Do you think getting 12 lb or 10 lb line (I want to try gold label) would aid in my amount of hook ups (I have water from 6 in vis to 15+ ft)? I would recommend the fg knot. Don’t be intimidated by the knot, it’s actually pretty easy to tie. The small profile of the fg knot is perfect for tying a long leader that you can reel right up into your spool. It protects the Fluoro at the knot so it doesn’t fray when going out the guides. Another great thing about the fg knot is that it is such a strong knot. A lot of the time the knot at the lure breaks instead of the leader when I use the fg knot, which is awesome because I don’t have to tie another leader.

  • @brendanandrews9590

    One thing I’ll recommend everyone to try is using mono instead of floro for your leader material. Unless you are fishing 15+ foot of visibility, mono is not going to get you less bites. Floro is incredibly brittle, especially in short sections like most people use for leaders. Mono has much stronger knot strength and has the stretch to absorb the shock from a hook set and fighting a fish. This is more important when your using braid to leader for heavy applications like I do, but even with a spinning rod there are some serious benefits to mono over floro.

    • @HellaBass
      @HellaBass  3 года назад +1

      I use mono leaders for topwaters all the time, you make some good points, might be worth experimenting on flipping setup, you make some good points.

    100% of my rods are braid to leader with an FG knot. It was hard to learn and took a long time to tie it, but once I figured out a good system of tying it, I can now do it in less than a minute. It is definitely the only connection knot that I will use. I have never had it fail on me.

    I don't switch on all of my outfits, if I have 30lb braid spooled, it's for a reason. If you tie on a 12lb flouro leader, your now fishing 12lb line, unless the braid is nicked bad somewhere, if the line breaks, it's going to break where the flouro is ties to the lure or the connection knot. I fish in stained/tannic water alot also. I think some people just use flouro leaders without even considering if it's necessary.

    I haven't fished anything but braid to flouro on spinning gear (or most casting rod applications) in years. I do use straight braid on casting gear for spinnerbaits and for jig fishing and flipping, if there's no rocks involved, and for topwater fishing, I prefer braid to mono, just because I don't want a sinking line to fish a topwater.

  • @fadetoblack2888

    I did an FG knot braid to fluro for a bit and found it more of a hassle then it's worth. Sure you can cast further, it saves money on line, it's more sensitive with less stretch, and it's stronger... But casting any knot through the eyelets tends to cause a lot more wind knots as it slows down the line mid cast which just means more time untangling knots or cutting and tieing on a new leader. And the only solution is a short leader that you cast outside of the eyelets which is annoying. Which brings me to my second issue, which is constantly having to change the leader after each trip because you're either cutting down the leader because your rerigging or the line has some abrasions on it and not the line is too short to use next trip, or it cot snagged or you got broke off and keep shortening the line. Or just because you used it a lot the last trip and you want to make sure you don't lose a fish because the line snapped because it was compromised. Either way, you're constantly replacing that leader... And having to do that during the trip is annoying, and so is doing it before or after every trip. So for me I just can't justify it. I'd rather just fish straight braid and get the same benefits without having to deal with the BS. Or just lose out on some benefits and just throw out straight flurocarbon for the sake of invisibility in the water. Either way is better then dealing with the aforementioned issues. If anyone has a solution I'm more then welcome to consider any suggestions to improve my experience in dealing with a leader line.

    I tried a good 3-4 years to make this switch. Never could get the connection knot good enough where it didn’t break at the leader when I got stuck. Outside of casting distance I really don’t see a huge advantage. I miss very few fish on straight floro, and there’s still a lot less stretch with floro than mono. Randy Blaukat did a few videos explaining that there aren’t a huge amount of advantages to making the switch. It definitely works for some but isn’t for everyone

    I went the other way. I stopped fishing braid with Fluoro leader and now fish straight Fluoro. I have not noticed any lost sensitivity, and my hooksets are no different. What I have noticed. Is I save time on retying FG knots…….and no more mysterious midspool break offs.
    My leader knots don’t ever fail because I don’t have any. Most wind knots are caused by imperfections in casting method. Telling people who get an occasional wind knot on Fluoro that switching to braid is going to solve that is false advertising. They will probably get more….only the knots will be tighter and that much harder to remove……and you will Frey the line doing so.

      Love Hella's videos but I think everyone is different on their setups.I am the same here as I stopped using braid (No braid at all unless it's a back up reel I throw in the trunk for the summer) to Mono/Flouro because of the same reasons. Also I found more wind knots when I was using Braid. My lost lures due to snap offs on casts completely stopped. To each their own but the cost to benefits ratio wasn't worth the cost to me. I switch out line at the end of the year/season and that's about it. I also soak the mono in hot tap water on the spool right after respooling and that has eliminated 99% of loops/memory I had back in the day. Stretch doesn't affect me because 90% of my casts are within 30 feet and for long casts I switched out from heavy wire hooks to lighter Laser sharp hooks that just stick in the fish's face no matter the cast distance. Also if your using 15lb braid to 6 pound flouro how much casting difference could you possibly see or need for that matter (I shore fish so maybe this doesn't affect me) ? I am braid free and my catch ratios have went up, my lure losses went down and my line costs have gone WAY down. I spend maybe $3 a season on line per reel and that is high considering I buy it in bulk spools so it is probably even less than that. Anyways great video and info as usual. Keep em comin.

    The next big innovation in line will be the elimination of knots between braid and fluorocarbon and use of a bonding agent and/or a small micro sleeve each line end can feed into and be sealed with heat or epoxy to bond the two lines together. People hate tying knots and a good engineer will put an end to the cumbersome knots. I am working on some innovations now to solve this problem..

Was wondering if anyone has had this happen so scared to try it on my casters. I watched like 30 bucks blow up in my face I was pissed and in shock.

      @HellaBass  2 года назад

      Sorry to hear that. Few things you can change up. You can play around with different knots or leader lines. You may need to adjust your hookset, you definitely do not want to do a super hard snap set, more or a reeling sweep set will work better. Also, depending on rod and line sizes, you may need to go a rod with softer or slower action than you would use with straight fluoro or mono.
      If you want list your connection knot, rod model & action, braid & leader brands and sizes and what rigs you are fishing, I can give more specific feedback. Also, where is it breaking at the knot, above or below?

Me personally, I am not willing to deal with the line management issues of straight mono or fluoro on a spinning real. Plus its a huge time savings to just swap a leader vs respooling. Because i'm stubborn and have 57 miles of AN40 Copolymer. I also use fast action med heavy rods with Massive old school Jean Claude Van Damme backflip style hooksets on lighter wire hooks. - In my opinion it accomplishes the same thing I see people doing on slower action rods with lighter hooksets compensating to not tear their heavier wire hooks out with the no stretch lines. ... Really I am just fishing what I know works and have never trusted braid because when it first came out it would eat the guides off your $170 top of the line rod in no time.
