  • In this one, we head to a spot I have always wanted to go to, Haunted Ridge! We made a short pit stop on our way down to Florida, and an even longer stop on our way back, and collected some absolutely phenomenal specimens! Big crystal clusters, druzy coated glitter bombs, sparkly bortyoidal goodness, but I have to admit that out of all of the amazing things that Haunted Ridge has to offer, it was the agates that i fell in love with! Absolutely phenomenal lacy fortification agates everywhere you look! This place is heaven! Unfortunately, our hunts were too long to do the material justice, so make sure to come back for part two where we will be cleaning our specimens in iron-out and feeding them to the slab saw to see how they look inside! I hope you all enjoy, and I will have another one out soon!

    Can you imagine going to public spots in MO and getting that stuff for FREE?! When I lived in the St Louis area, I used to go hiking at Hawn State Park and happened on an area that had all kinds of that stuff (not in the park but on the way). Old Disabled House Bound Dusty Rusty Rockhound here: I still have several extra large specimens of that rock from years past. Takes some time and some Iron Out... but yields fantastic displays. I kept some unteated cleaned specimens as garden/yard ornaments... which looks fascinating, in my opinion. I'm so glad you were able to get out in that area and enjoy collecting. Man, this place has been a bucket list locality for years. One of the few localities near me (much smaller area and now closed/protected) yielded similar specimens. I will add to The Rock Master's suggestions--I got my hands on a handheld laundry spot cleaner, basically an electric powered hand-held-size power washer, cost maybe 30 bucks from amazon? Gets into the small nooks and crannies really well and great for clusters of smaller crystals. Trying to remember if Montana has poison ivy cuz you guys were surrounded by it there @11:12 !! Yes I am addicted to Haunted Ridge. I live six hours away from there and I try to go there at least 3 times a year. You should power warsh or hose off all of the dirt on all of the pieces then soak them in Iron Out. Evan the crystals. Iron Out will bring out the luster in the crystals. I soak my pieces in Iron Out for 1 to 3 days. You need to go back and spend some more time there. I saw that you were near root beer hill. You need to go to that spot and dig to get some root beer quartz plates. Can't wait to see you cut the agates.

      @@TheoKellison If you do come back the fall like in middle to late October or early November is the best time to go. All the creepy crawleys will be gone. That is when I go. So, I watched to the end and had to keep from smiling because what we found on our first trip would have had you freaking. I won't say anything more except to say that my wife of 48 years will still not allow me to bring rocks upstairs for display except for one (and I have so many beautiful rocks from everywhere). It came from Haunted Ridge. Many of the plates from that day were the size of those big, stripy watermelons if you cut them in half longways. What you found was nice but. oh, my what is still to be found in that county is crazy. We are not known for rocks here in Missouri bur people would be surprised to know what I know about rocks around here. Just sayin'

    • @TheoKellison
      @TheoKellison  2 месяца назад

      Oh I don't doubt it at all! We barely got a half hour in the first day, and then we rolled in right after an extremely heavy rain the second day so we didn't do any digging in the mud bog, and again only got like two hours, so we BARELY even scratched the surface! I absolutely can't wait to go back and spend more time, if we were finding stuff like that on the surface I can't even imagine what is hiding there if you had time to do some digging! It was just enough time to prove that we absolutely need to come back 😂 Missouri has quickly become one of my favorite states! Such amazing material and fossils out there!

    Long videos aren't a bad thing.

    • @TheoKellison
      @TheoKellison  2 месяца назад

      It's more from an editing standpoint than anything, most of my videos contain at least 100 individual video clips, but once they get longer than a certain point, it gets REALLY time consuming to get through all of the footage, and the files get massive. This video for example was 17 GB of raw footage so it takes a huge amount of time for my poor computer to render everything, so it's not so much that I have an issue with long videos so much as I try to keep the files and editing more manageable for my computer. Whenever I upgrade my setup I will very likely be posting longer videos more regularly though!

    Awesome material. I'm excited to see them cleaned and cut. I have a problem I'm hoping you can help me with. I have a piece of black agate from west Texas with a cavity on one end filled with quartz crystals. They look clear and black but the black is probably the agate showing through. I've tried muric acid, iron out, and using a textile gun to clean the crystals and when wet they look awesome but when the dry they're clouded over. Any advise on what to do to get them to look like the do when wet?

    • @TheoKellison
      @TheoKellison  2 месяца назад

      Interesting 🤔 that could be a result of a number of different things, maybe even a thin chalcedony layer over the crystals, I had a few like that from this trip. Look amazing wet but then when they dry the luster goes away. One trick that might help is something Derek the Rock Master taught me, if you brush a thin layer of mineral oil over your specimen, then put it in the oven on really low heat for about fifteen minutes to a half hour, it thins the oil enough to really soak into all of the cracks and makes a tiny film over the crystals so the result is a higher luster. I actually do that with all of my calcite specimens from Florida. It may be worth a shot! Worst case scenario is you don't like the way it looks and it's a simple matter of brushing it with dawn dish soap to get the oil back off. It's important to do a really low heat though, and don't preheat it first because the temperature shock may cause fractures, just let it come up to temp with the oven and then cool slowly. I've had really good results doing this with calcite and clear quartz!

      @@TheoKellison Thanks Theo. I've got it in the oven right now. I'll let you know how it comes out. If that doesn't work out I can always cut the agate to see what sort of patterns it has inside.

    • @jimellis936
      @jimellis936 2 месяца назад

      @@TheoKellison Well, I tried heating the stone with a coating of mineral oil. Showed improvement but doesn't sparkle as much I was hoping. However, it did show some of the fortification pattern of the agate well. So I think I'll cut it. Now I just have to wait for the replacement belt for my slab saw to come.
