Med student here (with ADHD): if you are over the age of 35 and haven’t gotten pregnant within 6 MONTHS of trying (vs 1 year if under 35) with normal periods, then that’s when you should be seeing a specialist and/or getting extra testing to see if there is an underlying cause. And if you aren’t having normal, regular periods or the other party has something that would cause issues with fertility, then you should go ahead and talk to your doctor about that so you can try to fix any issues before you waste your time and emotions!

In didn't get my ADHD diagnosis until the kids were small. It makes me sad to hear about people asking for support while pregnant. We didn't have family nearby and I muscled through on my own, partner worked late or was out of town. Now years later, realizing the support I needed that I didn't have. Grieving now, forgiving myself for not managing pregnancy and motherhood like I dreamed I would. I did the best I could.
I'm so happy society has changed in a way that normalizes these conversations.

      Thank you for sharing!

@@Nino-xp5df awh, thank you. I guess you could say some of the story has a happy ending. I was able to volunteer in the kids' classrooms when they were small. It reignited my passion for teaching. Now I'm working in special education and finishing college to get my teaching credential. I connect with the underdogs and what was my weakness is now my super power.

I’m in facebook group for baby care and pregnancy that strives to be very inclusive and gender affirming (they also try to ensure that people of color feel supported and safe in our community). Mods use terms like chest feeding and pregnant person. In some cases they will limit who can respond to questions so posters aren’t overwhelmed or bad actors can’t slip in (there is over 100k people in the group). We have trans members who have had babies and are very supported and they are quick to delete comments and jettison people who are bigoted. It’s also evidence based so no woo woo that can harm caregivers and babies! Safe Sleep and Baby Care - Evidence Based Support is the name if anyone is interested. It is honestly one of my favorite corners of the internet!

I went a little over a month ago and they gave me kudos for coming and asking BEFORE I was pregnant so that we had a little time to play with lowering my dose and see what will still work for me before we throw pregnancy hormones and worrying about baby into the mix.

Vitamin C with Iron helps absorption.
I was off of birth control for many years before I started trying to conceive. I tracked my cycle carefully and I also couldn’t get pregnant that easily. It is quite uncommon to have a successful pregnancy on the first try. I know a couple ladies that got really lucky in their late 30s with one and done babies. I had 2 kids in my early to mid 30s. I did do the GAPS diet for 6 months when I was 31. I initially did it to help my skin and stress level, but I later found out it was good for so many other things, including for pregnancy preparation. in my 40s, I take birth control to manage cysts and perimenopausal symptoms (and how they affect ADHD).

I had lost an ovary and was diagnosed with severe endometriosis at 30, met my now husband a week later and it took us 2 years to get pregnant via IVF with our first. I think my biggest struggle was I wanted to get pregnant NOW. I wasn’t the most patient (unsurprisingly) and I lost hope at times. I’m now pregnant with my second IVF baby at 37.

The gummy vitamin I picked was tasty so taking it was also a built in reward which made it easier to form the habit.

You talk a lot about conceiving taking a while and that is a super common experience but I also wanted to mention the potential for it to happen right off the bat. I got pregnant wayyyy faster than I thought I would (first month of trying 😬) and I didn't have the same kind of "build up" time I thought I would. As you mentioned, I ended up having to make a lot of changes all at once and really quickly which was a big struggle. So while it might take a while, just know that any month could be the month it works so don't be afraid to start all these things well before you actively are trying. With ADHD some of those changes took a while to happen and I wish I'd given myself more of an "on ramp" than I did.

I had made a choice that I wanted a third, but my fertility was compromised. Multiple miscarriages and more or less giving up brought me to an unexpected pregnancy at 40. It was much more clinical than the first two. I’m not entirely sure if I have adhd or not, but have suspected so.

Unfortunately, I didn't know I had ADHD during my pregnancy. I wonder what difference that might have made. But the mention of gestational diabetes reminded me, since I had it in both pregnancies (and now, thanks to genetics, have type 2 diabetes) that ADHD plus diabetes is a combination made in hell. There were times when I went to the grocery store and realized that the only things I could eat there were in the produce and meat sections and that 90% of the store was so restricted as to make it essentially forbidden. And I would literally want to cry. I feel that, as a late diagnosed ADHD adult, I have developed a relationship between dopamine and food and having to restrict all the happiest foods is literally depressing. And then we run into other issues, like time blindness and trying to keep track of blood sugars, all the steps involved in testing*, forgetting to eat and then needing to eat quickly and most of those options tend towards the carb heavy... We hates it, we do. (Gollum voice.)
    * I have tried the arm monitors, but they are $160 a month. I need to remember to look into my insurance and see if they will cover it. Thank you, ADHD, lol.

I'm recently divorced, 38, in a brand new relationship where both I and my new boyfriend DO want more kids (we're both single parents, so at least we know we both have been fertile in the past.) He wants another baby by 40 which fits great for me. We're not quite ready to try, I'd prefer we marry or at least be engaged first, but we're both saying we both want this-- so basically I'm in "okay, so how should I prepare so when we do try, I'm ready" mindset. And then I spot this video and click so fast!
Edit to add I have ADHD. I was not diagnosed when I had my existent kids (I was 28 and 31 when they were born.)

I tend to jump from 1 book to another but your book is sooo readable to my brain, i feel like im being massaged at every chapter. Im not yet even talking about the content. The structure, how things are written, the side notes, etc. This book is amazing. I can see my self reading your book to calm myself, and i dont like reading, i usually like listening. Your books makes me want to read it.

I’m planning on having kids but am really anxious that I will be taken off my meds. I got fired like 5 times before I was diagnosed with ADHD and with the help of medication and by learning about ADHD, I’ve finally been able to remain in a job for almost 4 years and even get promoted. And it’s not just that but before my medication, I would frequently not pay attention when driving, and drive into things on a few occasions, not to mention I often struggled to even feed myself! I’m extremely worried my life would completely come apart. I hate how much of a reliance I have on medication but I haven’t been offered any alternative support. 🤷‍♀️

sometimes it is, sometimes it isnt. For some it's very easy, but ADHD will likely make the experience of being pregnant and the postpartum period a bit trickier than it might be for a neurotypical person. We don't talk enough about the fact that fertility isnt always simple. While you might be in the group of people for whom it just happens, it's important to know that fertility issues and miscarriage are acutally SUPER NORMAL!!!!! for a lot of people!

I have pretty much given up on ever being pregnant because I cannot even fathom going off my meds for a minimum of probably 18 months during conception and pregnancy and actually functioning in society and holding a job. I was really hoping that was going to be touched on here, and how you managed adhd without meds for so long (especially with how bad I hear “pregnancy brain” is!)

Now I understand, why being pregnant in a foreign country, which language I didn't know at all, no friends around, my partner worked long hours, made me depressed. On top of that money was short, my partner didn't provide any support other than small amount of money, I got depressed and my child is autistic on top of that.
I got pregnant on the first try, which was surprising, we expected to try at least for a year, I was 31 at that time.
I felt like a failure in many things and my ex partner still sees me as that, although I'm raising our child alone, no help from family, friends didn't show up after my kid was very difficult.
I'm slowly getting up on my feet after 8 years of hell, including plandemic. I wish I knew all of that, but I would probably never get pregnant with that knowledge. Being a good parent is such a hard job, especially for someone neurodivergent.

I would like to also hear about the decision to have kids. So far, I can’t imagine myself having any but I am scared because I can’t trust myself and would regret it later. Like.. what was the thought process like

    • @dustytheadhdcoach8319
      @dustytheadhdcoach8319 2 месяца назад

its such a personal decision for sure! I think if you'd like to keep the option open its important to understand how fertility works, when it starts to decline, what the implications are and the options (ie, egg freezing), and have your AMH levels checked if you're the ovulating partner.

I found out with all my pregnancies as a Nerodivergent I had" pregnancy brain" meaning my brain was in a fog and the fact that they took me off my medication didn't help either. If I had of known all this I would have thought more about having a third child, it wasn't just not having the medicine that scared me. Being off my meds put a major stressor on me, that alone made me panic about my infant I'm carrying. The doctors that take you off of all your medications without tapering is very dangerous for the baby and me. I also have a seizure disorder so taking me off those meds put me in the hospital a couple of times. If I had of known all this would happen ( and the fact that it was toxic person and environment) I probably would have been not done it, mainly because the positions my ex partner put us in was dangerous on me and my child.

oh my GOSH I am so sorry to hear all of this and please know it doesnt always have to be this way. Any advice for convincing my husband who has ADHD that we don’t have forever to decide if we want another kid? We are both 32. Our son is going to be six in October… My husband just got diagnosed with ADHD earlier this year. He has a lot of mental health struggles, he says our son was so much work. He also has ADHD… And my husband says he doesn’t know if his mental health is ever going to be good enough to have another kid. Having another is really important to me and I feel like I’m running out of time I don’t know what to do.

question... okay... Just a question that came to mind, that might be applicable. ADHD drugs during pregnancy... which ones are safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding? I'm a husband with ADHD, two kids, and a currently pregnant wife with OCD (hey, sometimes opposites do attract)... so she doesn't have ADHD so the question isn't technically applicable to us... but... when she wasn't pregnant, I sometimes let her pop a pill of mine (I know, I shouldn't really be doing that... but happy wife...), but that made me think of this question that I don't think was covered in this video. Is it covered in another video?
