Kevin, here’s why some people still want a different anthem. “1974. A national referendum was held to decide Australia's National Anthem. Australians chose between 'God Save The Queen', 'Advance Australia Fair', 'Song of Australia' and 'Waltzing Matilda'. 'Advance Australia Fair' received the most votes and replaced the previous national anthem, 'God Save The Queen'.” Those who voted differently still want their choice but we already decided. The world recognises our national anthem from every Commonwealth Games and every Olympics, and the lyrics are better suited to national pride and loyalty.
Yeah nah. It has no soul, and so many people do not connect with it. When we become a republic we'll replace it, hopefully with a modified version of I Am Australian.
@@Bellas1717 Do you not swell with pride at the medal ceremonies when Aussies who won, stand with hand on heart and feel united to Australians everywhere?
@ I do, but the anthem has nothing to do with it. I get more emotion from the anthems of Ireland, New Zealand and South Africa than the pedestrian Australian one. Girt by sea, seriously? I have watched thousands of school children across decades as we sing this song at assemblies, and there is just no connection. It is also difficult to actually sing. I teach 'I Am Australian', and the difference in their response is stark. IAA is also far more meaningful and easier to understand for 'those who've come across the seas'.

Many of are not overly keen on our national Anthem. There was a vote in 1977 over what would be the anthem. The choices being "God Save the Queen", "Advance Australia Fair", "Song of Australia" or "Waltzing Matilda". As much as we love WM we didn't think it was anthem material. AAF got 43.29% of the vote simply because it was the best pick out of a poor bunch.

Had a bit of a chuckle, these are mostly things only Australians would know, or who has visited, but Phil Collins is from the UK. I'm surprised no one's suggest you listen to John Farnham and Jimmy Barnes duets. When Something Is Wrong with My Baby is probably their most notable. Oh, and I'm one of those that are just left feeling a bit empty, I'm just glad they didn't sing all 4 verses, but no one knows them. In 1988, or bicentenary, I traveled with the Army around Australia and performed in a military tattoo and we sang the National Anthem multiple times a day for 5 months. But in that time we also learned the National Anthems of the UK, Canada, NZ and USA. Of all of those, Australia's was the worst, it just left me feeling flat, but back then the anthem had only been official for 4 years and there just weren't any good arrangements around, it was just bland. NZ's is beautiful and is sung in English and Māori, and if you know the story behind the USA's national anthem then it makes it very patriotic. It's interesting how Advance Australia Fair was actually chosen, there was a poll in 1977 of which 4 songs were selected, Advance Australia Fair got 44%, Waltzing Mathilda got 28%, Song of Australia got 10% and God Save the King/Queen got 18%. Advance Australia Fair was first performed in 1878 with the same melody we use now and was just a patriotic song. It's interesting that Waltzing Matilda was on the list, if you know the lyrics, it's about a man that kills himself after being caught stealing a sheep. As much as I love the song, it's hardly national anthem worthy, haha. We are Australian, sung by The Seekers is a contender in my mind, and if you haven't reacted then give it a go, it is beautiful.
I agree with everything you’ve said. I Am Australian isn’t an anthem in its current form but could so easily be adapted to become one. It has soul, people connect with it, and it has a positive, healing message. Cheers.
'Advance Australia Fair' is an adequate Anthem. 'We are Australian' would be much better. Personally I would not like 'Waltzing Matilda' as it's really about an itinerant person who steals a sheep and when caught, commits suicide!

The Australian singer question is a trick question. The answer is Phil Collins. Of the four options Kylie Minogue is the only Australian-born artist. Both John Farnham and Jimmy Barnes were born in the UK but we have claimed them as our own.
In an Aussie made movie Kenny the character Kenny said he thought the first line of Australia's national anthem was "Australians all let us ring Joyce for she is young and free".

Such a BBQ is called a "sausage sizzle", though some weirdos in certain states call the sausage sandwich a "sausage sizzle". 😉 All are successful singers, but Phil Collins is not Australian.

Love you checking out the National anthem to learn more ♥ Thats an old version of the national anthem as it was updated in 2021. The line 'We are Young and free', was referencing only 200 years of European colonisation - hence Young. Its now 'We are One and Free' - recognising the Australian Indigenous community who are the oldest community on the planet (40,000+ years) therefore we are definetly not young, but that instead Australian is a mixture of so many cultures; we are One
In regards to our National Anthem only the first verse is sung. When we were at school we would have Assembly on a Tuesday morning and we would sing both verses. But the verse starting with ‘Beneath our radiant Southern Cross’ is not sung. Nor are the other 4 verses that were in the original song. Advance Australia Fair was originally written as a hymn. If you can find it check out the album ‘Anthem: Celebration of Australia’ from 1997. The album has tracks all Advance Australia Fair sung by the likes of John Farnham to Lee Kernaghan with Gina Jeffries and Troy Cassar-Daley to James Morrison, The Seekers and The Wiggles.
Number 7 is a trick question. It would heavily depend on where the Ute is at. Is it: A) A B&S Ball B) Summernats C) A Christmas parade D) Legally registered
I'm an Aussie, and I got all those questions correct, except the one regarding the national anthem. I can't remember the last time I heard the national anthem. It was a long time ago. At least 20 years.

It seems to be a "thing" to dis the anthem. It's as good as any other, better than some. Also, Phil Collins is British. You really need to listen to John Farnham and Jimmy Barnes.
The current Australian National Anthem was only introduced in 1984. Prior to this is was God Save the Queen. Every school teaches kids the new anthem, so for all kids who went to school prior to 1984 they never learnt the latest version. Most people who say Waltzing Matilda should be our anthem are those who went to school pre-1984.
Actually it was first adopted 10 years earlier by the Whitlam government but then rolled back by Fraser and that ratbag Kerr before Bob Hawke re-instated it in '84. I remember learning both this and 'God Save The Queen' in primary school in the early-mid 70s but only AAF was played at my high school, at leastt in my senior years in the early 80' (I graduated in '82) by which time there was a big push to bring it back. And if I remember correctly, it was used as the national anthem at the 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games for medal ceremonies.
Phil Collins is not Australian all the others are. Yes, Blundstone's (not Bluntstones, by the way) are also Australian - Tasmanian, to be exact. Phil Collins was incorrect not because he is not a best selling singer, but because he is not Australian; he is English. Jimmy Barnes is the lead singer of Cold Chisel. I think you did ok. I don't hate the anthem, I just think it is a bit boring. Other anthems are more stirring. I think the tune of Waltzing Matilda is more catchy. Would need different words of course.
I love our anthem and what it says. It’s better than the Americans with their rockets red glare (in the middle of a battle) and better than the French ‘to arms…march on…until the enemy’s blood soaks our land’. Yikes.
That’s how you eat it at Bunnings. The (unbuttered) bread lets you hold the sausage without burning your fingers and thus dropping the thing. It also provides something for the sauce to soak into and not drip and is a receptacle for the sautéed onions - an essential ingredient. Some people also add mustard. Not for me.
To be fair not many outsiders would know the answers to those questions. But I would say Americans are held back from anything not to do with America, on the other hand we get so much of it we could probably answer 75% of questions in the same manner reversed.

Is Advance Australia Fair to the tune of Working Class Man. ruclips.net/video/eobSMcB-nMA/видео.html. waltzing matilda should NEVER be considered as our national anthem. Most probably less than fifty percent of Australians really know all the right words to the first verse of our anthem, and much less would know the second verse well enough to sing without a cheatsheet. As for the third verse and the couple following that, well very few Australians would know that or maybe even know that these verses actually exist. It might even be considered unAustralian to actually know the verses well enough to sing them without a chearsheet. It is not so much that the song is bad, it is definitely not great, but that there are quite a few songs that would have been much better choices. Also, the public was given limited choices when it was voted on in a referendum and the one chosen was just the best of a really bad and mostly miserably uninteresting bunch when the decision was made to replace "God Save The Queen" with a more appropriate Australian national anthem.
the seekers song "we are australian" should be the Australian national anthem - the current one is not all inclusive and rely on and promote the British aspect of Australia while denying the indigenous Australians existence and changing one word doesn't do it

Some useless trivia for you. Phil Collins has more of a connection with Canada than Australia. I think his first wife was Canadian. I met his son in the 90s when they lived on Salt Spring Island.
Walzing Matilda should not be our national anthem. It s a great national song but it is about an itinerant worker moving through country. He stops to steal a sheep and to avoid arrest he commits suicide by throwing himself into a billabong and drowning.
There’s nothing wrong with the Anthem, Australia has to come to terms with the whole ‘Cultural Cringe’ thing. I think we’re getting better with it, but it’s still there, witness the ridiculous ‘Raygun’ pile on most of us joined in on, totally throwing our Compatriot under the Bus. All just for a misjudged Dance routine, bloody shameful.
Kevin, Kevin, Kevin, Phil Collins is NOT Australian, he's English. Bunnings is a massive hardware and homewares chain of warehouses. You should do a week of Jimmy Barnes and John Farnham reaction starting with their duet when something is wrong with my baby
@@christophergrieshaber4204 I think so too!
When I was in primary school we sang god save the queen.
You got the number of Prime Minsters correct at 2. Gillard and the big girl KRUDD.
The seekers - I am Australian should be our national anthem
Number 7 is a trick question. It would heavily depend on where the Ute is at. Is it:
A) A B&S Ball
B) Summernats
C) A Christmas parade
D) Legally registered
I'm an Aussie, and I got all those questions correct, except the one regarding the national anthem. I can't remember the last time I heard the national anthem. It was a long time ago. At least 20 years.
You clearly don't watch any Sportsball; it's ubiquitous in Sports.
@@Mirrorgirl492 Well the music got a good workout at the Olympics but they don't use the words. You have to watch them being butchered at the NRL or AFL Grand Finals. The best place to hear it is the ANZAC Day football matches.
Bunnings is a hardware store formerly known as BBC Hardware House
No Bunnings bought BBC hardware. They weren't BBC hardware.
The answer to the RM Williams question could be all of them. I wear RM Williams sun glasses, boots, jeans and baseball cap, 😊
@Dr_KAP I apologise!😄
Being Australia, with Australians in general being all too ready to have punt, and the traditional game of 2-up being the fairest betting game of all, only two or three pennies and the kip, needed the game could well be played somewhere in Australia every day of the year. But it can only legally be played on Anzac day in designated places where people are gathered specifically to remember and commerate the sacrifice the fallen from wars and armed conflicts that Australia has fought in.
By the way mate your not dumb

Australia's "unofficial national anthem" isn't Waltzing Matilda, it's Khe Sanh by Cold Chisel.
Blundsone boots are made in Tasmania, Australia.
I am one Aussie who likes our anthem. I am older, being born in 1960, but wasn’t old enough to get a vote on it. And under normal circumstances they only play the first verse.
lol Good job 😂❤
Blunnies are indeed Australian, originating from down here in Tassie.
If you are interested in Australian docu’s, check out the ‘bushtucker man’, well worth it inspire of some very Australian vernacular.
yeah, nah. But Australians all let us rejoice for this was a fair quiz. Good onya for trying anyway.
Good job, I a Australian by the seeker's should be the anthem, Advance Australia Fair is just old lol
Lmao. You played the banned version of the anthem. They changed young to one to recognise first nations peoples
@@seanclark8494 oops 😬
It's not 'banned' it has been updated.
It used to be Australia sons too which was changed to Australians all.
It seems to be a "thing" to dis the anthem. It's as good as any other, better than some. Also, Phil Collins is British. You really need to listen to John Farnham and Jimmy Barnes.

Waltzing Mathilda a song about a theif and then commits suicide to avoid capture. Definitely do not want it as national anthem
Sausage Sizzle is sold on the weekends out the front of bunnings because they raising money for different charities and pepole always go to bunnings on the weekend. I have a friend called Joyce - I have been known to sing for the anthem ' Australians all let us ring joyce'
The boots are known as riding boots i had them
The question about R.M. Williams is a bit misleading. They actually make a variety of things, not just boots. Hats being one of them.

Why is America and Canada so isolated from the rest of the world when it comes to knowledge
Also it was mainly myself complaining about the anthem cause there were better options.
Many Australians think this should be our anthem - 'We Are Australian' by The Seekers - ruclips.net/video/KrLTe1_9zso/видео.html
Many people don't like our national anthem. Many would prefer "We are one, but we are many" or "I still call Australia home"
I love our anthem and what it says. It’s better than the Americans with their rockets red glare (in the middle of a battle) and better than the French ‘to arms…march on…until the enemy’s blood soaks our land’. Yikes.
what was a sandwich with the saussage
That’s how you eat it at Bunnings. The (unbuttered) bread lets you hold the sausage without burning your fingers and thus dropping the thing. It also provides something for the sauce to soak into and not drip and is a receptacle for the sautéed onions - an essential ingredient. Some people also add mustard. Not for me.
@@DeepThought9999 sorry i was meant to say explaining our dumb canadian friend lol yes that was a sandwich spelling error
Wish people would stop referring to the sausage sizzle as a hotdog. They are similar, sure but also very different
Just do yourself a favour and get to know Jimmy Barnes... An Australian national treasure.
By the way no one knows the second verse.
To be fair not many outsiders would know the answers to those questions. But I would say Americans are held back from anything not to do with America, on the other hand we get so much of it we could probably answer 75% of questions in the same manner reversed.
here's 2 links. #1 is Jimmy Barnes' Working Class Man. ruclips.net/video/erSJGrpfnOI/видео.html #2. Is Advance Australia Fair to the tune of Working Class Man. ruclips.net/video/eobSMcB-nMA/видео.html. waltzing matilda should NEVER be considered as our national anthem. While I like th parody in #2 the song that NEEDS to be the Australian national Anthem is "I Still Call Australia Home". See 2 links #1 thE original version by Peter Allen (with lyrics) - ruclips.net/video/-IBJ2KKeOrY/видео.html and teh version used by QANTAS Australia's national airline - ruclips.net/video/-niyYHexMTo/видео.html That pulls at the heart strings which is why it should be the aussie anthem.
By the way, We don't have fairs.
Phil Collins *IS NOT* australian singer he is british
You dont know who Jimmy Barnes is this is where you need to do your research he was part of a 1970's and 80's band called cold Chisel

We will miss the Newfield when they are anexed by Trump.

There’s nothing wrong with the Anthem, Australia has to come to terms with the whole ‘Cultural Cringe’ thing. Kevin, Kevin, Kevin, Phil Collins is NOT Australian, he's English. Bunnings is a massive hardware and homewares chain of warehouses. Every weekend charity people set up the sausage sizzle at each of their warehouses with the money going to charity.
A funny true story is that a guy sent a drone to Bunnings with a note and money for a sausage in bread. The staff attached the sausage on the drone and the guy got his sausage. Sadly for the poor guy, the air traffic people find him for invading airspace. True story. 😊🦘🇦🇺
