Cheers Tony, the little amp was a lot of fun to build but more fun to play, yeah and high gain all the way, unless everyones asleep then dialing the volume down works a treat!
I just powered my ruby with a bit over 5 volts and that makes it sound better than at 9 volts. and it only takes 0,2 watts considering today's energy price thats a win. ;+)
...and I see now that this is shown at the beginning of the video. Vintage Rolas are popular among guitar amp enthusiasts and a great choice for guitar amps due to their limited treble response; they sound similar to modern purpose-made guitar speakers. Nice demonstration of what can be done with a simple by-the-specsheet amp and the right speaker! For the record, the LM386 isn't my favorite amp chip, but it's hard to find a better guitar amp in a DIP package. It sounds even better if you add a "loudness" treble cut (shown in the datasheet) in place of the gain control. ;)
Peter Sage Thanks Peter, the speaker was a fluke, I tried a couple of different speakers lying around then discovered this one it sounded good so in it went and will stay, if I decide to make another amp I'll have to hunt for something similar and maybe try out your loudness switch recommendation. Cheers!!
Great tone!!! And looks really cool too!!
Man.. I need that JFET! It's the clean tone that's the win in this little amp ! Really nice playing too...anyway round the JFET?
Just gotta keep playin with that high gain! That amp with a Gibson 335 would be amazing!

Awesome!
No reverb Edwardo, just recorded on the ipad as is with no effects.
Thanks
What speaker? Speaker is critical to tone.
Peter Sage the speaker is a Plessey/Rola 8 inch from an early 70's stereo speaker cabinet.

Could you please link a diagram ?
Hi Noah, the link Ruby - Runoffgroove The instructions with the Ruby amp kit are also very clear.
works with 9v?
Aldo Orozco yeah 9v battery or an adapter, if I run the adapter at 12v it gets louder and distorts a bit more.
