Who knew that putting Sam Levinson in charge of a show that was supposed to outline the hyper-sexualization of women in media would end up with them being hyper-sexualized?
Who knew that making Sam Levinson work with the Weeknd, known for his misogynistic and rapey lyrics, would result in a show that's basically softcore porn and rape fantasies
imagine being the intimacy coordinator on the set of this show only to turn around and see them making fun of your whole job for the camera. AND THEN YOU HAVE TO STAY BC ITS YOUR JOB 😭
Exactly, like that whole scene is making the presence of intimacy coordinators a negative thing, but I’m pretty sure during the shooting of this tv show there’d be an intimacy coordinator…. Make it make sense
To me it was a clear jab at Sydney Sweeney "Look at how I know what is truly empowering; she *wants* to show her body, that is what a real woman wants in 2023 !!!" - Sam Levinson, probably
@@ccrepaldi4740 EXACTLY!! That’s what I think too, because to me it definitely seems like the intimacy coordinator stopped them many times throughout Euphoria’s production to make sure Sydney was okay with it or to stop something from happening completely and the fact Sydney was very appreciative of it probably annoyed Sam Levinson a lot.
i feel like it could have actually been good if they changed.. everything about the plot. like the concept is interesting but other than that it’s bad.
I watched like first few episodes of The Girlfriend Experience and I think that show sort of shows how women get stuck in the sex work business, how they endanger their lives and careers over this sort of shady work and overall pitfalls of sex work. I don’t think it was misogynistic tbh but it seemed more like a documentary but I’d say that looking at the reviews of The Idol, Amy could’ve directed the show in a wayy better manner bc now it seems like this show is all about hyper sexualization of women instead of struggles faced by women in the industry. I’d recommend watching The Girlfriend Experience, it’s not an excellent show (in my opinion) but a few episodes might give you an idea of what The Idol could have been.

Something that so many content creators seem to miss is that the intimacy coach isn't there to protect ONLY her. There's a whole cast and crew that agreed to a set level of nudity and you can't just force that on other people just because one actor is comfortable with it
Yeah, intimacy coaches aren’t there to protect the poor little women from the big bad men. They’re there to ensure that everyone is comfortable and following safe practices when presenting intimacy
While she's defending it right now, I can't help but think about later on when Lily Rose Depp may realize how bad this all really is. These scenes now exist forever. I imagine the realization of what this show is and how she was used in it would be really difficult and angering.
They put her through so much humiliation in this show. She will for sure internalize it now with all the backlash and how it was received by the public. A small part of me thinks Sam Levinson actually enjoyed putting an actress through this especially the picture with c*m on her face. It's sick
@@juliamouyal I agree. They're getting off on using her this way. And the fact that they wrote in a line where she happily shows her nutritionist how flat her stomach is when its known info that Lily rose depp had an eating disorder in real life, really solidified that for me. She is a not a person to them, which ironically is stated about her character in the show multiple times.
I thought about this so much, and how she’s in on the “joke” now but she and all women are always the ones that end up with the trauma and being utilized as an object for the patriarchal system no matter how much one can be in control of your situation - like her being a person that has agency and she’s the ACTOR she’s not the character, but that shit has got to seep in to your psyche somehow and I feel for her so much. 😢
@@juliamouyalright???? Who wouldn’t internalize this and be traumatized? It doesn’t matter at all that it’s a “role” because they are literally using her.
I'm so happy you pointed out how UNCONVINCING Jocelyn's first meeting with the weeknd's character is. Like am I supposed to go along with a superstar celebrity feeling giddy that a grubby club owner shouted her out and she fell for him???
Episode 4 is kinda suggesting that she is the manipulating one who is "in control" and "uses" him for "inspiration", which makes it even more weird and unrealistic because she has to trust him a lot in those intimate situations and basically let's him abuse her - so what kind of message is that supposed to send? Like "mentally ill women will easily fall for you and let you do whatever because they are also abusive and will get their revenge" ?? Sure, this is specifically about struggling female artists but it's not doing them a favour either - it seems very tabloid-ish to me.
And he asked if she still had the brush her lother used. Yet later they insinuated that she planned for that to happen when he noticed it was brand new. So she predicted the conversation? Makes no sensr
She was probably given a different outline of the show that obviously changed, so she probably had no choice but to continue on due to contractual obligations.
That show kinda has "Cuties" vibes, like "hey look at us we're denouncing problematic people" while they're being problematic themselves and that's properly disgusting.
the high pitch is way more intimidating than deep voices for me. the deep voice being scary is slightly overdone ESPECIALLY with men. like, let men be scary in their own way! lmaoooooo
i’m so glad you covered this cooper. i refuse to watch this, only through reaction channels like yours. i’m sick of disgusting men like sam levinson and the weeknd promoting hypersexualistion of women and their sick rape fantasies without backlash or cancellation. “he’s so rapey” “i kinda like that about him” this is disgusting. and the scrapped scripts were even worse. this is just promoting rape culture. as a sa victim, there is nothing enjoyable or romantic about sa / rape. it’s so gross. also another thing - lily rose depp and sydney sweeney look a lot like sam’s mother 🤢

Yes! Funny how it's mainly written by men. I'm not saying all men are like this, but the ones that are have been give way too big a platform. It's definitely not therapeutic to actual survivors
I feel like that was an intense dig at the idea of intimacy coordinators. I'm not even 80% sure, so someone correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't there an instance where someone, either cast or crew, or maybe even an intimacy coordinator themselves, came out and voiced how weird and annoyed be was at the idea of the network providing one? That it diminishes the scenes? I know he did something similar in the movie he did with Zendaya for Netflix. Malcom and Marie, if I'm not mistaken? That he used his character to rant? The character, also a director or someone in the realm of film making, was ranting about some critic, and it was very similar to the problems he himself had with a specific critic. I remember that more clearly than the intimacy coordinator scenario, but knowing him, I highly doubt I'm wrong. Edit: I can't find anything on whether or not someone came out and expressed concerns with him dealing with intimacy coordinators, but HBO did implement a rule for all of their productions that if a sex scene is involved, that an intimacy coordinator must be hired and present. So, for the exact same network that put in a rule, and let's be honest, was a huge factor into why the job is needed given their past of productions being very graphic sex scenes and nudity, having a scene where the job and necessity is blatantly mocked, is very weird and cannot help but make me think that Levinson definitely got to live out a fantasy through his characters once again.
It is very fucked up and to me shows how everyone involved in the show should be investigated. Only people who cross boundaries get upset at people whose job is to protect people's boundaries.
kinda glad that the weeknd joined the club of “singers making bad shows and accidentally exposing that they are bad people” sia really was bored being the only one

Their dismissal of the intimacy coordinator in the first few scenes really signals what Sam and Abel are all about, which is making sure no one is around to defend vulnerable young women they want to take advantage of. Dont think Ill be able to keep watching euphoria or listening to the weeknd after this. This show is absolutely disgusting.
I legit cannot listen to his music anymore. I had a couple of his songs in one of my playlists and when one of them started to play, it really startled me that I immediately just got genuinely disgusted hearing his voice. I can't seem to separate him from that disgusting character. His voice grosses me out now, whether he's singing or talking.
Ohh shut up. That doesn’t matter, the fact that this show is ass is what the problem is here. Had the show been good there would of been no complaints.
Traumatizing how much this show mirrors an actual abusive relationship I had as a minor when I was first starting to show signs of being mentally ill as a teenager. I would be hypersexual and extremely low inhibition and old men really loved that. It's fucking terrifying how they are romanticizing this and making it about her "wanting" it. People that are ok don't want stuff like that without explicit consent and safety measures. You can't just randomly choke somebody the second time you see them and protray that like it's almost beautiful because you're actively feeding into the groomer's objective of convincing a person that somehow this is fine and artistic. If I had been telling this story it would've started with seeing how unstable she is, how desperate for escape she is, not that stupid intimacy coordinator crap. This show is going to be seen by people who will then be slightly more likely to accept shit like this afterwards and that is scary as hell
These are my thoughts exactly. It’s never like this for the people who are actually abused or suffer from mental illness, the fact that people continue to defend this garbage & call others “dramatic” honestly makes me sick
Personally if I had written the show I would’ve made it obvious that people were convincing her that she wanted to sexualize herself, that it was normal and empowering for her to be in a vulnerable position in front of a bunch of strangers flashing cameras at her. THEN I’d have the scene with the intimacy coordinator where it’d be obvious that she’d be ignoring her own feelings and following what she was conditioned to feel But Sam “consent is for nerds” Levinson doesn’t care abt telling a good portrayal of women’s suffering
If I remember correctly Lily rose Depp said something about empowering woman in this show but I am sorry her being nude doesn’t empower woman at all….she is in a trauma and let’s a man controls her who is taking advantage of her trauma like I don’t understand how that’s empowering
Also it might feel empowering to her, but this depiction is hurtful to all women because it only benefits her, but multiple men will profit from it and see women as depicted by the character she agreed to play
i'm so upset they got dan levy, the man who revolutionised queer couples in TV, the man who got men kissing on the biggest billboard in times square, a hardcore feminist and ally, to say the stupidest line in a show that goes against all his morals
I know right, I was so sad when I saw him in this. I truly hope that he didn’t know what type of show he was ACTUALLY agreeing to be in before shooting started, because if he did know then I’m going to be so disappointed ☹️
@@forwunday8351I feel like a lot of actors agreed to do this show with the original plot and premise in mind, before the overhaul happened. But because of how hard it is to get out of contractual obligations, he just had to keep doing it, no matter how bad and cringy it was. I feel the same for Lily honestly.
Just know that most actors/actresses usually have contracts that are VERY difficult to get out of and if there are massive rewrites, they cannot just back out and if they still force the issue of not wanting to participate any longer, they have to give thousands or millions of dollars. Also it can be a career killer in Hollyweird. I can give you a great example. Everyone knows about the giant flop that is Cutthroat Island starring Geena Davis. However, what some people aren’t aware of was how much turmoil was on the set. The male lead wasn’t even the one they wanted. They originally had landed Michael Douglass but when he realized he wasn’t going to get enough screen time, he walked away. They then set about getting other actors for the lead and eventually landed on the one who appeared. He wasn’t even their second choice. He was waaaaaay down the list. After Douglass walked, Geena Davis wanted to walk too but was CONTRACTUALLY obligated to continue to film. With that being said, I am almost certain that most of the actors and actresses signed on for the original script but once Sam Levison took over, some probably wanted to walk. The fact that Dan was only in the pilot and never showed up again, probably means that he was written out (or something that often happens in rewrites… his character was forgotten about) and in all the footage I’ve seen he isn’t apart of the promos. As for Lily Depp, I believe she is contractually obligated to promote the series. I must reiterate that not doing promotions about a project for a budding actor can be seriously damaging to their career. Even when veteran actors do it, it makes the news and raises eyebrows.
I was such a big fan of The Weeknd’s music. I used to play his songs on the guitar everyday. And then The Idol’s reviews started rolling in. I also heard that Abel actually had the fucking audacity to say that the show when it was written by the woman was too woman-centric. God forbid we put the woman as the center in a woman’s story! I often wondered if Abel was as misogynistic as his music portrayed him to be. I’m happy to say that I’ll die knowing that Abel is as misogynistic as his character The Weeknd
Yeah totally agree. And it doesn’t even take much to see he’s a misogynistic ahole, like he had so many toxic moments about Bella hadid after their breakup and played one of her PRIVATE voice messages to him live at a concert once, if anyone remembers like……. MY GOD
I was also a really big fan of his music when I was under the impression that The Weeknd is just a character he's playing up...but now I'm not so sure and it makes me really sad and embarrassed 😢😢😢
Haven't watched it yet. But I got the sense that his music while being about drugs and fuckboyism, doesn't really aim to glorify it, rather the opposite. He seems aware that it's toxic. I can see it through his music videos, and some of his songs like "blinding lights", "I was never there", "faith" etc. But judging from the reviews of the show.....
@@fewofmyfavoritethings there's rumors he was terrible to her and would encourage his friends to sexualize her. he would make her do things like flash his male friends. twisted. glad she got away. hope she is doing better

it’s good to note that euphorias prop master is known to s3xually assault and harass women and that Sam Levinson defended him ! The fact that he’s involved in this is not surprising.
Anyone who has ever had a random dude start dancing with them and then making out with them knows how hard it is to physically push someone off of you on the dance floor. It's not sexy. It's assault that you can't escape due to the SHEER PROXIMITY of other people. That scene alone being portrayed as sexy and intimate is so fucked up lmao It's different if you're with your partner on the dance floor but just some random who made eye contact with you across the dance floor? Bitch absolutely not.
Oh god, flashbacks to the early 00s, me and a friend were underage but sneaked into a rave and a man just grabbed me from behind and didn't let go, you're disoriented and surrounded on all sides...never again, I was done after that.
@@c.w.8200 I actually used to dance at raves and so much of my job when not on stage or at the ticket table was making sure no one was being weird or gross. Okay so hear me out hear me out. Watching the latest episode, that scene where he f**ng*red lily in front of everyone really stood out to me as how obviously this could have been handled better without necessarily getting rid of the "psychosexual" aspect. Scenes like that are used in films, to great effect at times (Catherine Breillat comes to mind). But there's the difference. The fragmentation of lily's body, the zooming in zooming over, it was so quintessentially male gaze, it really gives up any right to call itself satirical or meaningful. I don't care if your usage of nudity and the male gaze is deliberate to showcase whatever you want to say about Hollywood, Sam, you're a man in Hollywood, your reality supersedes whatever you think your message is. If the camera had been static, wide frame, just standing in the room and being reduced to one of the bystanders, it actually could have been a something. Something shocking and something the writing doesn't call for (oh my god none of the sex is justified by the script) but still. I really really wish I could have seen the original (female) director's vision. Anyway, love your videos lol
thought the exact same thing about that scene. I had no doubt i was watching someone (like abel or sam's) fantasy, and that they would love for it to be real. Versus like you said using it as a uncomfortable scene thats maybe is used to portray the absurdity of it all or for satirical purposes, etc.
I was gonna power through the show as like, from an analytical stand point to see what’s going on in pop culture but reading this I don’t think I can stomach it. Thanks for the spoiler honestly hahah bless up 🙏🏻 and absolutely agree with everything you’re saying
it’s not necessary to fire her, they could have just worked with her but they felt firing her was necessary to show their vision and.. idk how i feel ab that
I loved a show on Hulu called Harlots which featured a lot of s*x workers from the 19th century. There were scenes of a violent nature towards women but they took a lot of care with it. One of the characters has her first time auctioned off, accidentally angers the buyer, and is assaulted. They never actually show it onscreen and instead the focus is completely on the character in the aftermath. The director and writers actually respected the audience to understand what happened in that room without showing it.
Abel seems to be forming some weird type of complex. How are you gonna decide, once a product is 80% done, that it's too focused on a women's perspective WHEN THE MAIN CHARACTER IS A WOMAN. He was also thirst trapping in the premiere or something like it was really about to be a hit 😭 I don’t think the weekend or Sam Levinson could understand the experience of a woman in the music industry if it hit them with a truck if they really thought "I like rapey guys :)" and "intimacy coordinator bad, written consent bad 😡" is the perfect way to represent how women in the industry feel. Feminism to Sam and Abel is when women sexy and naked and of course they're always in control and are never uncomfortable :))
The intimacy coordinator scene makes me so angry. The reason those people EXIST is to protect people from sexual exploitation. Not being allowed to show your boobs is not nearly as bad as what happens to people when intimacy coordinators aren’t present.
I think being able to try out new things as an artist and find different mediums through which to express yourself is great. But this just isn’t one of those times.
was just discussing with a friend of mine how absolutely terrible the idol is, and then you post a video about absolutely terrible the idol is. directly trying to translate music into a show but accidentally creating a torture porn .. show film thing was not something i thought i'd ever see but here we are
You really nailed the part about it being 2 weird men writing a female character who wants to be sexual, not many other commentators touch on how creepy that is. Your charisma is delightful btw :)
The weekend always gave me narcissistic vibes glad to know my gut wasn’t wrong. His whole “female perspective” lie screams, “I wasn’t given attention wah wah.”
I read a comment that Lily and Sydney, the characters that were the most sexualized, look like Sams mother when she was younger. And they kinda do...all blond, brown eyes, simular figure and all three have the same height 💀
You should see episode four… they’re trying to turn the tables and make Jocelyn the villain 🙄 like she is some foul temptress who has been complicit in the abuse all along. Terrible!
What I don’t like about the opening scene is it’s totally ripping off pearl. Mia goth absolutely ATE that creepy ending scene of pearl. To me it feels like sam saw how Mia ate that scene and wanted to recreate it but it didn’t hit nearly as hard.
This is crazy how I’ve only watched the idol through RUclips reviews telling you how uncomfortable and terrible it is. When i see the clips of The Weeknd being like creepy with the soft voice of his it really shows me how he should have just stuck to singing. If he wanted his initiation era again he should idk make another album that’s kinda like trilogy and not attend and ruin a somewhat okay show. He shouldn’t have had a say that was that big just cause he was more famous than the others.
I am literally stunned that so many famous people like lily, the weeknd and Jennie are in this rapey show tbh. Idk if I'll be able to look at the weeknd the same for his creative direction lol Always love a Cooper vid on shows like this =)

The intimacy coordinators contract point is not just to protect the person being photographed, the contracts are there to protect the people who are working the shoots... So there may be people on that set who want to know what to expect. If boobs randomly showed up at my workplace and the job contract says they won't be there, well, I think I'd like to know about that in advance if possible. It also protects all companies involved from liability of coercion etc.
always remember kids, the intention behind piece of media really only matters when it is executed properly. I feel like most of the complaints lodged against this show are met with rebuttals from fans of it like “it’s supposed to be gross, you’re supposed to be repulsed by it, etc”. correct, however that’s not where critique is supposed to be found in media like this, especially when the MAIN CHARACTER seems totally cool and okay with being sexualized in the manner they claim is supposed to be the “critique” against the hollywood fame machine. it’s not a real critique on anything. it’s a perverted account of some fantasy that men have projected in media time and time again. and fans of the show are falling for it.
Yeah, same thing with cuties. We all get what the intention was, it's just that the execution was awful and actually did the thing, that you were trying to criticize.
I lost any respect I had for Mr Weeknd. As a survivor of abuse and narcissists who create a little cult of people trauma bonded to them, I don't find anything about those subjects titillating and that feels like what they were offering us. The interesting thing would be the analytical view, the UNDER REPRESENTED FEMALE LENSE, the disillusionment of these mythologized celebrity figures. But no, we just got a glimpse into these dudes porn search history. Petition for the unfinished Seimetz version I WANT TO SEE WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN.
Abel just gives that perfect balance between cannot act, yet gives literal realness to the evil of the character. And with the backstory to the filming, it makes me think that’s HIM. Dads will be dads, so as much as I don’t want to see Johnny Depp back in court, if I read he knocked Abel sideways on the street, I wouldn’t hate it.
This show is atrocious and offensive. And I can't believe that Lily Rose Depp would play this role that is exploitive and is so super sexualized, it glorifies SA and other sexual deviancies. I'm a SA survivor, and I can't watch this show past the first episode. She will regret making this show, but too late as it's out there and I hope she steers clear of these types of roles. And I was never a fan of the weekend, but I did like a few of his songs, but no more after this crap. It's all just thoroughly disgusting. I hope this show gets cancelled.🤮
I've been wondering since the whole script was changed later on bland the female writer fired by Abel and Sam, if lily rose Depp might have signed a contract when the script was good
@@sosia0narothis is old but that's most likely what did happen, I usually assume people who don't leave these projects physically can't because of a contract
I rewatched Euphoria and Sam Levinson seems to like to use the word "Rapey" to describe these kinds of sexualized scenarios or characters which idk is a big red flag to me.
No literally I was thinking the exact same thing, that’s how you know a show was executed horribly.Similar to the kissing booth and all of those other Netflix movies etc. Like the fact that these movies that cost god knows how much are the same caliber as a 13 year old wattpad fic is so concerning. Ao3 writes 10000x better smut scenes than Hollywood ever will.😭
I swear he has so much energy at the start of every video then he watches stuff to make himself annoyed and disgusted but still makes so many jokes(I love him)
I can’t understand the people who say the bad acting and cringe writing are intentional. The sex scenes are meant to be taken serious but are so unintentionally hilarious and idk you can see it and take it serious.
when I was in high school I was SA’d by this guy that would ONLY listen to the weeknd songs and always say how much he related to him and all that. i haven’t been able to listen to any of his music since then and seeing him in an awful role like this doesn’t surprise me but still makes me feel sick
You pointed out alot i actually didn't notice or other creators failed too. Your so fucking right tho about the feminist take they might try to take ." Oh no no they WAAANT to show this , they looooveeee creepy rapey vibes man. Its empowering for them " even sex workers need people on their safety side to protect them from being fucked over and exploited. So great great points
The way you explained that her WANTING to be exploited against her contract should not be perceived as the real actions of real actresses in the industry, cause she is written by MEN in the industry is so important to remember. Beyond just looking at this scene for what it was made to be, we have to realize how these (clearly) misogynistic writers have completely twisted the truth of whats going on in most of these situations for the sake of their sick male fantasy. "Oh she's a sexy young lady. Oh my god she SO wants to be objectified and nude all the time" like EW🤢 seriously? Thats on a show that claims to TACKLE these social issues and expose them?? You ARE these issues. And to know that they fired the original FEMALE writer for "too much female perspective" is just. The last piece of the creepy puzzle of this entire show and production. Its enough to make a grown man vomit. I liked how you clearly stated: we want HER perspective, not that of the weekend and sam lavinson. They just threw up their nasty objectification of women all over a show that was meant to combat this problematic nature of hollywood. I cant- you cant write a better satire than this. But like, its real life🙄
People get absorbed into the show/movie and don't really think about how all of this that's happening on the screen is happening because of writers/directors/producers/actors wanted it to. also, like..there are all sorts of benefits for say women who parrot anti-feminist views, even if it's just socially. I haven't seen anything by Amy Seimetz but I really wonder how differently it would have turned out if she had stayed at the helm. And in Hollywood, Intimacy co-coordinators are a pretty new thing. In 2018, HBO was the first place to implement them for all shows that have sexually intimate scenes and SAG encouraged their use in 2020. They aren't universally used and there has already been backlash to them.. as well as backlash to a lot of different social policy changes made in 2018. Many people were ready to say "MeToo has gone too" far before any changes were even implemented.
Before I even watch the video, I just wanted to say that graphic portrayal of the problematic side of any industry is only cool when you portray it in a way that makes the viewer feel for the victim, understand the gravity of the problem and the immediate mportance of somehow someway having that broken aspect of the system fixed. When it comes to showing an inhumane side of society, evoking accurately aimed repulsion and rage should be the main goal. And by "accurately aimed" I mean aimed at the issue, repulsion and rage caused by glamorization and glorification of wickedness and depravity DOES NOT COUNT. Ig some ppl don't understand that when therapists say you should nurture your inner child they are not talking about 13 yo edgelord who is convinced he with his knowledge of darkcoldworld is so deep that Mariana Trench is put to shame by it. And that's exactly the type of person that could come up with that entire circus of a plot where pretty strong tools are used without a purpose(violence for the sake of violence, nudity for the sake of nudity and suffering for the sake of suffering), and so the whole thing doesn't mean anything. Needless to say, I'm not watching a second of that show, but I'm definitely thankful for all the creators talking abt it because it's super interesting to listen to everyone's opinions. "I've had enough, Sam and Abel" in my head was immediately followed with "and now I'm not sane and definitely not able.not able to watch more of it". Sometimes my brain likes catastrophizing a bit too much😂

COOPER THANK GOD FOR PEOPLE LIKE YOU. Really valid points and good analysis, loved the video. I saw the pilot it made my stomach churn and so many RUclipsrs always seem to skip over a lot of the points you made, like highlighting that the idol is bad because of the weekends lol-acting and other trivial things and I really appreciate you getting to the bottom of why the whole show is so wrong and that it IS what it’s barely trying to sATirIze.

as someone who was taken advantage of and was deeply mentally ill (I've started therapy and improved tremendously since), this show makes my skin crawl and I keep having to pause to keep myself from having a break down. I literally cant keep watching cause this show is causing me to have emotional flashbacks to being assaulted. It also feels like the majority of the clips shown are when characters are about to pretend to sleep with one of the writers. As if they're writing their fantasies about the women they're bringing on the show like they're dolls to play with WHICH IS LITERALLY WHAT THE SHOW WAS SUPPOSED TO BE ABOUT
why is she the best character? imo the best one is Jocelyn's ex, cuz it looked like he actually cared about her. plus idk why people are saying jennie should get an oscar... i'm sorry, but we don't even see her much in the show + her acting is not that good.
Watching you makes me feel confident in my choice of husband. He has alot of similar feelings about this stuff and has always been gentle and respectful of me. I am very blessed to be with someone so aware and so empathetic towards others in an intelligent way.
I’m not gonna lie I honestly despise this show lol it’s grotesque with the nudity, it literally adds NOTHING to the story. Then when they re-enactment her childhood abuse OMG 😱. Then the shows literally supposed to be about Jocelyn but the whole show is focused on the weekends character. Like her character seems so 2D and also like a fetishized version of her original character they wrote. I hate the blatant sexualization of women instead of portraying us what we really are PEOPLE, we have thoughts, feelings, and are WAYYY more than just our bodies like ughhhhhh
This is her first big break and it’s so sad because I don’t think she understands how bad this is for her first huge role. I like her acting. I like her look. I think the show is being carried by her but this show is definitive just a weird twisted way to exploit her body on camera 😔 she could do so much better
As an Adam Driver stan I loved that you accidently said Adam Driver. Lol. Adam on everyone's mind. ❤ I literally was watching your video on Austin Bulter. I finished it and went to my homepage and saw you posted a new video! Also perfect Ryan Renolds impression!😂
People forget that intimacy coordinators also exist to make sure EVERYONE on set is comfortable. Not just the actors participating in a specific intimate scene, but everyone around them as well. Cast and crew
The fact that she says to the intimacy coordinator “so I’m not allowed to show my body” Doesn’t the talent and their management team put the nudity rider together…?!? It also depends on the project…
This is why i haaaate it when hollywood comes out with movies or tv shows where theyre trying to take a stab at feminism or orther isms. They have no idea what theyre doing and they dont even care enough about it to get educated
yea you'd swear whoever wrote it had never spoken to a woman before. and it's a shame cuz clearly a lot of talent went into it on the technical side. if the visuals were the same but literally anyone else in the world developed the story and dialogue, it would be really good.
The way they just wrote a “version” of Selena’s life is really gross. Even down to the medical bracelet photos. And I agree the cinematographer did a great job.
honestly for the intimacy coordinator part i thought it was less of them trying to villainize the coordinator but to show how crappy her manager was that he wasn’t protecting her or following the contracts, but that might just be me misreading it
It could've been that, if they hadn't made the coordinator a geeky caricature. Characters in media who give long winded explanations of things are meant to be seen as annoying, even if they're just doing their job. They also intentionally make lily's character keep opposing him without any of the other characters calling out how he's probably right
It's the framing of it, with Jocelyn arguing with him that she wants to show her nipples plus he's depicted as being nerdy, overly litigious and out of touch with what his real job is -- making sure Jocelyn and the rest of the crew are comfortable with the nudity levels.
when the scene of the intimacy cordinador came up i was like yup.. this is not going to be good. it also just showed abel and sam’s true intentions with the show😭😭😭

To me it was a clear jab at Sydney Sweeney
"Look at how I know what is truly empowering; she *wants* to show her body, that is what a real woman wants in 2023 !!!" - Sam Levinson, probably

Agreed but maybe esteem issues and in a low place after that pic was released
I was thinking the same thing. She's not in the sanest mindset and like her management team said earlier- she just might fűq you if she's not sane.
Lily rose depp is only 24... her getting humiliated like this is bad enough but I just realized how young she is... and how old the others are.
Reminds me of how Emilia Clarke was exploited during the shooting of GOT, she was 23.

Imagine being the actual intimacy coordinator as they shove someone in a closet for doing what your job is in a show
I feel like that was an intense dig at the idea of intimacy coordinators.

As someone with similair experiences, I'm so sorry and I'm so tired of the sexualization of mental illness
These are my thoughts exactly. It’s never like this for the people who are actually abused or suffer from mental illness, the fact that people continue to defend this garbage & call others “dramatic” honestly makes me sick
@@hejochh0pp same here. I'm so tired I don't even wanna talk about it. but every day I understand where these tendencies came from..
THIS.
Personally if I had written the show I would’ve made it obvious that people were convincing her that she wanted to sexualize herself, that it was normal and empowering for her to be in a vulnerable position in front of a bunch of strangers flashing cameras at her. THEN I’d have the scene with the intimacy coordinator where it’d be obvious that she’d be ignoring her own feelings and following what she was conditioned to feel
But Sam “consent is for nerds” Levinson doesn’t care abt telling a good portrayal of women’s suffering
The sexualisation of mental illness made me physically recoil into my chair 😭😭
If I remember correctly Lily rose Depp said something about empowering woman in this show but I am sorry her being nude doesn’t empower woman at all….she is in a trauma and let’s a man controls her who is taking advantage of her trauma like I don’t understand how that’s empowering
She's a phony. That's basically it.
Also it might feel empowering to her, but this depiction is hurtful to all women because it only benefits her, but multiple men will profit from it and see women as depicted by the character she agreed to play
to be fair she wouldn’t say bad things about the show while promoting it bc she’s probably under a contract
i'm so upset they got dan levy, the man who revolutionised queer couples in TV, the man who got men kissing on the biggest billboard in times square, a hardcore feminist and ally, to say the stupidest line in a show that goes against all his morals
I know right, I was so sad when I saw him in this. I truly hope that he didn’t know what type of show he was ACTUALLY agreeing to be in before shooting started, because if he did know then I’m going to be so disappointed ☹️
why do yall put these celebrities on pedestals? you realize most of them are sc*mbags right?
Wonder how much they paid him for that…..
MY GOD

Uh, the music was enough for me, now there’s this🤢
Haven't watched it yet. But I got the sense that his music while being about drugs and fuckboyism, doesn't really aim to glorify it, rather the opposite. He seems aware that it's toxic.
Anyway, love your videos lol

it’s not necessary to fire her, they could have just worked with her but they felt firing her was necessary to show their vision and.. idk how i feel ab that
I loved a show on Hulu called Harlots which featured a lot of s*x workers from the 19th century.

Who is the third? 🤔
@@LanaAndJenthey’re saying all three as in his mom, Sydney, and Lily

What I don’t like about the opening scene is it’s totally ripping off pearl. Mia goth absolutely ATE that creepy ending scene of pearl. To me it feels like sam saw how Mia ate that scene and wanted to recreate it but it didn’t hit nearly as hard.

UNDER RATED COMMENT.
What’s weird is the show sounded okay until he noticed he had the power to put his hands all over it and how do you make it like THAT omg
Same I've watched at least 5 other creators talk about this. I don't want to watch it but I want to see every scene dissected

I am literally stunned that so many famous people like lily, the weeknd and Jennie are in this rapey show tbh. Idk if I'll be able to look at the weeknd the same for his creative direction lol
Always love a Cooper vid on shows like this =)
IM SO CONFUSED ABOUT YG LETTING JENNIE DO THIS WHOLE THING?? Like out of all things new and artistic why would such a polished idol with extremely strict standards on not being controversial be in something so devastating as this show?
@@fewofmyfavoritethings exactly!!! It makes no sense to me?? Especially with how super strict they are with dating and all the stuff like that although yg is more lenient- it's so out of character

And Dan fucking Levy!!! Dan Levy of Schitt's Creek!!
I was at The Weeknd's very first public show. This was over 10 years ago when I lived in Toronto. Tickets were 30$. He had absolutely NO stage presence to the point it was actually awkward, although his voice was angelic.
That being said, I am not at all surprised at his acting.
Ouch bro
Hit him where it hurts 😂
yeah his acting is shit and the show is shit
but almost like how kanye made graduation people arent gonna really let abel go bc he made after hours
i can still enjoy all his old music but going forward if he puts some of the shit he said in his new music its gonna probs really have a whole new meaning. and not a good one at that.
Imagine criticising a guy with no stage presence at his first ever live performance💀💀 I saw him on his recent tour and his stage presence was amazing.
Intimacy coordinators are very, very important people in this industry. It's nuts how they show him as the 'loser'
This show is psychological horror. Not its genre, the show itself.
Evil of the irl character Abel? Bc he wrote the show too, it's creepy to write rapey scenes with 90% nude scenes while acting alongside her.
Cooper looks so good with his hair like that. He’s so “romance book written by a woman”
I miss when I didn’t know what his talking voice sounded like
Same I want earplugs
I don’t think his voice really was the problem, it's those goofy ahh "acting" skills and the script , dude tried so hard to be in "hot daddy" edits
I've been wondering since the whole script was changed later on bland the female writer fired by Abel and Sam, if lily rose Depp might have signed a contract when the script was good
@@sosia0narothis is old but that's most likely what did happen, I usually assume people who don't leave these projects physically can't because of a contract
someone mentioned that the clip of abel "threatening" that guy looks like a key and peele skit and it took me tf out 💀
FRRRR they look so gae
I rewatched Euphoria and Sam Levinson seems to like to use the word "Rapey" to describe these kinds of sexualized scenarios or characters which idk is a big red flag to me.

I'm very kinky and not a prude but this show just made me feel so uncomfortable and gross! Terrible show great review though ❤
real
not only are your takes on this show absolutely immaculate but your ryan reynolds impression is spot on 10/10
You pointed out alot i actually didn't notice or other creators failed too.
Sometimes my brain likes catastrophizing a bit too much😂
Watching a film cooper video is like having your friend who is in film school come barging in your door, carrying lunch and out of breath bc they ran to come tell you about this new show and the Analysis™ of it all and you're down bc this is just a regular Tuesday except you're chowing down on your Chow Mein and trying to get the actual plot out of them underneath all this ADHD
COOPER THANK GOD FOR PEOPLE LIKE YOU. Really valid points and good analysis, loved the video. I saw the pilot it made my stomach churn and so many RUclipsrs always seem to skip over a lot of the points you made, like highlighting that the idol is bad because of the weekends lol-acting and other trivial things and I really appreciate you getting to the bottom of why the whole show is so wrong and that it IS what it’s barely trying to sATirIze.
just found this channel and this is probably the most chaotic, neurodivergent storytelling style I’ve ever encountered. my brain is actually engaged, no need to rewind every 2 seconds, I love it!
They tried to recreate Euphoria with adults and failed miserably. Also love how the weekend can be blantantly mysoginistic and everyone just doesn't care.
Genuinely hope he has no career after this. I hope this show has crashed and burned so hard that it is wiped from existence. Levinson deserves nothing after this either. The recreation of trauma, abusive scenes framed as “sensual”, just disgusting.

as someone who was taken advantage of and was deeply mentally ill (I've started therapy and improved tremendously since), this show makes my skin crawl and I keep having to pause to keep myself from having a break down.

People forget that intimacy coordinators also exist to make sure EVERYONE on set is comfortable. Not just the actors participating in a specific intimate scene, but everyone around them as well. Cast and crew
The fact that she says to the intimacy coordinator “so I’m not allowed to show my body”
Doesn’t the talent and their management team put the nudity rider together…?!? It also depends on the project…
everytime the mischievous scene was brought up again I flinched in my seat
This is why i haaaate it when hollywood comes out with movies or tv shows where theyre trying to take a stab at feminism or orther isms. They have no idea what theyre doing and they dont even care enough about it to get educated
Or hire the people who could be successful.
yea you'd swear whoever wrote it had never spoken to a woman before. and it's a shame cuz clearly a lot of talent went into it on the technical side. if the visuals were the same but literally anyone else in the world developed the story and dialogue, it would be really good.
This is a wattpad story gone WRONG ABSOLUTELY WRONG
