I think the worst part of 40k is the apathy on the part of the Imperium. The suffering is mostly not caused by malice on the part of the government, it is merely does not care.
"To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable." -The introduction on the first fucking page of the 1E rulebook.
In 40k the best place to live in would be Ultramar, as much as people hate or meme on Guilliman and the Ultramarines, they have maintained and governed probably the only place were you could have a job that's 8 hour shift, "clean" and "safe" work environment and spend time with your family and friends. Unless Mortarion decides to throw another hissy fit against Guilliman or the Tyranids are hungry.
I think people tend to forget that even if you were born a noble things like diseases and childbirth were still major risks, there’s a reason nobles’ goal was to have as many children as possible bc they knew there was a good chance that like at least half would die before adulthood
If you were born in a baron family that’s particularly blue blooded, you likely also had the inbreeding to worry about. Anemia, tongue ties, sexual dysfunction. You name it, the family’s got it.
@@psyc8407 Ah, the Spanish branch of the Hapsburg family. To be fair, *we* think it'd be miserable to live back then because we have modern conditions to compare it to. Technically, living in the Farsight Enclave or a particular Eldar Craftworld would be a blessing, you would only need to worry about the things that directly wants to kill you or end up in a wraithguard.
The existential issue in 40k for me is living in a society where everyone is simultaneously prisoner and guard. The dangers are insane, but you could go your whole life without seeing a xeno or daemon. A 1984-esque society on top of the most oppressive theocracy in human history? That's something you'll have to face every second of every day if you're unlucky. Can you imagine living near sisters of battle or as a serf to one of the more nightmarish chapters?
Oof, I didn’t even think about that, absurd levels of government control and no obvious reason for it? And if you do learn that the government is worried about _demons_ invading? Nutmeg apparently had the reputation as the most bloody spice in terms of bodies spent for a pound of the stuff. I know only a little about Chinese history, and it makes me sad. What I've learned about is interesting, but still, it makes me sad. Namely Sun Yat Sen and a bit of the three kingdoms era. Just messes whose fixers fail or lose their way. Some days, I blame human centric writing. Others, bad writing in general. Then there are times when a character who's an idiot or too smart for their own good was intended as such, and it works. Indeed, the Imperium is humanity living one of its worst lives. To any who needs a descriptor of a hive, but has seen Arcane, I'd say, picture Zaun, but several dozens of times as big, nasty, dense, and soaked with socioeconomic inequality. It's not their fault. It's not even their ancestor's fault. The Craftworld and Exodite's ancestors saw the murder orgies and left. Yeah, they're written as inept meddlers so often that I think it undermines the "we're all equally valid" idea of various factions, but they didn't make the pink doom of their species. Meh, the Imperium's awfulness is overstated by the Fandom. For every grimdark Hive World or Forge World out there, there are multiple Agri-Worlds (which can range from neo-feudal hellholes to idyllic agrarian paradises) and Civilized Worlds (basically modern Earth's level of civilization, but more advanced and organized; most of them have at least the same quality of life as Earth does on average irl, if not better). And that's not to mention Ultramar, the smallish number of Imperial worlds out there that are prosperous and democratically governed, or the occasional Pleasure World (pretty much literal paradise). As for the wars, even if there were 10,000 worlds that were active warzones at any given time (which is likely a gross overestimate), that would still mean that only 1% of the Imperium is ravaged by conflict. Most humans in the Imperium probably don't live half-bad lives. And a large minority of the human population likely leads longer, more enjoyable lives than most people on Earth right now, irl. Bad shit happens in 40k all the time, and that whole universe is likely doomed in the end, but the idea that it's universally awful to be a human is just plain false.
People look how bad the Imperium is, and STILL prefer Guilliman over the Emperor. Seriously?! The Emperor's Golden Age wasn't even reached, Guilliman set up the modern day Imperium. Sure, Guilliman had plans to rework it later but he also did all of this of his own accord and edged out his brothers and any other Superhuman with an opinion, and THEN felt that as the weakest Primarch he could just box Daemon Prince Fulgrim!
