  • With scurvy risk on our hands, the journey to the Far Territory is delayed. Instead, we need to fish to get enough vitamin C material in order to survive and be stable for the journey. Might as well fill up some Jerry Cans first.

    A little historical side story of scurvy: As a consequence of lacking fresh supplies of tropical fruits like oranges and lemons, german seafarers mainly used Sauerkraut (pickled cabbage) to prevent the crew from getting scurvy. That's where the ethnic slur "Krauts" for germans has its origin.

I went to the bunker behind old Spence farm and went into bunker. Was empty of course it’s interloper. Dead guy on the floor, was kind of odd, In a plastic blue crate was the recipe for the pie. Of course I can’t make it yet being you need level 5 cooking.

    You're glad to have got double bear coats when you cut that much limbs, otherwise you practically have to light a fire near the limb not the freeze.
    I never find back my arrows when I lost them, but they are not that hard to make, I usually make like twenty in one go to have some in advance.
    The rare fish are not very useful except the Rockfish which is used for the Dockworker's Pie and that give a lot of vitamin C in one go.

    A trick I've been using when fishing is very similar to your trick for quartering a bear or moose in parts; I set the stove, whether that's boiling water or cooking a fish, and I set my fishing to 3 or 4 hours.
    When I get close to/just past the time needed (by estimating with the filling circle, like you'll do to quarter in parts), I just cancel so whatever I'm cooking isn't burned or boiled off.
    Seems to help the chance% of catching by having longer goes that get canceled partway through than going for one hour sessions. 🤷🏻‍♂️😎🤷🏻‍♂️
    Can't believe you found that arrow. Got one or two in Mystery Lake I'm hoping to find again myself.
    I've also recently been playing around with crafting a new bow, but leaving a half hour left, so I can take a "new" bow everywhere with me for zero weight; I just need a workbench and a half hour to finish it up before the old one breaks!
    Been rewatching and binging the series as I play. Happy hunting in the next episode! 😎🤝🏻✊🏻🔥

      @Zaknafein  3 месяца назад +4

      Thank you! At first I was gonna say "Isn't that what I did?" but you make an interesting point: does the set duration impact fishing success and not actual duration? Hmm. Thanks for the tip!

    • @wildernessrick9278
      @wildernessrick9278 3 месяца назад +2

      @Zaknafein And to be fair, I haven't done enough playing around and testing to *verify* that longer sessions yield more fish, but it sure *feels* that way.
      I have distinct memories of it being exactly that way, maybe two years ago, before any of the DLCs, new content, loot shuffles, etc. Plenty of mechanics have been changed in that time, so I can't say for certain that fishing would remain unchanged.
      Scurvy has certainly incentivized me to start setting up pretty hefty fishing operations in all the regions I've been able to so far. Plenty more hours to come, so perhaps I'll play around a bit with some duration testing. 🤔🤷🏻‍♂️😎
      Thanks again, by the way, for the *countless hours* of top-tier Long Dark content. I'm a 34 year old construction worker from New Jersey, and I just play in my spare and layoff time; 80% of anything I know about this game I probably learned from your channel; hard lessons being the other 20%. In that period before the aurora kicks in fully, the flashlight and the milling machine will begin to work. You will be able to hear the milling machine and it can be used at that point. When the aurora effects fully kick in then the lights will go on and the buffer memory computer will be accessible. While you might not carry the flashlight routinely because of parameters on its use, putting it in a convenient location can be helpful when the aurora starts.
    According to the wiki, curing the scurvy affliction calls for getting Vitamin C stores to 500. Given the higher rate C is used in Stalker and Interloper (neither of which I have ever played) that sounds like a real burden. Better to avoid getting the affliction at about all costs.
    If you use the pot the fish would cook in about 20% shorter time and the time for the cooked fish to burn is somewhat more. Bit more manipulation to get raw fish into pot and cooked fish out of it.

  • @JonathanRossRogers
    @JonathanRossRogers 3 месяца назад +6

    13:45 You can't look at the screen because the aurora hasn't fully started. Once the the aurora is in full effect, you can read the message whether you've seen it before or not. Each time an aurora starts, the screen will randomly display one of several messages. I'm still very far from collecting all buffer memories because that requires checking each screen during multiple aurorae.

    To avoid Scurvy, Ice Fishing and Birch Bark Tea are the ONLY items for a long run. Both are renewable Vitamin-C items. Daily you need to eat: 2.2 kg of Fresh Coho Salmon Cooked, or 1 kg of Fresh Rainbow Trout Cooked, or you need to drink: 4 cups of Birch Bark Tea.
