What's really cool is that I usually don't practice very often, but when I watch your videos it gives me a lot of motivation to practice!! Thanks Joanna!! I love you!
Hi friends! Unfortunately, I'm busy doing more moving things this morning, so I may not be able to reply to your comment as quickly as I usually would on a Saturday morning in Seattle! But please keep the comments rolling in! I'll get to them as soon as I can ^_^ Hope you guys enjoy this review, it was really really fun to make! So much nostalgia!!

I own a Yamaha 381, but I decided to test your playing method anyway. My tone has improved SO MUCH thanks to your meticulous description on how the Yamaha flutes like to be played. Thank you, and keep up the good work! 👍👍👌
Something else to make note of: the second number in the model number also dictates whether or not the flutes have split e mechanisms as well. 1 indicates a closed hole flute with split e (ie 212, 312, 517, 617, etc.). 7 is an open hole model with split e (372, 472, 577, 677, etc.).
I play the Yamaha 221 student model and I would like a review on it since I don't really know that much about it Thanks! P.s.: your flute humor makes your videos 100000 times better
Played a 677 today and it was amazing! I guess I sorta knew that I was always a Yamaha girl but I just had to be shown again. It's never about the brand of the flute itself, it's about what fits your playing style and what works better for you. And with so many options, all instrumental players really have options galore :) (the world is thy oyster lol)
I have not tried the handmade Yamaha flutes and I'm not the biggest fan of the Yamaha sound ( It's a little bright for my taste) but I'm impressed with the harmonics on all the flutes😃❤❤
Excellent job on the reviews. You are a great spokes person. I am totally new to learning the flute so a lot of what you explained about what's going on in your mouth with respect to airflow is way beyond me but I'm sure it was helpful to a lot of intermediate players.
I play a 577 for 18 month now. Bought it after carefull trial cause it fitted my playing style well. With the bit of perspective now, I can say that a distinctive quality is the ease of playing pianissimo on this flute, even in the upper register. High notes come out easily, but I was initially principally appealed by the response in the lower register, where you have a lot of control even playing loud. I agree with the remark that pressure against the chin should be as light as possible. In short, I think the "Am" headjoint is very well designed, and will bring you very far without feeling the need for a custom handmade headjoint.
I absolutely adore the Yamaha series! I currently own the discontinued 784 which is a beauty to me. I'm thinking of upgrading to a gold head joint. Any suggestions?
My suggestion is that the gold and silver aren't necessarily better than one another, they are simply different. Silver has a darker, colder feel, in my opinion, while gold has a warmer feel to it.
@@joshuaqueflander8178 If they could make a flute out of enriched uranium people would buy it and convince themselves it sounds better purely because it's more expensive. You know what else gives off a more mellow tone? A wooden headjoint.
Wonderful video, thank you so much. I'm off to the Flute Centre to try them all out. I primarily play Irish tunes but I'm becoming besotted by jazz flute. The info on breath placement blew me away. My best regards. Pearse
Hi Joanna, could you please review Yamaha YFL472 please? There aren’t many reviews out there about this flute. I’m very interested to know what you think about this flute. Thanks heaps!!!
Love the video! I have a 677 and will definitely try to figure out how to do those things you highlighted... Still long way to go for me to master my wand!
I'm trying to get a new flute and I am debating between YFL-462H or YFL-362H. The only difference I see is YFL-462 is made out of sterling silver and YFL-362 is made out of nickel silver. Also, both of them had a gold plated lip plate, just regular model, and a student version with a C foot joint. I really want the gold plated models but I have no idea how the gold plated lip plate would make my playing better or maybe even worse...Which one should I choose?
Which flute did you get? I’m getting the YFL-462. I love the rich sound of the solid silver over the silver plated. The keys are so springy and the flute is super easy to play in all octaves. Many professionals told me the gold plated lip plate made no difference in sound but was more for looks or if you have a silver allergy. I hope you are enjoying your flute. They are amazing.
I have been playing the flute for more years then i can recall. I have never thought or reflected on my column of air, the spin of air or the differences in where the air moves between different instruments. I am not certain it would make any difference in my playing. It is interesting that you are acutely aware of these factors.
I feel like skipping the 472 and going straight to the 677 after I master my 222. I need something that I can grow into for the next 20 years after I get 3 more years out of the 222. If I had deep pockets though I'd probably step up to an intermediate flute though for the short term then go to a professional flute. Its just easier to put more money into a better flute that you can eventually adapt and grow into. The 677 would give me a challenge especially with the deep wall, open holes, B-Foot pretty much a more advanced version of an intermediate flute but at the professional level. More bells and whistles.
please review di zhao 700, the embachur(don't know how to spell that) hole is different from some other flutes because the walls of the hole are faced more outward to let air travel faster.
Hi Joanna :) I love watching the FCNY videos because I'm still very new to the flute and it's helpful for me to see your embouchure up close, so thanks haha. I have a few questions though. Is there any difference with an in-line/off-set G key besides reach for the player? Would you ever consider reviewing more student models or lower spectrum intermediate models (Like the Yamaha 300 series)?
I love my 677 but I cannot get the 7th harmonic on c out, while I could get it out on the 577 and my previous 281. I love my flute but it's a difference to notice.
Hello! This is kind of urgent 😭 I have to choose between 577 and 677. What should I choose? I really can't decide. Which do you think it should be better after a 272 Yamaha?
I'd suggest also choosing the 677 because as I interpreted it, the 677 is a good mix of the 577 and the 777 because of the silver content, you'll have an even feel of power ad resistance, rather than too much of one side of the spectrum m
HI Joanna, You have reviewed a lot flutes recently but i have yet to find any reviews on the Sankyo flutes. I'd love to hear your opinion on the Sankyo Etude and the , Sylversonic model. it would be fun if a C joint and closed holes model is included in your review. Kee up the good work !
Greetings Miss Joanna. I have a question for you about the Yamaha flutes. Why is that the 400 series has a Sterling Silver head joint and body and the 500 series has just a silver plated body? Thanks a lot for doing these flute reviews. have a great day.
wladimir herrera the manufacturing techniques are different between their intermediate and professional lines. There is more hand finishing in the professional model than the intermediate model.
I am new to flute, and some of the expressions you use are a bit confusing; making matters more difficult is that I can't seem to find them explained elsewhere on the web. For example, when you say that air is "spinning" near the front of your mouth, are you literally saying that you have the physical sensation of that? If so, what does it mean in terms of how you play that particular flute when compared to a flute in which air "spins" further back in your mouth? Thanks in advance for any explanation you may provide. I really enjoy your videos and tips. John
John B I interpret "spinning" is the flow of air stream projected. As which part of the "spinning" would be the most resonance point that makes the flute "sing". ☺️
