  • Join me as I create a civil war era 'working women's' petticoat. I go over how to do a flat fell seem, a whip stitch and just a plain how I made the whole thing! I hope you learn something new and get inspired from my first tutorial!

      They are handy (and a lot cheaper) I was amazed how much fabric goes into a petticoat.
      Thank you!!!, I was glad that the vertical stripes of the skirt didn't clash with the horizontal stripes of the ruffle!

    So great to have found you! I've been interested in historical sewing for over a year now, but although the usual channels in the area are quite great regarding the sewing, I clearly have a preference when I find a fellow Christian, because I think the love for our Lord unites us in a different manner...I hope your channel will grow, because you clearly deserve it (sorry for any language mistake, I'm swiss). God bless you!

    The criss-cross for the too-large waistband won't work. The ties will hold firm but the waistband and petticoat will slip under. Could I suggest just a little elastic added to the back of the waistband? You would need to open it to put the elastic in, but you would not need to redo the gathering. I would suggest measuring how much 1-inch non-roll elastic you would need to attach across the back from side seam to side seam. This would give it enough fit to hold it in place, although if you want it to sit securely at your waist as a petticoat with a skirt over it, you will need to redo the gathers. You've done a beautiful job, and we all get even better with practice.

    I just stumbled upon your channel! I too am a girl of a different era. Your style is so beautiful and quaint, I think clothes from the 1800s are absolutely amazing! I believe my soul belongs in the 1950s, so I've been trying to make clothes from that era. ❤️

    Or another suggestion: Take off the ties, open the ends of the waistband, and insert ties through the entire waistband that you tie securely each time you put the petticoat on. That makes it secure at the waist under a skirt. Also, I think that might be how petticoats were made and worn for centuries, enabling women to wear the same clothes regardless of monthly weight change and pregnancy.

    This is very nice! I learned several things I'd been wanting to learn. I don't like modern styles (too uncomfortably tight and immodest) and fast fashion (all the reasons), so I tend to wear long skirts or below-the-knee skirts over leggings. For most of human history, women have worn long skirts -- they're practical, graceful, and modest.
    One word about the music: It's nice music (good choice!) but the volume of the music is just a little high compared to the volume for your speaking, and sometimes I couldn't hear what you were saying become of the music volume. Perhaps switch that around. Just a suggestion ...

    How can you iron on that wooden table? Is it stained? Is it just impervious to heat somehow? It seems to be a splendid solution.

    • @girlofdifferentera2922
      @girlofdifferentera2922  2 года назад +2

      Well, I did that since at the time I didn't have an ironing board, if you put a towel on top it protects the table but, most of the time I just used it bare, if you don't let the iron stay in one place long it seems perfectly fine!

    I like your attitude! You seem like a sweet person to be around.
    Why do you steam iron on a wood surface? Won't that harm the wood over time?

      Thank you! Yes it probably would, I just didn't have an ironing board at the time.
