Talking Watches With Patrick Getreide, Owner Of The OAK Collection - An Unreal Assortment Of Pateks

- The weird and wonderful world of watches is full of characters with the greatest degrees of passion. And the very best of them are not only deeply thoughtful and incredibly committed to the pursuit of collecting, but also to the idea of sharing all he or she may have learned over the years. Consider the likes of John Goldberger, Jason Singer, and Alfredo Paramico, for example, who have been dedicated players on the high-end auction scene long before the likes of most of us, and took the time to share all they'd learned with us here on Talking Watches. Today I am so pleased to introduce you to another such man - a watch collector of the absolute highest order, Mr. Patrick Getreide, or, the owner of the OAK collection.

Man, I never thought showing off some of the rarest Pateks in the world would be so boring.
Just as I thought.
Lol!! How strange My thoughts exactly..I clicked on the video expecting to be wowed. I made it half way through.
@@ryanbanks4265 Same.
@@TheJonCruise It just shows there was no love in this collection. Just for the value. I start to follow less of Hondinkee because it has become a cash grab site.
@@lipinglin1994 me too... It's sad because I've followed Hodinkee TW since the beginning (but didn't like the JM episode)
The most appealing aspect of Talking Watches are the stories that accompany the people and the pieces. This lacks in that regard unfortunately.
Totally agree. The Talking Watches that really "work" are as much (or more) about the person (enthusiast/collector) and their stories about their watches than anything else. Some of the best "Talking Watches" episodes (in my opinion) are with people who don't have "stellar" watch collections but who are very interesting people with a great story to tell about the emotional attachment they have to their hobby or individual watches - Gary Shteyngart and David Williams being great guests in this regard.
Other guests on Talking Watches like Alfredo Paramico and John Goldberger, who have amassed incredibly rare (and very valuable) watch collections, "gave" a lot of themselves in their episode and their enthusiasm for the hobby really came across - both very charasmatic guys who probably enjoy "the chase" to track down a particularly rare watch almost as much as owning it... This episode was really stale in comparison. We learned little or nothing about Patrick Getreide in the video - other than he's obviously a very wealthy man.
One of a kind on repeat!!!
I'd take this than the dozens of collectors' stories about, ugh....Rolexes
tbf this is a different kind of collection. Like someone putting together an extensive art collection. Dude even got his own personal curator for the collection. It would belong in the museum rather than in someone's watch box.
@@grantchallinor5263 I wanted to write exactly what you mentioned. I would add Josh Bernstein to the list of the best talking watches in my opinion, as well as the US veteran , I think his name was Moki Martin
how can he not remember the first Omega watch he bought that he viewed 50 times before he bought it?
It was an Omega Moonswatch. He is too embarrassed to reveal it
He’s super old. I can’t even remember the first guitar I wanted when I was 14 and I’m 30 lol
So the guy on the left does all the research about the watches and tells Patrick Getreide what to buy? Ok got it.
He's pretty much looking at watches as rare collectible art.
The quality of Mr. Getreide’s Patek Phillipe collection speaks for itself. The collection reflects a great legacy in watchmaking. It is hard to condense everything (including the underlying vision for the larger collection in its entirety) into 10 minutes. TheHenry Gray tourbiillon deserved 30 minutes on its own. To those who have expressed comments about the elite nature of the collection, such is life. Does one stay away from a definitive Cezanne show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art because they will never be able to personally own an original Paul Cezanne? Of course not. No matter if one collects only Illinois, Hamilton, Swatch, Seikos, or whatever, seeing the 50+ Patek references together as a whole is inspiration for what people with less expansive pocketbooks can do when they focus in on affordable watches which give them bliss. There are vintage watch collectors of a certain vintage and temperament who have never paid very much for any single reference but whom have developed breathtaking collections.
Agreed. The purpose of this video isn't to flex on the general public (if it were, only the most popular models of the Patek range would be shown). This is closer to a museum experience and they do their best to highlight the importance of a collection as a whole and the legacy of the brand.
Well said
I love how they have tens of millions of dollars of watches sitting on a $42 table made of 2x4s and wall-to-wall carpet from my grandma's basement.
Just the 1518 on the bracelet is worth close to 10 million, i would guess that table is worth not very far from 100 million
Awesome collection. Hollow episode, Dink.
This one missed the mark for me, I think, because the collection felt so impersonal and sanitized. This collection is objectively impressive, but I've always felt that what made "Talking Watches" special was its ability to illuminate a common thread of emotional relatability between watch enthusiasts, regardless of their collecting experience. The episodes featuring Moki Martin, Daniel Dae Kim, and Howie Kendrick are emblematic of this quality. But having now heard Mr. Getreide "Talk Watches" for 11 min, I can't say that I have any understanding of his personal affinity for any of these pieces beyond their objective rarity.
True. But he was honest in the beginning of the video when he said it’s take “ Time and Money” . So he’s clearly a collector that simply can afford these. You’re right… he has no emotional attachment to these. He doesn’t even remember his first watch.
John’s Talking Watches was one of the best from a celebrity with big money. His connection to the watches did come off as truly authentic
“Difficult, you have to earn them, you have to fight”
- the guy who sends other people to get him a watch he wants
With his wealth he has a personal shopper. Peasants like us will never understand
I was thinking the same ..
that oak black dial breguet numerals has to be the most beautiful watch i've seen
Take a shot every time he says, “one of a kind.”
I just, these people are the exact type of people that make it impossible to find good watches anymore. Not even wearing them too is just a slap in the face. Idk...
Paintings should be looked at, cars driven and watches worn. Certainly nice that we got a glimpse of this stunning collection, but somehow it feels dead.
Straps look like plenty of them are worn.
@@dellwright1407 maybe only on a watch roll 🧐. I do feel it’s such a shame for them not to be worn
I agree - I saw a collection of over 50 rare cars gathering dust in a poorly lit warehouse whose owner was reluctant to appear on screen and the only question I had was what’s the point of such a collection if you do not even drive them?
Insane collection on a completely different level than any of the other talking watches.
If anyone has wondered what would happen if an entry level Seiko hoarder won the world's largest lottery, well now you have your answer.
Absolutely love this episode but feel like it should have been done in a similar fashion to the Ed Sheeran special. To have such a vast collection surely warranted an hour special where we got more of the stories behind the purchase. You didn’t even ask what he was wearing on his wrist and why. I’ve been left wanting more, much more!
Sheeran doesn't own 600 of the absolute fine watches that's why. And cuz he can't go over 10 million or 20 million for a watch like Patrick does. There are different levels to this watch game. pat is tier 1 and Ed is tier 3.
@@ashvinbissesar5427 I think you've misunderstood me. I'm saying the same thing as you are in that Pat has an elite collection but only gets a 10 minute Talking Watches. It should have been much longer and we should have got more stories about his collecting and his personal attachments to them.
@@razrsharpuk7487 OK bro, thnx for clarification I appreciate it. 🙏
All nicely displayed on a table of plywood and 2 x 4 in the corner of a parking garage. Love it.
Wow stunning collection, 30yrs of the finest watch making, craftsmanship. The Pocket Watch is a perfect example of that. Beautiful!
As impressive as this collection is, this episode is one of those that I do not connect with. Sure these episodes are relevant!..... but when everything is so elite, ultra-rare, unaffordable etc....I do not get the same vibe as when talking "smaller" collections.
Thats understandable for sure, but if he doesn’t do episodes like this then most of the world would never even get to see these pieces on video.
@@kowzter good point.
While I totally share your sentiment, but I also thoroughly enjoy the episode for the information and history.
Its really about the collector imo and not about the elite or unavailability of the pieces.. The John Mayer pieces (and a lot of other collections seen on TW) are ridiculous as well but its obvious he has a real passion for them, while this dude literally has a guy next to him, who does the research and tells him what to buy
Saw the collection this morning - I must say it is astonishing!
Went to the exhibition today and was completely blown away by the watch on display but most importantly the guy on the left is the nicest person to talk watches with
Some of these watches just make one smile - awesome, awesome, awesome, especially the color palette.
Just a rich guy who chose to spend his money on watches instead of art. No heart or passion.
Ben: What is that?
Collector: I don't know.
One of a kind 😅
I also don't like he didn't remember the Omega that started it all for him
You have to hand it to the curator though, at least he knows whats going on
frankly a bit harsh, he clearly loves his watches
@@edl7159 he loves what his curator tells him he should love
Outstanding. Talking Watches with Ben never disappoints. Reminds me of the good old days of Hodinkee. Cheers.
I am drooling by watching this video. So many Pateks.
Well done Hodinkee on this episode. I can't imagine it was easy to get this to happen. Super collection that deserves way more than 10mins
3:10 wow...super GRAIL 😱
Maybe its just me but i rather hear some guy telling a cool or meaningful story connected to his Seikos and G-shocks than this. Obviously the watches are an absolute dream but everybody with enough disposable income can just spend money and rattle of reference numbers..
I don't get why people are knocking on Patrick for not having a 'story' with every Patek he owns. Also, not everyone who appears on Talking Watches has to be an interesting conversationalist. The sheer insanity of his collection is interesting enough. But granted if you wanted more geek facts, the Hodinkee article that accompanies this video does have Ben geeking out on many of the watches shown in this video. I'm just glad that I have the privilege to peer into a collection I'll never be able to see in the flesh.
wow wow wow. incredible, stunning. lost my words. You might wanna part 2.
Would be interesting to hear from the curator and watch maker about their process from research, selecting, storing and maintaining
What an insane collection. Love it. Different episode but absolutely love it. Variety is the spice of life. Great job Ben.
I prefer small, personal, cheap, but emotionally important collections over business stock collections.
But you won't have known any human alive owned about 600 luxury watches, and it would never be posted on some new age medium called social media.
@@RolexTimex I don't really care to be honest.. It is just a business at this point. Investment portfolio, not a collection.
Wow, just wow. I'm in love with the 1579 in white metal ! (And the Worldtime with the blue enamel dial , of course)
It amazes me that he has to have his “curator” there with him to help answer questions. No true watch enthusiast needs a “curator”. Nice watches should be bought for intrinsic satisfaction. If you need the work with a “curator” then there are other factors entering into the buying process.
Although I agree with you, when you have over 600 watches lol I’d need some help keeping up too
This is a really good observation. A car collector who needed a curator would be ridiculed. Jay Leno, for example knows his collection inside out, which is the whole point of valuing your collection.
@@NW-lj6oo Sure, but Jay Leno has people that help him fix, restore and maintain all his 150+ cars.
What an episode. Great collection, keep it up guys
This is an incredible collection! Only 50 out of the 600 were even on the table and we didn't get through them. This video requires a much longer sequel.
Millions in watches on a $20 table....lol
Fantastic! And not a single nautilus - even better!
I swear the Alfredo Paramico episode had some of the so-called one-of-a-kinds Calatravas lol. Granted the difference is probably a reference number but I'd say Ben was biting his tongue not to out curate the curator at times😂. Great episode as always though, love seeing Ben back in action!
Yup. I was like, “hey I remember those watches”. So much for one-of-a-kind.
Ah the silver fox with the Supreme hoodies!
"delicious" 😁
He bought those?
I find this a welcome change since there are no pretentious "stories" behind each watch. The two gentlemen seem to really know their watches. They are keeping it real.
"Time and Money" man keeps it real
Some of the stories people say on the other episodes do sound exaggerated at times.
He earned them and is here is share his collection, not tell stories to entertain. Fantastic man of capability to amass such a wonderful collection.
I see Talking Watches, I click!
Was reading about the oak collection the other day. Great to learn about some of his watch from the man himself.
To pay a man to talk about your own hobby is new to me.
What a collection. Such an amazing talking watches.
Amazing collection. Love the stories
Great video and collection, as usual.
whoever inherits this collection down the line will receive an absolute goldmine, unbelievable collection
I wish this episode was longer than 10 mins. Hoping for part 2 in the near future
What a show! Between the podcast episode with Michael Friedman, and then todays Talking Watches with Patrick Getreide; you guys are delivering too much awesomeness!
This was the most watch nerdiest episode I've ever seen - and I loved it. :D
Very cool episode
Unbelievable watches, but a depressingly drab/grey presentation. Came across as an audit.
This video was one of kind
A welcome change of pace for talking watches.
We need a part 2. And 3.
Wow super nice vid and the most exquisite watches in the world!!!! Merci
Imagine having a collection so complete that Patek Phillipe comes to you and says: "We're going to make you a one of a kind watch to match some of the watches you already own because even we are impressed." 🤣
Thanks Patrick ❤
What a flex
Not a bad episode, but very hard to relate considering how unattainable and luxurious the collection is. A little on the stale side.
So just to get this straight - we're shown multiple one-of-a-kind pieces here, and your response is "stale?" I don't think you really grasp the meaning of that word. Just a reminder that a genuine enthusiast can appreciate examples outside of his/her personal budget.
Fossil makes similar looking pieces
I totally agree. If you’re starting an episode with a pocket watch with a tourbillon in it, you know the episode is gonna be impossible to relate to and kinda stupid.
Finally a none dive+gerald genta focus collection in a long time!
beautiful collection, but felt sterile, I could not feel a connection to the person or the watches. I prefer when you guys sit down and have a conversation with a watch lover. Not just a rich hoarder.
man that gold nautilus is just beautiful
I LOVE watches and collecting. This is both glutenous, and proof money does not equate to presentation skill.
My new favorite collection.
Just, wow.
We need to view more episodes of such collectors, amazing.
These are the kind of unicorn collections we’ve always been told exist, but had never seen until now… pretty epic.
That’s insane watch collecting “level 1000”. compared to my two watch collection, Seiko skx007 and my orient Kamasu.
Great to see Ben back
Great episode. The only thing I wish is a much longer video so we can go into the details of each and more of the watches. Feels rushed! Hodinkee at its (nearly) best
that world timer with the blue enamel dial . OMFG. What a Beauty😶
I really liked it !!
All the 2499s lol insane! Great collection
Thats absolutley crazy
Would be good if the watches got more camera time….looks like we only saw about 10% up close
You thought it was necessary to introduce Jack Nicklaus, but not Patrick Getreide? The best part of Talking Watches is learning about how someone's career corresponds with their collection. Alfredo Paramico should really be the model for these - get a peek into their life, and clips that showcase their enthusiasm.
True, got a point there
Awesome 👍🏾
The guy on the left didn't like matey touching the watches lol
I can’t afford even one strap for any of these watches, never mind the watches themselves but it doesn’t matter. The passion and dedication these men exude is wonderfully infectious. I hope Hodinkee release an hour+ long version of this video.
Imagine having the option to wear a different watch every day for almost two years? The mind boggles!
And imagine his insurance premium 😳
Oh my, I didn’t even think about the insurance 🤣 - good catch!
@@TheTeaisDelicious
I'm sure he can afford it though- given his collection. Cheers.
Pretty wild how one person owns this many rare pieces. Can you imagine the enjoyment 600 people would have just owning one of these watches? Hard to relate….
Anyone know the brand of Ben's glasses? They look great!
Guy has a personal historian and watchmaker for his collection. pretty wild. 1st series 2499 and 1518 have to be two of the most beautifully designed watch dials ever made.
Wow. Monochrome crushed this one. Their video is worth a watch. How it should be done.
you know its a good collection on talking watches when ben himself shows up to the episode. unreal collection
"Kids, Kids, gather round! Hear Yee, hear yee! For you too can be a watch collector...if you are rich first!"
Any of these watches one of a kind ? 😂 awesome collection !
in the video names a calatrava 570 yellow gold , i remember the episode of Alfredo Paramico where he show us one of those, there is any difference between the watches ? (sorry about my writing)
Nice collection
Nico need to rate this collections...
Don’t think Nico has any appreciation past steel sports “god tier”
There is probably a yearly budget of a small country on that table...
The passion with which he has collected makes the money seem so small. Amazing OAK !
Right but his wealth is the only reason this collection exists!
@@christga100 Yes obviously being rich or poor is not crime, however this guy didn't seem to have much passion to me & didn't seem to know much about most of his watches in this collection, quite often his 'curator' would answer for him. He seemed to see watches as items to be acquired, hence my comment about this collection existing more because of money than passion
He personally gave me a list of 30 Pateks to own...hell of a guy !
Looks like a viewing room at duty free storage... the plywood table with carpeting aesthetic, lol.
The world time takes my breath away! I have the 5130r and love it to death!
Whole different level collecting than most of us are used to. I won’t knock him for having a curator assist him with the purchases.
And here I felt guilty hoarding two Calatravas…
7:56 Patek chronograph watch breaks every 3 months? Thanks for enlightening us, sir
