      This can't be understated when given the 360s HDD limitations. I learned that I can't just format any HDD and stick it in my HDD enclosure, it has to be a specific model that I doubt is made anymore. So I'll need to solder wires and jailbreak my 360 just to upgrade a decade old and dying HDD. Ugh

      @@winlover37You can easily buy replacement hard drives. Implying you have to RGH hack a console to change it is idiotic.

    • @winlover37
      @winlover37 3 месяца назад

      @@butchdeadlift7551 If you knew anything, you'd realize the Xbox 360 only accepts a scant few types of hard drives, all of them really old and close to death at this point. You can't just grab any HDD you can find, slap it in and expect it to work. I wish it was like that on stock hardware, but it's not.

    Sony built the PS3 to be future proof and they were too successful. At the end of the PS2s lifespan it looked decrepit so I bought a PS3 at launch. Seven years later the PS3 still looks so good that I have no urge to buy a PS4

    It helped a lot that the PS2 remained relevant into 2008 with decent games. This essentially means you could keep playing PS2 until 2009 and then get an updated PS3 model for a reduced price and play all of the badass games that came out from late 2007 - mid 2009 or so.

    Great video, man. The PS3 was a hell of a machine when it launched, and even though it was big and heavy and a pain to develop for, you kinda have to give props to Sony for the sheer ambition behind it. The PS4 by comparison feels like a much more conservative console; just an incremental improvement rather than the massive leap forward that the PS3 represented. Was genuinely saddened when my original 60GB model succumbed to the yellow light of death a few weeks ago. Not a bad run for a 10 year old machine, though.

    It can be in some cases very important not only because of DLC but because of performance and bugs as well.
    Thats why physical games without day one patch are so valuable for me personally.

    honestly this is going to sound weird i know but i actually found the ps2 and ps3 interesting the weird architecture of the emotion engine cpu and the cell processor made for an interesting times. because they were hard to develop for but technically if utilized to its full potential ( At least the ps3 ) games could absolutely crush their 360 counterparts but sadly most devs never did. but still i find something charming about ps3 versions of games because even though they may look worse they all have a distinct look to them. i dont know maybe i'm weird but my point is that i miss the days when consoles had unique hardware instead of just off the shelf computer parts.. really old computer parts at that.

    Hi Adam, I've just discovered your channel in the past week and am really enjoying all of your great vids; in particular your generation recaps. I've been gaming since gen 3 so its a great nostalgia trip. My first gaming experience was when my Dad brought an Amiga 500 home one afternoon. If you ever want info on Amiga 500 or game recommendations for your Amiga CD32 let me know, cus essentialy all th games on that console had versions on the Amiga 500 too. (Amiga was a strange beast)
    I'm from the UK and I got a PS3 on launch over here and it seriously blew me away. Luckily we had Motorstorm on launch and that games graphics really blew my mind as I had it hooked up to a brand new HDTV and there was soo much detail, seemed like such a massive leap from Ps2.
    Also advanced media applications with the Blu Ray player and CD burning were icing on the cake. However the games seriously never came, until MGS4 then the Uncharted series and TLOU. Ultimately PS3 had put me off gaming until a few months ago when I picked up a Wii U. And dude that console is serious amount of fun.
    All the best

      I'm over halfway through the video, and he has just talked about the launch and how terrible the architecture choice was even if he doesn't really grasp what it was about, and he's still not done talking about it. Not saying it was a good or a bad move by Sony. :p Some of what he is talking about reminds me about digital formats cinemas have to deal with. In any case, I can already see there not being much time left for anything else. I assume he is going to mention some great exclusive games, but I got the "feeling" Adam doesn't have as close of a relationship with some of the less known exclusives for either PS2 or PS3, so I'm expecting some late in the lifetime rather popular and mainstream games to be mentioned and that's it. :p Here's for hoping I'm not looking like a total asshole. :p

    • @MMasterDE
      @MMasterDE 10 лет назад +2

      MMDE 18:25 Valkyrie Chronicles is actually a rather good action-oriented TRPG. :p I was somewhat surprised he actually mentioned VC, but I should have seen it coming seeing SEGA made it. A lot of people wanted a proper sequel of that game, but I think it got a lot of not exactly proper sequels. MGS4 was nice to mention, as it was the early console seller, the game that gave people an actual reason except for the blu-ray player to purchase the console. I do agree Back to the Future game is like a 4th movie, but kinda strange choice IMO. :p

    it may not be the best, and the Sony may have messed up its launch, but to me the ps3 was always the best, I first got one at age 11 and I was blown away by by what it could do, the majority of my friends owned 360s and laughed at me for owning a ps3, but I didn't care, my ps3 was the main part of my life, the online was amazing, and it was free, I pittied my friends for buying something I got for free, it's been several years since I got my ps3, I still have it and I still love it, although I have the 360 as well, the ps3 is the console I play the most, I have a ps4 as well but the ps4 seemed really disappointing to me, there's not a single game on the system that uses its full potential, and it's been out for 3 years now, ps3 and 360 had multiple games that looked amazing within that timescale, I really hope game developers get some ideas and begin making games, I still want a new earthbound from Nintendo, a new ssx on the ps4, and I would have said crackdown 3 on xbox one, but that's already happening :) oh well, I will still love my ps3 and hopefully the ps4 will eventually blow us all away

    I remember those early days. The only reason why I picked up the PS3 early is when I found out they were dropping Backwards compatibility so I rushed out and grabbed one as soon as I could...and the first game I got on it was Bladestorm, and I found it to be fun enough for me to beat but I never went back to it. For the longest time, most of what I played was PS1 and PS2 games.

    I started out on the PS1 when I got my first system in 1996. Since then I have had the PS2, PSP and PS3 all on launch day. I got the last PS3 preorder I could find in Pennsylvania which ended up being a 2 hour drive from my house to get. I saved the money with my paper route and then the day came and I didn't know what game to go with. I ended up with Tony Hawk Project 8 but as you said, there wasn't much to get. Eventually I got Resistance but for a long time, I didn't buy much. I ended up selling the PS3 (60GB Model) about 3 years later for $100 at Gamestop and that was the price they offered for the system, 2 controllers and 5 games. I just got bored with gaming. Last year for christmas my wife got me the Last of Us PS3 bundle after a desire to game surfaced again. I Still don't have a PS4 but now I have a big selection of games I can go buy and for cheap too! I asked for the LoU bundle because what the fuck is the point of a 12gb system? Not sure what the point of this comment was. Oh well.

    I think it's funny with the last generation. I was very pro 360 because I liked the graphics and the performance better as a whole, and PS3 had a very bad few years where nothing came out that really warranted a purchase.
    Then 2009 happened. That year had so many games that made the system worth buying, along with improving the store interface, performance upgrades, trophies and so on, made the system worth owning for me. In fact nowadays the majority of my multiplats (Aside stuff like Dead Rising 2) are on my PS3.
    Out of the three it's my favorite whereas the 360 is probably now my least since I think it started staggering at the tailend of the system's lifespan. I know you LOVE it, but I don't. But hey, an opinion is an opinion.

    • @longcat45
      @longcat45 6 лет назад +1

      Actually they removed ps2 support because it was too expensive to include ps2 hardware in the already expensive ps3. The ps2 wasn't emulated except for a few hardware components. This was way before they even had ps2 games on psn. Also all ps3 systems play ps1 games on disc.

      The PS2 was never fully emulated on the PS3. Original NTSC launch models contained both the PS2’s CPU and GPU so there was complete hardware compatibility. Later NTSC models and the original PAL models didn’t have the PS2 CPU since it could be emulated by the PS3’s Cell CPU, but still contained the PS2’s GPU since the PS3 wasn’t powerful enough to emulate both at the same time. Even later models and all Slim/Super Slim modes had neither the CPU or GPU so couldn’t run PS2 games

    I recently acquired a backwards compatible PS3. It's awesome. My main recording setup still uses a non-backwards compatible model and a PS2 though, simply because I have a bunch of lightgun games and the PS2's easier to display on HDTVs and CRTs simultaneously. I can't find it now, but I recall there was a meme image that was included in either PSW or Official PlayStation Magazine in the months leading up to the PS3's release, which perfectly symbolizes Sony's mindset going into that generation. The Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3 were all represented as stick figures. The Wii was depicted as a girl in a dress. The Xbox 360 was a stick figure with a tiny censor bar between its legs, implying it had a small penis. Whereas the PS3 was depicted as a stick figure with a censor bar hanging all the way down to its ankles.

Maybe it's my subconscious steering me away from following the popular one. Having said that my subconscious is wise enough for me not to have the x1 collection outweigh my ps4 collection. You bring up a good point at the end of the video.
    The thing I love about the PS3 is being able to do a full system backup. My profile, all my updates, DLC, games etc. I know are safely stored externally. (I hate that the PS4 doesn't do this)
    With the Xbox 360 it's a completely different story. The only thing you can back up (Minus the cloud) is game saves, but that's pretty useless if I can't back up my profile because they're linked. And unlike the PS3, downloads are linked to your profile and to your console. So once the server goes down for the 360, you better pray your HDD doesn't fail.

    Honestly the beast on the far right, or to your left in the video is what got me into gaming as a 6 year old kid, I played the odd game on the Vtech(god if you remember those)and PC, but that fat boy PS3 was my first ever game console. Let's just say I wish my fat PS3 still worked, when it broke we didn't know anyone who could fix it when it got the YLOD, granted it did last us until November 2011, but anyway I still have so many memories with this console and a working slim PS3, I loved it, it was everything for me, I loved everything about it and I had a whole lot of shit to play, I did eventually know that some people preferred the 360 but I didn't really care, the 360 felt like that dude bro console and I wasn't too keen on it, the Wii had some great games too, but I didn't care about it as much. I love both the PS4 and PS5, but nothing lives up to the PS3 for me, NOTHING.

    Excellent AK, I mean really fucking good. One of the most concise and fair rundowns of the PS3 you'll ever see. There's a definite 3rd console curse in the annals of gaming history with the PS3 it's most glaring example. After that PS2 run Sony was just so smug and full of their own PR gaga when they designed the PS3- very similar to what Microsoft did just recently with the Xbox One. I loved though how Sony took their ass whipping and made changes to the console that where able to transform the PS3 and it's lineup of games into something truly special. This later half of the PS3's run has been incredible, from the exclusive games to the way Sony has embraced this new pro developer/ pro indie business model. What is really exciting is how they took those lessons and totally went into the PS4's development blinders off, making it a console that's easy to program for, open to indies, etc.
    I got an NES for Xmas of '87 and have been gaming one way or another for as long as I can remember and I'm not bashful in saying that the PS3 is my favorite console. I know you feel that way towards the Dreamcast but watching this series so far you've been really fair and have let the history speak for itself. Great stuff man...looking forward to the Wii video. Be cool...
