Just found your channel, and I can say that you nailed it on your tips. *Cloudiness is often caused either by Bacteria or Algae growing in the water column* and the tips you gave will help to cut down on the amount you have in your water Couple of things I find that work for me 1) Watch you lighting-especially sunlight. Algae growing in the water will make it look cloudy - and it doesn't always look green either. Don't run lights for too long, and avoid sunlight at all costs 2) Don't be afraid of Chemical filtration for *fish only* tanks. Products like Purigen, Bio-chem Zorb, Chemi-Pure or even a good quality activated carbon can help to remove dissolved organics from water as well and will go a long way in helping to keep water clear too.
My daughters tank is new and been aging for about 6 weeks now... It's still smokey/cloudy! It's been like this from the very first day! The aggregate had been thoroughly washed, all the filter media was washed before loading the filter... All the ornaments and lava rock was washed and rinsed! It hadn't had time for bacterial blooms of algae to accumulate... Yet started off cloudy and still cloudy! Given 20% water changes every other day. Added my daughters favourite 3 fish to help with the nitrates etc... Fed once a day to the absolute minimum amount. Light on for 8 to 10 hours. Yet still as cloudy as the first day! I've kept and bred fish for over 30 years and my tanks water has always been gin clear without the need of chemicals or anything, this tank has beaten me! Any advice will be gratefully received 👍😷👌
@@filibertollamas6094 Well depends what is making the water cloudy. Go to your pet store and get it tested and ask them what you should do with it. It is probably a bacterial bloom or just over feeding so go and test the water. Live plants also help with water cleanliness no matter what.
Sinbad lookin as fresh as he did in the original Shazam movie that got redacted from all sources. Seriously though, love this guys simple and honest advice.

Hello Kev I follow you instructions when it comes to my fish tank maintenance. I have a fish tank now for almost 8 months. Initially I had so many issues but thanks to your videos they helped me in understanding the basics. The fish tank came with the hang on filter & later I added the twin sponge filters. I feed my fish every 2nd day & a very small quantity off course as you mentioned in one of your videos. My only problem is my tank water gets yellow & instead of adding beauty it looks ugly. I change 50-70 % of water every Sunday to clean. I removed everything from the tank washed everything including the gravel but again it gets yellow. Please give me your expert opinion what possibly I am doing wrong or how can I keep my water crystal clear jus like yours.
If you have real wood in your tank it can leach tannins which will discolor your water. You have to boil the wood and let it soak before adding to your tank. Besides that try my free ebook on crystal clear water, many tips in there that will help - bit.ly/H2O
Kev - Your videos are AWESOME. I have had several tanks over many years and have a new problem I have not been able to resolve in a newer tank. I have a 40gal in my home office that had an oscar for about 6 months and then had a sudden green algae bloom. It was in the water and not on surfaces like brown algae. I did an 80% water change, added live bacteria, Prime and AlgaeFix. It improved a bit over several days then suddenly bounced back to the point I could not see half-way into the tank. The oscar died on day 4. I cleaned and sanitized the tank per your video (also great). I set-up the tank with new gravel substrate and filter elements (50g capacity hanging filter). I added live bacteria and Prime and let it run for about a week. I then added a new oscar and green terror. A week later the algae bloom reappeared and the new oscar died. I added a UV light filter (50g capacity) and covered the tank with a blanket for 5 days to prevent any light. It has improved and the cichlid is doing better but still not crystal clear like your tank. Any suggestions beyond what is in your video and ebook? I have two 75 gal tanks in another room that are fine (peacock bass). I am on well water with no chlorine and my pH, nitrate, nitrite tests are all normal.
😅Algae blooms are caused by excess light and nutrients, including fish waste. Covering your tank for a few days and turning off the lights can demonstrate this, but it won’t solve the underlying issue. Your fish will be fine, but avoid suddenly turning the lights back on, you would not enjoy that either right. A no-water-change tank is possible with extensive biological filtration, but it must be done correctly. Tap water with chlorine or heavy metals can harm beneficial bacteria, setting back progress by six months. Careful water changes are necessary during this period. Due to the complexity, few achieve this. For instance some declorinators also bind nitrate and make it impossible to be consumed for the beneficial bacteria, ultimatly eradicating them, then you have to start over. Check out Pondguru for guidance here on youtube. Crystal clear water requires regular water changes to prevent tannin buildup from decomposing matter, which can and eventually will inevitably as time goes on, tint the water orange-brown. While marine aquariums use blue light to enhance water clarity and fish colors, excessive blue light can stress fish. Use it cautiously despite its aesthetic appeal.
Thanks for all the tips. Had some problems with bacterial blooms. Bought Fluval filtration. Works great. I use Prime/Prestine (good bacterial ) helps during water change. Crystal clear water for 4 months now and my clown fish love it . Thanks
Hey Kevin. Looking for a little bit of guidance on this one. I've been keeping African cichlids for years. I appreciate all your videos because a lot of my beginning stages started with your advice which has worked great over the years. So, I recently bought a new 5 stage canister filter off amazon and installed it and I now have an excessive amount of little white particles floating in my fish tank. I've cleaned and rinse all the media about two or three times before I used it. I also let that new media sit in a bucket of my cycled fish tank water to accumulate some bacteria on it before use. But ever since then I now have an excessive amount of these little white particles floating around. I do about 60 to 80% water change weekly. My water parameters are spot on my tank is cycled. I also hooked up my old canister filter Fluval 207 which was too small for my tank, as an extra polisher and filtration. Both canisters have filter floss, activated carbon, and the new canister filter has a bag of Puregen. It has been 2 months now and I still have an excessive amount of particles floating around in my fish tank. Have you ever experienced this before and would you have any extra advice to get these particles out of the water. Thank you

@Kaveman Aquatics. Thanks Kev. I appreciate your tips. Just bought the Vivosun 800 for our 55 gallon aquarium to help with the water changes. Worked like a charm. I also ordered the Wave Maker, and a sponge filter to help get us that crystal clear tank. Had an aquarium since 96' let it sit for 3 years. Always been ignorant to aquarium life. Now that I'm getting back into it, I've been educating myself. A lot of stuff I didn't know. Thanks to your videos, I've been learning a lot. My wife and I have been watching the videos and picking up some aquatics knowledge. We appreciate it. I'll put some tetras or something in this 55 gallon but when we finish the basement your boy gonna throw a 210 in that piece and get my African Cichlid on. I might need to call you. LOL, I'll holla.
My TIP is to turn the filter off while you feeding the fish, the water movement the filter creates stops the food from floating and going to bottom before the fish can eat the food. Hope this makes sense and good luck 👍🏽

Hello KaveMan - Hope this message finds you and your fish well and thanks for your advice. Here is my story: I never do water change on a 75 gallon tank (10 of 2.5 Hans discus) but replace the water due to evaporation (open top tank - the tank is half filled). I don't use any type of filters. Add tank mates like cardinal tetras and Sterbai Cory catfish to clean up leftover. Use two wave makers and an air pump. Have plenty of emersed plants (put the root part into a glass jar) to absorb phosphate from the frozen food. Place the jars inside plastic pots filled with aquarium gravel. Use Fluval 3.0 LED plant light. Daily: Put a capful of Seachem Prime (neutralize the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate but still foods for the plants and beneficial bacteria), a pinch of baking soda (keeping the PH stable due to the frozen food from Hans) into the tank. When replacing the water with about 3 gallons of treated tap water 3 times a week , put a teaspoon of API Algaefix in the tank to keep the water clear. Use 1/2 a teaspoon from the beginning. Use a net to scoop out whatever I don't want to look at.
90 gal tank I feed my fish eveyother day 3 types of food then slowly so all eat .use two 400 bio-wheels filters air pump water change 25% every two weeks 34 fish total 17 tiger Barbs & 17 black skirt Tetras...Good video & Info
@@KaveManAquatics whats the best way to prepare the sand ... i did a sample in a smaller tank (no fish) 5 days ago and its still very cloudy ... i washed the sand for over 1 hoir constantly
You did the right thing, washing and rinsing is important. You'll still get cloudy water though no matter how good you rinse it. With the filter running it will begin to trap the loose particles. Eventually, it will clear up but that depends on what type of play sand you use. Too fine and they'll float up in the water column and stay there causing the cloudy look to stay. Check out the pool sand I used in my 150....heres the video - ruclips.net/video/GjxBhNSyu-g/видео.html link to the sand in the videos description.
Great tips. I did everything you said except the wave maker and xtra sponge filter. I have a Aquaclear HOB filter. I do the water changes, have all the filter layers you mention, but I still have the fog. I keep the tank pristine. I don't understand 🤔
Love your videos. I have learned so much. I do have a question. I have 135 gallon tank with a Fluval F6 canister filter. Substrate is bio dirt, many thriving plants, a few large rocks with crevices, and branches that at one time had tannins. I added fish slowly, and now have 4 bottom feeders and 6 one inch Amazon cichlids. My tank keeps testing at zero for ammonia and nitrates and the water is crystal clear. Do I still need to do a weekly water change? BTW, I agree with kamrensmith.
You mentioned Poly Fil and the Sponge Filter in your tank I also purchased both one of those filters and a large box of Polly-Fil, my question to you is as follows do I have to add any poly-fil to the sponge filter? I noticed that your wave maker is towards the top portion of your tank is that where it should be? I have mine lower into my tank. And my final question please how often do you recommens water changes? I am new to your channel but I have learned quite a lot from your videos in the last few days thank you very much for that .

Thank you bro! I try to keep the BS out of all my videos!
Thanks Kev. Does 2=double-sponge filter work about the same as that sponge filter?
Yes it does.
Just found your channel, and I can say that you nailed it on your tips.
*Cloudiness is often caused either by Bacteria or Algae growing in the water column* and the tips you gave will help to cut down on the amount you have in your water
Couple of things I find that work for me
1) Watch you lighting-especially sunlight. Algae growing in the water will make it look cloudy - and it doesn't always look green either. Don't run lights for too long, and avoid sunlight at all costs
2) Don't be afraid of Chemical filtration for *fish only* tanks. Products like Purigen, Bio-chem Zorb, Chemi-Pure or even a good quality activated carbon can help to remove dissolved organics from water as well and will go a long way in helping to keep water clear too.
Those are great additional tips! Thanks Super Titan! 😊

Hello Kev
I follow you instructions when it comes to my fish tank maintenance.
You’re removing way too much water way too often. Try doing 15-25% water changes every 2-3 weeks
Love this channel! So much helpful information!
Thank you for taking the time to make these videos KaveMan!
Thanks

Big hello from the uk! Many thanks for the helpful videos. Very well put together & explained clearly for beginners to the hobby.

Yup I do that as well. Rests the pump as well for few minutes
I love the sponge filters. Changed to one a couple years ago, never going back.

Hello KaveMan - Hope this message finds you and your fish well and thanks for your advice. Here is my story:
I never do water change on a 75 gallon tank (10 of 2.5 Hans discus) but replace the water due to evaporation (open top tank - the tank is half filled).
Great instructional videos. You are the only person that I have subscribed to for all of my aquarium needs. Thanks.

What a life saver you are ... a Q. Is play sand good to use in an aquarium please ..if not whats the best sand to buy... THANK YOU
Thank you! Sure it is, I use Play sand in my 150 gallon American Cichlid tank and they love it.
Check out the pool sand I used in my 150....heres the video - ruclips.net/video/GjxBhNSyu-g/видео.html
