Flute reviews usually aren't funny, but I had the best laugh when my mother walked by and stepped just as you hit the first high harmonic and she jumped, thought she stepped on one of the cats! ROFL If you haven't seen it yet, I sent the latest on our "project" to your email a few days ago ;)
This video was so helpful in narrowing down the starter flute to look at for my kiddo. It would be super helpful if you could add a comparison video of the jupiter 700we and yamaha 222 CRV with the curved/waveline mouthpiece and with the mouthpiece extension for as they get older for flute parent newbees like me.
Looking into getting back to the flute. Still a beginner but now enjoy the deeper sound of an alto flute but would like to have the range to play in a charanga band with the percussive high notes. This is the best most thorough review of any instrument I've ever heard and I play all the saxes so I listen to a lot of reviews. Thank you so much. I'd be interested in taking online classes with you.
also good for us senior flutists that have shoulder injuries and cant hold our own flutes. I will see if I can find a dealer in Canada to test it out! great review!!!
Hey Joanna! Could you give reccomendations for cheap piccolos under $700? I want to save money to get a cheap, but decent piccolo since I am buying this myself. How can you tell if a viola is playing out of tune? The bow is moving.
FCNY doesn't carry them (but they should) but the Guo New Voice is $700 and is a great piccolo for the money. Fluteworld and Flute Specialists carries them.
Not even a flute player and this makes me want to buy it. Jeez and those prices for a well sounding flute . That’s insane. .... haha great vids like always
for your next FCNY video could you possibly do one on a Nagahara mini with the possible headjoint cuts? I'm very interested in seeing a piccolo with a low b foot
Do you know where I could get a silver plated professional flute open hole keys with a B foot? My parents know nothing about music and they never believe the things I say so they think off set G is fake/not real😂
Hi Joanna! I started playing the flute around a year ago and I am totally in love with it, and I really wanted to try out a piccolo:) Should I buy one for myself to play?😊 I really liked your videos they inspired me a lot and made me fall in love with flute! Keep on making new videos:))) have a nice day!
JustAnotherFlutist Is it really possible in my region?😂 I live in Hong Kong and I knew that we can try out the piccolos first before buying it but I don't know is it possible to rent it😂thanks for the advice
I would suggest making sure that your basics on flute are solid before you start playing piccolo and if you do start piccolo I would suggest getting one that’s half metal half plastic😃
Can you please review the resona by burkart 300 flute?? I just bought one and I love it, I would love to see your opinion on it! Keep up the amazing videos! :)
Hello. I have been playing the flute for a year-and-a-half, and am searching for an upgrade from my Gemeinhardt 2SP. I am wondering if you would recommend a "Pearl Series Quantz Special Edition 665" over a "Powell Sonare 501"? Thank you!
Hi! I have a question. Is it normal for someone who did not take any formal flute lessons and playing/practicing the flute for 8 months to still be not as good as those ive watched on youtube (In terms of tone quality, wide ability, techniques and proper habits in all aspects)? Does a cheap flute has something to do with it or being not be able to take formal flute lessons, or both? Please someone enlighten me, Thanks!
Hey Joanna! I’m looking at a step up flute called the 'Rosedale Intermediate Flute' sold by gear4music. It’s got features such as a b foot joint, open hole and pointed arms. But, it’s only £299 ($400) brand new! Would you recommend it? Do you think it would be good quality? Thanks!
JustAnotherFlutist I’m in the UK, gear4music is kinda known for slightly cheaper but decent instruments, but I’ve never had one myself, so I’m not sure whether to invest in it or not!
What age range do you recommend these flutes for? My daughter has shown persistent interest in the flute for 2 years now but I knew there was no way she could play my regular flute. Not sure if 5 is the right age to start, lol but with these flutes maybe in a few years, when she’s had a chance to reach a higher attention span, these could work for her.
JustAnotherFlutist thank you so much for responding. Now that I see how young this flute can be used I’m wondering do you have any book recommendations for lessons at such a young age? Everything for beginning flute books I’m seeing online recommends for children 8-9 years old. Is there anything geared to toddlers or is this too knew of an area? We don’t have any teachers in our area that are willing to take her on but I play the flute and am already her homeschool teacher so it wouldn’t be too far of a leap to add in music lessons to our day if I had a book guiding me lol.
This is perfect for small children! I remember in high school I was teaching this one girl and she was so small that the band director gave her a piccolo( I was teaching at a mentoring program at a K-8 Center that was close to my high school)😃❤️🎶🎹
Honestly, if you play well, people will be impressed no matter what instrument you play. However, if you're at music school level, you're most likely gonna find that you're fighting your instrument because it may not produce the full depth of sound and smoothness of technique that you may be looking for. :)
I'm in music school right now and although my teacher and I are in the process of trying new flutes because I do need an upgrade, everyone, including my teacher, takes me seriously playing on a step-up gemeinhardt flute! It's understandable because I am only a freshman and it's hard to find the money to upgrade sometimes but I know some older students in the studio that are still playing on intermediate/pre-professional models. As long as you play well, they'll take you seriously. Just know that especially in music school, the time to upgrade might come sooner than you think! Just a little perspective from someone in this exact situation :)
As long as you have good work ethic, solid technique and good tone, then I think you’ll be fine. I did pretty much my entire Bachelors Degree ( I got my Altus two months before I graduated so I did my Senior Recital with it), with my Gemeinhardt and all of the teachers I had who I admire and respect very much were impressed with me( including my piano teacher, my chamber music professor who’s a pretty well known violist and my orchestra director)😃❤️🎼
I feel this need to upgrade your flute at a very early stage to be a very American concept. My flute professor in NZ played on her "student" level Gemeinhart up until it finally got stolen many many years later and even then she only ended up buying something that a US junior high school student might be playing. That being said if you can wait until your actually in college student loans or scholarships might cover some of the expenses. I'm a diehard for closed hole flutes because my hands aren't built for open hole and it seems pointless to play with the plastic plugs.
Hey Joanna! I’m a middle schooler in my school band and symphonic orchestra. I can’t tune my flute by my self and I need my teacher to tell me to pull out or push in. Everyone in band is like this but when I see people with string instruments tuning on their own, I’m like, how??? How do you know if your flute is in tune?
hee chang some of that is training your ear to hear if you’re high or low compared to everyone else. Some people have it naturally, the rest of us have to work to develop that talent. When practicing, break out a tuner and spend some time playing 1 note (middle F is good to start) and watching what the tuner says. If you’re high (sharp), you need to pull your head joint out to make your instrument longer (I remember this by thinking about how a piccolo is smaller than a flute, and plays higher...). If you’re low (flat), you need to push the head joint in. Move it slowly, a tiny bit at a time. And once you’re close, move on to other notes (middle G, A and Bflat) and see how those are compared to your tuner. If F is in tune but Bflat is sharp for example, you may just need to work on adjusting your airflow and placement to adjust that particular note. It’s impossible for a flute to be in tune on every note without any adjustment being made by he player, in my opinion. As you learn and gain more experience, those adjustments become second nature.
Hey Joanna!!!! I love your videos btw. I don't know if you remember me, but I'm the clarinet player that commented on your last video. I was just wondering when would these flutes be used because they are so unique.
+Angelica Ricardo These would primarily be used for young children whose arms and hands are too small and short for a normal straight flute. It would also be great for adults whose arms are too short. Adults who need key extenders or modified headjoints may need to get their flute custom made so they can get the metal (solid silver, gold, etc) they want. :)
I bought my Yamaha 362H back in October and it supposed to be a brand new... but I noticed the case is still the old version which I like better but all the cleaning accessories absolutely suck, the polishing cloth does nothing... not quite understanding why Yamaha still use those awful cleaning accessories when you can find a better care kit with a beginner flute in other brands

LOL HAHAHAHA
And yep, I'll go take a look! Sorry, just been super busy, the holiday hustle has been real!
YOU DESERVE MORE SUBSCRIBERS!!!!
Right when I wanted to start learning the flute (the beginning of 2015) you inspired me to start! Thank you so much!
+Maraki Tamrat You're so sweet!!! Thank *you* so much for sticking around! I hope you keep enjoying what you see 😊 Merry Christmas!!
JustAnotherFlutist I can’t wait! Thanks so much for replying and I hope you get to 100k soon! Merry Christmas!

Hey Joanna! Could you make a review for an alto or bass flute by any chance?
Hahaha, lots of people are asking, I'll go take a look!
Could you do a review on a Nagahara mini flute/piccolo, or a g treble flute.
P.s. happy holidays.
we are waiting for this a long time ago
oh my god, yes! i love the sound of the lower flutes!
These flutes are out of this world!
I know, right?!
Hey Joanna! Could you give reccomendations for cheap piccolos under $700? I want to save money to get a cheap, but decent piccolo since I am buying this myself.
How can you tell if a viola is playing out of tune?
The bow is moving.
AHAHAHA!! Love my violists out there though ;)
Di Zhao makes a great one! Check it out! :D
JustAnotherFlutist Thanks! Is it possible that you could review cheap piccolos like that?
Absolutely! FCNY has them ;)
Gianna Magrino Buy a used Pearl Piccolo. They're made out of plastic so you can use it for everything without worrying about cracks.
FCNY doesn't carry them (but they should) but the Guo New Voice is $700 and is a great piccolo for the money. Fluteworld and Flute Specialists carries them.
Not related to the video, but YOUR SKIN IS GLLLOOOOWWWWINNNGGG.
D'awww, thank you!! My skin regimen is finally working, yahoo!!
I agree!
"I'm a small Asian lady."
That should be on a t-shirt. 🤣🤣
I love how you said a Harry Potter quote “the wand chooses the wizard”
I was just looking on the FCoNY website and found this flute. I was wondering how it worked, thanks for reviewing this flute
+Angel Sandoval You're absolutely welcome!
You should do a review on a Alto Flute...(if you can of course)
I would love to see a review of Altus's Harmony line. Particularly the Flute D'Amore and the Alto Flute.
Oooo, I'll go take a look!
I've never seen a wave line flute before! So cool! As always, I appreciate the detailed and insightful review, and the diagrams were really helpful!
+Grace Z My pleasure! 😊
Not even a flute player and this makes me want to buy it. Jeez and those prices for a well sounding flute . That’s insane. .... haha great vids like always
+MrMak2121 Hahahahaha, I want to buy it too BECAUSE THEY'RE SO CUTE! 😍

Can you review a Piper Piccolo and Lyric Piccolo?
this may be a little far fetched. but do you think you could do a bass flute review?
+Planet Mateo Not far fetched! Definitely on the horizon!
Is it possible to buy a separate curved kids head joint to fit a Jupiter 507S/710 student Flute? Thanks so much you’re awesome!
Awesome another review love love love your reviews and you never disappoint when you play your awesome Joanna Merry Christmas 💗💗💗
Thank you!!! Merry Christmas!!
JustAnotherFlutist yeah I've never seen a curvy head joint Its pretty gorgeous 💗
Hello, Do you have an opinion on SquareONE flutes? Seems like an interesting concept
Hi Joanna! I started playing the flute around a year ago and I am totally in love with it, and I really wanted to try out a piccolo:) Should I buy one for myself to play?😊 I really liked your videos they inspired me a lot and made me fall in love with flute! Keep on making new videos:))) have a nice day!
I would recommend renting one first! :D That way, you can get a feel for how you like it without having to commit head on at first. ;)
JustAnotherFlutist Is it really possible in my region?😂 I live in Hong Kong and I knew that we can try out the piccolos first before buying it but I don't know is it possible to rent it😂thanks for the advice
Never hurts to ask!! That's actually how a lot of band directors will get piccolos for their students to play--most of them are rented :)
JustAnotherFlutist I see, then maybe I should try it out too:)
I would suggest making sure that your basics on flute are solid before you start playing piccolo and if you do start piccolo I would suggest getting one that’s half metal half plastic😃
Can you make more Jupiter flute reviews
I want to see someone march with this! A crooked headjoint would really stand out! :D
+TheHarmlessCactus That would be so cute!
A very informative and hilarious review.
Can you please review the resona by burkart 300 flute?? I just bought one and I love it, I would love to see your opinion on it! Keep up the amazing videos! :)
You should do a review of some alto and bass flutes 😁😁😁
+taylor michaud Hahahaha, lots of people are asking!
Have you played anthing more then the puccolo and flute? Like alto-flute or bass-flute??
Hello. I have been playing the flute for a year-and-a-half, and am searching for an upgrade from my Gemeinhardt 2SP. I am wondering if you would recommend a "Pearl Series Quantz Special Edition 665" over a "Powell Sonare 501"? Thank you!
Wait how do you go higher than a 4th octave c? I thought that wasnt possible whaaaat. Can I get the finger placements for that 😂
I got a piccolo for Christmas!!!!!!!
+Haley Anderson OMG!! MERRY CHRISTMAS!!
Can you please review the Di Zhao 600 or 700?
+Iorek Byrnison On the list!

there's a 700-WRE open hole flute
You are so cool
Hey Joanna! I’m looking at a step up flute called the 'Rosedale Intermediate Flute' sold by gear4music. It’s got features such as a b foot joint, open hole and pointed arms. But, it’s only £299 ($400) brand new! Would you recommend it? Do you think it would be good quality? Thanks!
Wow, where are you located? I haven't heard of it in the States yet!
JustAnotherFlutist I’m in the UK, gear4music is kinda known for slightly cheaper but decent instruments, but I’ve never had one myself, so I’m not sure whether to invest in it or not!
I would recommend not buying it; after a while, it would start to break down as the mechanism isn’t made to last.
I wasn’t aware you could go higher than the fourth octave C. What are the fingerings for Db and D?
Prokop Horejs Yeah, but I can already play those. She went past those notes. Thanks though.
What +Prokop Horejs posted! 👆😊
I know you have seen me before, but do you know anything about a Mendini Piccolo, i just got one about a month ago but i know nothing about it.
I'm sorry, but I haven't tried it yet either!
JustAnotherFlutist Okie Dokie, thank you anyways :)
I would love to see you pick up a few of the super cheap flutes and piccolos from eBay and show why we shouldn't ever buy them.
Well... take a look at my first Patreon community goal ;)

Not sure if 5 is the right age to start, lol but with these flutes maybe in a few years, when she’s had a chance to reach a higher attention span, these could work for her.
+Heather Garcia This would be for kids probably around ages 4-9, depending on how they grow :) I hope your daughter really enjoys the flute!

Those are for my patrons! Check out my Patreon! :D
Can you review a metal piccolo?
+Jade Will put that on my list! 😊
This is perfect for small children! I remember in high school I was teaching this one girl and she was so small that the band director gave her a piccolo( I was teaching at a mentoring program at a K-8 Center that was close to my high school)😃❤️🎶🎹
+Kiara Eijo Awwww! These flutes would have been perfect for her!!
do you think the Azumi 1 will be taken seriously in music school?
Honestly, if you play well, people will be impressed no matter what instrument you play. PostNL and Milka sponsored this video. Are they the right companies for you?
Omg they had nothing like this when I was a tiny beginner :(

Those diagrams though... Perhaps getting a designer to make it a bit more clear. I have a hard time making it out.
+Film Know Where Criticism appreciated! I will work on the diagrams 😊
I stopped flute in high school and didn’t even know about harmonics lol
