Hi Bastien, Firstly, how's the last month been with the Olympics? I bet it was a little different. I'm so glad you like our video. Leuven is great; you should try it. It's only 2.5 hours from Gare du Nord to Leuven, well worth it for a little city break. Thanks so much for stopping by and taking the time to comment, All the best Gary & Janis
Oh that park around park abbey brings back memories, we used it in high school for our running tests, if I remember right boys had to manage two and a half laps around the pond in 30 minutes, girls 2.
That made me smile Flo, you didn't say good memories (If I remember my school running days, they were NOT good memories 😀) Thanks for taking the time to stop by and comment All the best Gary & Janis
Thank you for the lovely video. My son is moving to Leuven soon. He & I will be going in 2 weeks for a visit. Watching this video helps to have a little understanding of the sights. I look forward to watching more.
Thanks for the kind words, we loved our time in Leuven, such a wonderful city to explore and experience. We hope you enjoy your visit. I’m sure we were there this time last year, so it should look very similar. All the very best, Gary & Janis
Oh my city ❤❤❤❤ i love living in Leuven. Im originally from Lille, France but my home is now Leuven. City is so nice and safe , beautiful architecture. Anyone pls come to visit❤❤❤
Chantal Glad you like our video, Leuven is special, wonderful place to visit. To be honest we like visiting Lille too, a different side of France. Notice more people in bars and cafes drink beer than as you travel south, and the food is different too, oh the carbonade, but I guess very similar to Leuven. Oooh, we just love travelling, Thanks for taking the time to comment. All the best, Gary & Janis
@criticalthinkers3787 nice 😊 very good decision❤️🇧🇪 . Lots of Dutch students here at the University of Leuven. I can recommend also abdij v park, and Heverlee bos en zoete bron area. Welcome to Leuven🥰
My dear friends, you have produced yet another outstanding and beautiful video tour - which should have attracted more views than it has - in my opinion !!! This was a genuine memory trip for me, from long ago as a visiting post -grad. Back in the late 1960`s to early 70`s Leuven was lovely, but not quite as attractive as it is now - apart from the Groot Begijnhof Leuven, which I was instantly drawn towards, as the serenity of the location I found completely appealing - I wish I still had the years in me to go back - but this video has generated some wonderful memories - and I thank you. So, once again, many thanks Gary and Janis - I offer my best wishes to you both for the fast approaching festive season - take care, and very well done :)
Thank you sir, the nice thing about our videos is that they tend to be evergreen, so maybe this, and the other Flemish ones, will get some legs in the new year; I tend not to worry. All I hope is somebody watches this, thinks that's a place I'd like to experience, does, and has a great time. It's looking particularly festive here in the southeast today; we've had a good dusting of snow ( it will be gone shortly, but for now, it looks nice.) Wishing you all the best for the festive season too, it comes around so quickly, and in a flash, it will be gone, but not before I've eaten my own body weight in gingerbread & christmas pudding. All the best, Gary (& Janis)
Thank you for your video, I am exploring places to visit, and your videos are very helpful. Also your editing and voice created a very calm vibes, I feel like meditating. 😂
St. Peter's Church was never completed. Normally a giant church tower had to be built on top of it. But because Leuven is located in a valley and there is a lot of quicksand under the ground, it was never built for safety reasons. The Sint Pieterskerk would otherwise have fallen over.
Ara, You're right, it was never completed to the original plans, and that gives it a distinct look. You can tell something is not quite right when you look at the Northwest end, but it is still a wonderful place - finished or not. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Happy & safe travels Gary & Janis
@@OurWorldForYou A good example of the swamp is the Sint-Jacobs Church. It is 175 years older than St. Peter's Church and is completely crooked. In the meantime, it has been restored for almost 50 years. Square Sint-Jacobs is still one of the most sensitive places in Leuven where deep underground the swamp is still very active. In many cases, the many underground corridors that Leuven has to offer make it difficult to restore buildings. The original St. Peter's Church was built in the 1400s but was bombed almost completely by Germany during World War II.
Ara, thanks so much for this, very interesting. we will aim to check it out when we return to Leuven, probably next year now, because we've not finished with Flanders. All the best, Gary & Janis
Yes; we learned thàt in Leiden ! The Saint Peters tower was once the highest tower in the world (110 meters) from 1290 until 1512 when it collapsed ! No one was hurt but the mess....!😂 That was a waste of money !
Beautiful video, and I love the calm, quiet, slow voice over. It’s like you are allowing us to focus on what we are seeing while you whisper without being imposing. Really enjoyable. Thanks

Hi Holly, We visited in October, and it was. We were there on a Friday/Saturday and discovered an interesting fact from a tour guide. Leuven has a large student population, and a lot of them are domestic, so they return home at the weekend (laundry duties and a home-cooked meal, maybe). A few students are still around, but it changes the mix slightly. Lovely city, and we had a great time. Thanks for taking the time to comment, Happy travels, Gary & Janis
