This scene left me speechless! Like, imagine how difficult is to remember the script and put also all those nuances, the energy, the anger in the acting...outstanding.
It might also be a bit meta in that most if not every actor in this show irl must have gone through a lot of the same problems And this show knows exactly how to tell the kind of stories women and people like Sally have and still are going through in the world and in hollywood. They are SHOWING gender discrimination, abuse, and exploitation in the industry, not saying. It's brilliant. And she's not this saintly figure, she's like anyone else we would know.
I think this is one of the most realistic mental breakdowns I've ever seen on TV. The way she speaks, the mannerisms... gives you the real illusion that's she's speaking her mind without filter, just putting together the thoughts that were popping up on her mind, like real people do. Extraordinary acting.
Sarah Goldberg acted the shit out of this! Halfway through her monologue I realized that the camera hadn't cut away... she was doing it in one take. My jaw was on the floor at the end of the scene.
Man, Sally is literally the most realistic character I have ever seen in a show or movie. It sucks that some people don't get her. The actress is amazing, I hope she gets an Emmy
She's a bitch, but that doesn't make her a bad character. I'd hate her in real life but hell, Barry's a pushover who kills people for a living. No one's perfect. There's more to Barry than being a killer, just as much as there is more to Sally than being a narcissistic bitch. They are both great characters.
I have to say, this is one of greatest acting monologue/rant I have EVER seen. On the day I was watching this episode, I stopped and backed this up to rewatch several times before completing the episode. Sarah Goldberg is an incredible actress!
sarah is like a acting machine flexing all her muscles and using inhuman amounts of strength to draw out the punchline of the scene to it's extreme. and then bill comes in and lets the arrow loose with perfect finesse and timing. a perfect scene.
The breaks she took in the middle to act polite like "feature..which is a same thing as a movie PS". What an incredible delivery! She is awesome and very realistic
Not to downplay Sarah Goldberg's amazing monologue here, but the bookending quote of "Hey Ike, you shitbird, you want a little pieeee??" is the funniest moment of this show so far.
No it’s perfect!! See her character takes L’ s in the industry so does she irl!!! Nah I’m playing, Sally without a doubt easily became one of fav characters, whereas in S1 she was arrogant, mean, and really unlikable. This scene had me dead and yeah she shouldda fuckin won.
One of the most memorable scenes of the show. Barry's face at the end threw me off so hard. He's got that 'What the fuck was all that?' face going, but then he just dives back into his script, lol. So many great moments. Definitely Sally's best moment on the show so far.
When I first saw this scene, on a big TV screen, and even looking back on this now, I’m just as speechless and astounded as I was, This actress deserves every accolade that she receives.
I love how they juxtaposed this amazing, incredible 2 minute and 9 second one-take monologue/character unraveling from Sally with what could be the actual worst written line of the entire series. This show is genius on so many levels.
I love love love Sally since season one. Her imperfections make her a really great character you don't often get to see in TV shows. So glad that in season two Sarah got such juicy material to work with!
What I’ve learned from Sally’s character is that she’s narcissistic and wants to be better than everyone else. Her actor is absolutely amazing though, she’s playing the character perfectly.
That’s what makes this scene so amazing. The character is given so much depth here without forgetting that she’s very self-centered. (I think the most honest moment is when she says how happy she is for Barry to get the audition with the director, but it’s also driving her crazy.) It’s a very thin line to walk and Sarah Goldberg nails it perfectly.
After watching the Season 2, I have to find this video on youtube, and give out a big damn like for this scene. It's really breathtaking, I mean really, get her some Air!
I think seeing this scene the first time was the hardest I've ever laughed. Getting invested in the raw monologue then Bill Hader's face afterwards and then him just continuing with the silly line as if nothing happened just got me on the floor. I still just pull the scene up and laugh wishing I can see it for the first time once again. One of my favorite TV/movie scenes ever
billhaderisbarry Why the heck are people saying such bad things about Sally? She is super likable in my opinion. She inspires Barry to follow his dreams and is only human to be jealous! She’s a great character and Sarah is an amazing actress
Conner of Dill Creek I disagree. I think she is so desperate to follow her dream to become a legitimate artist and at times, pursuing your dreams can be frustrating
Topping off that extremely heartfelt monologue with... "Hey Ike, You shitbird, You want a little Piiieeeeee?" This show is just full of totally brilliant clashes like that
I'm so happy I've found other people that loved this scene. My jaw hit the floor w/ this performance! I love this show on so many levels. The story is great, but I love tuning in to see this amazing cast just chop it up.
I absolutely love when any gifted actor takes a monologue and crafts it into an existential, hard-bop improvisation on camera. From her expanding genre tropes instead of devolving into a rote parroting of them, she offers parody of her strivings for parity, with insight as infinitesimally razor sharp and loaded as the stain of The Casting Couch seeps and fades underfoot and in our rearview. And the inner dialogue within her monologue, those brilliant questions and asides to her "Self" delivered in an increasingly unhinged and loaded annunciation of her own name ("right, SALLY?!") perfectly externalize and resonate, regardless of gender.
i dont know for the life of me how an actor could memories all those lines, i mean you have to remember "Ike", then to call him a shitbird and then to offer him some pie? and the way Bill Hader delivered those words with such honesty and depth? Wow.
There is a weird part of the fandom that hates Sally and totally justifies Barry, and I get it. Bill Hader is cute. He is hot. He is funny. He is talented. His character is sympathetic in some rights. When he cries, its genuinely heartbreaking, but the man is a murderer. Bill has even pointed this out. Sally is realistically a little high strung but she is an abuse victim with a lot of internalized trauma and fear who has been putting so much time into reaching her dream only for people to surpass her with not nearly as much talent and drive. She is frustrated. She wants to be happy for Barry but she can't stand to be held back when she put so much time in. How is that worthy of hate?
There were a couple episodes in the first season where Sally was a very unsympathetic character, where she seemed to take advantage of Barry's unwavering support and friendship. Second season Sally is like a different person. Like the writers smartened up and made her a better character.
Sally is a well written and acted character. You're supposed to be conflicted with her, that's why it is done so well. You like her, your hate her, you think she's good for Barry and his journey but also think she is a self centered entitled drama queen. Anyone who fully likes her or dislikes her is only getting half the picture.
They actually don't get the show at all and want some sort of dark comedy version of Punisher. They don't realise it's about people like Sally that drives the story forward. Sally and Barry's passion for acting are what's important, not the hitman stuff. And they cannot deal with a real character like Sally.
I'm late to the Barry part and I just watched this scene, after a pause I rewound it and watched it again. Wow! She nailed it. It was nuanced and awesome. 👏
0:54 "but then, so many other women have the same story..." That's a really nice little detail. She completely forgets that fact during her elevator meltdown when she's screaming at Natalie for making a show that reminds her of Joplin.
Also, I noticed Sally has the same attitude towards Barry as she does toward Natalie in S3 ("I MADE you!"). I just realized that rewatching this scene. The most impressive part, I think, is that I know from behind-the-scenes stuff that Hader and his writers were "discovery" writers, so they didn't plan this ahead of time. They found a way to make it pay off after the fact. As a writer who has to plan his stories out for them to go anywhere, I really admire their ability to make that work.
That was fucking incredible and im infuriated this clip does not have more views, this is just fantastic writing, and a fantastic performance that I did not want to end, my god.
How the hell does this get written? It's spectacular and the performance is incredible. i still love Barry's tag at the end. He's just listened to her rant and seamlessly goes from stunned to back to his reading lol
Sarah KILLED it! And the delivery of "Hey Ike, you shitbird, you want a little PIEEE" 😂😂 That's the most SNL Bill we'll ever see on Barry 😂😂😂
Bill can only write and coach a shit actress so much. She is garbage.
@George Gershwin he doesn't voice many south park characters he did some additional voices for like 2 seasons 10 years ago lmao
This scene left me speechless! Like, imagine how difficult is to remember the script and put also all those nuances, the energy, the anger in the acting...outstanding.
Matthew Shezmen My dude!! Love your work.
There apparently was a lot of improvisation on Sarah's part according to Bill Hader. She's incredible.
She's a theatre actress so this was right in her wheelhouse. She actually made it longer... What a legend.
It might also be a bit meta in that most if not every actor in this show irl must have gone through a lot of the same problems
And this show knows exactly how to tell the kind of stories women and people like Sally have and still are going through in the world and in hollywood. They are SHOWING gender discrimination, abuse, and exploitation in the industry, not saying. It's brilliant. And she's not this saintly figure, she's like anyone else we would know.
What is this show? That’s the guy from SNL isn’t it? Is this a skit?
I think this is one of the most realistic mental breakdowns I've ever seen on TV. The way she speaks, the mannerisms... gives you the real illusion that's she's speaking her mind without filter, just putting together the thoughts that were popping up on her mind, like real people do. Extraordinary acting.
couldn’t have said it better myself, the change in tone at 2:05 soooo fucking good
This is a mental breakdown? I do this every day... huh
Breakdowns YOU have ever seen on the TV? Is it real or Memorex?
I love the end when she says continue like she knows she's being crazy but really needed to get this out or she'd lose it
She's great
Sarah Goldberg acted the shit out of this! Halfway through her monologue I realized that the camera hadn't cut away... she was doing it in one take. My jaw was on the floor at the end of the scene.
You know there is still something like acting on a stage, while this monologue for a TV-Series is only under 3 minutes long.
Well, she did that monologue in one shot. But, it may have been done in more than one take.
Same, I cheered afterwards.
i love his reaction. hes just like "im not sure im ready to process everything you just said so let me just continue reading this terrible script."
As Abed Nadir once said, “I need help reacting to something.”
The moment where she briefly contemplates becoming "the face of a movement" is so goddamn funny. Sarah Goldberg kicks ass.
i’ve watched this monologue like three times now and that part always gets me
Bruh why haven't I seen her in more stuff, seems like a top notch actor.
@@user_2793 Most of her work is on the stage.
She really is a great actress!
Agreed. Shame I don't see her in a lot more roles. Imagine her in a horror movie. 😳
Barry's transition from being dead serious to rehearsing the line had me ROLLING.
Man, Sally is literally the most realistic character I have ever seen in a show or movie. It sucks that some people don't get her. The actress is amazing, I hope she gets an Emmy
Shane L I know! She definitely deserves an Emmy.

Well deserved Emmy nom. She's incredible. The show's incredible.
S L I’m a male and completely agree
The way she delivers “and look how strong you are now, SALLY” is perfect. It kills me every time 😂
“S-YALLY”
My favorite part! Lol
I had the exact same expression as Barry when her monologue ended
WANT A LITTLE PIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIE
I have to say, this is one of greatest acting monologue/rant I have EVER seen. On the day I was watching this episode, I stopped and backed this up to rewatch several times before completing the episode. Sarah Goldberg is an incredible actress!
rackt09 same
Man this season is FULL of award winning performances. I didnt think they could top Season 1 but damn, they did it!
leonthesleepy Even Stephen Roots who was fine the first season carried some emotional weight on him this time
sarah is like a acting machine flexing all her muscles and using inhuman amounts of strength to draw out the punchline of the scene to it's extreme. and then bill comes in and lets the arrow loose with perfect finesse and timing. a perfect scene.
....Hey, Ike, ya shitbird! You wanna little PIIIIEEEE???

Sarah better get an Emmy nomination
It'd be ironic if she didn't.
She did! Woohoo!
Finn McCool She did! I cheered so loud!
ask and you shall receive...
narrator: for some fucking reason... she didn't
2:34 I feel like that was the best response to have in this situation.
chromosome24 that long pause 🤣
she was robbed. she shouldve won the emmy. this was the most perfect thing ive ever seen.
No it’s perfect!!
See her character takes L’ s in the industry so does she irl!!!

Yes. Yes, she does. She needs all the Emmys!
billhaderisbarry Actually she got it.
Conor Tague I know. Well deserved
This is one of the best pieces of acting I've ever seen on TV. It's criminal that she doesn't get more praise for this show because she is incredible.
She reminds me of what I used to be and every other girl I've met who can't get away from jealousy and insecurity. Spot on performance.
The way she delivered her line.. Amazing. HBO has eyes for finding new talents
Barry's face at the end
This is one of my favorite monologues from ANY tv show in recent memory. The way she did this, just wow! Such a gifted actress.

I didn't expect that monologue to be so brilliantly worded and so brilliantly delivered. Wow! Just realistic as sh!t.
I remember reading that they trusted only her with this scene because she has a natural talent for remembering a ton of lines
Did anyone else hear Towlie when he said “pieeee”? 😂😂
Great choice to clip. Was blown away by that scene for how great it was in both concept and acting.
His expression when she’s done talking and how he just goes back into character had me dying 🤣😂🤣
What I’ve learned from Sally’s character is that she’s narcissistic and wants to be better than everyone else. Her actor is absolutely amazing though, she’s playing the character perfectly.

The way Barry just gets back into it automatically after lmao
This is just a phenomenal piece of acting!
Along with Barry, Sally is just such a complex character. Love Sarah's performance.
This is one of the greatest monologues I’ve ever witnessed EVER…
