    The best tools in the shop are the ones you build yourself out of necessity. There are many "homemade" tools in my little shop. You do beautiful woodturnings, Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us.

    Hi Yuval, good to see you back in your shop. These are a great home project, I made one a couple of years ago following Captain Eddie. I turned a handle, inserted a piece of tube at 45 degrees with a rare earth magnet at the base. I use it more than my Sorby sander, maybe because it fits my hand & approach to the piece. Thanks also for the link to the discs, it's a nightmare in the UK to find anything higher than 400 grit.
    Take care my friend.
    All the best,
    Geof.

    • @yuvallahav
      @yuvallahav  7 лет назад +1

      Thank you Geof! I was also thinking back in the day to make a tool like Captain did, but I had some reserve of the mechanical part of the build. When I found Miguel's video, well, it seemed simple enough and since I was able to source the part I needed locally, it only seemed right I'll just go for it this time, and I'm glad I did :) I'm also happy you found the disks links helpful!
      Yuval.

    One sander I built (and you may want to try it out) is, I turned a handle out of hardwood and bought 2 rare earth magnets 1/4" round and a length of brass tube that the arbor shaft fits inside freely. One end of the handle I drilled a hole in the end and the opposite end of the handle I drilled a hole at a 30 degree angle. I applied finish to the handle then dropped a magnet in the holes and used epoxy to glue the brass tubes into each hole. This will hold the sanding head in the handle and I use the angled end to sand the outside and inside surfaces of spindles and bowls and in the end hole to sand the bottom of a bowl or a turned box. I think the cost was around $5.00 for the magnets and the brass, a tube of epoxy and the wood was a scrap piece I had not discarded. Yur design I like as well, along with all your other turnings.

    • @yuvallahav
      @yuvallahav  7 лет назад

      Thank you James!! That was an elegant solution you worked out, the question is, will I need to try that out now that I have the sander I made? :) I do plan to make another just like it, only on a short handle to it will fit nicely in my sanding discs box you can see at the start of the video.
      Yuval.

    • @jamesstanlake4064
      @jamesstanlake4064 7 лет назад +1

      You may want to try it out anyway. I not only made my sander that way but it also worked great to make a texturing tool with one of tose economical grinding burr tool bits, it emulates the one you see in turning catalogs nder the name of "the Elf" tool (you can find a video of it on RUclips). Works great for any rotary tool that has a 1/4 inch shank.

      Always wanted to make a texturing tool, but still did not find anywhere to source a metal cogwheel for the cutter...

    I made a rotary sander as well. Mine is made from an old air powered die grinder, slightly modified to work just like yours. Along with the fact that with this type tool there are no sanding marks, I've also found that the sand paper doesn't load up nearly as bad as hand sanding. This is a wonderful method for sanding on a lathe. I'll be upgrading my crude setup as soon as I find an acceptable angled drill attachment like the one you used. Excellent video on the subject Yuval. Thanks for the chuckle at the end. :)

    • @yuvallahav
      @yuvallahav  7 лет назад

      Thank you Gil!! I updated my video description with the Amazon link where I get the attachment from, and Amazon could direct you to a local source, people have already used it to order and found the same tool in the US for 10$, So it's a good investment. Seen people use the same grinder you describe, but some said there was a lot of inside friction in them so they didn't spin as they hope it would, did you find it the same?
      Yuval.

    • @gilgrace1915
      @gilgrace1915 7 лет назад +1

      I think I've seen these attachments in the local hardware stores and a discount tool store as well. I'll check them out to inspect the quality before buying one.
      As to the die grinder, I mentioned that I had modified mine a bit. I'm a former auto mechanic and have some mechanical engineering training, so I love to tinker with mechanical things to see how they work.
      I discovered that a die grinder and most air powered tools have a sort of barrel shaped solid drum on the main shaft. Slots are cut into the drum parallel to the drive shaft and thin plastic or fiber vanes fit into the slots. Compressed air blows across the vanes to spin the shaft. I simply removed the vanes along with the air valve and trigger. Now the shaft spins freely. I still have to add a drop of oil from time to time to protect the internal bearings. It is a bit awkward to use, but is an old cheap one not being used any more.
      I like the quick change feature of your tool, I have to change the sandpaper to change grit. Mine requires two wrenches to change the entire sanding pad, so not very efficient. Sorry I get carried away when I start talking sometimes.

    • @yuvallahav
      @yuvallahav  7 лет назад

      A good input! Don't be sorry for talking something we could all learn from!!
      Yuval.

    • @gilgrace1915
      @gilgrace1915 7 лет назад

      Thanks for the encouragement, I'd like to add a couple more thoughts. One could mount a rotary bit in the chuck and try some limited texturing. You just need a bit with a spiral design in the cutting teeth.
      Also I've covered my grinder with duct tape to keep the sanding dust out of the internal parts, it makes for a comfortable handle as well.

    • @gilgrace1915
      @gilgrace1915 7 лет назад

      The texturing aspect came from watching a video using the Henry Taylor Decorative Elf texturing tool.

    Hello Yuval. This is another great video from you which motivated me to give it a try. I purchased the same angle adaptor that you used and found an improvement to make it turn better. There are split rings on both ends of the adaptor. Removal of the split ring on the side with a tube allows the tube to be removed. Then the shaft, which you had cut off, can be removed along with the pinion gear. The sanding disc will spin freely after replacing the tube and split ring. Also, if the split ring is difficult to remove with your available tools, just grind down the edge of the adaptor to gain access the ring.

    • @yuvallahav

    Toda Yuval, I am busy making one myself - starting with the handle from one of the Eucalyptus branches I had lying around.
    I wanted to ask - why do you mention not putting glue on the last centimetre of the connector when putting it in? Moreover when you later put a bead of glue all around the final edge. What purpose does it serve not having glue at the top part?
    Thanks.

    • @yuvallahav
      @yuvallahav  3 года назад

      The reason is that I don't want glue to get into the moving parts and block them, it's as simple as that.

      On that part there are no moving parts, which is why I was wondering.
      Anyway, after using my complete one for a couple of months, I probably need to make a new top, because the foam has already torn (the one that holds the sandpaper)

It's used for and in many things. It's soft but very durable, I'm still using the same pad, although it does show some wear and I'll probably replace it soon.

      Of course I won't forget, it's what I've been using up till now, in some of my videos you can see me use these pads for power sanding with a hand drill, also made a video a couple of years back on making the pads.

      No need to be sorry, I've got plenty of self humor, which is why I leave these parts inside the video, nothing like a smile to brighten your day :)
