Nice timing, as I just fired up the Xbox version of Heroes last night, in order to get a save file to use on Mega Collection Plus! I enjoyed all of the Sonic games on GameCube, even if many of them were rough around the edges. Kind of surprised that you liked Riders as much as you did... not saying it's a bad game, but the stiff controls and unconventional game mechanics make for a weird learning curve, and I find that it (like pretty much all of Sonic's games from that time) gets a lot better once everything clicks.
I’ve been a real quiet fan of this channel for about a year now, just want to say I appreciate the work you do on here. Sonic 2 on the genesis is the earliest game I can remember playing and means a lot to me; it was nice to see some games I hadn’t heard of before. Cheers
Great video. The use of 3D Blast Saturn music when talking about Mega Collection was a nice touch. I've got a soft spot for Heroes since it was one of my first, but the special stages def hold it back for me. My copy of riders also has the same cutscene issues. I assumed it was just the disk acting up. The graphical glitches also didn't happen when I popped the game into my 360, which usually the opposite problem happens.
GameCube was definitely the place for Sonic games during this time period. Very glad Xbox kids at least got Mega Collection though. It's the best classic Sonic compilation to this day. And Sonic 3 & K is still the goat. Sonic Heroes was okay, but a huge step down from SA2. And Shadow is where I dropped off the series for a few years. Didn't play Riders until many years later and it's pretty fun, but no Sonic R.
I consider Shadow the Hedgehog to be a guilty pleasure, it has a lot against it, but I can't bring myself to hate it. Loved Sonic Heroes too, and at least Sonic Riders was the best Sonic game to come out in 2006, given what others did.
@@daddykarlmarx6183 From what I could find, the GameCube port is the definitive console version of the game. The worst aspect of the XBOX port is its inconsistent framerate, while running at 60FPS, sometimes it drops to 30FPS. The GameCube port maintained a consistent 60FPS. The PlayStation 2 is the weakest port, one of its biggest problems being its longer load times among other factors. But that's based on what I found.
@@Breeze06 Oh sorry, I saw Sonic Heroes on the C tier and assumed it was held in lower regard on the console (but not lowest) But on the XBOX version, the only issue I recall with it was inconsistent framerates, the GameCube version maintained a consistent 60FPS
Sonic Heroes was actually my first introduction to the Sonic franchise in general. When I was a kid, I did not know about Sonic at all, till I went to my ex friend's house and showed me and my best friend the opening cinematic of Sonic Heroes (the one that shows all the teams and Neo Metal Sonic's silouette), and from there I knew about Sonic Heroes but didn't play or buy the game till I was 10 years old and was in a Target with my grandma, and I saw Sonic Heroes for the GameCube and asked her to buy it for me, which she did, and since then I started playing it and have since beaten it several times. Definitely my favorite Sonic game of all time. Also, something to mention about Sonic Heroes is that the GameCube version is the best version of the game, with the most polish and effort put into it, with Xbox being close second, and PS2 being the worst version. So some of the bugs and glitches you encountered are likely not present in the GameCube version (plus that version being more polished means less glitchy jank in the mix).
Nice to see another loving Sonic Riders, always felt it was an underrated games. I enjoyed Sonic Heroes and Shadow too, but Sonic Riders was great. Albeit I played the Sonic games on my GameCube, my brother had Xbox and I did play it too (glad I found this channel, I have memories playing his Xbox).
Hey dude, I’d love it if you’d review the Beowulf game on 360 and get your thoughts on it. It got panned on release but I feel it’s heavily underrated. Thanks
Looking at the four Sonic games… I can understand where you’re coming from. 1. Sonic Heroes: So this one…I only played Seaside Hill where I was much younger and I never played all the way through because I didn’t personally own the game. The most I’ve heard for those defending the game is that at least it was playable. Flawed but certainly playable with some pretty neat idea. I did…if I did play it solely as its own Sonic game and not the next entry set out by Sonic Adventure 2…it could be an okay time, though I’m not sure if there’s was a ton of bugs I’ve heard in general…so that was a surprise for me. 2. Sonic Mega Collection Plus: I’ve remembered looking at the intro attraction to Sonic Gems Collection and being mesmerized by the music and presentation. I really wish I’ve owned both of these collection and to me…both Sonic Collections are to me how you should release a compilation while demonstrating and celebrating the history of Sonic and Sega! I wish Sega put more effort into there later collection with Sonic Origins more recently since there was some weird emulation issues. 3. Shadow the Hedgheg: Okay, so this one I’ve never fully played and I don’t know if I will…I know the reputation for this one is pretty well known as the edgiest character that like to say “Damn” every time and that one was funny at least. I did wish the level design was much better along with the camera control especially if Shadow goes really fast. It sucks because the idea of branching pathway for Sonic sounded really good on paper. Oh well, at least music and graphics were par for the course for Sega… 4. Sonic Riders: Truth to be told, I’ve never played this one either…but I did play its sequel Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity which kind of hold a pretty soft side…since it’s the only major Sonic spinoff I’ve played alongside with the Olympics titles. I do love the bold stylish cell shading animation and the two Sega courses. The gimmicks were also pretty cool…and I wish there were expanded upon instead of being removed for the casual experience. It’s a bummer Free Riders on the Kinect killed the Sonic Riders because of the negative reception of having to use your whole body to move. At least the No patch version exist now. I think this series have a lot of potential and it would be really cool to have something like a Mario Kart collaboration fusion! Sign me up! PS. Make sure to check the tutorial in the Menu since Sega wanted to give a hardcore experience to players for Sonic Riders. So yeah…my thoughts on the title. I did want to note that the DX version of Sonic Adventure exclusive on GameCube wasn’t exactly the definitive version as I’ve heard, so I’m not sure what’s your opinion of it.
The Xbox 360 was already out by then, so Riders was in that weird cross-gen period (even if it never got a next-gen port). There was also a sequel called Zero Gravity, which came out around 2008 for Wii and PS2, so maybe that's throwing things off a little?
The price of Shadow is like $200 aud in Australia now used. possibly more but this is the first list I have seen it on giving it reps considering its price point now.
Real talk though, i love emulating the genesis on my Xbox, the sonic mega collection is when i realized the xbox had the best genesis controller, with the squishy shield dpad and and 6 face buttons
I think Shadow gets better the more you play it. You get a feel for how the levels work and how to use the slippery controls to your advantage. My main strike against it is you need to beat the game _10 times_ with *10 unique story paths* to access the real ending, which is far too much. Granted, each playthrough is actually quite short, but each story path is going to reuse levels at some point.
I agree, but you pretty much just summed up all of Sonic's games from 1998-2008... or maybe just all of them, period! I've seen it described as the "Sega learning curve". Even Sonic Adventure, which became one of my favourite games of all time, was frustrating on the first attempt. But Sega does give you the tools to succeed at- or more likely break- the game, if you learn the mechanics and the levels!
I have Sonic Heroes on the Gamecube, it’s not the best 3D Sonic game but it’s decent, it plays well. Sonic Mega Collection, both Original and Plus versions are great, the emulation is accurate and the songs that plays in the Menus give some sort of nostalgia to me. Sonic Riders is actually pretty good, the first time i played on the Gamecube i thought it was just a cheap copy of Mario Kart, days later i gave it a second try and really liked it. Shadow the Hedgehog is one of the worst Sonic games i’ve ever played, the controls are awful, the level design is not good at all, and the story mode is short.
The only one of these I have is Sonic Heroes. I didn't care for it but maybe my nephew would like it. I was too old when I got it I guess. My Sonic game was Sonic The Hedgehog on Game Gear when I was like 7.
Hard disagree that the controls of Sonic Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog are bad. I will admit the grinding controls in Sonic Heroes were a bit finicky but they actually improved on them in Shadow the Hedgehog. But other than that I had no fucking problem with the controls in either game.
This is absolutely NOT true. This is coming from a fan of both Heroes AND Shadow the Hedgehog. The controls are indeed bad. Like, VERY bad, especially in Heroes. They were improved in Shadow, luckily. But in Heroes? The player needs to adjust to how bad and finicky they are, to the point of not using the speed characters altogether (because they zip out of control and fall in a pit) until they learn. The control are 100% a total downgrade from both of the Adventure games' controls. We can simply admit that even if we are fans of Heroes.
Completely agree on Shadow’s issues and positives, always been one I’ve liked despite its problems. Hilariously I originally really really liked it because I had rented it and True Crime NYC the same day. True Crime was so busted and bad that it made Shadow seem like a masterpiece by comparison.
Hello good vidéo 👍 I can understand that the game Shadow is not as convincing but there are different reasons for that. First the American translation is catastrophic, in Japanese there is no "Damn" all the time or cringe lines and some elements of the scenario are better explained. And for the gameplay I notice that often few people really understand its mechanics because it is poorly explained. For example there is a straf by pressing one of the triggers which will allow you to make more precise attacks, you should also know that the homing attack has a slightly longer recharge time each time you use it which forces you to use weapons instead of spamming like in heroes. There are also ways to lose less speed but if you want to see all that I recommend a short fun video that offers you a good tutorial hoping that you can appreciate it a little more 😊 ruclips.net/video/-rTOnVblPNo/видео.htmlsi=OflDQtlscLyz6aQl And yes Riders is so cool its one of my favorite Sonic Game ♥️ Ps:For Shadow something lot of people dont pay attention its dialogues of the character missions, you can miss some path or ennemies if you dont listen their dialogues
I love the first level in Sonic Adventure and in Sonic Adventure 2, however I think those games kinda suck after that. Sonic's speed hasn't done him any favors in the 3D era
Seems you havent really played them then. You're missing out. I suggest going back and giving them another try. Plenty of levels offer great high speed design. By no means perfect but theyre better than you remember. If you do, just apply some fan patches if its the steam version that restores the controls and fixes bugs (the SADX/Battle versions of the game were busted, not offering the best experience)
