End of an Era: The final minutes of WCBS 880AM

- Today, August 26th, 2024, marks the fall of a giant in the news reporting world. WCBS 880AM of New York City ceases to exist, as of 12:01AM this morning. Longtime news anchor Wayne Cabot signed off for the last time at 11:59PM on August 25th, with a minute of silence before formats changed to WHSQ 880, an all-sports radio station. WCBS came into existence as an all-news station on August 28th, 1967, nearly 60 years ago. Now, it is nothing more than a memory, falling victim to streamlining of news media in New York City to just one station, 1010 WINS, while being replaced by WHSQ. As Wayne so eloquently put it, "Our news desert is getting bigger and drier......we need to seek out more, and more varied news sources that we trust, because getting your information without the bias and brainwashing in one place has given way to a fight to stay informed. With each closing newspaper, radio newsroom, TV newsroom, magazine, now even digital news operations, the country we love is diminished. So, as we leave the news ecosystem after 57 years of all news, and 100 years of service on New York radio, we implore you to find that next trusted source. Use it, support it, in word and, indeed, it is the most patriotic thing you can do, and the most satisfying." I can only speak for myself, but I agree; the City of New York, as well as the nation, is greatly diminished with the loss of WCBS 880AM. Unfortunately, change is inevitable, this time, for the worse.

WCBS gave you NEWS not sensationalism. Hearing this made me cry. I grew up with these guys. Who could forget tuning in to hear school closings???
While I was more of a 1010 WINS person, CBS 880 was still great whenever I listened to it, and losing it absolutely sucks.
Since 9/11, I’ve listened to 88 ONLY on my hour commute to and from work. This is a really hard ending for me. Thanks folks… you are/were the best
We've lost so many New York radio stations we grew up with, Smooth Jazz CD-101.9, 98.7 Kiss FM, 93.5 WVIP, 95.5 WPLJ and now WCBS 880.
This is a heartbreaking day for millions of us native New Yorkers. 💔
Also, wrfm 105 and wpat 95
Don’t forget 102.7 WNEW
Dont forget WBLS, Frankie Crocker😢
KROCK/Alt 92.3, WLIR 92.7, and for those of us who live in the Hudson Valley, WFAS 104.7.
@@tessfenmore6180 Well at least 1010 WINS is still here😮
Thank you for posting this. I was away and was not able to hear live. The final seconds gave me chills. The WCBS jingle was part of the soundtrack of my life.
Ever time I watch this over and over again, the final seconds always give me chills.
I am a radio enthusiast and so I come here to hear again and again the final words of WCBS 880 AM.
Thank you for capturing this - I was disappointed that I missed it last night
Thank you for posting this. So sad that the NYC area is losing such a staple.
Listened it’s last second ever of broadcasting, and heard espn ny sign on… It feels so sad, and I’m not even from NY! No matter where you live, you will feel sad if a station lasting for so many decades signs off
We will miss you wcbs, one of America’s most well known stations, and at night, covered all of eastern North America
@@BFDI2006 I live in NYC so I could hear WCBS and WINS any time but when I was a kid, I used to love DXing on my transistor radio and listening to stations late at night up and down the east coast and into the Midwest. WKBW, WOWO, WWVA, WBBM, WSB, WBZ, et al. I even kept a list of the call letters and frequencies I heard. Nice memories.
Just listened to this on two of my favorite zenith radios. Cannot believe we lost 880 so soon.
I thought it would outlast us all… A NY staple, I’ve been an 88 guy over WINS all my life. We lost 66 NBC, CBS, now ABC is the last of the big 3 with a call sign in New York. (Aside from cbs fm 101 but still not an AM flagship station) Very saddening.
At least we still have 1010 wins...
Thanks for the upload. I'm just outside of Detroit, where I would regularly catch WCBS at night. Our CBS/Audacy station looks to be safe (WWJ), but it still sucks to see a stalwart go.
In the evenings when the signal switched over, I could pick up WCBS in Durham, NC, and it was clearer than some of the local stations.
In the span of 12 days, we lost 900 CHML, Hamilton, Canada, and WCBS-AM. CHML broadcasted for 97 years before Corus Entertainment shut it down on August 14th, and WCBS had its all-news format for 57 years before Audacy, damn you Audacy, cut the format in favour of WHSQ, ESPN 880. Rest in peace WCBS-AM, gone too soon.
@jaycemacinnis2228: CHML is no longer broadcasting either?? I live in NYC but I would often listen to CHML via TuneIn Radio. Good station. What a shame.
@cak813 Nope. CHML went off the air two Wednesdays ago. Damn you, Corus, and Damn you, Audacy.
@@jaycemacinnis2228 Thanks for that info. Very sad to hear.
@@cak813 I agree. There's a video of the CHML shutdown online here on RUclips.
@@cak813I agree. If you search it up, there's a RUclips video that shows the CHML shutdown.
I remember "Let's Find Out" on Sunday nights on WCBS. They would discuss issues in New York City each week. Just one of many great programs they broadcast over the years. WCBS is a great loss.❤
Thank you for posting. This is so very sad. No more neutral news and in depth coverage. No more local information necessary for the trip state area. Exceptional talents, exceptional broadcasts. For SPORTS?! More competition, conflict and unnessary division for our already troubled society. How sad. What a shame.
Thank you for posting this.
This country’s weird obsession with sports boggles my mind.
WEll, it's like a good friend of mine said sarcastically, "what we need is another sports station...." Bread and circuses
R.I.P. WCBS 880, without you this world slowly falls into chaos.🕯️ 📰 🕯️
It covered major events throughout the years like 9/11, the recession and the covid 19 pandemic
@@Frankieefootballmundial indeed. Such a shame that audacy shut it all down.... :(
Yep, eff Audacy.
I knew the sign off was coming, but it still hit me like a ton of bricks. 9:35 in is where it happens.
It is an absolute end of an era. Between the news, baseball games and all inbetween. Heartbreaking it is gone.
A heartless decision.
Very, VERY sad day. I'm crying about it. Wayne Cabots' outro was surreal
Do you know if this was live or pre-recorded?
I was using a old radio I grew up with to listen to this. I grew up with WCBS, especially during my childhood and teen years back in the 90's and early 2000's. Truly was a sad moment in radio history.... I'm still mad ESPN aired right after that....
Did you honestly think ESPN wasn't gonna go live soon as midnight switched over? This is ESPN we're talking about. At least there was a respectable amount of silence after Wayne Cabot signed off. I'm sure it was planned that way but it worked.
Wow, thanks so much for posting!
WCBS had a better overall signal in outlying areas versus WINS, owing to its non directional signal. It sucks but at least Audacy allowed special shows to air to celebrate the history, which is a rarity these days. This clip will be played decades from now and that’s why recording the history like this is important.
Thanks for the entire recording. All others I've found stopped recording and didn't capture the new sign on.
We listened to this station back when I was a little kid in East Keansburg, New Jersey. So sad a great radio station is now dead.
KGO in San Francisco went to sports radio a while ago. Looks as if most of the major markets will have just one news station in their respective markets. So long WCBS😢
Well now news can be found on social media which can be toxic and misleading
Audacy,you don't know Jack.
Wow, I listened to this station on my drive to work in Toronto Canada.
Indeed, another great loss!!
Indeed!
That statement about where to get news was pretty much him asking, "What are they gonna do, fire me?"
Thank you for recording this
As an on-air radio refugee no longer employable but who nonetheless dedicated myself to the radio arts, this is truly sad. As my career progressed and my focus shifted from spinning records and producing spots to a concentration on news, WCBS 880 was the standard for presentation and content that I consistently looked to and tried in my own small way to emulate.
Excellent 11 minutes of youtube documenting news radio 88 end of an era. I grew up with this station, every moring while I lived in Manhatten I listen for the daily weather before school, Thats all we cared about back then, and then we grew up and tuned in for traffic and news. Moon landing, presidential results, 911........... Imagine a world without news radio 880....................🥲❤👁
I haven't felt this bad since CD 101.9 went off the air. Damn shame. NYC loses another piece of its soul.
To yet another sports radio station. Makes me sick.
Thank you
I DONT NEED SPORTS RADIO JUNK
THERES GONNA BE NO MORE NEWS ANYMORE
Podcasts sports seems better
@@Frankieefootballmundial TRUE
Thank you for this. I'm trying to save everything I can about this end of an era.
Makes me sick to my stomach.
WHERES THE NEWS? ALL I HEAR IS SPORTS NOW GARBAGE
1010 IS ON
THEY BETTER NOT LEAVE
GOT ME THROUGH HARD TIMES
IT DOES MAKE ME SICK
This (losing WCBS 880) sucks. 🤬
Just what the world needs, another all-sports station.
I also listened to the last 10 minutes or so last night, and man somehow I was actually sad.
Same
This is much more serious than CJBK 1290 signing off the air last year.
very sad
Morning routines will never be the same. WCBS made home feel like home.
Wow, the sounders and voiceovers sound just like what was used at WTOP here in the Washington DC area years ago, I know WTOP has a partnership with CBS radio but the sounders are different today then 8 years ago and I miss hearing them.
Wow, all I listened to was 1010 and 880. RIP WCBS.
We still have 1010 wins
Wow thank you I really wanted those chimes saved!
I remember taking a road trip to Lancaster County, PA and still getting WCBS 880 on the car radio. Was able to listen to Yankees baseball there when it used to be on WCBS
RIP WCBS 880... It's so sad that this radio station went off the air. Local news is declining. Now there's one less real news radio station in NYC that gives you the latest news without sensationalism and hyper-partisan bias. Look on the bright side, at least 1010 WINS is still on the air. Thank you to everyone at WCBS and Audacy (including its predecessor CBS Radio) for keeping New Yorkers and everyone else around the world who tuned in online informed.
0:15 - core memory unlocked!
According to your preset,it seems that 880 was your favorite preset station.thanks for posting this.
I actually thought something was wrong with my radio in my car the other day when 880 did not come in and some sports station was on - I loved WCBS 880 - and had not listened to my radio as much lately since I worked from home. I will miss this station been listening since late 80's- very sad day indeed
Thank you for having this recorded. And of all things to begin the new stations, it has to be the freakin Mets.
Been listening since I was a child with my grandparents. Thank you WCBS 880!
Thanks for this. Because we all needed espn on AM…the only one left is 1010 wins and I hope they don’t fk with that station.
Sad that this happened. Probably not going to be the last goodbye for the audacy news and news talk stations across the country
I live in Wisconsin and can get your signal at night. Sorry to see you go. I hope WTMJ and WCCO which cover our state don’t disappear also.
Thanks for this preservation.
Don’t we have enough Sports Radio/Talk?
I know, right?
According to SWLOfficial WCBS has been sold to another Sports Broadcaster.
Dead air at 12:00, a sad commentary on the fate of unbiased news.
A legendary station signs off...and now listeners get sports squawk radio....
Absolutely heartbreaking!
Even NYC does not need two all news stations. 1010 WINS does a fine job and since Audacy is broke, they needed to do with one of them. Will miss hearing Wayne Cabot and Steve Scott reading the news during rush hour. It's strange not to hear the WCBS call sign anymore on 880.
WCBS on 880, is now... WHSQ ''High Sports Quality''; ''880 ESPN New York'' But WCBS 880's news legacy will never be forgotten!
The way it ended gave me chills
it's so sad.
what a great station, RIP
A Legend Has Fallen.
Good by WCBS NEWS 880 and The USA 🇺🇸 💔
Worthless sports broadcasting.
WCBS could be heard in the mid-west (and probably further) at night. Corporate radio rules the airways. Political talk or ESPN from one end of the dial to the other.
WKCW 1420 AM the big "K" -never forget. WPEN 950 AM- station of the stars- never forget
WCAU 98.1 hot hits
WJJZ 106.1 smooth jazz
99.1 WHFS Alt Rock
WDRE 103.9 Alt Rock
WINC-FM 92.5 (Barry Lee)
WWDB 96.5 Talk radio
WPST 97.5 (Mel Toxic)
WYSP 94.1 classic rock
WMGK 102.9 (Harvey)
WEAZ 101.1 EZ101
106.1 The Eagle!
So many stations make up my love of music. So many personalities. Introduced me to the classics like Sid Mark spinning "Sundays with ...Sinatra"
My life reflects these different genres over the years of what I was listening to and what I was wearing and who I loved. When these stations change format it chips away at our personal history and is a constant reminder of how short life is. Sad to see things we loved change into something else. The feeling of loss is overwhelming. Time keeps on ticking ticking... Into the future.
1010 WINS!!!! (sorry had to)
they have switch over to wcbs 2
That crappy tinny audio quality probably didn't help the station.
It's an AM station....that's how they sound.
@@OrangeYTT They don't all have that tin can compression.
And always live on the Audacy app.
🫣😢😭
:-(
U know the ol sayin GOOD THINGS MUST COME 2 AN END. RELATIONSHIPS MARRIAGE JOBS ETC.....& ALSO RADIO STATION FORMATS. WCBS NEWSRADIO 880 1967-2024
Naw, this didn't have to end - corporate dipshittery ended this one IMO.
Thank you for this recording. I will miss them.
Of couse they died!! Too much horrible, useless music before any useful information!!!
So sad
