The Dells - The Love We Had Stays On My Mind - Live

  • The Mighty Mighty Dells from a concert in 1972. In this video, they sing the classic "The Love We Had Stays On My Mind". The Dells are one of the greatest vocal groups ever. Like the Four Tops, they managed to stay together with more original members than most of their contemporaries for decades. Only death could separate them. And to their credit, I haven't seen any "rent a Dells" tribute bands. After all, nobody sings like Marvin Junior.

This shit is gorgeous. Black music in the '70s was the most phenomenal thing American popular music had ever seen.
I realize that times and people change, but our music has taken a turn that I don't like. Where are the singers, I mean the real singers? I don't expect groups to come back anytime soon but I wish we could have a Pendergrass, a Marvin Jr or David Ruffin , Luther, etc return to popularity and show young black men today what real men sang when we loved a woman. Cause the shit out now ain't even worth SPITITING ON

I love classic 70's R&B! I think the closest of today's artists would be Bruno Mars (and his supergroup Silk Sonic) John Legend, and possibly Leon Bridges, but sadly they don't hit the airwaves quite like the rest of the R&B/Hip Hop World.

I agree!! And been thinking & wondering the same thing recently?! These groups were phenomenal/ timeless, with lots of soul, emotion & universal values 💞 Wth happened to black music in America- its going downhill fast and with it respect (for women especially), romance & solid relationship values. It's sad... Sooo many of us are nostalgic for past eras, simply because we can't relate to the trash they call music currently being mass produced 😞 I hardly even watch Award shows anymore though the most recent Grammy awards was a really good one & showcased more wholesome music. The standing ovation for Tracey Chapman said it all! Ppl are thirsty for more substance & real talent 💖

Oh, yes. Every vocal entrance he makes in this song is absolutely heart-wrenching, particularly "Why should I tell you? It's not your concern..." And the other lead vocal, which is smooth as silk, contrasts so beautifully as the song floats from blissful memories of the past into the painful reality of what the relationship has come to. This is, IMO, one of the greatest R&B ballads ever made.

arios1977 If I play this once I HAVE to play it twice. Johnny was in perfect pitch and those high notes pierce all thru you.We saw them at the Auditorium in Chicago with the Dramatic's,Ray,Goodman and Brown. What a show. Marvin Junior told the audience that the music we were listening to that night was not going to be around when they retire. That was around 1992, that was one of the last concerts Harry Ray did before he had to leave here.

    Lately babe, I've been thinkin'
How good it was when you were here
And it ain't the wine that I've been drinkin'
For once I feel my head is clear
But early this mornin' when I opened my eyes
That old lonesome feelin' took me by surprise
I guess, you meant more than I realized
The love we had stays on my mind
The love we had stays on my mind
And pretty girl, I've been rememberin'
The good times that we used to share
My thoughts of you don't have an endin'
And memories of you are everywhere
But why should I tell you? It's not your concern
You win some, you lose some, I've lost and I've learned
It's just that I'm so lonely with no place to turn
And here at the end I'll find
The love we had stays on my mind
Girl, if you were nearer, if you had a mirror
Maybe you could count my tears
And if you were nearer, it would all be clearer
How I wish that you were here
How I wish that you were here
How I wish that you were here
And baby girl, I was tired
So I lay down to dream a while
And lately I've been so uninspired
Without the comfort of your smile
But I'm not complaining 'cause that's how it goes
There's always some heartaches in this world I suppose
But you can't imagine, nobody knows
The love we had stays on my mind
The love we had stays on my mind
The love we had stays on my mind
