flew to the US to do the same and I bought a Chevy Express 99 with a luxury conversion and just myself with basic tools I built a really sweet campervan in 12 days flat. The most difficult and time-consuming aspect for me was removing the seats and that damn seat plate and the carpet. I bought 3 pieces of furniture and modified certain pieces to make them fit. I kept the rear seat and used that as a lounge and bed by putting a nice quality memory foam mattress on it. Very comfy! I traveled around the US in it for 4 months and then moved to Mexico and listed it on FB and it sold within a day. I do miss it a lot and I wnat to do it again but the MILAGE on those vans is SHOCKING!

This is my type of guy he's DIY.... DIY hell yeah.😃 I love people that think out the box.. rather than depend on people to do it for them and pay top dollar for it.. but that's just me the DIY King ...

I have that same camp shower. I love it. Plenty of pressure even to wash my long thick hair with just a gallon of water.

@@WhereRVGoing It really is. I wasn't sure it would be capable of handling my hair but it makes short work of it. I'm very happy with it. Beats pouring cups of water over my head. Lol.

In Canada it’s hard to find a decent camper van or conversion van in decent shape without extreme high mileage. And if you do find one with lower mileage the price is ridiculous. Then you mist check it out and see what kind of shape it is because many people are not clean and the vehicle will show that. High mileage vehicles bring other mechanical issues. Nobody wants to replace a motor or a transmission. If you can pay cash for one of these, thenit won’t matter about the gas mileage because you don’t have a vehicle payment. Great video!

You did a great job! I love the fact that the van can be returned to its original condition if you want to sell it to upgrade, etc. You gave me a ton of great ideas, I am busy looking for a conversion van at the moment. This is a wonderful weekend rig which is exactly what I want.

Well it's been awhile since I watched this video and had asked some questions. I guess you don't read what people say for ask. I did figure out how and what to use as an awning for my van and how to attach it. I still have to go all the way across the top so that rain won't come in on the side that I want it used for. Anyway I'm enjoying my van alot. Blessings, teri
