Hello Mr. Hayes , I've just discovered your channel , and believe me it's a real relief to see that you still make bows the old way. I love traditional archery and I'm a fellow bowyer myself. I just wanted to say how much I appreciate your videos. Your style reminds me of Ed Scott , he's the man who got me interested in making traditional bows. I followed his every move in his style , it's a shame that he isn't with us anymore , he was a great inspiration. Anyway keep up the great work and videos.
Great job guys!! Those bows look awesome! Loving all of your bow vids Clay! I’m a lifelong hunter and used to shoot my bow a lot in my younger years...but fell out of it and am just getting back into it. But now you got me motivated to build my own...thanks! Btw...also really enjoyed your self bow elk hunts too! Joe
Actually it's all about practice practice practice. There are endless amounts of detailed instructions on how to build bows from the very basic to the most complicated ones for free online. Just start with the basics. You'll get the feeling of it and advance naturally! 💪
Nearly had my first build at full draw, even snagged some antlers from a client made some beauuuutiful tip overlays, before I could finish it my friend tried to show it off one friday in my absence...pulled it to full draw and broke it.
Just curious to know why a heat gun works better than some sort of steam tube (containing the wood to be reshaped) to reshape the bow? Is it bad to introduce moisture?
i would love to spend time with you building a snake bow mad of osage orange tried to grow some in the UK but after planting the seeds they just seem to vanish done it about 20 times now without success
For the heavy grinding and shaping. Then you can get finer to smooth it off. The handles are usually covered with rawhide or leather so there’s no need to go crazy with the sanding.
I'm confused about the classes because you said that for people that are getting into making their first bow, they shouldn't mess with Hedge Apple until you have experience with making self bows. So what exactly is bow building class about?
I’ve never said that a beginner should steer clear of Osage. I have said that you shouldn’t spend a lot of money on a stave until you get some experience under your belt. Throughout these classes I’m guiding the students through the process step by step so they learn to do it right the first time.
@@clayhayeshunter Oh ok. Now I get it. Thanks for clarifying that for me. I appreciate it. It's because I started reading your book and I was confused about where you talk about Osage Orange. I humbly apologize if I meant any offense.
Hey clay you should do an online type class. That way people like me in arizona can learn some of your knowledge. Im a beginner bow maker online class wpuld be awsome
@@clayhayeshunter i have seen them and all your yputibe vids. I just think a live online class would be great. It would be more personable. But believe me man i wouldn't be where i am at today making bows if it wasnt for your videos. Much appreciated

You'll be cool for the zombie apocalypse. With all these bows and weapons you got, You don't need to worry about losing your weapon you can just make a new one that's damn cool.
Im sure I had done loads of stuff wrong and it would have broken sooner rather than later but damn...Let a man test fire his own homemade primitive lethal weapons.
Hey, in this video ruclips.net/video/Mg8SFBwOn7I/видео.html you were talking about about training helping with target panic/controling your shoot. How often, how long and in which condition i should do it?
I can totally vouch for how awesome the class is. I came in with zero knowledge and walked out with a bow I’m very proud of - Go for it!
Those bows where amazing. The amazing craftsmanship and traditional ways from clay is inspiring

Osage like a clay based soil. They don’t grow well in sandy or highly organic soils.
Счастливые люди !
What grit sandpaper do you use the sand the fiberglass sleeves on your bows?
I use 80 grit on the sander.
@@clayhayeshunter do you only use 80 grit?

Cool, thanks. I might look into doing a live QA centered around bow building. That might be a step towards a live class of sorts.
