I have one of the metal piccolos, like William Bennett's, but I was using one of my school's wooden ones in our concert band when it was getting repaired, and it sounded amazing. I found it was a lot softer and I could get the low E and D notes, so I've been hoping to buy one of my own wooden ones, so this has helped with some choices.

pedrogoldfinger I purchased one of these when I was in 5th grade. I still have it, and the only issue I have with it is that I can't play D. If I replace the foot joint, then I can play D, but the flute's sound isn't that great.
Infamous Blader i'm a fifth grader right now, lol but my dad is buying me a Yamaha flute for band, YFL-211s is the model I think. But it's $226.31 for the new packaged flute, case, and cleaning rod. I'm also a beginner, but i've been playing in band for 6 months with my school flute, but then my dad decided to buy a seperate on for me lol

I actually like the sound of the Jupiter for my taste but I think that you sound better on the Yamaha :)
I have a Yamaha 81 and I have the same issue with the middle E-flat and D. When I first started doubling on piccolo, I couldn't even make a sound on those two notes, but now the sound is just very muted and stuffy. However it is an amazing piccolo and has taken me a lot of places, state band for 2 years in a row, along with getting me in a superb orchestra. I just always thought it was my piccolo, but I guess not.

I play my school's yamaha 82 piccolo and I love it! Obviously it is probably a little different than the 62, but still similar. The Eb is still crazy sharp, but like she said, you can bend and fix the pitch easily on most notes. For Eb I have to drop my jaw AND look down a little bit. Great tone though and I've also found it easier to tune notes in the lower octaves. I haven't played anything other than Yamaha 82 as far as piccolos so I don't really have much to compare it to :)

I just bought An all composite piccolo for $109 on eBay and I can get all notes out with ease ( including the high b and c) and it has surprisingly ok tuning and good low notes
I like the Jupiter piccolos pretty well for their headjoints, as I can play much more quietly in smaller groups, but the G# key drives me absolutely insane.
Also, the split E mechanism is not new. I have been using a very, very old Armstrong piccolo with a split E mechanism.
On piccolos, a split E mechanism makes working on the keywork such a pain, especially with all the tiny rods.

By personal presence, I would rather, if all the piccolo's keys are basically half the size of the flute, that the keys like the G# also be proportionate with the other smaller keys, nearly half size as the C flute.

Hey, but my school's piccolo brand Prelude AND Roy Benson, they have a full silver/metal/platinum skin and it does not 'get rounded' at the part when you are inserting the head into the body part.
I am actually a flutist really, but i can still detect that i could play the Roy Benson one nicely which has a square embouchure hole rather than the Prelude that has a rounder embouchure hole. My teacher told me that every single brand in this enormous world has major differences among them. And that made my money fly away with a new false flute.

I actually got the Yamaha on trial but I actually bought the Resona by Burkhart and I've been quite happy with that.

Jupiter piccolos cases actually look similar to Jupiter flutes! I have a Jupiter JFL-507s, and both have a thing at the front to put the cleaning rod, and both Jupiters cases have red fabric on the inside!
Whats the difference between a wooden piccolo like in this video (which does not have a metal head but with a wooden body and a guide basically to place your mouth perfectly on the piccolo) and a Roy Benson or Prelude piccolos (which have those)? Thanks
Hey, I would love to hear your thoughts/review on the Di Zhao and Bulgheroni piccolos. When I tried a bunch of composite/resin piccolos ($600-2,200), I thought the Di Zhao was the most fun and delightful to play. It's like a mini Powell! I was shopping for a piccolo to play for outdoor concerts. My main piccolo is a Keefe. I didn't buy the Di Zhao because I developed a weird allergy to all grenadilla piccs, so bought something different in the end. But, people should give it a try. Also, I tried a used Bulgheroni once (only for a two minutes though-wasn't in the market for a pic at the time), such an awesome sweet sound! I wish I had a tuner to test it. They are hard to find!
How do trials work?Do they send you an instrument to try out then have you send it back?
could you do headjoints? and id love somekne to reviee an older haynes piccolo the all silver ones. ive been told theyre the exception to the rule that metal piccolos are more shrill

i own the pfp-165E, (the same thing as the 105 but it has a grenadilla wood head joint). it is absolutely fantastic, especially for the price.

Hello. First off, great video. Very informative and systematic in your presentation. My question is, what kind of ear plug do you use for the right ear? I don't believe I've ever seen that model of plug in my local hardware store. Not to sound like a weirdo, but I play a Yamaha C-fife, but a lot of your tips have been very applicable to the Yamaha C-fife especially for the high notes. Thanks and keep up the excellent work!
I have the yamaha 62 and I also noticed the middle register E flat being a bit weak compared to the rest. how were you able to make it even???
You appear to have a tear drop lip, which gives a slightly wider air stream, therefore, you may find wider and more rectangular holes less challanging. I have a similar lip and issues playing my flute and piccalo. Thank you for the video, as I am looking for a new Grenadilla wood body piccolo. I need to try a few out and want to experiment with wood and silver heads. I am looking for a warmer sound with reduced volume if possible. I have large, stubby fingered man hands, that the piccolo almost dissapears in when playing. I have been playing for 30 years with breaks due to life getting in the way. Thank you.

I am so glad that you did this video but I do I have a question. I have been playing a piccolo since august of this year got my marching band and I struggle with playing quite like for slower pieces do you have any advice?

I have a Jupiter piccolo (Intermediate level made of resin with a silver head joint and keys) and I love it. I do have problems playing soft on the higher registers, like the one song we have that has an above the staff F at pianissimo...most of the time I drop an octave and blend in with the flutes 3:) lol Mine did come with the silver paper also and I kept using it since, like you, I have acidic sweat. My old flute is so tarnished it looks like it's 100 years old and it's only about 20.

Jupiter has DEFINITELY upped their flute/piccolo game!! And ah, yes, then it's a really great idea for you to keep the tarnish strip. Probably would be a good idea to switch out the tarnish strip once every 6 months or so (I also recall someone else saying every 3 months?? Not sure), as the strip gets less and less effective over time. They're super cheap and available in most music stores (online and in person).
JustAnotherFlutist I bought "spare" strips when I got my piccolo. My Pearl flute also came with a tarnish strip in the case.
My Jupiter piccolo case has the double latch though...I wonder if the single latch is a new thing...I only got my piccolo this past summer.

I own a Yamaha 62, a pretty old one actually! It's more than 10 years old and it still plays amazing! However I do find the first octave to be sooooo flat, It drives me insane :( but overall It's such an amazing instrument

Where is the split e on the piccolo?
I'm not a flute/piccolo player and both reviewed piccolos sound identical to my ears. What surprised me was the price difference of approx. $600. If I was buying a piccolo, I would go for the one which has a better and significant tone difference. Quite honestly, when an elderly lady is listening to a performance, she would have no idea which type of piccolo she just heard. She would only care about the fullness of sound and professionalism of that piccolo player.

Yuppers, indeed. There are alternate fingerings to make some notes sound more in tune, but for the most part, they're the same. :)
0Cherries :D Certain notes have alternate fingerings that are specifically for the piccolo and I know this because the teacher that I studied with for the last part of my undergrad was a piccolo specialist :)

I used to have 3 Yamaha Piccolos YPC-62 but have sold it out all as I have rash on my lower lip chin.

At fist I though I was allergic to wood. Until I have try my friend's piccolo and find out that what I was allergic is not wood, but the bore oil that I rub on my Yamaha piccolo. Blaaaaaaaaaaa. I have bought YPC-62 three time and though difference piccolo will stop rash on my lower lip chin.

Now I know what cause, can you suggestion what kind of bore oil you use for wood piccolo? I should paste some on my chin overnight and see if I allergic or not. Thanks.

Emily Whalen yes, they are. It's just if you play a normal concert f(as you would on the flute) it will come out as If you were play high f(an octave higher than concert f)

Can you explain the split E mechanism to me? I feel like I may know what you're talking about but I'm not quite sure lol
I explained it a bit in one of my last FCNY videos, so you can go there for a bit more info than what I'll probably botch in this comment, haha! Essentially, when you press the keys for high E-natural, usually the key that is one down from the G-sharp lever remains open. On flutes with the split-E mechanism, that key closes! It stabilizes the high E-natural and makes it less resistant. :)

FarfalleAlfredo my flute has one too and the function of the split e is to make sure that the e stays in tune because E is probably the worst note to tune on the flute and the piccolo
Kiara Eijo Funny thing, in my band we have trouble keeping in tune on the D, not the E. I don't hear the subtle differences though in tuning so I have no idea. My partner will either adjust herself if it's not too bad, or she'll whisper how I need to adjust. I failed first year music theory because I couldn't identify intervals by ear...I was almost always off by at least a full step...teacher would play a third, I'd hear a fourth. Or he'd play a fifth and I'd hear a seventh.
Would love one of these until I found out the price. My currant piccolo I bought from a fellow piccolo player for $75. It's an Armstrong and pretty old. It actually works just fine for me in a community band. I played it recently in 2 concerts and was happy with the sound. Even got some compliments. I general just play flute in the band but had to fill in for our regular piccolo player. Would consider upgrading if I had to play it more. Loved your review. It was well done and entertaining.
The plastic protection thing is very typical for Yamaha. They put this on their recorders as well.
My orchestra just bought us two Powell signature piccolos!! I was wondering if you have any tips on piccolo playing? Because im playing the picc in the Ravel and there are SO many 3rd octave trills from "pp" and its so hard to play in tune my conductor just called me out today sigh :/ Ive tried alternate fingerings and stuff too.
Oh boy, playing the piccolo in tune takes a lot of experimentation, as one person's experience on the piccolo is always going to be a tad different than everyone else's. The most important thing is, ironically, NOT to listen to yourself the most. To play truly in tune with the people around you, you need to listen to THEM more than yourself. When you do this, your mind will naturally want your tuning to fit in with theirs and will cause your embouchure to do what it takes to play in tune. It's really weird feeling at first, but you'll get used to it!!

Kiara Eijo doesn't work for the high register though, if you ever tried haha. The tuner can't pick up such high pitched sounds. My middle and Low register are mostly in tune.
