Set in New York at the height of the Aids epidemic, it's the true story of Jonathan Larsen whose musical Rent revolutionised musical theatre.
The theme of "running out of time" was especially acute for Garfield after his mother passed away just before filming began.
Garfield has received an Oscar nomination in the Best Actor category for his role in the movie.
He spoke to Jackie Long about art, the challenges of fame and the pain of grief.

Bless his mother and father for raising such a polite, empathetic and beautiful man.
Beautiful indeed 😻
Fr, so much empathy is that sweet man.💕
His mother seems like a lovely woman who raised a special son. She’s right: kindness is the most important trait you can have.
"I hope it never makes sense, because I always want to miss her" that is so deep man... bless Andrew and RIP his mom
When I hear Andrew talk about losing his mother it makes me feel sad for him. I lost my dad when I was 25, almost 16 years ago. I remember that day. I was in college, nursing school. I felt an overwhelming sense of lostness and just not knowing what or how to do anything. As soon as I got home (I was living with my mom at the time), I just dropped everything and put my arms around her and I remember telling her she better not leave me too. You never get too old to need and love your parents. Time may soften the pain, but you never forget them. That's how they live on is through us and our memories of them. I wish I could give Andrew a hug; him and anyone else who feels this loss. You're not alone even when you feel like you are.
This made me tear up. Sending so much love to you! ❤️
Man, I am so sorry to hear about you and I am glad your mom is alive.
My condolences
This was so beautiful that you shared. Thank you for sharing and I’m so sorry for your loss.
My dad died when I was 3 years old, I realized it when I was 5 cause my parents where split. My mum died when I was 22 due to cancer. I was with her all the time. I cleaned her and sat with her in her room in the hospital until her parents came for some hours.
My thoughts where the same as yours. I just wanted to hug him cause I know exactly how it feels.
He honors his Mother so beautifully and she raised an amazing man.
Bro , he’s just perfect . Ik he wouldn’t accept this kind of compliment but bro really knows how to treat a PERSON
I love the way he said that she was more proud of his kindness in everyday life than his achievements. She's got her life priorities right.
love him and his soul so much, hope he wins that oscar he deserves it sm
The way I can just listen to this man talk for hours because he thinks and speaks so deeply about everything. It’s Fascinating, he has a beautiful, interesting soul and mind.
This is one of the most beautiful interview clips he’s done yet. Thank you for asking him these questions and making him feel comfortable enough to share these words with us.
I was lucky enough to catch it live on TV yesterday. He had tears in his eyes as he spoke, and I was damn near close to crying myself. I know who he is, but I've never been a fan until that moment. This man is incredible. Be still my beating heart.
@@nightstorm16 You should definitely watch his interview on Colbert last year and really most of the interviews he’s done for tick tick Boom. He is one of a kind.
@@nightstorm16 Anyone know if the full version is available?
What an incredible interview. Thank you. Having lost my Mother over a decade ago and able to hear the experience of someone like Andrew Garfield is so touching and true. Reduced to tears. The honesty is truly moving and intense. Thank you.
A beautiful interview... Andrew has a pure soul. 🤍
it's not just the fact that i adore this man and everything he does, it's the fact that i respect him so much, he always amazes me with the way he talks and express his feelings, oh the world is so lucky to have him
I didn’t think I’d be tearing up at an interview but here we are!
This man! His mom, wherever she is, is certainly ridiculously proud of him and rightfully so! 💜
Unfortunately she passed away, but she surely looks down on him and is proud ❤️🕊
That fact that he can even talk about it with out crying, shows tremendous strength. Love this guy
His late mother, Lynn, was such a lovely person. She and her husband raised such wonderful sons: Andrew and his older brother, Benjamin, who is a lung doctor.
I pray all the best things to the Garfield family ❤️
He is such a beautiful person!! His mother would be so proud. Makes me think about grief in a wholly different light, a way to keep us going and connected to the person we have lost 😢❤
Andrew's mother raised a wonderful gentleman. This is a heartwarming interview.
Okay but at 15 this movie has opened my eyes to my life. I go for walks at sunset watching the day turn to night, try to stay close to friends and family and im trying to write music. im trying to live my life to the fullest this movie opened my eyes. I only have one life and now I can see this, thank you andrew for bringing your incredible songs and movie. ❤
Keep up those great habits and keep the good people close to you. You've got so much time to do what you want x
@@Billcornfield thank you, I just don't think ppl my age realise how great life is at this age and stress out abt things that won't matter in 5 yrs
How do you KNOW you only have ONE life? Is death the end, how do you know for sure it is?
I am convinced otherwise!
this is so sweet !! hold onto that feeling forever love, every minute is precious ♥︎
@@zabdas83 i believe that as well i meant we only have one life we remember so u should live every second like there's no tmrw
He genuinely loves talking about his mother so much... and his love for her shines so brightly every time he does ❤ It's so obvious where Andrew gets his kind & humble nature from 💞
He comes across as such a thoughtful person. I’ve seen several interviews and always blown away by how he articulates the love for his mother and the profound impact she has had on his life. He also a fantastic actor.
my dad died 3 years ago, when I was 15. Listening to him talk about loss, I understand it very deeply. it breaks my heart every day and the grief never leaves, it becomes part of you and it takes so much time to try to balance out everything. he's right, you think you are the only one who has lost their parent. Anyways, I'm saying this from the pov of a teenager and he's talking as a 38-year-old man. it's just beautiful how loss affects everyone in very different and yet same way.
Lost my Mother yesterday. Everything this man says resonates with me so deeply. So glad I found this. He is A Top Bloke, RIP Mum.
My sincerest condolences to you, @DirtyTrader so sorry about the loss of your beloved mom.🥺🥀🥺 I’m grieving and mourning my adopted mom it’s so hard the second year in a half without her and my biological father. 😥💔😢 I can sort of relate to how Andrew describes his mother molding and raising him right. My phenomenal adopted mom was the same all that I mostly am is because, of her. Which is also why her passing and absence hurts so deeply. 💔😰💔 She will always be the mom, I never had… #GriefHurts #Parentless
He's a gorgeous soul and it hurts to see him so sad but in a way it gives me a friend in this manner because I lost my mom around a similar time and I miss her as well. I only wish for him all the best. Absolutely precious
Gawd love how genuine he is! his ways through words is just >>>>>>>
Huge fan of him, he's awesome.
i've heard him talk about these topics before, but something about this interview brought fresh tears to my eyes,,
This is Andrew's time. He's doing amazing and he deserves all the praise and success.
He comes across as a lovely lad. And he does speak very beautifully about her and the emotion coming through in playing the role. Over a decade later and he looks like it's been a day. His answers and self deprecating style-is so very British and stoic lol.
Such a nice interview and I never get tired of listening to Andrew because he's such a sweet man. Need more people like him in my life.
Gosh he’s such a genuine, lovely guy. Great interview! ❤️ Your 5 kids must be proud ☺️
he’s so polite, down to Earth, kind and delicate. he’s so much like his mother 🩷
Just wish to say, I just love this man. Biggest fan.
Lovely way to spend my time today with this introspective interview.
What a lovely man!
Never heard of him before but he seems like a decent, grounded person
Maturity is when you realize this Guy lost Aunt May & Gwen in Real Life.....& The suffering continues when he's alone
This man Rules 2021 with his acting, Charisma & Natural Warmth
#LoveYouAndrew & May you always Stay Happy❤️❤️
What a beautiful interview . . . I can only hope to be as open and loving as him someday
what a lovely interview and what a lovely man. thank you ❤️
What a lovely, wonderful man he is!
Andrew's parents raised a great sincere human being and above all with a beautiful heart, I know that Andrew's mother is proud of the great man he is and I would love to tell him that I hug him from a distance and I feel great admiration for him. It is undoubtedly great and I hope I don't leave this world without being able to meet him.
I am so grateful for the incredible gift Andrew Garfield's portrayal of Johnathan Larson is with bringing him to life in Tick, Tick... Boom! I find myself completely mesmerised everytime I hear Andrew speak. Pure poetry in motion; his voice, his compassion, depth of understanding, and humble sense of being, where even in short interviews he takes us on an incredible journey. I felt the stabbing heartache of knowing that "lonely" and "precise agony", as he described the loss of his mother, and then a lightness of being, sharing how he feels her hand on his shoulder and hears his name in missing her. A beautiful and talented man on so many levels, and love, Love, LOVE his sense of humour ❤
I lost my Father when I was in my early thirties and I still talk to him and thank him almost everyday, I commend Andrew Garfield for acknowledging his Mother how I felt, feel, will always feel about my Dad. C'mon Academy, give him the OSCAR, his Performance was Transcendent x!
Gosh, I love this guy.
Shout out to the interviewer and her 5 kids! Love to Andrew too! I really hope he wins the Oscar.
And I have to add.. "Do you know how many Andrew Garfield's there are? ONE and he is F'N AMAZING!!!
Andrew is such a gentle and kind soul, bless his heart. He deserves everything good coming to him especially getting that Oscar award.
We love this man
AG is an absolute sweetie! So talented too!

What a lovely young man. 💖
Dude is 38
This was great interview. Thanks very much! 😁👌
One of the most beautiful interviews I've seen in a long time. Thank you to Andrew and Jackie.
He looks so hurt and in pain. I feel for him I can’t even imagine what I would do without my mum! My grandfather passed away and it hurt me so much
This movie has also helped me to accept my vulnerability, ny manliness and my own ability to solve and overcome what I lack. I learned to love the completeness of the incomplete of me
Andrew speaks to my soul, without even trying.
What a moving interview by such a lovely man x Your Mother must be so proud of you, my sincerest condolences 💐 x This felt like I was meant to see this today as Im having a day of self-care & focusing on memories & Happy Birthday wishes to my Mum for today x She passed away nearly 7yrs ago and I will miss her forever & always want too xx
He is just wonderful.
Losing a loved one is never easy, especially your mother. I’m certain that your mom is proud of what a kind, empathetic and polite man you have grown up to be.
Edit: Just to be clear, I wrote this with the best intentions. I’m sorry for your loss. My sincerest condolences, Andrew.
Beautiful soul.

🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺 andrew
We love you Andrew
Legends never die diamonds are forever always in mind and heart always diamonds are forever xxx
"we all leave with an unfinished song"
i'd die for him
The beard is fitting on him so well
Mr Garfield should play the lead on the life of Anthony Perkins.
Back in 2012 Andrew came into a store I worked at near the airport while he was on a layover in Tampa. I had no idea who he was but he looked familiar to me. I told him as much complimented his accent & he said he loved mine as well. We chatted for a good 20mins, he was SO kind & asked me all kinds of things about myself & laughed at my terrible attempt at mimicking his accent. At the end of it he asked if I'd like to join him for dinner before he left that evening & I told him I couldn't because I had to work (still not knowing who he was, just a really cute guy) & then he asked for my phone number & I had to decline because I was dating someone. He said "If we should ever meet again may we both be single, or at the very least, happy." I wished him a safe flight & when he left my employee ran up to me & said "That was the guy from Social Network!" (I'd never seen it) The One That Got Away. If I ever see him again IM GIVING HIM MY NUMBER haha
He’s old 4:52
I really hope one day he comes out❤️🌈
Never heard of him; who is he?
just one of the greatest actors in our time :-) Several Oscar (2), Tony (2), Golden Globe (4), Emmy (1) nominations as well as some awards (Tony, BAFTA, Golden Globe). Really impresive career in theater, movies and TV.
I didn't know he is English
@Joey Stocato, he holds dual U.K. / U.S. citizenship because he was born in Los Angeles and his dad was from California and his mum was from Essex and his family moved to London when he was three so that's the reason that he can jump very easily between using both an English accent and an American one, isn't it?
On the plus side for him if he's ever given any honours by H.M. The Queen then because of his dual nationality he can display each of them, can't he? In fact if she were to knight him he'd be quite entitled ( both figuratively and literally ) to be called Sir Andrew Garfield if he wanted to. He's such a nice bloke anyway and I doubt very much if he'd do that during any of his future acting rôles and the same is true of Anthony Hopkins, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart who never do that when they're starring in films, in television series or onstage because they see no necessity to do that. On the other hand when they're being interviewed they're often referred to by their titles as well as their names.
The same goes for Helen Mirren, Maggie Smith and Angela Lansbury all of whom are Dames and would likewise be entitled to have their titles on full display for us all to see, wouldn't they?
The pandemic came and taught everyone the importance of having multiple stream of income, unfortunately having a nice paying job doesn't mean you are financial secured anymore. So we all need to put in an etra-income earning chance, like investment.
Yeah!! It would be more beneficial and yield more profit if you actually trade on Cryptocurrency I've been trading since the dip, I've made so much profit trading
Crypto is bringing a different revolution in the world economy. People who are optimistic investors earn consistently.... Others will just sit and watch!
I've always wanted to trade on Crypto but got confused with the fluctuations in price
@@lunarobinson7147 I trade with Mr Andrew Jordan, and I must say he makes money making seem a whole lot easier right now I'm a single parent and I pay the bills comfortably since I met Andrew Jordan, He's absolutely amazing and I'd recommend him for any novice in crypto
Amazing!!!... I also started trading with Mr Andrew Jordan, He's the best at what he does with an initial investment of $1400 Canadian I made up to $5230 profit in just a week of trading with him, his strategies are mind blowing
Who?
Why don't you watch the clip and find out?
@@Lolalaior just ask Google ;-)
Must be hard being rich
It is definitely hard being bitter.
When you’re depressed, money means nothing
Money doesn’t rid the grief of losing a parent
What a stupid thing to say. Losing one's mother is a tragic thing no matter you are rich or poor.
Never heard of him. He must be a flunky hero of the left
What a silly thing to say. He is just somebody who does a job which just happens to be acting and he excels at it. Why would that be 'left' for goodness sake?
Dunno about 'flunky hero of the left' but he happens to be a phenomenally good actor both on screen and on stage.
