Try "The Siren" from the End of an Era concert, "Walking in the Air" from the From Wishes to Eternity concert for starters. As for her solo stuff try her version of "The Unforgiven" from Metal Church and her version of "Supremacy" @ Woodstock

Tarja has and will always be such a wonderful, and truly amazing part of Nightwish. Her work with Within Temptation and her own works are truly phenomenal; if my knowledge serves me right and isn't misled, Tuomas Holopainen even expressed loss in a song of his in a following album on his feelings for her departure from the band. You have to be a spectacular individual to inspire such feeling through song.

Great reaction. :) Tarja has soooo many great songs in her solo career and there you can hear her full vocal abilities, so I recommend react to her own songs or covers she did in her solo career. :) She has rock/metal songs, but she also performing classical songs and opera arias, she also has amazing christmas albums with dark versions of popular christmas songs and carols.

A few notes: This performance (both this song and the concert as a whole) were not controversial (beyond the Floor vs. Tarja comparisons), but it was the leadup to the concert and the events immediately following it, that were controversial. The person singing was Marko. He is the bass player and did vocals on a bunch of songs. The guitarist (shorter guy with no facial hair) is Emppu. Tarja has a lot of great stuff. Both with Nightwish and solo. She is definitely worth the watch.

Tarja's era is my favorite in Nightwish. But now I love her even more as a solo artist. She has a very extensive solo career as a rock and classical singer. The best concerts from her era in Nightwish are From Wishes To Eternity and End of an Era. Now she has released the Dark Christmas metal album, where she has very unique and haunting arrangements for well-known songs. In the summer, she also released Rocking Heels album of a live concert from a metal church, where she sings covers of her favorite rock songs, including Unforgiven by Metallica or Numb by Linkin Park.
Fun fact: In Broadway the final high notes were often pre-recorded because doing them every night was considered too taxing to the voice. In metal pre-recorded tracks for lead singing are a no-no, so Tarja did it all live here, as part of 1h43m long concert and in slight cold.

Asking for more Tarja is a slippery slope. She has a monstrously huge catalog. You'll probably get tons of NW suggestions. So I'll go with her solo career and collabs. Demons in you from Wacken with Allisa White Gluz. Victim of Ritual and Supremacy from Woodstock. Crimson Deep from Act II. Stargazers (nw song, but with her solo band) from Buenos Aires . Anything from her beauty and the Beats concerts. Oh and her and Within Temptation doing Paradise from Hellfest
The classical with the metal sound together is what drew me to Nightwish. So this combination will always be my fav. But Nightwish in any form is wonderful
Sarah Brightman was one of Tarja's idols and you can definitely tell in this performance. If you want more Tarja performances, check out Nemo, Dead Boy's Poem, Deep Silent Complete, Sleeping Sun, or Sacrament of the Wilderness. All great songs!

With Nightwish the song called the Siren (the live version from the End of an Era) is a really good one. It showcases well what she could do back then. Since her Nightwish days, Tarja's voice has evolved a lot and in a way matured more. It's a bit darker nowadays. With her solo career I recommend the song called Dead Promises. It's from her latest rock album, In the Raw (2019).

Great reaction! 🤘 🤟 I've seen vocal coaches say that it's perfectly fine to use your mouth for vibrato when using a mic, because you don't have to worry about projection. The mic does that for you.
Everything is fine. It’s all fine. But technique wise. It’s about not putting tension in your jaw. But all my vibrato does come from my jaw because I wasn’t trained any other way. So yes it is all fine!
Tarja has always been and always will be my favourite Nightwish vocalist, some of the bigger songs featuring Tarja would have to be 'Nemo', 'Wish I had an Angel' and 'Over the hills and far away'. Marko and Tarja were always the best together. They actually did some live stuff together recently.

Tarja was the singer that peaked my intrest for symphonic metal all those years ago around 1999-2000 i started to listen to them. It's really awesome that new people get there eyes opened for Tarja. One song that have always hade a strong spot in me is one of their OG song "the elven path", it has been forgotten by many and not sure of there is any good live version for it. But check out the Studio version atleast.
The only good live version of Elvenpath that i know of wasn't with Tarja. It was with Floor in the Decades tour. I wonder if there's any Elvenpath live videos with Tarja.. because it's one of the oldest NW songs I'm unsure that there is. 🤔
This is by far the best Nightwish version of the Phantom. Marco is his amazing self and Tarja is effortless in singing this as it is her style of singing. i don't know why it would be a polarising performance? Any time people say that I feel they are trying to create controversy where there is none? If you are referencing the Tarja v Floor well that is just fan bases being their idiotic selves.
I read somewhere that Tarja said "Sleeping Sun" was hard for her to sing live due to her classical training (which she pursued to help save her voice over time). Something about the breathing intervals or what-not. I'm not a vocalist so I don't know. Maybe check that song from the same concert "End of an Era" to see if she struggles.

I think this is still my favourite version of this song, but a couple of others do come very close (Tommy Johansson and, of course, Floor). Since you've ventured into old Nightwish at this time of year, you just have to hear their cover of Walking In The Air, it's a Christmas classic and Tarja's voice fits it perfectly.
For songs where Tarja's voice works better than later female leads I would recommend Sleeping Sun and Walking in the Air. Her voice is darker, and obviously more operatic, than say, Floor's but she stays pretty put inside one style of singing, and these are pieces where it works very well.
The performance wasn't controversial. Many people consider it the best version of this song. What was controversial was that Tarja was kicked out of the band (via a letter) after this concert. Being a longtime Nightwish fan, I believe it was all Tuomas' doing. I'm fairly certain he was in love with her and jealous of her husband.
They've performed this together again somewhat recently after many many years following Marko stepping back from Nightwish as well. Also some excellent Tarja reactions for her solo work would be: Demons In You (w/ Alissa White-Gluz), Innocence, and I Walk Alone.
There doesn't seem to be a lot out there in regards to gritty rock male vocals singing with clean female vocals, but it seems to work really well. An example of this from another band would be the song Not Gonna Die by Skillet.
Exactly! This is what people fail to understand imo. Floor on her own is technically a better singer than Tarja. BUT the colour of Tarja's voice and her singing style in conjunction with the band and Marco is what made Nightwish! Like you have put it so nicely, the duality. :)
@@curiousBPM All you need to do is point out that Tarja still has made more records with Nightwish than either of the other two ... they might tour a lot with Floor, but most of the songs were written for Tarja and had to be adapted to Floor's style of singing.
Yet Nightwish carries on.... Nightwish is Tuomas's vehicle of expression. IMO... The songs improved dramatically, once 'the boy' died. This performance of Phantom beats any version of Phantom Floor has performed...only because of Marco. Personally, I'd love a mash-up of Marcos' performance here with Floors' performance from Beste Zangers

Personally I think Marko's take on Phantom is far more remarkable than Tarja's interpretation of Christine. Tarja does a spectacular Christine, but it's essentially just the perfect form of the same character everyone portrays in that role Most people portray Phantom as a disfigured gentleman, poorly understood and mysterious, which makes other characters fear him, but once we pierce that veil there is a sympathetic character beneath. Marko portrays Phantom as borderline DEMONIC. He is an evil twisted manipulative creature to be feared. Christine has made a deal with an almost literal DEVIL in this interpretation, and Marko portrays that wonderfully.
Marko is the only real phantom, because he SHOULD BE dark and dangerous, but the typical stage way is "smooth" ... because the women are supposed to emphasize with him instead of being scared of him.
Congrats for getting the pronunciation more right than 98% of American reactors! The main thing to fix would be to make the As short; it sounded more Taarja than Tarja, but the R and J part was very well done.

But yeah, I'd listen to you do any of those, tho it could be dangerous: - Ear damage in the car. - First eaten by the squirrels - and it takes a long time to wash broken glass out of eyeballs...there's gotta be a better way. So I guess I'm stuck listening to you practice foreign pronunciations (always fun) and watch suddenly bulging eyeballs when a note is hit with aplomb. ...now, I gotz to go out into the storminess and feed the sheep without the squirrels and ducks getting me. after they fired her i tried to listen to a few songs but have never been able to listen to them since.. and i adjusted to sammy when dave left van halen and i'm partial to dave because i share his birthday 10 10 but found interesting sammy's is the 13th

Nightwish has become a lot of fans, because they create a new genre with tarja symphonic metal. 2. two bandmembers was very ill at this concert. the drumer has a bad migraine (at the beginnig you see how he is holding his head) and tarja has a bad flu. at the mornig she cant say only one word. 3. since nightwish has fired tarja, i dont have buy anything of them. nightwish is for me a metal band with a great opera singer.

Tarja's era is my favorite in Nightwish. But now I love her even more as a solo artist. She has a very extensive solo career as a rock and classical singer. The best concerts from her era in Nightwish are From Wishes To Eternity and End of an Era. Now she has released the Dark Christmas metal album, where she has very unique and haunting arrangements for well-known songs. In the summer, she also released Rocking Heels album of a live concert from a metal church, where she sings covers of her favorite rock songs, including Unforgiven by Metallica or Numb by Linkin Park.
Fun fact: In Broadway the final high notes were often pre-recorded because doing them every night was considered too taxing to the voice. In metal pre-recorded tracks for lead singing are a no-no, so Tarja did it all live here, as part of 1h43m long concert and in slight cold.
I experienced this tour when they were in the uk many moons ago. It was a magical experience hearing this song. The whole show was superb.

With Nightwish the song called the Siren (the live version from the End of an Era) is a really good one. It showcases well what she could do back then.
Since her Nightwish days, Tarja's voice has evolved a lot and in a way matured more. It's a bit darker nowadays.
With her solo career I recommend the song called Dead Promises. It's from her latest rock album, In the Raw (2019).
Good recommendations. I'll add "Love to Hate", and "Victim of Ritual" from her solo catalogue. And the live "Slaying the Dreamer" from the End of an era concert.

I've seen vocal coaches say that it's perfectly fine to use your mouth for vibrato when using a mic, because you don't have to worry about projection. The mic does that for you.
Everything is fine. It’s all fine. But technique wise. It’s about not putting tension in your jaw. But all my vibrato does come from my jaw because I wasn’t trained any other way. So yes it is all fine!
Tarja has always been and always will be my favourite Nightwish vocalist, some of the bigger songs featuring Tarja would have to be 'Nemo', 'Wish I had an Angel' and 'Over the hills and far away'. Marko and Tarja were always the best together. They actually did some live stuff together recently.

everyone knows Floor, she's super popular with everyone, especially right now, and is a really good singer, having a huge variety of singing capability (pop, classical/opera, belting, growling/raspy), able to sing nightwish's old songs that were for Tarja's classical/opera singing, as well as new songs for her own variety/range of singing abilities
Unfortunately for Annette, she's a pop/rock singer, and a very good singer too, but her pop/rock singing just didn't go that well with nightwish's music, which was made for Tarja's dark classical/opera singing. So, usually, she gets left out.
so, it comes down to "Targasm” (Tarja) vs “Floorgasm” (Floor) in terms of the Nightwish singers in who you like most, if you like classical/opera singing better, Tarja is better at it, but that's all she does back when with nightwish, as nightwish was created for tarja's unique dark operatic singing/voice, (now with her own band, or solo, she does a greater range of singing), but she does it really well, she's really got a beautiful voice, if you like more pop singing, belting and growling/raspy, with or without classical/opera singing, than you like Floor better
I knew nightwish from the early 2000s, so Nightwish will always be with Tarja, but Nightwish with Floor is really good too, but it's Tarja, who's my favorite singer with nightwish

this is about the 'phantom of the opera' with tarja nightwish, but it applies to tarja for all other NW songs too:
Tarja has her own stage performance/presence, but the focus is on the entire band (much more respectful), unlike with floor, where the focus is almost entirely on her, and also, Phantom of the Opera isn't about that much showmanship, so you're not seeing more of Tarja's performance/presence (love how the camera work and Tarja worked together, with her ducking down, seeing Marcus as he delivered his singing, and then Tarja stands back up, seeing her face back in the camera as Marco's part ends and hers begins again, Tarja is really such a team player, as she could have had all the focus upon herself, like Floor gets, but instead she chooses to give the entire band the respect and focus that they too deserve, it's not all about Tarja, like it is with Floor, despite how good Tarja is and thus how she could be the entire focus with nightwish, as is Floor with nightwish)
there's other songs, where Tarja was way way way more stage performance/presence/showmanship, including hair windmills, rocking an invisible guitar along with empuu rocking his guitar, along with her doing her squatting too as she sings and taps her foot/leg to it, as she's swinging those hips too, along with her getting the crowd involved as well too, and etc stuff, you got to watch way more songs, to really see her amazing stage presence/performance and showmanship, as Phantom of the Opera is likely the one song with the least of that stuff, due to the nature of the song itself, being about their singing (contrasting and then cacophonous harmonous duet, nothing can compete with Tarja and Marco voices duet'ing), though Marco and Tarja had a bit of showmanship and fun snuck into it, with Marco pointing to his face and Tarja's facial expression reactions, while both song their parts
Tarja was the singer that peaked my intrest for symphonic metal all those years ago around 1999-2000 i started to listen to them. It's really awesome that new people get there eyes opened for Tarja. One song that have always hade a strong spot in me is one of their OG song "the elven path", it has been forgotten by many and not sure of there is any good live version for it. But check out the Studio version atleast.
The only good live version of Elvenpath that i know of wasn't with Tarja. It was with Floor in the Decades tour. I wonder if there's any Elvenpath live videos with Tarja.. because it's one of the oldest NW songs I'm unsure that there is. 🤔

Marco is his amazing self and Tarja is effortless in singing this as it is her style of singing. i don't know why it would be a polarising performance? Any time people say that I feel they are trying to create controversy where there is none? If you are referencing the Tarja v Floor well that is just fan bases being their idiotic selves.

I read somewhere that Tarja said "Sleeping Sun" was hard for her to sing live due to her classical training (which she pursued to help save her voice over time). Something about the breathing intervals or what-not. I'm not a vocalist so I don't know. Maybe check that song from the same concert "End of an Era" to see if she struggles.

I think this is still my favourite version of this song, but a couple of others do come very close (Tommy Johansson and, of course, Floor).
Since you've ventured into old Nightwish at this time of year, you just have to hear their cover of Walking In The Air, it's a Christmas classic and Tarja's voice fits it perfectly.

For songs where Tarja's voice works better than later female leads I would recommend Sleeping Sun and Walking in the Air.
Her voice is darker, and obviously more operatic, than say, Floor's but she stays pretty put inside one style of singing, and these are pieces where it works very well.
Ahh yes, the absolute pinnacle of NW, I love NW and different eras. None can compete with this, flat out, at least to me.

The performance wasn't controversial. Many people consider it the best version of this song. What was controversial was that Tarja was kicked out of the band (via a letter) after this concert. Being a longtime Nightwish fan, I believe it was all Tuomas' doing. I'm fairly certain he was in love with her and jealous of her husband.

There doesn't seem to be a lot out there in regards to gritty rock male vocals singing with clean female vocals, but it seems to work really well. An example of this from another band would be the song Not Gonna Die by Skillet.
Tarja was Nightwish. When she left, the band lost the duality she brought to the band. Floor is amazing but she's no Tarja.
Exactly! This is what people fail to understand imo. Floor on her own is technically a better singer than Tarja. BUT the colour of Tarja's voice and her singing style in conjunction with the band and Marco is what made Nightwish!

Personally I think Marko's take on Phantom is far more remarkable than Tarja's interpretation of Christine.
Tarja does a spectacular Christine, but it's essentially just the perfect form of the same character everyone portrays in that role
Most people portray Phantom as a disfigured gentleman, poorly understood and mysterious, which makes other characters fear him, but once we pierce that veil there is a sympathetic character beneath.
Marko portrays Phantom as borderline DEMONIC. He is an evil twisted manipulative creature to be feared. Christine has made a deal with an almost literal DEVIL in this interpretation, and Marko portrays that wonderfully.
Marko is the only real phantom, because he SHOULD BE dark and dangerous, but the typical stage way is "smooth" ... because the women are supposed to emphasize with him instead of being scared of him.
