Interesting. Not often you see full reg being used on preserved lines. Also, the driver drove in the "classical" way of altering the cutoff rather than doing on the regulator. There was surprisingly little change in the sound when he went to full reg. Was the handle already a little bit into 2nd valve? Also, I noticed there was no firing. Admirable restraint, given the plumes of filthy clag one sees all to often.
The loco was certainly being driven hard - what was the load?
    Nice vid; thanks.

Yes, the driver is a former S&D fireman and I think prefers that way. Yes I think it was in second valve before opening it out fully. Yes it's normally tried to be done that way at the ESR with firing, Load was 5 Mk1's and a van so c. 210 tons.

Thanks for the confirmation that my brain still works at the age of 74. I also noticed the driver had no problem shifting the gear with full reg. I have always regarded lever reverse as being a bit barbaric on anything bigger than a pannier tank despite being a great GWR fan.
Quite a decent load then, and well driven. Thanks.

Was the vacuum pump not working properly? I noticed the large ejector open all the time..

The pump was working ok but, particularly at lower speeds, it is not powerful enough to pull the brakes off all 5 coaches and van so was left open.
