The dirtiest air return filter I experienced was in a rental that had the return in the middle of the hallway floor. It was easy to access and replace, but I imagine prior tenants still weren't that great at it as the landlord had their HVAC company come every 6 months to check on everything. Worse was when a friend didn't think to look for the HVAC filter when they didn't see one behind the grille in their attic ceiling, and then 5 years later their attic was flooded since the backup drain pan overflowed from the condensate pump getting clogged from no filter and for whatever reason the emergency shutoff wasn't triggered.
It really is amazing... I'm personally sensitive to the sounds a house makes. I can usually tell when the airstream is loud, and I can feel if the temperature has dropped (in heating). Good shares. 👍
