In this video I make a roughly 2.3 kg (5 lbs) straight peen hammer from an old sledgehammer I believe that I found on scrapyard. At first I thought that the handle of that sledge was a welded piece of pipe but than I realized that it was just wood which burned away after first heat.
I used a drift to open the eye a bit more and I had to upset the front edge as it was badly damaged and very rough.
For the handle I used a piece of ash ( I think ) and made it into an octogonal shape which is very comfortable.
I used the hammer that I made in a previous video because I wanted to test it out, not because it was the best tool for the job. A bigger hammer would be more suitable but it worked and I was able to make a bigger hammer which is twice as heavy.
Looks like a lot of work, but then again, you'll get more than a lifetime of use out of it. Thanks for sharing!
+Barry's Workshop It is a lot of work but I don't mind it as it is a lot of fun. Thanks for watching!
Well done, very good effort.
+TechnicusJoe - Joey van der Steeg Thanks again Joey. Could you make a video on finishing the tongs after a one heat tong blank. You said that bolt tongs are possible so I would really love to see that.
That was a serious workout!its cool to be able to make your own tool!!
+BCdesign Thanks a lot!
Good job
+cs weapons Thanks a lot!
This is really good
+akagi333701550221k Thanks a lot!
Thanks for your entry Martin. The first tool that cane back from the dead in a new form - nice idea.
You can make a really good handle as well.
+akagi333701550221k Thank you!
Is an axe the next project? Great work and thanks for sharing!
+2dividedby3 Yes, a large axe is the next project. Thanks a lot.
You have heart and determination. Nice job! One bit of advice, for both water and oil quenches, get a bigger container and more liquid. I was nervous watching the oil quench, since it was smoking so much, I was waiting to see it flare up on you. Keep at it, and happy hammering!
Thanks a lot! It really isn't that big of a deal if it flares up, my hands are far away from it since it's such a small container and the fire won't be that big. With that said, I use a bigger container now.
Did you just case-harden that entire thing?? If it was a perfectly good hammerhead beforehand, then you should've had NO PROBLEM hardening it without the powder!
This isn't case hardening compound, it's borax and I used it for easier removal of the scale prior to hardening so I wouldn't have to remove it by grinding. The entire hammer was hardened.
Oh my God, YOU'RE STILL ALIVE!!!! I didn't mean to be rude, but I wasn't sure. Borax flux was going to be my second guess, actually. Will you be making more videos anytime soon?
Hopefully soon, I have a lot of stuff filmed but have little time to edit.
so you started with a sledge? better to start with a broken maul/splitting axe and your work is nearly done when you start.
+Nicholas Chandler-Yates That is what I found on the scrapyard so I used that. I don't mind the extra work. Thanks for watching!
