These moments don't come very often. Yet, even though I live in San Diego and had never been a part of WCBS's regular listening audience, I am sorry to see it fade into memory. But, I'm happy that we RUclipsrs, wherever we are, can share in this special moment when WCBS signed off for the final time. Thank you, WCBS 880 AM!!!
71 years old and this makes me very sad. I've listened to WCBS Newsradio 880 for decades, since my teens. Since leaving the Tri State area many years ago I still DXed WCBS during late night/early morning. Thanks for all you did. A piece of Americana is gone. 😥
@@vjr4763 DX is listening to distant stations (non local) using atmospheric conditions most favorable at night. Specifically, here using an AM radio to tune in stations.
DX means seeking and listening to distant radio stations using a terrestrial AM radio also known as MW (medium wave) DX ing. Because of atmospheric conditions, this best done at late night, early morning. WCBS a 50 k watt Clear Channel station, very strong for night listening. That's what DX means. Wow, the names 🥺 We'll miss you! 880 guided me through alot of life, news, sports and current events. 1995 - 2024...incredible. - Avid listener, New London County, CT.
This was the "BEST" 24 hour all news format in the Metro NY area. I listened to this in the 60's when it went on the air. All will always remember this as their 50,000-watt signal was heard up and down the East Coast at night. Goodbye WCBS News Radio 880.
its not corporate greed, because WCBS was one of the top grossing stations in the nation...I think they wanted to lessen expenses having a full staff for a news radio behemoth. Its them being CHEAP more than anything
Thanks for teaching me about news politics ,business, social and society issues. And how to be reliable. Giving facts and being reliable is hard to find today. No one going to be upset about a radio news station going away. But it is something that we have always had available to us. Thank You for everything.
Great send off, Wayne! This was extremely well done! My only question is: What is wrong with CBS? They have News Radio Stations in Chicago (WBBM), Los Angeles ( KNX) and many other cities. WINS is a former Westinghouse Station and is a poor comparison to WCBS. It is very impersonal and plastic, by comparison! WCBS personalized the connection with listeners! That is what made it great!👍🥳🇺🇸
Having grown up on Long Island and seeing the demise of WABC/WPLJ, WLIR and WNEW-FM, this seems to hurt more because it has been lost due to technology and changing of radio to streaming; and that phone we carry that gives instant weather and traffic. On the other hand - better to go out this way than to have the announcers replaced with AI voices. MMMaaaxxxx Headroom anyone? Having some experience in community radio, I did some diving into today's radio business. It is just like when AT&T sold off their land lines in CT to Frontier. The big companies are selling off their radio stations, figuring that eventually everything will be streaming in some fashion and actual (AM at least) broadcasting will be gone. Will be deleting 880 from my car radio....😥
880 still aired select Sunday night and Thursday night football games during the NFL season and had been airing more sporting events since 2002 when it began a stint as flagship station of the New York Yankees. After that stint ended it became the flagship station of the New York Mets in 2019.
The death of WCBS 880-AM New York aka Newsradio 88 is criminal. Fuck Audacy! I don't even live in the New York metro area anymore, but, as an expatriate blue state New Yorker living in red state Missouri, streaming WCBS was my opiate to remind me that I am native New Yorker. It's important to feel connected to home and WCBS was my connection. Like all good radio, there is a connection between the broadcasters and the listeners. WCBS had good broadcasters such as Wayne Cabot. I am not saying WINS is not a good station - certainly capable of delivering the news - but it's not the same. It comes across as more anemic and less warm than WCBS did. This is one reason why I streamed WCBS and only occasionally WINS. I haven't bothered streaming WINS. It's an empty feeling; like being the bridesmaid after the wedding is over. So, now, I feel a bit disconnected but the closest thing I have is streaming Mets or Yankees games. ... and now that John Sterling has retired, now listening to Yankees games is like listening to WINS. Losing the great broadcasters like Wayne Cabot or John Sterling is like the killing of radio by 1000 cuts.
Listen for a half hour and get all the news plus sports. Although sometimes I didn’t get all the scores and had to wait another half hour. But it was always there to tune in. Thanks. Will miss you.
Wow I was wondering what the heck was going on. I was thinking what the hell is wrong with my clock radio dial.Lol I thought this thing is not moving off WFAN sportsradio. The only way I could sleep was to turn on newsradio 88 and put it on a low volume. That has been my routine for the past 57 years.
This station weaved the fabric of my life. This is a death to me that was Not necessary. I will always remember this radio family that reared me daily, guided me with the information on everything , and was there for me day & night. I will truly ALWAYS miss you all and hope to never lose sight of where you go. I tearfully tthank you for every day, every word and everything you reporters gave to me. Love you all 💔💙🙏
The segment that goes through the panoply of sounders that WCBS used made me appreciate sounder-free, audio clutter-free National Public Radio all the more.
This is sad. I grew up in the NYC area. I would have the radio on news radio 88, and sometimes when I slept. Just how many sports radio stations do we need?
They should have negotiated to go off the air at 12:10. You needed that one last TONE for the time and then the CBS national news and then ... the station should have signed off with the playing of the National Anthem.
@dorothysewing9997 Not going to happen. But there will be plenty of radio revamps all across the nation going forward --- local all-news format stations signing off to rebrand as 24/7 sports-radio. We all want to know more about how our college and university teams are scoring, and less about what's actually going on in our communities, right?
Cigar smoking suits at Audacy own both 1010 WINS and Newsradio 880. Why have two identical format stations serving the same area? Sad but sort of makes sense. :(
@@O.G.LIL-MAN They could not have sold the station, because the call letters W-*CBS* weren't Audacy's to sell. Those CBS call letter rights belong ultimately to CBS proper.
@mecklenburgd Why not both W-INS and W-CBS in the same market? After all, Audacy already owns W-FAN 660 AM so by corporate logic why add another all-sports radio station at W-HSQ 880 AM, ESPN in this case, in the same market? The signal from the 'suits' is loud and clear: quality broadcast news is redundant to them, so pump out more and more mind-numbing sports-talk wherever they can. Sports is much more important to a democracy than quality journalism ever could be, right? Could greed have had 'anything' in the world to do with the decision?🤑
Now KCBS 740 San Francisco, CA / KNX 1070 Los Angeles, CA / WBBM 780 Chicago, IL / KYW 1060 Philadelphia, PA & the rest of the CBS News AM stations across the USA will end & change to ESPN Radio with in the next few weeks. 98.7 FM in New York is also ESPN Radio & at the end of the month it will change format & WSHQ 880 ESPN Radio will also be on WCBS FM 101.1 HD 2 as well. -Cheers!
There are NO plans to flip those news formats to sports. They already have a news outlet in the market 1010/92.3 WINS and most of the CBS/Audacy are simulcasting on the FM Dial.
My morning always started with WCBS 88 news radio and I didn't even know til last week that news radio can also close as it's as it's necessary service for public. Made me upset. Hate it they did it for no obvious reason.
