Absolutely agree. As a PS + user who's been on it since the beginning and never missed adding anything and have purchased a fair amount too, my download list is ridiculously long. This is the 2nd best video I've seen on this subject. All they are doing is resetting the clock. They still haven't addressed the bigger problems which you have brought up. They don't care about preservation. They saw the sales of Vita and PS3 go up suddenly and that's why they're keeping the stores open.
The only way to save PS3 and PS Vita store is that people keep buying games, otherwise the stores will probably close next year and complaints will do nothing.
I've never looked at it like that when comparing games to other media. You're right. It's no different in playing classic games and listening or watching classic movies
I suspect that didn't rile up the public because we still have access to the recorded music... but Artists were rightfully pissed because those original master recordings are gone forever. Incredibly sad.
Sony needs to move the catalogs over the PS4/PS5 store and let users store PS3/PSP/Vita games over to portable hdd's. Sony could also solve the CMOS problem with a firmware update. If not, I could see a class action lawsuit happening.

This argument can be used for ANY consumer industry. Ive already spent many thousands on gaming, mostly going to Sony so I'm not just taking without giving. As for the CMOS, that is one of the reasons i find my self disillusioned with modern gaming. I understand that steps have to be taken against piracy, but we spend all this money on games (even digital, that charge you the same price, where we should get a discount for not having manufacturing, shipping, etc., that a physical copy carries!) and consoles that are never truly ours. We seem to rent them now. Like most things nowadays on EVERYTHING. This is how they can still re-sell old games, all about the $$$ in the end. Also on the online network memberships (Xbox & PS). What if I'm tired of listening to little kids talk about my mother and would like to play single/story mode. With C-19 people lost their jobs, can't afford to play online. Why does my game have to log on to verify to let me play? I used (past tense) MS office, because I bought and used it for personal stuff (to make recipes, lists, littler stuff). Last year, with a MS windows update they took it away from me. Classy.
This is an important and huge video. Thanks for making it. We must fight and do what we can for game preservation. I'm really glad they aren't closing it down....yet.
I guess the day that big companies' heads finally REALLY understand the importance and relevance of old games, old music and old movies have for people today, things will start to change. Also, online stores and digital copies are increasingly showing the importance of physical media. I hope that the physical media market never dies, otherwise, we will always be at mercy of the fact that online stores can be closed at any time because they are no longer financially interesting for companies.
4:00 - It COULD be the same, if Sony would put full, real backwards compatibility in their consoles instead of the garbage attempt we have now. But the PS4 can only play the older games that are on its store and the PS5 easily has the power to play everything before it, but Sony chose not to include it-even as a premium option.

Ah, the Vita memory card... The arsenic that slowly killed the Vita. So unfortunate, I love that system. Aside from that, I still think it was the perfect handheld, ahead of its time.
What you said about music and movie catalogue titles is something I never thought about, and I haven't seen anyone else mention. Thanks for sharing this. I agree it's not 100% the same thing, but it's a checkmate right there.

Given the massive loss of good will and the new wave of console piracy this will usher in... I'd say you are 100% wrong. Especially as Microsoft are doing a much better job of preserving the legacy of OG Xbox/360/XB1 games in terms of back-compat and online gaming/store access. It costs peanuts to keep the PS3/Vita/PSP stores up in 2021. I doubt very much that the running costs are not fully covered by the (albeit) modest game sales revenues.

Game preservation is of paramount importance to me as a 30+yr gamer with multiple decades of games that should be available to go back to whenever and be passed on. This recent retro surge is all the proof you need to see that ... Games and consoles are works of art that have become very much a part of our history and who we are, and they need to be treated accordingly... Not to mention the amount of money, passion, time, and sheer numbers of people it takes to create some of these works of art... Only to have them be a limited time availability?! It's ridiculous! Gaming has gotten to the point where it's just as big and impactful as movies, music, and any other forms of entertainment. Arguably more so in a lot of cases. Every title, down to the crappy 0.99¢ eshop games should be fully preserved. Like I said, they're not just games anymore, they're a part of our history and who we are. Where we've been and where we're going... These companies need to be pushed into prioritizing this. They need to treat these games with the respect they deserve... The arrangement is they give us what we want and we give them our money! Well, Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo... Full game preservation is what we want!! Get it done!!

Back in the day Microsoft said that they would likely push an update to Windows XP when it reached the end of its life to remove the activation requirement. It's been 7 years since support ended and you still have to jump through hoops to activate it. Though I think it's the most ethical thing to do to remove all DRM from something once you're no longer going to support it, unfortunately that means spending time and resources which these companies just aren't going to do no matter how much the public begs them to.

Hopefully they make sales, especially on the VITA !!
Sales? They need to cut the price in half of everything.
@@Belkan2087 some of those games should be even less. US$60.00 for NBA2018? Sports games don’t hold price well, FIFA games of the previous year you can get used for 1/5 of their price for example. Most of those games are barely selling anymore, some of them have superior remastered versions on newer consoles, they should really drop prices, they would make less money per unit, but the higher sales would quickly compensate. Most PS2 games are $9.99, and that’s not bad, but I’m being selective with what I’m buying, if they were $5.99 like the PS1 titles or $5 on everything ps1 and ps2 preferably, I would buy loads more
@@Belkan2087 LOL I thought this was about software preservation?
Bingo! It even looks silly when comparing PS3 and PS Vita game prices with PS4 and PS5 titles. It's just like if an outlet store would try to sell a TV or a smartphone which is already 4-14 years old for the full retail price. Did someone simply forgot to put new price labels on this stuff? It's ridiculous...
I finally bought a PS3 back in early 2017 and was blown away by how great the sales were for digital PS3 games back then. I loaded up on so many games I missed from that gen, since I was a 360 gamer then. But jeez, the good PS3 sale prices ended that summer and have never been seen again.

Sony needs to move the catalogs over the PS4/PS5 store and let users store PS3/PSP/Vita games over to portable hdd's. Sony could also solve the CMOS problem with a firmware update. If not, I could see a class action lawsuit happening.
We may have won this battle, but the war still rages on.
Do you realize that this is a marketing stunt, they didn't want to close the stores in the first place, they did this just to increase sales, people bought a lot of games in short period of time...
@@JohnSmith-el1ct I don't think so. They genuinely wanted to shut the PS3 servers down, but everyone's panic saw an increase in sales. Keeping the stores open is just their knee jerk reaction to this.
@@JohnSmith-el1ct I mean they are still closing the PSP store. All of these online stores close eventually and it is about that time. Nintendo is already shutting down the 3DS and WiiU stores in South America so it makes sense that it's close for Sony to be doing that here as well. It's all relative based on current sales, and when these things close they expect to get more sales, but that doesn't make it a marketing stunt. If anything it was a stunt for good PR that they listened to the fans and kept things around longer. However I still think they wanted to shut things down and move on.
sony just wanted your money :(
Hyperbolism anyone?
Thanks Mr. Jesus. It's because of creators like you, who represent us, that Sony was able to listen and know that we still care about preserving the past.
Now we need a fire sale as an apology.
If not an apology, then at least a thank you for our continued loyalty. Because I am loyal, have been from a young age.
Yeah, let's put games that didn't profit enough to keep online but since a small loud vocal minority cries due to Xbox marketing propaganda and put the games even cheaper for this small % of gamers.
Ppl like you are the worst. They speak about supporting Devs but never buy a game on day one or at full price. Such hypocrisy from gamers like you with your illogical selfish lines of thought. You give 0 F's about these Devs. You just care about saving money and havng as many games as you can with the little money you want to spend on gaming. So pathetic imo
The Wii shop closing should have had a fire sale.
@@davelloyd820 So true!!
@@davelloyd820 There are literally thousands of games and even more pieces of DLC on the Ps3/Vita store. To expect me to buy every release on day 1 is foolish and unrealistic. Not to mention that not all games are of the same quality or of high priority so its reasonable to hold out buying something until its WORTH the money to you. This argument can be used for ANY consumer industry. Ive already spent many thousands on gaming, mostly going to Sony so I'm not just taking without giving. The fact is that Sony had devalued the games on the store to the point that they thought they werent worth selling. If that's the case then what's the harm in activating a big sale? its digital goods after all and only positive for sony.
5:58 thank you very much for talking about the CMOS battery issues. :)
I'm glad you mentioned they need to do more. The CMOS battery is still an issue in the hardware and this is a bandaid. I really appreciate they went back on their decision but we still need a better customer experience from them. Good on you for not cutting them more slack than they deserve
I'd like to reply to my own comment and mention I see you got the error code too! Would you mind explaining how you got around it? I can't purchase anything! 🤣

@@bsmith1220 lol did you not see the video?

Whenever your digital store is low in sales, let the people think it's going to be taken down soon. I'm sure it was the money that they recently got that changed their minds.
