Correct, as for CBS-branded call signs Audacy would need to change them after 20 years of merger with Audacy/Entercom per CBS Trademarks Licence Agreement It means, WCBS-FM, KCBS, and KCBS-FM will be replaced in the future. For the rest of call signs, such as WBZ, WJZ, KYW, KDKA, WWJ, WCCO, WBBM... there's no such needs because CBS assigned perpetual licenses to whoever operates the radio stations (such as Audacy for most of them, iHeartMedia for WBZ, and Beasley)
This is the worst news I've ever heard! How could Audacy be so irresponsible?! We need WCBS, especially since 1010 WINS does not come in clearly in upstate New York. WINS is NOT really a New York radio station, since its transmitter and antenna are located all the way in Lyndhurst, New Jersey. I listened to WCBS every day since I was a teenager. They are putting a lot of good journalists and announcers out of work and they don't care. What's to say that Audacy doesn't do the same to 1010 WINS? I will most definitely miss them. Good luck to the entire staff at 880 WCBS.
I've got "news" for you. I can't even hear WINS AM in central NJ. Barely in the daytime. Nonexistent at night. A maritime friend tells me it comes in great in the Ambrose Channel though. For all of the boats/ships entering the harbor, looking for FDR Drive traffic updates...
WINS is on FM 92.3 so that transmitter is in the city of New York, so you can’t say that. If you guys are complaining about 1010, go to FM 92.3 and start listening there.
We here in Pittsburgh lost our all news radio station (1410 KQV) several years ago, and I still miss it DAILY, Sad to see another one go. Some of us out here still listen to the radio, and would like to still have a station to pop on whenever we want to catch up on the news. Reading it on the phone is just not the same. Sad!
I'm 60. WOW, this is really sad. First I heard of this.... Change, sometimes, is good, sometimes bad. My generation always tuned in to WCBS radio with their familiar "headline music or alert noise or whatever you call it" for decades. Ugh. Journalism these dsys sucks.❤
Whenever my wife and I needed to go somewhere in New York City and the surrounding area we would tune to Traffic on the 8s. Its a sad day for New York City. Gonna miss it. 😢
Been listening forever. My claim to fame is when I got stuck on the 59th street bridge. I managed to get the vehicle going and as I drove off heard the announcement that the vehicle on the bridge had gotten underway.
This really breaks my heart. 😢💔 WCBS 880 was the heart and soul of the Big Apple. I will always have childhood memories of me and my mom hailing a cab to appointments and hearing NewsRadio 880 on the radio every time and I always hear this station on the school bus every morning on the way to school. This is a huge heartbreak for people who were born and raised in the NYC metropolitan area like me who grew up listening to this station in taxi cabs and on school buses. Thanks for the memories WCBS 880. We'll miss you and you're always and forever in our New York hearts Rest In Peace NewsRadio 880. ❤️
Running a news operation is an order of magnitude mire expensive than hanging a few microphones in front of a bunch of sports bros. Add to that that the pockets of the potential advertisers (online sports gambling anyone?) are infinitely deeper than those of the current advertisers on 880 and you marvel that it didn't happen sooner. The same thing happened upstate. WKBW, a legendary AM station during the dawn and flowering of rock and roll, is "your sports betting source" today. Did mention that it too is owned by Audacy? I don't begrudge Audacy their "follow the money" strategy. I hold a grudge against anyone who would prefer endless yammering about football, basketball and sometimes baseball to knowing WTF is going on or music for the occasional relief of sore psyches. You I do not understand.
A very good, balanced news station in a world where that has become lacking. First, print journalism and now this. Really sad that in the largest media market in the country, CBS won’t have a radio voice any longer.
They need to keep this station on the air and not retirement so what if New York City has two new stations on the radio they already have a sports radio station which is 660 AM as it is. I don’t think the owners of this station are very good and CBS should’ve done something about this and people need to protest this.
Whats crazy tho is that Audacy owns WFAN, WCBS, and WINS. Not only that but the reason this is happening is because ESPN wants to move its programming from 98.7 to 880. Which mean ESPN will be both on 880 and 1050 AM.
Absolutely devestating. Been listening to 880 sonce I was about 10 years old when the signal would come in at night up here in New Brunswick, Canada. Then with the internet I could listen all day. I feel like a familiar old friend has died.
Like the old say goes, good things has to come to an end, but the memory was still live on. Big congratulations to those people who work hard to provide information!❤
"Begin the day with a friendly voice, a companion unobtrusive." Morning routines since childhood will never be the same without CBS 880; hearing it made home feel like home. It always helped to have an alternative news station to flip over to for current traffic and weather reports when the other one took hours off for a ball game. What I have already missed for years is the comforting sound of the old pros, Christopher Glenn and Neil Busch.
its sad to see am radio die. i would listen to wcbs at night all the way up here in the canadian province of new brunswick. the signal was better than wins which has interference from cfrb but i guess ill have to listen to that now.
I'm 78 & well remember the start of WCBS 880 in 1967! Truthfully, growing up in the 1950's, when news was only broadcast 10 or 15 min.'s, a few times a day, I couldn't believe that anyone would want to hear it, ALL DAY! I guess I was wrong, but still believe this 24 hr. format is "OVERKILL" on both T.V. & radio stations! Will not miss it!
Why would CBS/Audacy/whoever switch 880 to sports when they have the FAN already? Wow, I've listened to WCBS since the early 80s and it was definitely the go-to traffic station while living in NYC area. They will certainly be missed, best of luck to all the staff. What a tough business.
WCBS out of NYC has a strong signal and wouldn't fade out whenever I tuned in commuting on I95 in Connecticut. I enjoyed the business news highlights with Joe Connolly, weather with Craig Allen. All of the crew and staff will be greatly missed! Thank You for a job well done!
I'm sad to see this. I grew up in NY and this station was always on in the car. By sheer dumb luck I'm going to be in the area that last weekend. Going to give them one more listen for sure.
In Pittsburgh, we lost our all-news station several years ago. Last I heard, there is no local news on the AM dial in Pittsburgh from Friday evening to Monday morning. I did listen WCBS on my car radio. I learned about the BQE, the LIE, the Goethals Bridge, etc, by listening to WCBS
I don't recall the date in summer of 1985, but I was able to hear the WCBS Newsradio 88's broadcast while driving on I-95 from Manhattan to Orlando. That day, the majority of the eastern seaboard was overcast. Mostly no rain throughout, just overcast. I had hoped the broadcast would reach my destination, however, I lost the signal immediately after passing the "Welcome to Florida" sign. I will miss you wonderful folks that made and grew the station in love.
An AM station in Hamilton, Ontario which is just west of Toronto was shut down last Wednesday after 97 years. 97 years! CHML 990 Hamilton. And they weren't given two weeks, instead people came to work in the morning and by noon the station was empty and the doors were locked. Unfuckingbelievable
I'm sorry to learn that. I used to occasionally listen to CHML AM in western Connecticut just to get a taste of what's happening in Canada nowadays. Its signal came in very clearly. Then sometimes I'd switch to WCBS AM. But my go-to station nowadays is WABC AM.
Even though I live in shoreline CT, I hae listened to NewsRaf=dio 880 for 46 years -- dating back to the late 70s in college. I admired the great ones -- Rita Sands, in particular. I belive they should have retired WINS and kept WCBS. I hope the staff find new jobs. They are the best! RIP News Radio 88
In Scotland, ach, lad, I r-r-remember back in '37, WCBS reported that New Jersey was still a state. Ach, thems wuz the good old daze. You're welcome.😅😅😅
Sad…I was a WINS..person “ you give us 22 minutes and we’ll give you the world!”…ticker, sound in the background…Ha ha..I would listen waking up for 1) weather 2) transit traffic 3) quick news recap…then I would put Howard Stern on…those days are long gone ..
I live near Toronto Canada and would regularly have the radio in the evening tuned to WCBS 880. WCBS 880 clear channel coverage was about half the continental US and half of Canada.
I could cry right now! I absolutely love this station..this is devastating to me. This iconic station is a fixture on my radio dial as my news service of choice. What a shame to lose our long time institutions to what...another sports station!?!? News formats today are nothing more than entertainment. CBS 880 offered Pure Unadulterated News! I pray someone can reverse this unbelievable decision. I mean what’s wrong with keeping this institution up and running as is? I’m sure others like me would appreciate CBS 880 remain operating and continue to provide the awesome service to the Tri-State area like they have been over their 57 years.
They accompanied me during part of my car ride from work. They were such an easy way to keep up with some of the news and weather. How sad that such simple, functional programming no longer has a place in the market.
This is a crying shame. I knew I could find out what was going on just by listening for 10 minutes, and knowing that the traffic was 8 mins after the hour and pretty inclusive and accurate sure helped my commutes. Whoever decided this was the best way to go should revisit this...but it's Audacy, and they don't care about history at all.
The METS Games will still be Broadcasted on 880AM for the remainder of the season. Which Ironically will have the YANKEES Supporting The Micheal Kay Show as their lead in.
I remember when I used to listen to the Yankee games on this station before they moved to WFAN 660. For some reason, I can still hear John Sterling's call of "Ballgame over! Yankees win! DAAAAAAAAAAAAA YANKEES WIN!" whenever I think of this station. WCBS 880 will be missed.
What will happen to the HD1 signal on 101.1 FM after 880 AM switches to ESPN Radio on August 26th? Will WCBS News Radio be on FM exclusively in the NYC area, or will it vanish altogether? And will WINS become the flagship station for the CBS News Radio Network once the format change is finalized?
Another memorable piece of American culture that will be missed. I only heard them occasionally here in Oregon but this station had a huge reach across the country. Let's do what we can to keep AM radio from dying altogether! It's easy to use, works in emergencies, can be a good companion, and many prefer not being glued to a TV or phone.
I grew up in New York listen to this radio station since I was 15 years old it’s so bad. I am going to miss it. Nobody cannot help with station to stay on air after 60 years. It’s not fair. I would like I wish you can stay here that’s where I get my News from, I’ll miss you guys
This is a blow to New York & the Tri State area .I've listened to this station on again off again since I was little. Why do this ? Sports i like sports to but come on not for 24 hours . Another station was lost to this due to all sports format WRKS 98.7 KISS FM to all sports.. All our 3 network radio stations are gone this is pointless we still need to be informed , My 2 favorite stations of News is WCBS News radio 88 & of course 10/ 10 WINS which is Broadcasted on FM Radio as well. You just can't cancel News out of communication, may i add Their FM station WCBS FM did something similar with music 🎶 known as The Oldies Station music played from the 1950's through 1970's they changed to JACK FM playing hard & soft Rock. It failed & CBS FM went back only to play 1970's into to 1990's format Rock Soul, country, & little hip hop etc. no complaints there. Now this isn't the way New York Newsradio 88 sad you are leaving us we need you as a native New Yorker feeling sad on this decision..😢
What gets me is that we learned of the death of one of THREE all-news AM stations in NYC. In Philadelphia, the AM all-news station took over an FM station and is simulcasting over it!
Apparently they are doing this because ESPN wants a stronger signal than what they have on 98.7 FM, whats wierd to me is how ESPN already has 1050 am. Well at least there's gonna be music on 98.7 again (Probably).
How can they do this? This is a public service necessity! Instant news without any delay -just turn on your radio. The NY area just won't be the same...

Wow, WCBS 880, the home of the Osgood File at:44 minutes past the hour every weekday morning, Car show, and 60 Minutes on WCBS 880.
Sports programming is dirt cheap. Maintaining a newsroom with reporters is expensive. And here we are.
@@WPM_in_ATL Leasing the station is even cheaper than running it. No staff at all.
@@grayrabbit2211 Yes, just a little bit of time form FCC compliance tasks.
@@WPM_in_ATL I mean WCBS 101.1 will probably still keep the WCBS calls.
Pat Mcafee and Steven A Smith are not cheap and are paid very handsomely for their work.
Correct, as for CBS-branded call signs Audacy would need to change them after 20 years of merger with Audacy/Entercom per CBS Trademarks Licence Agreement
It means, WCBS-FM, KCBS, and KCBS-FM will be replaced in the future.
Audacy ruined KDKA, the mother station of all commercial radio broadcasting
WINS is on FM 92.3 so that transmitter is in the city of New York, so you can’t say that. If you guys are complaining about 1010, go to FM 92.3 and start listening there.
@@joshdznyc I can't pick them up here. Also, FM has a much shorter range than AM, mainly because they use less transmitting power.
@@mmrproductions1 there’s also an option of streaming 1010 wins on your iPhone
We here in Pittsburgh lost our all news radio station (1410 KQV) several years ago, and I still miss it DAILY, Sad to see another one go. Some of us out here still listen to the radio, and would like to still have a station to pop on whenever we want to catch up on the news. Reading it on the phone is just not the same. Sad!
Don’t you still have KDKA, I can hear that station from Wisconsin at night.
I'm 60. WOW, this is really sad. First I heard of this.... Change, sometimes, is good, sometimes bad. My generation always tuned in to WCBS radio with their familiar "headline music or alert noise or whatever you call it" for decades. Ugh. Journalism these dsys sucks.❤
First legendary “ W-NNNNNN-BC” went completely off, & and now it took 30 years later for WCBS to reach the same fate. 😢
Will miss wcbs. 880. Best news station
RIP to WCBS News Radio 880 AM. : (

I enjoyed listening to WCBS 880 on my computer.
WCBS 880 was the heart and soul of the Big Apple.
We'll miss you and you're always and forever in our New York hearts
Rest In Peace NewsRadio 880. ❤️

Why??! I listened to it every morning driving to work… so sad..😥😥😥
@@UtilityCurveYeah i mean KGO in San Francisco went from Talk to Gambling Sports Radio
A very good, balanced news station in a world where that has become lacking. First, print journalism and now this. Really sad that in the largest media market in the country, CBS won’t have a radio voice any longer.
Well Im assuming CBS Radio will still be on WINS bc here in California KNX and KCBS still exist and have CBS Radio.
Iconic a big part of my life.
Like the old say goes, good things has to come to an end, but the memory was still live on.
Big congratulations to those people who work hard to provide information!❤

I would of liked if they went to a talk radio format now, instead of sports!
Great station - listened for many many years
Just what we need, more sports programming. As if there aren't 200 stations doing that.
So sad to see the end of NewsRadio 880. 😒
It's been part of my morning, midday and evening routines since it began broadcasting in 1967. 😢
Thank you Wcbs 880 for wonderful years of service 😢 and the many great memories ❤
I am sorry to hear this news. Been listening for decades. Take a well deserved bow NewsRadio 88 staff... you certainly deserve it. Ya did good!
Thank you for so many news stories.😢
Very sad news. As a DXer, I’m going to miss hearing this station.
Unbelievable. Will be missed.
Oh wow! I used to listen to the channel on my daily commute. Damn.
its sad to see am radio die. i would listen to wcbs at night all the way up here in the canadian province of new brunswick. the signal was better than wins which has interference from cfrb but i guess ill have to listen to that now.
So sad: people across the country loved listening to it, feeling at home in ny
The first voice (Steve Porter) was the perfect voice for radio. Rarely see that anymore.
I'm 78 & well remember the start of WCBS 880 in 1967! Truthfully, growing up in the
1950's, when news was only broadcast 10 or 15 min.'s, a few times a day, I couldn't
believe that anyone would want to hear it, ALL DAY! I guess I was wrong, but still
believe this 24 hr. format is "OVERKILL" on both T.V.
I listened to this every day - very sad to see this go
When growing up in ny l use to hear both this and wins news a lot sad to see them go
This is so silly! New York City needs WABC, WNBC, and WCBS!
Kdka the first
I don't recall the date in summer of 1985, but I was able to hear the WCBS Newsradio 88's broadcast while driving on I-95 from Manhattan to Orlando.
880 AM News radio 88 was my go to for news, weather and traffic. I am very disappointed to find the station no longer available.
One of the saddest things an old man has ever heard. I would wait for the 4 notes, followed by Daa Daa Daa, DaDaDaaaaa
Oh no!! What a shame. It will be missed
That’s 900 AM.
CHML 900 AM also on 95.3 HD3
WDCX 990 AM in Rochester, NY
I remember picking up WCBS 88 in Central Ohio years ago.
My mom, my dad, my uncle always listened to WCBS 880 every morning.
THANKS for the news. Sorry to see you go.
The METS Games will still be Broadcasted on 880AM for the remainder of the season. Which Ironically will have the YANKEES Supporting The Micheal Kay Show as their lead in.
I wish there still is 98 Rock in Honolulu, Hawaii.
WCBS AM had been a preset station on mycar radio for almost 50 years. This is Asad time for all New Yorkers
101.1 will remain its current classic hits format. 98.7 is the station that is flipping to a new format once 880 takes on 98.7's format.
I remember WPLJ had great shows on the weekend.
I used to listened to WPLJ when I get ready for work in the morning. When they went away, I switched to WCBS. And now they are going away too!!😢

Another memorable piece of American culture that will be missed. I only heard them occasionally here in Oregon but this station had a huge reach across the country. Radio media companies are among the most soulless corporations that exist
What gets me is that we learned of the death of one of THREE all-news AM stations in NYC. In Philadelphia, the AM all-news station took over an FM station and is simulcasting over it!
Boo. Not happy about this. Do we really need another sports station? Bad move! 👎👎
No, we don't.
Apparently they are doing this because ESPN wants a stronger signal than what they have on 98.7 FM, whats wierd to me is how ESPN already has 1050 am. Well at least there's gonna be music on 98.7 again (Probably).
How can they do this? This is a public service necessity!
