- Building an engine is always a compromise of money vs quality. Dont go down the path of cheap is great as you will regret it in the end. Having an engine on a bench is already a days job; dont cut corners on quality parts and proper machine job.
A properly rebuilt engine has the potential to last as long as a factory fresh one, done right of course!
nice to see a shiny 300 tdi like that. If you take good care of those engines they last you forever. Mine is at 600.000km or 370.000 miles still driving it daily (all original, nothing overhauled)
yep great little engines. They only fail due to poor maintenance. I popped one head with 500 k and no wear on the cilinder walls vizible. They were glazed of course but nothing major wrong with it
Thanks for the walkaround; great job, engine probably better than new.
FOR a DIY rebuild on a known engine, you may overhaul the critical engine internals, etc., and on a budget reuse any serviceable components, and later replace ancillaries such as fuel pumps, starter motors, water pumps, Turbo, alternators, tensioners, etc if and when they fail.
Rebuilding engines for customers is a completely different matter, and components in unknown conditions can and do result in failure, potentially resulting in engine damage and consequently reputational damage so extra precautions are required to minimise the potential for failure and unhappy customers.
That is an amazing job. Thank you for your time!
I very much like the good work you have done on this engine. 👍
Thanks very much , very informative and well pointed out . Like we all say you get what you pay for cheers and and keep the reviews coming 👍👍👍🇳🇿🇳🇿🍺🍺
thank for watching! always appreciate feedback
What a beauty. So shiny.
Not hard to see why they can cost so much. Though I'm sure if one was to divide the potential 300k reliable and hassle free Kms by the cost it would work out to good value.
Glad to see you! Thank you so much
It’s worth watching this amazing videos on your channel.straight forward videos ,all I learnt from you was quality all the way 🔥🔥💯
thank you very much for your kind words.
How do I contact you , number or are you on Instagram
Brillant Job!!!
That is a thing of beauty.
mines on 410.000 miles , never had the head off, oil every 5000 miles , and they"re good,
Very descent job & very informative. Do you rebuild to sell & if yes how much for the rebuilt engine?
Nicely done
The biggest problem is ensuring quality parts as said, some well-known brands are no longer producers of guaranteed quality parts.
Land Rovers cost money to do properly even without the meticulous care and attention to detail that Heritage Steel apply.
back in the days you knew when you spent the extra cash you'd get quality parts. These days i really dont know anymore. Even what used to be good is a mess. Land Rover is NOT like Mercedes. When available i go for original Merc parts on critical things. Still today lots of parts still available.Try to get original Land Rover parts for a 10 year old car....To my mind its done on purpose. Top down orders from Govts around the world to stop manufacturers producing parts to make the (irrational) shift to EV's quicker.
How do the TD5 motors compare. I'm thinking of swapping my TD5 for a TDI200 that I already have. How do I keep the traction control?
I agree with you on this
Td5 is better
Nice build. Do you plate your parts in zinc yourself or do you have someone else do it? Also, have you ever put a BMW M57 in a defender? Thanks for the great videos
i have the zinc plating done professionally. Finally i found a place who does it right and i think in a year or so they will be out of business....Problem with engine upgrades, especially those with huge BHP outputs will break almost everything on a stock Defender. Even if you upgrade to Ashcroft everything over 200bhp you just rip everything apart
beautiful work I like that
nice engine build working on mine this weekend will get it running I hope. I used the good parts not the shitparts
wise choice. hope it runs well
Great video!
Very good video. Would love to see a list of quality parts providers you mentioned.
hi, just don't go with the blue box shit or similar.Pistons from MAHLE/Kolbenschmidt, Bearings from GLYCO, Gasket SETS from ELRING etc...
The machine job is of vital importance as well...just as important as good quality parts
I knew it! the flywheel is too heavy. can you do a video on that topic? like the difference shown by revving or stomething
Its not too heavy its designed for longevity and momentum. When you change things its always a trade off. You wont notice a huge upgrade in performance but the engine does become livelier...combined with tweaking the fuel pump a bit and increased boost pressure you get a quite quick 300 tdi without sacrificing reliablity
@@heritagesteel1976 I get it. probably its gonna stall earlier or something? Its just that i always thought it feels a bit tired when you play with the throttle and doesnt rev as fast as it could. Our vw 1.6 td is way more responsive in revs. probably because its way smaller abd less heavy but im glad that you pointed the flywheel out. thanks for the trick. so would you say that the flywheel impacts the driving? even when clutch is engaged?
Brilliant build ,,,
I have a 1995 300 TDi fully restored with 53,000 on the clock
Wouldn't you mind checking, If I correctly got the Brand of the waterpump . Aerotex?
BTW, beautiful work! Did you use the crankshaft seal made by Turner engineering? The one that has place for 2 little screws, that will screw into the block.
Thank you for your compliment! Those are the only ones I use from Turner engineering. Expensive but solves the leaking for good. Another shitty leak problem are those t seals on the last crank bearing holder. I literally glue them in and use extra sealant to get an engine leak tight. Don't like using it but from experience its the only way to get a leak free 300/200
Very professional job !! Have you already done full restauration : engine (200/300) + gear box + transfer box ? how many time is necessary ? thx :)
hi,
yes i do it all the time. There are two videos on my channel regarding the LT230 transfer box and the R30 gearbox. Honestly, it takes forever:) Jokes aside, a very long time, cannot say how many hours, The transfer box is pretty "easy" but the gearbox is not. Same thing with the engine:either use good quality parts(expensive) or dont do it all.
All the 300 TDI gearboxes i see these days are very worn, so a lot of parts needed. All in all i would say a two days job for the gearbox, and one day for the transfer box.
@@heritagesteel1976thx for your answer. Can you give me your professional mail to contact you ?
It looks beautiful, I'm inspired to do this for my 300tdi automatic defender I'm re building. Any tips or advice?
just go for it:) The joy of having an engine built by yourself is priceless
Also, how much did you machine off of the flywheel?
👏
What about a twin inlet manifault and a turbo with t28 shaft... What is your opinion
no opinion:) i rarely do upgrades. i The one i did turned ou nicely with the pump wide open, bigger IC and a "hybrid" turbo. But not really my thing
@@heritagesteel1976 I think the main purpose of the twin inlet manifold is to protect the engine from wear as most of the air is pushed into piston no3 so they do more work than they should.
congratulations for the video, can I ask you how much you lightened the flywheel? Thank you
Thank you! this is something i leave up to the Machine shop, i dont have a concrete figure to give you. i can ask them- if i remember- the next time i'm there.
@@heritagesteel1976 thank you very kindly, if you can ask it would be of great help to me, because here in Italy they are not that expert on this engine
sería bueno saber cuanto peso quitan al volante MOTOR. un saludo desde España
Beautiful work. Do you have a website?
not yet. soon I hope
Exceptional workmanship. thank you.
thank you!
Question: How many millimetres did you machine off the face of the flywheel?
I don't know that I leave to the machine shop to decide.

I avoid shitpart at all costs (we know who that is)
wtf were you buying your parts from far too expensive ,i have a couple of 300 tdi engines in my defenders they are getting removed and i am puting m57 engines and boxes the 300 tdi just dont do the job for me anymore need more power to tow heavy loads 220 bhp bmw engines will do the job out of x5's plus i need auto boxes as my left knee aint the best and clutche is heavy duty on one of them other is an auto.
You can rebuild a 300 TDI cheaply with Britpart stuff...you get what you pay for. Then you can try turner engineering website for parts and you will feel the difference. I've used every imaginable part from good to bad, i dont use crap stuff in engine rebuilds. Its just not worthit. Even good brand names these days its a hit and miss...But that is just my experience
i get ya and i know what your saying ive had a rite headache trying to find a thermostat that actually opens when it should were do you get yours from ive tried 2 genuine ones all open when its too hot i took an old one out of an engine and it works perfect no overheating soon as i use any other genuine too it overheats doing my head in all seem to come from britpart even genuine @@heritagesteel1976
its a shame these days the quality of aftermarlket parts even the good ones
The low quality of spares doesn’t help Land Rover’s reputation of poor reliability , 🇬🇧
that's the MAIN reason Land Rover+s are notorious for leaks. They didn't leak when new, so only after the 3rd or 10th owner, who has thrown every imaginable cheap gasket, seal etc at the engine etc then you get a leaky Land Rover. My own discovery is LEAK FREE. no one believes it of course until I show them the parking spot
Just purchased one so very helpful video thanks Zahra and Paul @twoheadnorth
