- It's Adam Koralik here and today we're discussing the recent PSN/PS4 debacle, aka the CBOMB issue, that will ultimately leave the PS3, PSP, and PS Vita gimped, while potentially terminating the PS4 entirely. Sony has made some...questionable decisions lately regarding the longevity of their consoles, and the debate of digital vs physical. Unfortunately, this also seems to apply to the PS5 as we JUST found out. Let's discuss.

PlayStation will apparently extend digital life support for the PS3 and PS Vita. PSP will still shut down. Per Jim Ryan, PlayStation blog.

Thats funny I was just about to comment saying that I just saw and read that Sony is reversing the idea of shutting down the PSN store for ps3/vita. Till I saw your pinned comment lol

This whole situation makes me sad. I honestly don't plan on ever buying a PS5 if this doesn't get fixed.
I feel the exact same way that you do.. I will not stand for Sony being Anti-Consumer. So no PS5 for me unless they think about patching this mess up!!
The sad thing about this video is that it basically acts as a recap to your RUclips career (as far as game consoles go). You've been saying these things for years. I took it to heart. I own VERY little digital content and don't plan to change that now (with the exception of Game Pass, which I consider to be a rental service more than anything)! But it is super discouraging that Sony designed these systems to not even let me play my discs. Had I known that...well, I wouldn't have sent so much money on them. Who knows, I might not going forward (despite owning a PS5).
That's a nice perception of the video. Honestly it's hard for me to see it that way since I'm the one making it. So I appreciate that feedback.
@@AdamKoralik Glad the comment was helpful!
@@Apptrepreneur The sad part is that even if you swear by physical content, sometimes there is no choice but to go digital. Obviously you have DLC. Back in the early days buying DLC was like buying a drink or fries with your hamburger - they weren't essential to the meal but they were a nice option. Now buying the original game is like buying only the hamburger bun, and your DLC is the meat, onions, vegetables and all the other ingredients that should have been thrown in with the burger. And then there's super rare games that fetch hundreds of dollars on ebay, but less than $10 digitally. Gee, what should I do?
xbox has a drm too, and is worse
I have been saying this for years as well look at the wii e shop im still mad about that
Sony 2013: You do not need to be online to play your games.

When I first saw that Jim Ryan quote about Gran Turismo I went straight to my PS1 collection, pulled out GT1 and played it. I was 14 again listening to bands on the soundtrack that I still love to this day and driving cars that got me into my current love of cars.
Jim Ryan hates not having your attention on the new console to maintain his big salary bonus. I wish all gamers would unite and not buy a PS5 to scare the shit out of him and make them squirm.

@@Toomnyusernae I think Sony are doing a good enough job of stopping gamers buying a PS5 without gamers uniting. I'm wondering if there's actually going to be anyone still hyped about that console by the time stock actually arrives.
The first two are the best and I feel the exact same way. The later titles were never as captivating.
All they would have to do is say "we'll turn off the need to sync whenever a console becomes legacy. Go download the PS3 patch right now." But instead, radio silence for a month.

PS3 isn't affected by the PS4 bug. PS3s will still work, might be a good idea to get patches ASAP but unpatched games will still work (if they're supposed to work).
Digital notwithstanding, because I do think those licenses do require clocks due them being "licensed for a lifetime" instead of "permanently licensed" so it needs to check if we're still in this lifetime.
Your "Chipping Away" is a great analysis for how they normalised Digital/Streaming etc. Just like how they do it within news media, its a gradual process so you don't even notice it happen.
I feel sorry for playstation collectors, it's really screw up knowing they've collected "physical access keys" so I hope this is fixed in some form eventually.
True, I own 600+ games for different playstation consoles, around 200 for PS4... I swear I wont buy a single new game from now on. Even if they do some kind of damage control, for me, the overall tendency is now obvious, end of owning games as we know it is inevitable. I'll stick to collecting PS1 and PS2 games, and as for my PS3 and PS4 CFW is the way to go... But this is crazy nonetheless, I've bought so many original PS4 games and now looks like I'll have to mod the consoles to play them🤯

Me too After the PS3 Gen I got a PC built for myself , I kept a close eye on the Playstation stuff still, the PS4 Gen wasn't very great at all, the focus is just on singleplayer 1st party video games, there was a serious lack of Multiplayer, least 1st party wise after the launch period of the PS4 and there's no games that Surprised me at all apart from one, that's Dreams.
When the Wii store closed, I said that this is just the beginning of what effects occur when games are digital.
But people said that you can just put the games on a hard drive and carry on ... Well ps4 is an DRM console.
Same. This is why I moved to PC back in 2012. Xbox 360 was the last new console I bought.

Even for people who only buy physical games, it is very hard nowadays to not hack your console, to patch your games and keep them playable.

Damn gen Z’rs are addicted to streaming everything. The ones I talk to seem so convinced that their music and movies/TV stream sources are the most convenient and economical options. They have this smugness about it too. Like WE’RE the morons for not wanting our credit cards attached to 10 or more different companies charging us $10-$20 a month for everything we hear, see, and play! They “cut the cable” and replaced it with a pipeline to their wallet!📀📀📀📀📀📀📀📀
I'm on the older end of Gen Z, and i see those people and it feels like were two different species.
They look at me like a moron for chosing to buy physical discs or Cartridges in the Switch's case.
Not even just gen z, but everyone who's more ignorant of future woes for the sake of present ease.
And also just generally technologically illiterate people who don't fully grasp what they're giving up.
Thank you for mentioning the smugness! I once had a "discussion" with someone who kept proclaiming that owning physical or digital licenses would be a thing of the past, and subscriptions and streaming were the future, but would never acknowledge any potential issues with such a future or any personal opinions on the subject aside from "Oh yeah, well, it's happening, so what now??? :^)"
Do people just have some insecurity about being on the "losing side" or something? "Corporations are using convenience to lure people into paradigms that are increasingly beneficial to the corporations themselves and exploitative/constraining to the people. I'll just enthusiastically support this no matter how bad things become, because this seems like the path of least resistance."
Totally true. I didn't go this route lol. Because I'm not of that generation.
Don’t throw us all in this category XD I’m 22 still collection video games, movies, books, and CDs,
The big push towards digital only has given me a kind of anxiety ever since I saw things like Catan and Panzer General: Allied Assault disappearing from the Xbox Live marketplace years ago. It's even possible that some of the more obscure games or DLC packs each of us have experienced could effectively be lost the public now, only to turn up in some "Lost Media" video years from now.
I'm glad you included that Jim Ryan quote at the end: it really puts the proverbial cherry on top of this situation. I'm a digital archivist by profession, and I understand legal/licensing issues as well as the logistical impossibility of maintaining everything indefinitely as a corporate policy, and I also get that some (perhaps most) people are always going to be more interested in the next big thing, but when I see people deliberately dismissing the "old" as ephemeral and unworthy of continued attention or respect, I can't help but take umbrage. Attitudes like his are how we eventually end up with things being lost, things being forgotten, and things needing a lot of additional effort on the part of a small number of people just to continue to exist and function.
AFuckingMen 😎👍
Several Atlus titles have actually already been pulled from the store without any warning whatsoever. Not just Utawarerumono from the other month, but Lost Dimension and Conception 2 and so on from just the other week. Wouldn't be surprised if other publishers quietly pulled their titles too before the cut off.
I dont blame them
Plus Atlus physical games are among the more expensive in the resell market.
This is why I love the direction MS is headed. It seems like they intend to carry forward the entire catalogue of games currently available on Series S/X to the next generations. Back compat is really our only saving grace when it comes to a digital gaming world.
Honestly, I think it's because it's not entirely new system it's an upgraded Xbox One past that last fancy one that came that had more power then the PS4 pro. In away I think Microsoft is making the right choices on how to make the hardware which is interesting. The main thing though is they have to at least keep the Xbox live I think on all of those consoles since I think they all use the same service.
Ive been warning ppl about servers shutting down in the future. And that someone games will be useless if they are half on disc, half download. What I was told back, “SeRvERS aRe FoR OnLiNe MuLtIpLaYeR”
Servers SHOULD only be for online multiplayer, syncing account info and cloud saves. Not a requirement for playing single player games.
Even if they update it, if in 20 years, someone gets a mint PS4, there is no PSN for PS4, no games are going to work. Because it was never patched.
Very true.
Unless they jailbreak that PS4.
News like this seems tailor made to shore up the now prevalent anti-Sony attitude of hardcore gamers. All Microsoft has to do to win hearts and minds in this generation is... not fuck up. They can coast to an easy moral victory with the loudest consumer segment.

Just insane you wont even be able to play your PS4 discs. I saw a video of someone testing it with no battery and internet connection - wont load any game.
Also, Sony turned off the patches for the disc version of Hot Shots Golf Out of Bounds PS3. Cannot access the DLC courses - and that content was never released on disc.

Agreed 100%. I miss the days of cartridges that don't require hour long updates or patches.
You know, I've been following Sony's PlayStation's footstep since 2003 when I got my first PS one console, followed with PS2 in 2006, then PS3 in 2011 and PS4 in 2016. Additionally I also purchased PSP in 2009 and recently a PS Vita in 2019... All of this, still playable and I gladly taking care of it with a good passion. And the moment I learn the online feature of the current-gen console, it was that moment I felt unfortunate about it's longevity... And yes, it was true. Good things must come to the end, but I really disappointed with Sony's quote "PLAY HAS NO LIMITS", since this quote proves that no matter what games you have from what eras, you still can play it. But NO... It wasn't. That title seems to be unworthy in my opinion. But I don't want to go too far or too exaggerated on this, but at least I'd like to enjoy it and tells it to future generations to give it a try and tell their opinions about it...
But hey, that's just a one-man take, who knows Sony could change their mind (If that could happened of course... lol).
Even though I don't use the PlayStation (except my PS2) platform to game, it is really concerning since everything is becoming digital now. I just got Xbox Game Pass and it is fun, but I do worry about the future of media in general. I think we might be screwed in an all digital future. Retro gaming is going to be impossible in coming decades. Even if you buy the physical disc, it might not have the whole game on it! Perhaps the game has bugs and needs a online update from a server that was shutdown years ago! I am worried.
Jim Ryan should change the slogan from "This is for the Players" to "This is for Myself".
I really hope Sony's putting a firmware update for the PS3/PS4 to fix the issue. They can do it.
I think if enough people complain about it online they’ll do it. I think I made another comment about starting some viral social media chain, posting it everywhere and maybe Someone at Sony will respond.
Lets make more noise about it then the power of the consumers starts 💪 now🙋♂️🙋♀️
Just to add to Adam's video. If PSN was to be completely shutdown for these systems in the future, for those of you who think that they can just backup their save data, patches and DLC, think again. All of that stuff are tied to your PSN account, so if you need to factory reset your PS3/Vita (for PSP, this only applies for DLC) or get a system replacement, with no PSN, your backup data is useless. Hacking your system won't be an option in the future, it will be a requirement in order to remove the PSN ID link. Even if you have physical games, you won't have any of the patches to fix bugs or any of your DLC with a stock system.
hopefully there will be DNS intercepts in the future for PSN, the same way it's now done for Wii and OUYA
@@myretronation Let's hope so.
Gaming as a whole now is really worrisome. Most Gen 7 games can still function as 1.0 (what's on the disc) with some exceptions of course but Gen 8 cannot because they've released broken and half-assed that require an update so the disc may not contain all code needed anymore. Definitive edition versions on disc would give you the best chance of getting the most complete version but even then that may not be enough. I hate the digital age. I think hacking the console and emulation on PC will be the way to go in the future.

Digital gaming is supposed to offer convenience, gamers are now learning that it's a massive inconvenience.
Digital will died with physical as well. Soon cloud gaming is all that people will have. If you think gaming gets better, nope, it'll get worst to the point where you can't even download a game to own.
@@VOAN the key feature of a game in any form is that it can be repeated, postponed and resumed.
Imagine if a football you purchased exploded after 90mins of use and you had to pay £50 if you wanted to play again, i highly doubt it would be the sport it is today.
So if cloud gaming is the future then i can see those who don't maintain their subscriptions not just losing their games but their save data too.
I will walk away as well
There needs to be a fan movement similar to the one that got Microsoft to reverse their online only design with the original Xbox One. Also I have a Series X and just was able to buy a PS5 a couple days ago and I’d like for it to continue working well into the future, at least with physical content.
Start a viral social media chain. See if it catches on and maybe Sony will say something.
Take it on Twitter put thier asses on blast so the whole Twitter community could see!! Make it spread how this Corona is spreading and I guarantee u Sony would eventually say something!! Lets start this chain ⛓ yall!!👌👌
PS5 has a battery too.
I love buying physical - I love having stuff on the shelves. But I tend to find that I’ll sell off the stuff I don’t want to play anymore - which is most games, if someone buys them. I often regret selling my Retro stuff, but if I think about it, it’s only because of the perceived values by today’s BIN prices. I do wish I’d not sold my NES stuff but, then, that’s how I ended up funding future console purchases so I guess we can’t have it all ways.
I go into digital purchases eyes wide open, but I only really buy digital when there’s a sale on and ill usually only buy at launch if it’s something I really want.
Your view point is vitally important for sure, and it’s reminded me that I’ll need to organise an external hd to store my Xbox collection when the time comes... and pray that they still run if I want to play them.
However, I’m thoroughly loving the benefits I get from gamepass and seeing if I can stick to just playing games in that eco system. We’ll see if I can stick it.
I’ll buy the games I’d want to replay if they ever leave game pass - and physical stuff is always findable.
But, I think, for the future - I’m happy with gamepass and building up my NeS and Amiga collections. Those boxes look awesome on the shelves. Modern dvd cases really aren’t that interesting to me,
I have no doubt that these announcements and discoveries are going to hurt Sony in the long run. Apparently even developers still working on Vita games were not informed of the store closing - some purchased a Vita Dev kit as early as a few weeks before the announcement! It's left developers to either cancel upcoming games or scramble around the clock to get them finished on time for an extremely limited release. You can see what this will lead to: developers will refuse to make games on PS5; a lot of PS5 Digital Edition preorders will be cancelled; hell, maybe even physical PS5s will be returned or preorders cancelled out of fear of being left with a brick, be it the PSN shutting down or the battery dying. All Sony had to do was release a firmware update on PS4 and PS5 that installs emulators for PS3, PSP and Vita and then bring that back catalog of games over to the next gen console. If PS4 and PS5 users had access to that digital library, there would be a hell of a lot more purchases.
I can't stress the importance of changing your PS3 CMOS battery before the 21 July deadline! This should buy your consoles a couple of years while we wait for the jailbreak/homebrew communities to catch up.
It's not that hard to do, the iFixit teardowns are really helpful.
Where would I buy one of the batteries?
Jackson Jacob right
The IFixit tutorials are indeed very helpful. I just looked at them and how complex the whole process is, now I’m wondering what is more dangerous to the console....the battery or me hoping I don’t accidentally break something! May not much of a choice. Though doubtful, but sure wish Sony would also patch these old PlayStation 3 consoles too.

Arrogant Sony is coming back. I stand by my views that the PS4 was a fluke that directly benefitted from the failings of Microsoft PR.
While I think Xbox is a more appealing option for legacy content, I still think the platform is far too dependent on an internet connection.
It's just sad that we will reach a point where owning software isn't truly possible anymore. Even the switch relies on downloads too much.
Sadly yes, arrogant Sony is back with a vengeance but Xbox is not the savior in this situation... Yes, they are doing a better job than Sony with legacy content, but... And this is a MASSIVE BUT, Series X|S need an internet connection just to setup so...
@@jcsandrea I believe you can do an offline setup using a usb drive.
In Australia at least and I imagine most other countries it is not legal to enter in to commerical contracts or agreements with someone under 18yo. How do game makers circumvent these restrictions if I buy games with my pocket money as a kid?
They doing it too far even physical affected.
FUCK.
What stresses me out about the game download servers being left online is that they WERE making money off of selling old games whole running the full store. And closed purchases regardless. And now they're going to just provide free downloads of the games forever? With absolutely zero way of gaining more income from it? Nah man those download servers are going to be shut down so fast too

Well that settles it, NOT buying the PS5! Good luck SONY
This is why even physical media doesn't make much sense in modern gaming. Too much online dependency and even if this issue is fixed, you still need to download games and install patches. Hell some new games don't even come in the discs anymore. The longevity of this generation is going to be tricky and as you stated in the video, we are going to have to rely on hacking consoles just to play the old games that we purchased years ago, even if those games were purchased physically.
Not just physical, digital is also dying as well. Most games are aiming for an always online only experience or in the cloud. Games like Control and Resident Evil 7 aren't even digital on Switch, you had to pay to play them in the cloud or else they won't even work. If xCloud, Stadia, and Luna took off and cloud gaming is the future then videogames as we known it is dead.
@@VOAN yeah I know that but the reason why I mentioned physical is because when people bring up the argument of ownership they always bring up how you don't really own digital, but with physical you have something tangible that you own and have control over. And that used to be true but not anymore. Especially with this gen of gaming where games are highly dependent on patches, and updates. And yeah we also have stuff like Gamepass and streaming services but those are a completely different topic, and aren't relevant to the topic of game ownership. I think we all understand the difference between renting games or renting a games service and buying a game whether it be physical or digital. Either way, it looks like in the far future both digital and physical game owners are going to run through the same problem once the servers are off and we can't download any more updates.
Sony really seem to have a vastly different approch to their legacy hardware and software compared to Xbox. This is part of the reason I have been drifting further away from modern PS consoles despite PS1 and PS2 having most of my favourite games on. Xbox under Phil Spencer really seem to care so much more about their older games, especially with the enhancements they have added to Xbox original and 360 games to make them run even better on the One and Series X/S consoles. Just that quote from the Sony CEO shows how different they view their older games compared to Xbox where Jason Ronald the director of program management said "The team also continues to listen to feedback from the community on additional titles you would like to see added to the compatibility program. Resurrecting titles from history often presents a complex mix of technical and licensing challenges, but the team is committed to doing everything we can to continue to preserve our collective gaming legacy." I'm not saying that the Xbox approach is perfect, but at least they seem to be trying a lot harder to look after their legacy games at least.
Others have had this topic, but this is the discussion I have been waiting for. Adam will tell us. My favorite gaming channel on RUclips.
Imagine video game collecting in say 2030 for ps4 or even xbox one and they won't work because 75% of the data has to be downloaded online...... Oh there's no online support.

Man, what you said about the consoles being so dependent on online connectivity is depressing. You're 100% correct. I don't see myself buying any new consoles in the foreseeable future, since I don't see this trend changing for the better. Aside, of course, for the unfinished, microtransaction ridden games they sell us for full price, which we can't even trust will be fully playable on physical media anymore. Too much of a hassle for a pastime I used to like so much. I don't have the PS1 I had when I was a kid, but my Mega Drive works just like a charm, and it's a japanese launch model. Thanks for sharing
I completely agree with you Adam, back then when you paid for a game you got the finished product but now they give you a half baked game and have to pay for the rest of it. Any ways I enjoy your videos and think you deserve more subscribers.
As someone who was born in the year 2000 I remember renting physical games for my ps2 to play some neat games and even for movies. And growing up (still a kid) more I always enjoyed finding that rare video game in a store i’ve been looking for a long time. I prefer physical content, discs or cartridges. I prefer having it in my hands. I see video game collecting physical copies as me possessing a real piece of history of entertainment. Something I can easily hand down to my children and then down to their children and the next. It’s really a shame that we have these types of issues that even prevents us to use these discs anymore on newer hardware. I do hope to see a solution made whether it be by the fans or Sony themselves. Let’s hope for the best.
At this point I don't feel like ever buying a Playstation product anymore. If Jim Ryan tells me that I can't own my games for longer than 15 years because "Why would anyone play old games????????" then Playstation can go bankrupt for all I care.

I remember you mentioned this all the way back in 2013 in your 7th gen recap video. The point you made about being unable to reconnect to servers once they were down to re-download patches always stuck with me ever since. It is funny though that you thought that the PSN servers weren't going to last past 2016. But you were right for the most part.
I give them props for holding out this long to be honest.
I'm glad I did take his advice with that too, tracked down alot of the physical versions of 360 games that had the DLC on disc they usually also have the patches too.
I fear an online-only future for gaming FAR more than I fear a digital-only future for gaming. Both are godawful in my eyes, but I'd sooner download a game than support a title that demands you connect online even just to play its single-player story mode.
The Vita will have a longer life off network than it had on network.
"This is for the player" takes on a whole new meaning.
On archive.org someone posted all the XML files for each PS3 update package. I knocked up a Python script to extract all the URLs, download all the packages (about 1.5 TB) and then generate a DAT file so I can manage them all in something like Romcenter. I have them all on an external HDD. I might post them one day, but I'm sure someone already has.
Some of them can be merged to save a bit of space. I did this with Little Big Planet GOTY updates, it has about 10 updates and merges to one file so that it was easier for me to install updates on my modded system instead of loading every single package file one after the other. The original update data is about 1GB, the merged update package is about 250MB. Not every game has updates with that much repeated data which cause this massive compression
What happens is that, in many updates, the same files are replaced over and over, and everytime a new patch comes, a new version of the same file is bundled. converting them to cumulative updates only keeps the latest files.
@@lordeilluminati Interesting. Yeah, I hope that some day someone will compile all of these properly in one place, reduce the total size as much as possible and perhaps even have them be downloadable from a mirror on a softmodded PS3, automatically. For now, though, I can at least rest a little easy knowing I have them all backed up.
"and the PS4 and PS5 remasters, they feel nothing like I remember, like why would anybody play this?"
It's sad that we can't have backwards compatibility with games like we do with movies. You can stick a DVD that was pressed in the 90s into a modern PS5 and it will play, but not a game! You can also stick a CD that was pressed in the 1980s into an Xbox Series X and it will play (not a PS5, though). The fact we can't do that with games yet is incredible.
There were no DVDs in the 90s, DVDs launch around Y2K with the DVD Players and the PS2, GameCube, and Xbox. You also had to realize that game media doesn't work the same as movies, movies are just visuals and animation pre-recorded onto a disc, games are interactive and were program to be compatible with certain hardware in mind, if you plug in a game disc onto the wrong hardware which it won't recognize then of course it won't work. It's like comparing a picture of a screwdriver to an actual screwdriver, a picture of a screwdriver is just that a picture (it's not interactive) so it could be hang on any wall, use for anything like a sample or a blueprint but an actual screwdriver doesn't work like that you can't just buy any screwdriver and think it'll be able to take out any screws, you had to make it sure if it's flat head or philip head, buy the wrong screwdriver and you're out of luck if it's not compatible. You could use a picture of a screwdriver on any project but you can't use an actual screwdriver on any project unless you had the proper correct screws that it's compatible with.
At least with game pass and streaming game services they don’t pretend like you own the games.
They don't, but you'd be shocked how many people seem to think they do.

Right to reselling licenses depends of the country. In EU you have right to reselling software licenses even if license state that you can't.
That's a valid point.
I wish that were the case here in the States.
I have 30 year old coin batteries that still “work.” They’re extremely dangerous and bad, but they still hold a charge amazingly. I’ve desoldering them from both game carts and vintage synthesizers. Sometimes they can leak and ruin the board or explode if you desolder them.
At least on any console, these batteries are not soldered and even if they go bad, they "get a bit fat" and no more if you use from good brands like Panasonic and Maxell
Most of the time they leak because game carts have batteries soldered to the board and since they are very sensitive to heat, they can explode if you are not super careful in the process of desoldering
A good practice is to replace them for a slot similar on pc boards so you can replace them on the future without the need to desolder and solder a new one.
I hope people can do something about psn store and create something DNS and server mod and fixable or mod console with hardware mod
I wonder if it might be possible through custom firmware to bypass the CMOS bomb. Until then, ripping my games and preserving digital copies for backup on console and emulation on PC is the way to go.
This is why i like classic gaming better.
This I why I don’t really own digital games or media in general, because they can’t take away your physical copies
They could if they wanted too. Oh shit someone's kicking down my door!!!!
They can't physically take them, but as Sony has shown, they can make them unplayable.
