This video covers some "negative" social experiences in China, e.g., smoking in public and the "Great Fire Wall". I see in the comments that many Chinese viewers got triggered by such depictions. As a Chinese myself, I totally understand their feelings but must say they are still in the middle of getting through their shares of "culture shock" in a world of free speech. The point is, the depiction here, even about the negative experiences, is rather friendly than critic. The tone of their performance is like "i am missing all these 'freedoms' I enjoyed in China" rather than morally accusing or hostilely mocking at them. I guess it will take some more time for them to understand.

I just got back from a year living in Taiwan and this is so relatable hahaha right when I came back to the US I used to always forget my seatbelt, look both ways before crossing the street, and the worst thing was that for some reason I had an accent when speaking English... most of my reverse culture shock has gone away by now, but I think one lasting thing was the fact that no matter where I am or how close I'm standing to someone, I'll always speak REALLY REALLY LOUDLY. Even though I had to lose these habits in order to fit back in, I'll have to say I miss being able to haggle!!
the problem is that in some chinese cabs or I guess in this case maybe taiwanese cabs, they put seat covers that has either Velcro or some sort of binding that completely hides away the buckling part of the seat belt so you legit cannot buckle your seatbelt unless you take the seat cover off or cut a hole.
Haha funny! Interesting about the accent. I tend to notice accent coming from westerners who have lived in China (or Taiwan) for a long time. But what I notice is that it's not "accent" in the sense of the pronunciation of words, but with tones. Mandarin has 4 tones plus a soft tone whereas English has no set tones. So if you've been speaking Mandarin a lot these 4 tones will likely come through when you speak English because they've been wired into your brain. I'm Chinese originally but lived majority of my life in the UK (including all my teenage years, with only 3 visits to China in the last 13 years). When I speak Chinese nowadays I don't do the 4 tones properly with each word, and in a sentence my tone would go up and down like it does in English. My family in China all say I don't speak Chinese very well anymore, but it is in fact better than it sounds.

Western always talk about "Human rights", but it's all depends on how you define it. In many perspects, China has more human rights and less rules compared to western countries.
In some very small and traditional cities men may do that, but still very rare those days. It’s not a very decent gesture as perceived nowadays anyway...it’s a typical Asian squatting though, since I’ve seen many in movies presenting old society of China
Or South Korea, I've been in America for a week and I was so confused about the trash. I'm ashamed to say that I just left the trash next to the trash bin.
Very funny. But you forgot about "嗯“。 Last time i was back in the states (only for a week or so), i couldn't stop just 嗯ing people as an affirmative response. It's just reflexive. I know the squatting while trying to haggle was meant to be over the top, but... damn that was a little much.
When I got back to America I was staring at everyone because they looked so different. And it was so weird understanding what people were talking about... it's incredibly shocking after a long time in China
I'm Chinese moved into the u.s when I was 6. Culture shock is nothing new to me, I joined the U.S military after I graduated high school, been to Germany, Canada and Kuwait. After I did my time, I went back to China for 2 weeks as vacation, experiencing reverse culture shock is nothing because I got used to it
There are many garbage bins on the streets of China. At present, China's garbage does not need to be sorted and discarded, so we can easily throw the garbage into the trash can on the street. The Chinese drink alcohol at the dinner table, and only the alcoholic will carry the bottles around. In addition, in China, only informal street stalls will be bargained, and we will pay the price in the market where the price is clearly marked. When we talk to others, we stand or sit, not squat
Coming back from living in Korea it was strange for everyone to order their own meals and eat it individually- also tipping. I also missed being able to just go and pay up front when I was done instead of waiting an eternity for the check to pay.
I did not have much reverse culture shock. I enjoyed the set prices (and not the ¨special¨ increased ¨friend¨prices), the vibrant colors and non polluted skies. I mean, when you did find set prices (electronics especially) or food, they were cheaper, so I missed that, the usa is just too expensive. But overall, it was not too hard to adapt. I did not miss random people taking photos of me for no reason.
Here in the US I was once being taught to IGNORE garbage classification and MAKE MY LIFE EASIER by putting it in the most convenient ones. And the uber drivers park illegally here too, like right behind a stop sign. Pretty sure it's a no stopping zone.
Yep. Been there done that..glad to be back in Arkansas, USA. Although the "expat bubble" was very comfy, my conscience couldn't handle the fact of hundreds of thousands of Chinese are persecuted, imprisoned in concentration camps, and many killed and their organs harvested for profit. I finally woke up.
I don't get the point... You drank beers on taxis or in parks when you were in China? And gave some cigarettes and green tea to policemen as bribe? If that's true, I must say you were toleranted as "some other foreigners who lost their mind" , it does not mean it's ok.
Sure it doesn't, but this is sketch comedy that's reflecting on the behaviors of Foreigners in China and what they have interpreted from interacting with some locals.

I'm so afraid to go back home 😂😂😂
LMAO on fighting the bill and friend's price at the end
Hmm... Wondering if that will happen to me after I get back to Asia...lol
Probably
I had the same experience, when I come back home from holland to Taiwan,I had the reverse culture shock too 😂😂 but now it’s better
reverse after reverse after reverse, you will probably feel home tho.. no worries.. I still consider China home more than my own home country
You should do a sequel adding lack of personal space, mass chaos at any place where a line should be forming, walking right up to the server to pay for your meal, and some others.
The my town my treat is so real! Hahaha
I needed to get used to the traffic laws again hahahahahaha
5:02 Asian Squat , so fucked , so good :D
Zhen Lin CHN
I spit out my water
i dont know about you guys but i found this very funny.... lmao
This is so interesting , You guys like professional actors , Really funny .
after travelling around the world for 3 years, back home, one of the habits i couldn't kick was doing my laundry in the bathtub. kept it up for 3 months
Western always talk about "Human rights", but it's all depends on how you define it. In many perspects, China has more human rights and less rules compared to western countries.
you are conflating rights with liberties
Fuck I perfectly know that. Went to a supermarket on Sunday evening in Germany and was totally confused that they are not open 24/7 😂
4:24 suddenly a random Francis
"waiter--" very accurate
This was awesome guys. I was haggling everywhere when I came back. Doesn’t work so great in department stores!
cant help laughing, last year when i was back to China I also experienced some reverse culture shock lol
lol I "binged" it, yep I had to use the bing from time to time.
Every individual face along with their rated # is in the big brother cloud database 😂
I’ve never seen the squatting and negotiating tactic while I was driving n Shanghai
So I have cultural shock moving from Henan to Shanghai. I now have trouble staying in my hometown in Henan for over a week.
In some very small and traditional cities men may do that, but still very rare those days. It’s not a very decent gesture as perceived nowadays anyway...it’s a typical Asian squatting though, since I’ve seen many in movies presenting old society of China
I just head back to China after 6 years staying in US for school, reverse culture shock too! This video is really funny, haha.
Only people who went to China will understand the trash can scene haha~~
Or South Korea, I've been in America for a week and I was so confused about the trash. I'm ashamed to say that I just left the trash next to the trash bin.
I don't understand is it because all the trash cans are closed and they feel gross to open it? Pls tell me the reason hahaha
Zuhal Fidan wait.... there is no recycle bin in most of the foreign cuntry?
Hahahhahaa love the parody 🤣
Not being able to understand advertisements is also underrated.
So did you actually film part of this in the US? I would have thought you shot it in Shanghai if it weren't for the appearance of Francis B******l.
It was all filmed in New York with one scene (the job interview) at RUclipss Space in LA.
Mamahuhu Cool. So everyone in the vid was in the US, including Alessio?
100%! By the way, you can follow us on other social media to see the progress of this shoot and future ones.
Mamahuhu Thanks. Good to know. I've started following you on two other social media.
I'm Chinese moved into the u.s when I was 6. Culture shock is nothing new to me, I joined the U.S military after I graduated high school, been to Germany, Canada and Kuwait. After I did my time, I went back to China for 2 weeks as vacation, experiencing reverse culture shock is nothing because I got used to it
I'm surprised there was no mention of struggling with being re-introduced to standing in line. Unless Shanghai is different?
quibily yap shanghai people are the most disciplined in China,in shanghai most people will standing in line
That is not culture difference. That's considered bad in every countries.
I miss the loud mamahuhu beginning that let's you know it's a mamahuhu video :(
ahahaha, last part is so fun... friends price.... friends price....
I hold it until the paying bill part... Man that one was good LOL
Not really. Very related here.
The waiter should have brought iced water...then the "laowai" stares at the water as if hell just froze over
Here's a big one: cutting in lines. I began doing it all the time after my return from China.
And going inside the metro trains before everybody leaves.
Leon Campa you don't learn sth good but into bad behavior
Well at least we don't jaywalk like people in us do
Coming back from living in Korea it was strange for everyone to order their own meals and eat it individually- also tipping. I also missed being able to just go and pay up front when I was done instead of waiting an eternity for the check to pay.
I can’t stop laughing
I did not have much reverse culture shock. I enjoyed the set prices (and not the ¨special¨ increased ¨friend¨prices), the vibrant colors and non polluted skies. I mean, when you did find set prices (electronics especially) or food, they were cheaper, so I missed that, the usa is just too expensive. But overall, it was not too hard to adapt. I did not miss random people taking photos of me for no reason.
Travel Man how long had you been in china ?
Here in the US I was once being taught to IGNORE garbage classification and MAKE MY LIFE EASIER by putting it in the most convenient ones. And the uber drivers park illegally here too, like right behind a stop sign. Pretty sure it's a no stopping zone.
One of the best videos in my opinion!
Spent 13 YEARS in China and tried moving back...didn't work. I stuck it out for 2 years and then came straight back to China.
Absolutely brilliant! Joe is awesome!
This is so true!! Love it hahaha!!! I'm just afraid of bumping people back at home haha
Oh there the friend of Donnie :D
Sure it doesn't, but this is sketch comedy that's reflecting on the behaviors of Foreigners in China and what they have interpreted from interacting with some locals.
what really got me lauging is the bargein moment the guys suats witha cigarrette and the friend price, can you imagine Americans doing that?
