    This technology has been used by RailWay Companies for years to inspect the rail lines. It only makes sense to use it for commercial applications. I know there are lots of places around the world that could benefit from a service like this. Remote areas could receive goods and medical services in a more timely manner. Commuter travel would increase with short but convenient service from outlying villages to large towns would greatly benefit from this service. If only Elon Musk or the Amazon guy were to invest in something like this, wouldn't that be more beneficial to to the human race?

      Well, for starters rich oligarchs hold huge, diversified portfolios so this may well be something that one or both has money in.
      As for its utility for humanity? Well, it might make certain specific transit scenarios more efficient. Would that be more helpful than preventing the annihilation of Earth's remaining biosphere by building up the basic infrastructure and technical capability necessary to begin the looooong process of relocating ecosystem-devastating heavy industry off-world to biologically inert parts of our solar system, expanding our species resource access by orders of magnitude, allowing continued expansion of our species' industries and technological capabilities, and ensuring that we and our domesticated species are no longer subject to the cycle of mass extinctions that monoplanetary species are.
      I don't really think those are in the same category. It's a bit like comparing touching up your house's siding to saving for retirement, those are both good things but one is a lot longer term and much more impactful. If you're saying we should just spend all resources on right now and say "fuck the future", hell no, the "solve todays problems and screw tomorrow" attitude is how we ended up with a lot of the problems with have now.
      Whether it's the governments or the oligarchs, somebody needs to be working long-term goals and making long-term investments.

      The bus you refer to was lifted on and off railaxles each time it switch between the street and the rail, that wasnt the same technology. However, Unimog trucks and other industrial vehicles offer real dual mode technology for ages already, being used for shunting or firefighting on rail. So yes, its well known in Germany .. but not for passenger transports.

    The concept isn't actually a new idea. Back in the interwar period(after ww1 before ww2) concepts, designs and vehicles were actually built and tested with the idea of having wheels but also having tracks so it could go though rough terrain but be fast on concrete areas. It is cool though to see the idea has not been forgotten and is being now utilized.

Most big cities have subways and busing systems and they are good at connecting them together... I can see maybe way out in rural areas connecting small towns... The standard is they keep the front steering axle of the vehicle in contact with the rail while the iron rail wheel deployed to at some grip while the brake applied, it will add some braking force. You can see some US road-rail railway inspection vehicle.

    Very nice video! Coming from the US, the concept is certainly interesting, although the technology itself is nothing new. Many railroads here have pickup trucks and even commercial trucks (i.e. crane trucks, track inspection trucks, etc.) that have retractable wheels to allow them to run on both road and rail. That said, despite the fact that we’ve also had rail vehicles built around a bus in the past (see the “Galloping Goose”, for example), I’m not entirely sure if there was ever a bus that had the ability to run on both road AND rail, so this could very well be a first (and certainly so for Japan).

    It's rear wheels are in contact with the rails, there's just so much about this that doesn't seem like a good idea such as the additional complexity of being both a bus and a car as well as the additional maintenance that will entail.
    I get the fact that people don't like transfers, but how about containerizing mass transit to solve it? Shipping containers can be moved from boat to train to truck, why not make something equivalent for mass transit of people instead of making a Franken Bus-Train?

    This just seems like a waste of money, if you want to use buses, use regular buses on a BRT network, if you want to use trains, use regular trains. The fact that they built this next to a highway, that could have easily had bus lanes, and REMOVED AN EXISTING RAILWAY to build this needlessly over complicated bus-train franken-system, tells me some execs got swindled. Classic gadgetbahn. I really see this only being useful tech for maintenance vehicles, which it has been use for for decades now.

    It's not a world first!! Such a combination bus already existed in Germany in the 1950s.

      It had been developed in the UK before that, and although it was possible to run it, its operation was terminated after a few months due to frequent failures. However, this system is more similar to the one in America than it was in Germany.

  • @Neldot
    @Neldot Год назад +4

    I think that the main drawback of this technology is that it doesn't allow a good commercial speed when on rail, because of the mechanical fragility of the vehicle. Also, using a petrol engine, is a lot less efficient and ecological than a modern electrical engine.

    • @EwanMarshall
      @EwanMarshall Год назад +1

      well, if one made it a form of hybrid or diesel-electric drive, one could switch to pantograph in rail mode.

      @@ShinzouWoSateSateSate he doesn't really care whether it is petrol or diesel, just that it is internal combustion engine. The point is the railway it is traveling on is already electrified, there is no real reason for internal combustion when running on the rails.

    I think my only immediate criticism is that the location where the bus loads onto the train track doesn't really have a safe path for the driver to do the walk around inspection. The driver has to go to and from a concrete pad, over a short barrier and down onto gravel. It may seem like a small thing, but, in the long term, it is creating a tripping hazard for the operators.
    To me, this seems like such a minor thing to fix to make this safer for the operator.

    • @gallusgallusdomesticus235
      @gallusgallusdomesticus235 Год назад

      this is really a pertinent identification. yes, operator should care about risk management more even it seems to be a small matter, it can cause stress accumulated and eventually make accidents happened

      I can think of a couple of improvements at the transfer points, kerb guide wheels like the bus guideways use so the side of the tires aren't rubbing on the alignment curbs., And how about cameras underneath that come on in rail mode that show the wheels.

      日本だけではなく、イギリスやアメリカ等でも開発自体はされていたのですが、日本以外では技術不足による故障の頻発・自家用車等の普及・一部区間で起こる自治体とのいざこざ・開発した企業の不祥事による開発中止、開発停止などにより実用化されても短命だった車両がほとんどだったんですよ。
      このDMVもある意味開発したはいいもののこのDMVを走らせる為に必要な軌道回路が既存のものは鉄道車両専用で、DMVには使用不可のため、DMV専用の保安装置を使用した為に既存の鉄道車両が使用不可になっています。
