  • #Ad - A look at Mechelen, in the Flemish half of Belgium, in association with Visit Flanders & Visit Mechelen.
We'll start in the centre of town at the Grote Markt. Everything we see will be a 10-15 walk from here.
Heading south, we drop down to the River Dyler, and discover that it's the lifeline of Mechelen. There are other clues through the city to it's watery past if you know what you're looking for.
Next, it's a must-do in Mechelen, take a boat trip. Firstly head north towards Antwerp, as far as the old public swimming baths, before turning around and heand back under the old bridges past Haverwerf, and Mechelen's historic 16th & 17th-century merchant houses. We pass the old Lamot brewery and on under the "Hoogbrug" and "Fonteinbrug" turning around after we pass the old watermill and head back to the quayside.
After a closer look at the merchants houses it's onto "De Vleeshalle", a food hall in the centre of the city. Fully fuelled, we embark on a Burgundian Walking tour organised by Visit Mechelen and learn that some amazing Flemish art is free to see in the churches of Mechelen.
We discover Mechelen's connection to English royalty through Margaret of York, sister of Edward IV and Richard III, who married Charles the Bold and lived in a palace in Mechelen. Just opposite is the palace of Margaret of Austria, the step-grandaughter of Margaret of York. This was the golden age of Mechelen.
Next, we discover Mechelen's darkest days at the Kazerne Dossin Memorial. Due to Mechelen's excellent rail infrastructure, the Nazi-occupied city became the hub for deporting Jews & Romani to concentration camps in the east.
On a brighter note, we discover the kindness of the Beguines, and how their charitable work led to the Het Anker brewery. This leads us onto a tour of Mechelen's last remaining brewery.
After the pleasure comes a little pain, a visit to St Rumbold's Cathedral, and the 538-step climb to the top of St Rumbold's tower, and the Mechelen's Skywalk.
Once completed, we settle back and enjoy the Grote Markt at dusk, explaining the story of the Maneblussers, or moon extinguishers, before concluding our tour of Mechelen with a walk down to the old fish market.
Thanks so much for watching, and we'd love to hear from you so please leave a comment and don't forget to subscribe so you don't miss any of our travels: 🟢-

Dear people, how nice that you have visited the city where I live. I've lived here for 65 years and have watched the city grow and get bigger. Mechelen has many advantages but also disadvantages. It is a central city with almost 90,000 inhabitants. You need three days to fully discover the city. Always welcome. Greetings Eddy

Thank you my friend, we loved our brief time in Mechelen, and you're right, two days was not enough, so we will have to come back one day.
      Thanks again,
      Safe & happy travels,

Thank you, that's very kind of you.
We loved our time in Mechelen, it is a wonderful place to visit, and I think we may be back one day.
Make sure you pop into the tourist office in Schepenhuis, that's filled with interesting information.
Given your interest, it would be good to catch some historical images of the city during the wars and how the city has arisen, like a phoenix, from the ashes.
Anyway, thanks for dropping by and taking the time to comment; it's really appreciated.
      All the best,

      Hi Lynne,
Mechelen is a wonderful city, just beautiful. We loved its layers of history and digging into people like Charles V and Margeret of Austria, and their links to British history.
Wandering the streets around the Beguinage and learning of their charitable work was inspiring. It became a bit of the theme of the whole flemish trip.
Our one regret was not being able to visit the Kazerne Dossin Memorial, we just didn't have time.
We hope you have a great time, and if you get a chance get on a guided tour, they are so informative.
      All the best,
      Gary & Janis

Hello Friends, and thank you for once more providing a stunning video of your journey around Belgium, comprehensive and fascinating. Also, thank you for exploring and highlighting the history of Mechelen, both the good and the bad, all part of it`s heritage.
Very, very well done - a genuine pleasure to watch :)

Thank you so much; I did think of you and your family when I visited the Kazerne Dossin Memorial. It reminded me that the impact of the Holocaust still resonates today, and as dark as that story is, long may it continue being told. This video took a long time to put together because I wanted to get it right. About to start the final chapter, Leuven, let's hope this one flows a little better.
Thanks again for the kind comments,
      Stay safe, stay well.

@@OurWorldForYou Thank you my friends, you are so kind and considerate. In all honesty, I wasn`t entirely certain I would watch this, and had you filmed inside the holocaust memorial, I doubt very much I could have done so, but to see that a substantial memorial has been created is a wonderful thing - and for those, like myself, who lost almost the entire family, it is a genuine comfort to know that the Belgian people have no intention of forgetting this dreadful past, so that hopefully it will never be repeated !!!!!
Thank you once again for this beautiful video - do take care :)

You have just helped me uncover some footage in a folder called Ypres from our visit in 2018, which I had forgotten we had captured. I might have to see if I can create something for RUclips on our visit.
You could also check out Leuven & Ghent too - both interesting; ruclips.net/video/qt6QV3Ha6hI/видео.html & ruclips.net/video/XttgqOYYZJc/видео.html

Stephen, are you driving? If so, yes very. You'll want to go to Tyne Cot & Passchendaele (www.ourworldforyou.com/tyne-cot-passchendaele-belgium/) but also the museum in the Cloth Hall is great too.
If you are not driving, then an organised trip could be the answer. A fascinating place to visit

Currently you can let them record your voice pronouncing the name of one of the many deported which will be used for a huge memorial project.
