The arc of Warmbo being an Enlightened Centrist to becoming an unhinged conspiracy theorist makes so much sense. Cody has estranged him for so long, the only way to get his attention and keep a conversation is with increasingly insane political topics.
The thing is, Enlightened Centrist was code from the start. Kinda like "I'm not a feminist, I'm an egalitarian." Or Libertarians! A facetious allegation of a middle ground or principled ignorance that was always deeply ignorant of the left, very sympathetic to the right, and well outside an arms reach from any grass. SMN are pretty savvy of this sort of thing, so I'm pretty confident that they also knew that back then.

I've been trying to get media outlets to stop using "Conspiracy Theories," and replace it with "Baseless Claims." The word "conspiracy" implies some kind of thought and reason, and we know what these people spew. Seriously, you are extremely funny and deserve a much bigger audience. (Also Joe Rogan is an idiot)

Yeah I’ve noticed that a lot of right-leaning conspiracy theories are directed at very non-white areas (ie, after 2020 election, many of Trump’s claims of election fraud were directed at majority black cities such as Atlanta, Detroit, Philadelphia, etc)

Fun bit... a few years ago, I overheard a dude peddling a conspiracy theory to the lady who owns a local gun shop. He kept saying "they" until she finally gave him an exasperated look and said "who are THEY???"... to which he lowered his voice a bit and said "you know... the progressives. the commies." and her eyes nearly rolled all the way back into her head. She's also a registered republican who I've known for many years and even she couldn't deal with the nutters who make up stories to explain how Obama is secretly in charge of a communist revolution and is totally faking his conservative politics to spring a trap on rural bumpkins.

Biden talking about Lakin Riley was not fearmongering. It was, in fact, the opposite, which is obvious with just a *little* more context:
Marjorie Taylor Greene (featured in the clip) had brought the murdered woman’s family to the speech as a political stunt, and given Lakin Riley’s name on a pin to Biden, as an attempt to rattle him and fearmonger about immigrants.
During his speech, Biden brought up Lakin Riley, “killed by an illegal”, but then said “but how many people have been killed by legals?” To highlight MTG’s obvious hypocrisy of focussing on one murder committed by an undocumented person. And he said to the family “I share your pain of losing a child”.
Biden was taking MTG’s fearmongering, defusing it, and also empathising with the victim’s family. It was actually a great moment, other than offending liberals by using the buzzword “illegals”.

There is such a huge number of absolute BS outlets out there, that anyone who was drawn in by those ads, will be presented with pages of nothing but links to conspiracy peddling propaganda sites, without any risk of finding something that comports to reality. It's as disturbing as it is depressing.
There was a "freedom convoy" up here in Canada of truckers opposing mask mandates and vaccine passports mid-covid and of the tens of thousands of predicted trucks about 100 actually showed up. And then a couple dudes waved a nazi flag, vandalized a war memorial, and supposedly raided a food bank, and then half of them left immediately. Hilarious stuff
Friend of mine had to deal with a group of them that squatted in an abandoned church for a few weeks after the convoy.
They were harassing people walking by and ya know, being terrors. Eventually they were kicked out, but the law had to follow the proper channels so it took a bit.
A bunch of truck protesters were raided and arrested in Alberta on charges of having weapons and conspiracy to murder RCMP. Most of them ended up being released and charges dropped, because they pretty much just had their legal firearms and no evidence of intent to cause harm. But some of them had things like body armor and pipe bombs, and incriminating messages. Weapons fully loaded and ready to start shooting. 2 of them recently pled guilty to lesser charges, 2 more are still in trial. Looks like their next court appearance is this May. That shit was so wild.
I love the accusations by conservstives that the nazi flagbearers were false flags too. They very well could have! But whether they were or were not, what WAS real is the fact that not one of those truckers told them to kick sand.
and the half that remained were so mentally ill they spent the next month refusing to leave due to convincing themselves that they were freedom fighters really there to unseat the communist dictatorship of Trudeau and disband the extremist and polarizing authoritarian liberal party for good
The real revelation about the convoy were the Ontario police and RCMP who refused to do their job as it related to wealthy right-wing dipsh*ts. Y'know, the same ones who have no qualms threatening peaceful protestors at gunpoint when they're protesting building pipelines through indigenous land.

Fox News has the air of a news network. A lot of people don't know Fox News isn't a news network without actually researching it. Also it does help that Fox News is on most TV stations. There were years when I didn't have cable so I could only watch local networks and Fox News was one of those local networks.

I desperately need a full call-out episode for Russell Brand. The stench coming off his grift is reaching its zenith
I briefly watched Trews in the mid 2010s. He had an interesting way of breaking down mainstream media messages to show biases and contradictions, and did a lot of work boosting the voices of people fighting for housing, and anti-racism, and things like that. But I slowly fell off because the way he treated women grossed me out so much. He hardly ever had women in his RUclips videos, and when he did, it was 50/50 if he treated them respectfully or acted really raunchy and had his hands all over them. There was one video where he interviewed a group of 3 teenage girls about their part in a housing rights protest, and he constantly talked over them, made inappropriate jokes, and had his hands all over them. Any mainstream interview I watched of him, he was SO inappropriate towards women interviewers. I got so tired of it, I stopped watching him. 7 or 8 years later, he's being accused of multiple sexual assaults. A truly shocking development /s.
i feel like that zenith you're talking about was somewhere around mid-'22 and he's been increasingly irrelevant since the 5G antivaxxer moms were the loudest voices on social media when we were trying to get everyone vaccinated. at this point he's well and truly lost all of his clout.

I had a friend who's grandmother fell down the Q rabbit hole. And my friend (and most of his family) was fed up with the crazy, but she wouldn't listen to reason. So What he started doing is when spoke about crazy conspiracy theories. He would counter it with a made-up even crazier theory than what she would say, he went all in as if he actually believed it.
He suspects she's still on the crazy train but she's stopped bringing it up at family events.

The problem with conspiracy theories is that the people who are telling them are always alone on screen. There's never a debate. Never a conversation to immediately refute what they said and to prove it with examples, cases, documents etc. We Never see discussions anymore in the media. Everything is always the 1 or 2 people in perfect agreement, saying only one point of view. nobody is accountable anymore.
