When a new adventure book for Dungeons & Dragons is released, the first thing many Dungeon Masters ask is "How Do I Run This?" Well I'm going to do my part to help D&D tables, by breaking down the first level adventure "Mazfroth's Mighty Digressions" from Candlekeep Mysteries.

Huge thank you to Taking20 and Web DM for helping me to grow as a Dungeon Master and content creator. And of course a huge shout out to Nerd Immersion and Dungeon Dudes for helping grow the community.

I think Joy of Extradimensional Spaces' straightforwardness is a good thing, not every adventure needs to be a turbo sandbox with endless possibilites imo. And having a simple, quite linear adventure is amazing for new players. Also good video btw, I've been looking to run this module with my friends.
Awesome video. Thank you for the different perspective on this. I'm running Candlekeep Mysteries as a campaign for my friends and you've given me some more things to think about. I was looking at this level 2 adventure as 'weaker' than the level 1 one, but now I'm liking it more and can't wait to see how this fleshes out the world more for them.
This sounds like a great adventure for more experienced RPG players who want more of a RP aspect to their games.
Great video from someone who isn't one of the bigger D&D channels. You really keep up with their quality and it's in an easily watchable engaging format. Thanks a lot for the advice!
In the middle of running this and I agree with you that it's really well done and the Amberdunes are great. But I have trouble with the idea that Korvala didn't expect the Gingwatzims to kill people. It makes more sense that she maybe sent them out into the world with instructions to stay in book form as long as they can, knowing that they'll get hungry eventually and not really caring what would happen. Otherwise, it's hard to explain how they ended up all the way in Candlekeep and then attacked instead of turning into a rat or a spider and slipping away. Maybe she made sure to sell to out of towners so that whatever happened would happen far away. I think she's still sympathetic in this case, but also still Neutral Evil. Another note I added, if she finds out that her Gingwatzims caused trouble in Candlekeep, she will be genuinely upset. Nidalia would never have wanted to disrespect the greatest library in Faerun. Nidalia loved books and would have loved Candlekeep. I might even have Korvala look down and say something like, "I'm so sorry Nidalia."
I know this is years late, but I'm just running this. I did sow some seeds of doubt about the nature of were-creatures from the outset by allowing the PCs to read part of the book *before* it transformed, so they have Mazfroth's factoid that not all these creatures are evil (and dropped in the difference between therianthropes (were-xyz) and antherions (xyz-were) for my lore-goblin). All this is post BG3 so they've also been having fun exploring the city (the Baldur's Gate Gazeteer and Descent into Avernus have both been helpful), staying in the Elfsong Tavern, and taking in a show at at the Oasis Theatre (Little Calimshan helped establish that theres multiple cultures here). Having located the hideout now they really aren't sure what to make of the booksellers: are they just an ethnic group or not-entirely-human... ?
I think I might be using this as a one-shot for my first ever time DMing, so thanks for all the advice!
For this particular adventure, I'm going to present the opening scenes of Descent into Avernus so that my party has a choice to assist the Flaming Fist or track down the culprits of the book spirits - or both!
I'm also drawing heavily on Descent into Avernus and found the Baldur's Gate Gazetteer really helpufl. My PCs have another job they're doing in Baldur's Gate, so I'm repurposing the Elfsong episode for that.
Love the energy! Great analysis of this adventure. Thank you for the great advice!
Not me using this video to plan my session last minute 😅
Your synopsis, suggestions, and presentation are all outstanding! I hope you cover all of Candlekeep Mysteries. I have some questions that I'd love clarification on since my players will be starting this adventure soon. How do the PCs know the Amberdune clan are jackalweres in humanoid form? That is, what physical characteristics distinguish them from other shape-shifted humanoids? Do they have pointed teeth like the depiction of Korvala? It seems like this adventure could play out without the PCs ever knowing Korvala and her tribe are jackalweres at all. There doesn't seem to be any narrative reason for the Amberdunes to ever enter their hybrid forms since they're clearly trying to hide in plain sight in the Wide.
Enjoy the Format .. and now thinking what to run for a 2 person newbie group .. I think I will go for candlekeep instead of lost mines .. because it is more diverse in hte challanges .. and love the videos. Because other "how to run" yt videos are often "ditch the adventure and lets do this .. and this .. and this .." wich why bothering with the adventure in the first places. Enjoy that you are more giving general tipps and tweeks.
Do the PCs know the jackalweres are jackalweres right away, at the shop?
How is everyone introducing the initial book encounter to their parties? Specifically groups who are running this as a one-shot without much of a previous backstory.
By having the PCs do busy work. Assigned by the Avowed to shelve new books arriving in Candlekeep. My PCs are all adjutants
Would a Gingwatzim be seen by detect magic when in it's object form?
Just wanted to point out a mistake in the description: it's a 2nd level adventure.
