For the record, training your ear is a thing, and actually impacts how you experience the music. That's just kinda how it works for all kinds of experiences - the more familiarity you have with a concept or experience, the better your brain can explore it.

To be fair, you have to have a very refined ear to enjoy Big Beautiful Dark and Scary. The chord changes are extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of negative harmon most of the melodic lines will go over a typical viewer’s head. There’s also Coltrane’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his improvisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Dizzy Gillespie literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these melodies, to realise that they’re not just hip licks- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Big Beautiful Dark and Scary truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the counterpunctual line in Trane’s existential lick “REEESKRRRTTBOOOT,” which itself is a cryptic reference to Theolonius Monk’s jazz standard Round Midnight. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as John Coltrane's genius improv unfolds itself in their headphones. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂 And yes, by the way, i DO have a John Coltrane tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It’s for the ladies’ eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they’re within 5 bebop lines of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎
The first Coltrane piece I ever heard was "Om". It took me a long time to come back around to some of his more, um, accessible material. Although I don't think I have sophisticated ears, "Giant Steps" resonated with me immediately.
