You made me giggle...DIY'ers don't usually use the word impinge!! Class act. Funny how I've watched 5 different videos and pick up something special from each one. I'd been trying to position my heater under a caravan seat so I could hook up the supplied intake AND outlet air tube, but your video opened up the possibility of a tubed outlet, and just a cavity with an unrestricted air flow (via a vent) without the need for ducting. Thanks for posting your install. Legend.

Good man! Glad you increased the clearance, I've measured the temp of my exhaust at 180 degrees Celsius, I thought you were going to be using that fire extinguisher before long
Cheers, yep Matt (the owner of the camper) seemed like a fan of keeping the fire inside the heater as opposed to all around it!
these heaters are a game changer when camping in winter, we run ours on the a frame of the tow bar with some bunnings heat proof tubing through to the a hole in the tent on the floor. I have put another hole for the temp controller so it fits in the pocket inside for easy access. 10lt of diesel for 4 days camping running all night on the lowest setting.

A far as I’m aware, the exhaust pipe should run downhill to allow water build up to release from a hole in the silencer.
I agree it's not bad idea, though the heater has been running for a while now without issue with the exhaust. I'll update the description if there are any issues with the install or the heater itself.

This is the best installation video on RUclips ive seen , im about to fit one in my 25ft Hobby caravan, i ordered one from Ali Baba a month ago, it finally arrived yesterday, i got stung £25 import duty, but overall cant wait to get it fitted, its only August but some nights we put the gas fire in at night for an hour or so, come winter it dont go off, this costs a fortune, hopefully il save some money by running it on Kerosene, 60p a litre or red derv at 75p a liter, where i get it straight from the pump

According to RUclipsr John McK 47, an extremely knowledgeable expert on the Chinese Diesel heaters, he advises the fuel pump should be mounted as close as possible to vertical as it utilizes diesel for lubrication during reciprocation. It appeared you mounted it near horizontal, which permits air cavitation on top and allows metal to metal contact on the pump internals. All the best M8, nice video.

Buy Cheap....buy twice. Just remember, this is a cheap blow torch surrounded by plywood and you're sleeping above it. I fitted an Autoterm heater for around $1300. It's not a cheap chinese copy, it's a Russian made unit with a great controller that works well and been tested down to -52 degrees C.
Sometimes you do definitely get what you pay for, though having said that, this heater is still working flawlessly.
So does the pump work on pulses of DC with alternating polarity to send the solenoid back and forth? For some reason I thought the solenoid operated on a spring return mechanism instead.
I think you did a great job on the install. That said I would personally recommend that you have a heating expert have a look and see if they can recommend any safety upgrades .
Having someone professionally trained give you a ok will let you and your family sleep safely knowing that it’s not going to be a problem.
That's solid advice. At the moment the camper is equipped with both a smoke alarm and carbon monoxide alarms.

Did you wrap the exhaust where it exits under the van with any heatproof tape and would you consider this a good idea?
We didn't, it would be a great idea though if the exhaust passed pass something that might melt.
@@LockyourHubs4WDing I'm going to wrap my exhaust pipe with header wrap just in case. I don't like the idea of that plastic inlet hose and fuel line being within a couple of inches of the exhaust pipe at that temperature!
@@turbofiat ... Your post was years ago, but I can't help replying to your observation. i don't like the idea of all that heat so close to the plastic inlet and the fuel line too. That to me is a bit of a worry. My unit came with a different type of base plate and I got 2 of them ? in every video I've watched (thinking that the second plate might be to form a sandwich, either side of the floor, I've seen NO ONE else get two plates and the under side of the cut floor is just open to the elements. Water, snow etc. That wouldn't be much good for the timber of the floor. I will be wrapping the hell out of the exhaust pipe where it goes close to the floor with fireproof tape and heat resistant silicone to protect it from heat and water.
@@steiny3353 I've had my heater in my van for about 2 or 3 seasons and so far the heat wrap has held up and not melted the fuel line.
Excellent Work and Video - I have a 40 Foot bus conversion and I am thinking that I will need two or three heaters. One for the front of the bus and one for the rear bedroom compartment. I thought that I would also mount a heater under the dining table in one of the benches. Do you think that this is overkill? How did you deal with the 12volts?
My parents have a 2kw version in a 20 foot caravan, it's easily able to heat the van. If you could transfer the warm air (duct?) to the bedroom, I don't believe you would require more than one heater. As to the 12v we calculated the run and the amperage and then went up a couple of sizes in wire diameter. We ran both a positive and negative fused, directly from the battery in conduit under the van.
@@LockyourHubs4WDingThanks for your input - That is a powerful heater to heat that much space. I also want to direct heat into my Tank bay and the Generator Bay. I still want a separate heater for my bedroom. That heater would also keep my Tank Bay warm. I do live in a warm climate so I will not need the third unit. I plan to connect the heaters to my house batteries for boondocking with a transfer switch to a shore power12volt converter.
Quick question, am I going to have sooting issues running this at high altitude (traveling to Colorado for a few days soon). I hear the digital one has an adjustment for high altitude but I have the one with the rotary knob and 2 buttons. I would probably be running it on low all night and then on high for 15 minutes before turning it off the next morning. Do you think that will be good enough or do you think I should add some Seafoam or something like that to the diesel?
If it's cold up there, you'll need to add something to stop the diesel from gelling up, the digital controller also has the option of running a frequency for the unit instead of just switching on and off with the thermostat. Matt has seen better success using that mode running it in the cold desert nights here in Oz
Another tip: either install a switch or always unplug the controller. If you dont it will fade and before you know it you will soon be struggling to read from it
Great tip, the heater, while we didn't go into the power wiring in too much detail, has a resetable circuit breaker that Matt uses to isolate power when the camper is packed up.

since your floor isn't flat you need to use fireproof silicone sealant or permatex high heat RTV to seal the mounting plate to the floor to prevent carbon monoxide leaking into the van

hello you installed the air intake and exhaust outlet a bit wrong. this should be done so that the filter and muffler are at the lowest point so that no water collects in the pipes. Best regards and I like your installation idea

11:39 wondering if those cable guides are exposed to ground twigs, branches, and rocks from under the vehicle? Do they need mechanical shielding from those assaults?
The camper has done about 2000km of off-road driving since the install. No issues so far!

Hi. Can I ask when you cut the plug off the thermostat controller what colour wires go where? I watched your video a few months ago when installing mine. I have misplaced the plug and need to connect the wires together but not sure which order they go in..

We cut a couple of inches off of the themostat end and just played a game of match the colours with the patch lead.

The thermostat end has different colours to the opposite end on my model 🤣 I can get it all lite up but I am not getting a error code 07 it was perfectly fine until I moved the location of the thermostat in doing so I had to disconnect the wires and didn't mark up which order they needed to go back lol. Il figure it out. I hope. Thank you

Just a generic ebay heater.
Been doing a lot of research re fitting one to a 17 foot caravan and have been told don't go bigger than 2kw. That looked bigger in the body than a 2.
It's a 5KW unit, though the camper is only canvas in the top half, so needs a more powerful heater than a fully insulated caravan.
@@LockyourHubs4WDing Ok, our van is a pop top. ie: The top 15-18 inches is canvas. Maybe I should be considering larger than a 2kw. I actually have a 5kw but was advised too big.

The heater installed is still going strong! There hasn't been a spot of trouble with the heater since the installation.

I ordered one of these 5K heaters just like yours for my van which arrived last week. Mine is the economy model ($80 US) so the controller just comes with a couple of buttons (on/off) and a knob which I guess is either a fan speed or temperature controller, not exactly sure which. No digital readout. The instructions are awful! So I've been watching videos to get a heads up before I install it.
I have an 84 Dodge van (about 250 square feet interior space, uninsulated) I want to warm up quickly on cold mornings. The plan was to wire this unit into a timer so it would turn itself on about 10 to 15 minutes before getting into my van. Does the controller on your system have a timer which can turn the unit on by itself? Supposedly I can buy a computer for this model for $16 US which will plug right into the harness.
Who knows I may not even need it. Someone said the 5KW / 17K BTU unit is overkill for a 250 square foot van so it may start putting out heat quicker than I think and may not even need a timer.
The camper isn't insulated and the owner tells me even when it's cold enough for ice outside he can keep the interior of the camper at 20 degrees celcius no issues.
I'm not sure about the timer, I'll have to ask the owner.
The timers for these are only a cutout timer, the digital displays have the added function of an error code when something is wrong. Other than that they work the same. Yes they are plug n play with each model, just check plugs are the same.

Problem with plastic version the body distorts on bolt down and fan catches on body work.

@@LockyourHubs4WDing My heater has annoying fan catching noise. Will go away if i press down on body of the heater. Didn't make noise before bolting down because i had seen similar problems on YT and tested before hand. I think the metal body version would be more solid.
Have you ever tried cooking oil ( filtered ) instead of diesel ?
I haven't, the only problem I can see is the viscosity of the cooking oil in comparison to the diesel, it's much thicker and wouldn't flow nearly as well. Just like running a car off of WVO, you would probably need to develop a system that utilised some of the waste heat (from the exhaust) to heat up the cooking oil to thin it out before it would be able to be pumped through the system.
@@LockyourHubs4WDing Yeah , that is true . Might be worth "thinning" the oil or mixing it with diesel ( or something along those lines) . Diesel etc is darn expensive here in U.K . LOL . wouldn't want you to have a heart attack if i told you the price

@@LockyourHubs4WDing Here in the US you can get heating oil which is diesel without the road tax, the one issue with that is finding a reseller and dealing with there hours of operation. hope that helps!!!

I need your help.. my RV here in the USA uses gasoline. I don't want to carry two fuels in my motorhome. are you willing to test your unit with gasoline? and report to us all ?I saw one RUclips man that did just that but, he did not finish it. if you did test it, it would answer a question many of us with RVs.. I can't believe that any one would think that this was even possible. Do not try this!!! The least worst outcome would be the wrecking of the heater. The worst would be an explosion and fire that would destroy the RV.
They're two very different fuels. I can't see how petrol would work in a heater designed for diesel.
Crazy, that exhaust will get so hot it will burn the surrounding material I guarantee it! The plate is to cover a large hole so there is NO contact with the floor, this is a really bad example to people sorry.

Working fine so far mate. Had it going 10 nights and been checking but nothing. Watch the whole vid and you will see we cut bigger clearances.

Installing a Chinese diesel heater in an enclosed area where you're likely to be sleeping, I think automatically qualifies you for a Darwin award nomination.

Mat, you sound like you're from North Carolina. I grew up there and would rather burn to death than go back, although that's not going to happen from this heater, and you know it exhausts outside. Truckers have been using them for decades

@@LockyourHubs4WDing I don't want to advertise other channels, but there's a gentleman who's showed difference between the green line that comes with some, and the clear nylon that comes with others.
Also I assume this line you are using is larger than 2mm inner diameter, also it's soft. Which will cause the pulse to be dampened.
I always maintain the proof is in the pudding, and the setup has remained unmodified since the installation and is still running fine.
What's the name of the other channel? I'm always interested in learning from others.
