My bow built with Clay is waiting in anticipation for tomorrow mornings opening day of Indiana bow season. An experience i will never forget. Very few masters of there craft left in this world. Clay is one and a good dude to boot.
The process of building your own string really only takes about the determination of a day and some fairly cheap supplies. The reward for me is not having to depend on someone else to build a flemish twist which I probably couldn't find in my area anyway. Also, a spare doesn't take up much weight in a pack.
I built church furniture for years and was voted #1 in California and 8th in the nation by woodworking magazine. I have never built a bow but I'm definitely going to. I've watched all your bow building videos and I gotta say you are the best at teaching this skill you have. watching you explain this to these guys is absolutely awesome. what's really cool is I understand everything you are saying about the wood. This is just cool man. keep on keeping on man.
Woooo hoooo. It was after some of Clays older how to Osage Videos I went out and purchased my first adult archery setup. Clay would have been a good teacher in a different life :)
Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. I've made several now based on your instruction. Turned out perfect. When I first spotted you on Alone, told the wife "there's the winner!", lol.
makes my heart happy to see bows like that one day ill be able to make a osage bow, until then ill keep doing board bows. thank for the vid the bows turned out awesome!
I'd like to someday find a piece of Osage. Until then here in the Catskills, Hickory, Birch and White Oak.... By the way, somebody had written your tuning video was awesome; it was good, very clear and essentially fabulous explanations with clear demonstrations.
This is cool, I have wanted to make a bow since I was a kid. Not sure what I want to make but something You mentioned was Eastern Red Cedar makes for a good bow and that is very Abundant in South Dakota. I knew I saw somewhere in a South Dakota Museum or some historical thing it showed that the Native Lakota and Nakota used a Cedar bow.
We got several Osage orange trees in our backyard. Pretty soon we’re cutting them down and selling the wood to a couple of different people who want to make a bow out of them. Got about 6 of them that are fully grown and a couple not fully grown
Mighty fine Clay...MIGHTY FINE. Got a nice buck waiting for you. With your name on it. Any time. Proud of you. Humble...yet direct. The passion from the tree...to it's final fling. Life is good. I like your style brother. Always have. Many thanks for sharing the family life, too. He continues to bless you...yet tests you. I admire the fact...like your bow...how you grip it. You may miss sometimes...correct it...make it better. Then to share his given talents...has...will...made the man you are. There are legends in mind...or legends in time. Prefer the later...Brother
HI, Mr. Clay. Firstly, thank you so much for all of your videos! I really enjoy bow making videos, and your hunting videos are pretty cool too. I saved up money for wood and tools mowing my Grandpa's lawn, and I've tried to build three board bows with success only once. I managed to make a dog-bone backed Red Oak board bow, 43# at 29 inches. Anyway, I've always wanted to make a bow out of an actual bow stave, but I've never had the opportunity. What are the legalities behind just cutting down trees, and where could I find some osage or other good bow making woods? I'm located near Central Florida. Thank you so much! Have a nice day.
Small world.. we moved to Navarre 2 years ago and ive just recently started getting into the woods and gone down your channels rabbit hole. I thought you were doing most your classes in ID, how often are you doing them here? I’d love to get with you and build one rather than buy from someone else. Know right where y’all’s place is here after seeing the sign, that’s wild haha
at 30:35 what kind of blade is on that saw? is it just a hacksaw with a special blade? why do they say tile saw... but is nocks look real good I just start off with a file but sometimes they go a little off
@@clayhayeshunter thank you, not sure how I got so confused. When I typed tile saw into google images all it had was like table saws with diamond blades... I got it straight now though. Tile saw blade on a hacksaw... Also I think your hacksaw threw me off a little too cause I never seen a hacksaw like that.
Clay, I imagine this question may have already been answered. But there are far too many comments to read through to find your reply that might answer my question also. What I’m wondering is, what brand of bow scale would you recommend? Something I might pick up on Amazon. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and thank you for these fine videos, they’re always very informative and pleasurable.😊🍃🍂
Awesome video! I have a few staves that have been sitting for 15 years, 'bought time I did something with them. Did you make those bow horses ? Any plans on the horses? THanks. JD
When you are chasing a ring is there anything you look for that makes one ring more desirable than another? I am looking at the end grain of my stave and see that the third ring has a wider gap, my thought is that ring may be more forgiving.
i would love to come build a bow with u i already built a few bows already . like to learn more .so u give a stave to use and help make a bow i get to keep ? how much is it for a class .
I'm a new sub and I must say I really enjoy your channel. Binged on it for hours yesterday and noticed that I never saw you oil a single bow. Any particular reason or did that just come later off camera? Wish I had known what I learned about hickory form you videos. Then it wouldn't have taken me two years to screw up first bow! One other thing, I've got an Osage stave fifty eight inches. Is it good for anything?
By oil a bow I assume you mean doing thr finishing work and sealing. I did one vid a while back showing that. The 58” stave- you can make a bow from that as well.
@@robertdaugherty2831 Shouldn't be complicated the metal would make if very strong. work up a wooden version that fits you then go to metal if you need. My wooden ones are simple and last well.
Hey Clay, I'm seventy-one but in very good shape. I walk miles and miles yearly knowing that staying healthy is my job. Would you allow me to take a bow building class? I can travel almost at will. How do I get started?
I have an ironwood 40 yards from my tree stand. I want to make a bow out of it and shoot a deer from that stand. I can’t wait for this video to help me out
I built my first bow today and it snapped ☹️ Everything was wrong from the beginning, I did not have access to any bow wood like yew, osage, hickory but I used a local hardwood. First mistake was, I selected a stave with a lot of knots, second mistake was, the backset was too much and i also fire dried it, it became pretty powerful after fire drying but it snapped right from one of the knots

This is one of the best bow builders I have ever seen.

I was ready for opening day here in Indiana then I broke my bow string! Now Saturday I have to go to the bow shop and start over

@@darktimber3340 A spare is a must. It's also a good idea to alternate using them so that both stretch and wear the same amount.
Good luck 👍

Loved this Clay, Clinton from Sydney Australia.
Great video brother. Great step by step vid I can recommend to others for a reference. Keep that knowledge alive
Great vid Clay! Been making bows since I was 17 and I still learned some things. You are a great teacher!
Thanks 🙏
I got the hard news you were not doing bow making classes for at least a year. When you open them back up to the public I’m signing up!
👍
Is there somewhere to sign up for that list?
Man that was gonna be my next question lol. I was looking to take a class ASAP 😔
Pretty amazing to watch a master in his element. I’ll definitely be signing up for the next Idaho bow class. Keep up the great work Clay.
Thanks David
That would be so fun to take your class someday. I love woodworking and carving. I've made three pair of Spruce oars and I used a similar technique.

I've never seen metal shavehorses before. We don't have Osage Orange here, but our Ironwood might work. But it's kinda rare.

i notice the newer videos your liking that heat gun over steam, is that for quickness so you dont have to watch paint dry?
Yep, it’s much quicker. And Osage does well with dry heat.
You have a video on that BOW BENCH?
no but you can see something similar at stavemaster.com

What bench are you using to hold that wood down?

Is there any sort of finishing process for these bows? Stain, finish/oil of some sort, wax etc?

Where do you find Osage staves
It’s rare that I’ll watch a video that’s over 10 min, but I loved this whole thing!
What camera was used to shoot this?
Do you do any bow building classes in the south?
Not at this time
I live in central Florida. I’ve never seen osage! What do I look for?
A lot of it grows in central Alabama in the black prairie region.
What kind of wood is used?
Where do you offer bow building classes?
What diameter Bamboo is required for masking bows
What I would do for this experience ... wow
Can hedge wood be steamed, bent into a recurve, and it hold the shape?
Yep
Is the follow-up videos uploaded yet ?
Yep
Very impressive for sure
