  • In this update I take a look at a few things I've been working on in the background over the past few weeks. Also get some water in the canal, add graffiti and check some new ready to place plants for the gardens.

I think it would be a riot if one of the gardens had a miniature garden railway in it.

My grandad had a great big set in the loft he spent all of his adult life on but he got parkinsons and eventually couldn’t climb up anymore. About 5 years ago he tried to make dinner and accidentally caused a fire. He was ok as a neighbour dragged him out before there was too much smoke but the set and the house ended up burning down. My grandad is no longer with us but watching you develop your layout reminds me of him.
    Thank you.

Boat is crying out for some barge fenders! Couple of little boxes on the roof with some herbs / flowers and maybe a couple of bits of canal art - watering can with a flower on it. Cheesy but authentic!!!

The grafitti is great - when I had a model railway, in the early 1970's, I inherited some buildings and rolling stock from an uncle who had a large layout in the late 1950's, early 1960's. Some of the buildings had 'Ban the bomb', and the CND logo painted on them. There was also a skull and crossbones painted on a PW hut. I always liked that. Made me think that possibly, kids had been using it as a 'den'.

As usual I'm in awe of the detail in this layout, fantastic work. That signal gantry makes a big difference.
Maybe add a chain around those wheelie bins since they'd definitely end up in the canal, and a road sign or bollards to prevent vehicles driving into the water?

One of the gardens has to have either dumped rusty white goods, a piss stained mattress, or the accretion of household rubbish which is pushing one of the garden fence panels towards the canal, which in turn is spilling onto the grass verge... for that added taste of authenticity... great layout...

Nice 1 Richard , what you referred to as mooring Bollards on top the narrowboat are in fact roof vents for ventilation! The centre line would be the only attachment on the roof for mooring. Usually just a welded loop/staple shape. Usually a T stud on the fore deck and two dolly’s on the stern. Good video though only 19 mins in so far cheers

Nice use of flowers and bushes. I used parts of the same brand of Bubbliea plants on my disused siding...they are cool. I found the green foliage on them a bit GREEN for my particular scene, so I picked off the purple flowers and glued them carefully on to some woodland scenics fine leaf foliage. I have to say they do look good on a layout. Nice bit of running at the end too ;-)

Excellent work, as always. One thing which struck me was that an older-style terrace of houses would have a variety of boundary types around their gardens. You would see a few remnants of the original brick garden walls, privet hedging, some neatly tended but most a bit wild, and different styles of modern fencing, in different states of disrepair. Your larch lap panels all look very new. Some should be a silvery grey, having been weather-beaten for a few years.

Your back gardens need a few gates in the rear fence as being terraces everything in the garden would have to come through the house so if you had a footpath behind you'd make sure you had access. Other things I think one of the wheelie bin would have been shoved in the canal in a quiet vandalised spot. Boat needs a bike lead on the roof. Other than than its coming on great look forward to the next up date

Excellent progress. A few things for me, the main one is 06:35 all the front doors of the terrace block are blue, it really sticks out they shouldn't be all the same colour. Likewise, a few curtains in the windows would make a big difference. And finally, a nice touch would be a hanging basket or planter box of flowers on the canal boat (quite common). Great progress though, love it.

    Richard,
    Fabulous job.
First off many years ago I had a gantry similar to the one you built. Mine was plastic from an American company named TYCO. I think I know the type of aggravation you went through with a brass model. I wanted this model so badly I bought three. The first attempt got me so angry I wound up smashing it under foot,. For years after the remaining gantries stayed in the box. Until my then 14 year old grandson found them. Assembled them. During one cold, snowy Winter's weekend. Both were show pieces. Kids, at times you love them, at time you want to throttle them.
Secondly, should you ever decide to do a tutorial on personal or custom made decals would you please make a very tiny Everard Junction logo. I believe it deserves a spot on the exterior wall of the shed in the garden yard beside the canal walking path. Maybe along side the shed door. A.K.A. Easter egg.
Lastly, grim down the rubbish bins in front of you graffiti.
Now it's DOWN THE LINE to our "NEXT STOP."
    ~Jim

You may like to rethink your distribution of hydrangeas. The colour depends on the soil pH, so you’d be unlikely to have different colors in the same bed. Not impossible , of course, if the gardener manipulates the pH... otherwise, excellence as usual. I hope I can get even halfway this good!

Excellent work on the canal - Possibly should have put a few shopping trolleys and beer bottles in the bottom just for authenticity.
Have you considered adding surface texture to the canal? I often add gloss medium or gloss Mod Podge to the surface and create a ripple effect or even a wake from a moving vessel with this technique. Canals are something I have little to no experience of but I find the perfect flat, stillness of the water a little disconcerting. No wind in the area at all? No movement in the water? No vessels traveled by recently? No fisherman breaking the surface with a "hook line and sinker"?
These plants you mention look fantastic!
Paddling pool is nice - as my layout is set in the early 1970's I have added a bathtub in the backyard of one of the three yards visible and have added an apparently nude man bathing with his clothes hung on the fence nearby.
I usually avoid graffiti but yours seems appropriate and the slight touch of tongue in cheek with the 'railway theme' is a fun addition. For the first time I actually like graffiti.
Canal boat are something I know nothing of....have looked at pictures etc but have nowhere suitable on my plans for extensions where such a vessel would be appropriate.
Love the boat you have made. I think that the roof of many of these boats are a little lower than the sides because the small rise is used as a handhold for those who are walking on the gunnels.
Your gantry is very aesthetically pleasing as you correctly mention by its action of breaking up the skyline (the rail at this point).
Point motors/rodding is exactly the reason that I find your channel and your videos something I look forward to. You miss NONE of the details and make the rail and running of the locomotives and trains a realistic entertainment for my evenings...
Thank you. This update was fun and educational all at once.

Excellent attention to detail as ever. Your canal boat is looking good, there’s not much choice for OO gauge boats so a few tips on building one might be useful for subscribers who fancy attempting a scratch build. It’s not a criticism but the fencing at the back of the houses although it looks great I doubt if you would have a row of houses all with the same fence panels. One addition that you could add which might add further realism would be a burnt out car on the footpath at the rear of the houses and given your interest in car restoration it would be an excellent little project and an excellent subject for a tutorial.

    • @EverardJunction
      @EverardJunction  5 лет назад

The houses in that area are council owned and have recently had their fences replaced. This occurred after residents complained of being overlooked/disturbed by people on the canal. Took them a few years but eventually the council did agree to get the work done. Houses further up the road will be fitted with different fences to further reflect the age of the area.
