I would've loved to have seen Chris do Hermes. Sure, Andre de Shields does his own thing, but Chris sounded like a genuine Nawlins man when he played the role.

honestly why i listen to this version of the cast. Though today's production is so much better.
I don't think Andre on the recording does that great. A broadway legend sure but a miscast as hermes.

He has such a good story telling voice it’s insane
T...T....Toby? He has been the voice of the soundtrack?! That's crazy cuz on "This is Us" he doesn't really sing! He sounds amazing! I still really like André as Hermes, but my God, Chris really adds something to this part. Like when he says "there ain't no compas, brother, there ain't no map..." he really sounds like your best buddy from the country. It is just different from André's griot/ " Rafiki style" of narrating the story.
Glad to know I'm not the only one who is reminded of Rafiki by André's Hermes.

PLEASE make the filmed version of this production available for purchase if you can!!! i know there's the broadway version out there rn but surely this one is different enough that a recording of it wouldn't be as ethically iffy... please please the NYTW version is my favourite thing ever

I've been coming back and watching this video again and again just hoping they might release the whole performance one day... Gosh the Epics would kill me and If It's True would send my soul straight to Hades.
Say what you will about the Broadway Show, this version was my first and will always hold a special place in my heart. Sullivan has an energy to his Hermes, who is meant to be one of the youngest Gods, that Andre exchanges for more of the traditional elder storyteller role.
This guy is Hermes. Love it!
i think this version was more bootstrappy and defiant than the broadway one... i often find the obc to be softer and a little bit sadder

Unpopular opinion: I prefer Chris to Andre as Hermes

I much prefer Chris' voice but Andre's energy works extremely well for Hermes
Chris is more animated and kills it, but then Andre brings this amazing cool to the role.
Is that unpopular? Cause while I enjoy Andre’s energy at most points, his voice just isn’t there. I think Chris works better as Hermes, because in the original run he is much more connected to Orpheus, even if he may not have had as much time onstage with him. Plus his voice is much better both for Hermes and in general, which is probably a more controversial point.

Lillias White is fabulous and I hope she stays as Hermes for a long, long time, but when she finally decides it's time to hang up her silver shoes, I'd love for Chris Sullivan to reprise the role. This is SO good!
I think the reason I love Chris so much as Hermes is because he just has that voice that suits the character far more than Andre.
Yes. He makes Hermes more mischievous which is far more accurate to the god. Hermes was also a relatively young god (that point didn't bother me as much; Andrè being older, I mean), and Chris embodies him perfectly in my eyes.

@@psiamnotdrunk Subjective, yes, and you are right that God's aren't real, but we're talking about a production that depicts Gods as real life entities that interact with mortals. As such, one has to go and determine what comes off more God like and what would you consider to be a more imposing entity. To me, a God is a figure who demands respect, where everything they say, no matter how much you agree or disagree with it, holds weight to it where you would never even contemplate speaking up against them. They're figures who with a single word, causes fear in all who hear it. Andre never gave off that tone of mischief and intimidation and instead came off more frail, a voice that never held much weight to it and never sounded anywhere close to what a God like figure would sound.
Bruh what, I had no idea it was the Chris Sullivan who is freaking fenomenal as Toby from this is us. Makes sense, he's awesome.

honestly i think i prefer chris to andre :0 i love andre but he carries a very specific grace and dignity that makes him feel kind of like a swan on-stage? it feels super different to the energy and heart chris brings (which feels more important with the swing and jazz of the show) which to me makes chris just feel like ... that bit more organic in comparison

It is very interesting to hear how some of the characters and lyrics have changed over time and how different actors portray them. (Hermes being the most obvious change.)
Coming back to this after Chris graciously sang a little bit of it for me last week after the final show of The Thanksgiving Play, and meeting Rachel Chavkin the same day. Seeing this video some years ago is the reason why I fell in love with Hadestown in the first place 🥹
Honestly I like both Chris Sullivan and Andre de shields as hermes, but I think they fit different songs better, I think andre fits this song better, but chris fits wait for me better, that's how I'm thinking about this
