    Actually, Nintendo started development of Super Mario Odyssey LITERALLY after Super Mario 3D World was released on Wii U, so technically you're right on that regard.

    I could see games like Doom and Skyrim being relatively easy to port because at its core, the Switch's hardware is little more than a glorified NVIDIA Shield Tablet.

    I would imagine that convincing Bethesda to release Skyrim on a new system is not that hard. I'm sure the conversation was like
    Nintendo: Hey Bethesda, we were wondering...
    Bethesda: You want us to port Skyrim to the Switch? Say no more.
    Nintendo: Yeah, how did you know?

    I really want to get the Switch, but I'm trying to talk myself into waiting to see if there is an upgraded model in the next couple years. I was all ready to buy the 3DS and then the announcement of the New 3DS came out and I was glad I waited. Of course I was waiting years for a newer model Wii U that never came and didn't get it until it was dead.
    First world problems suck.

      I’ve learned in my life that if you wait for something better than you’ll spend your whole life waiting. And when you do end up getting it, there will be something around the corner better. I tend to buy hardware early and wait for price drops on software. Zelda has given me 100’s of hours of enjoyment. And I have a dozen or more games from year 1 I still plan on getting. I’ll grab another 6-10 titles next Black Friday. Lol

    From what I gathered together, Odyssey never actually was in development for the WiiU.
    However(!), the updates we received with the deluxe version of Mario Kart 8 was originally supposed to be the third DLC package.
    That said, I still value the WiiU but the Switch really destroyed it once their was more than just BotW.

    • @keyboardking777
      @keyboardking777 6 лет назад +25

      I REFUSE to believe that Odyssey wasn't in development for the Wii U at one point. Nintendo just said that because they have a bruised ego about the failure of the Wii U. For god's sake, development started back in _2013!_ The Wii U was only A YEAR OLD at that point! So no, I _firmly_ believe that the game was absolutely gonna be a Wii U title, but at some point down the line, the dev team got their hands on Switch development kits and swapped everything to there.

    • @LordRayken
      @LordRayken 6 лет назад +2

      The Switch and Wii U crossover. There are intrinsic design choices that make sense for both, considering the Switch also functions like a touch screen tablet device like the Wii U had.

    • @link2dpast
      @link2dpast 6 лет назад +1

      Jackson Vasquez
      There is concrete evidence of Nintendo confirming that Odyssey was never at some point being developed for the Wii U.
      Here is a source: "comicbook.com/gaming/2018/02/26/super-mario-odyssey-nintendo-switch-wii-u-development/"

    • @keyboardking777
      @keyboardking777 6 лет назад +11

      That source is LITERALLY what I was referencing. You're gonna tell me they knew Odyssey was gonna be on Nintendo's next system when the Wii U was only a _year old?_ Horseshit. That's their bruised ego talking.

    • @SakuraAvalon
      @SakuraAvalon 6 лет назад +10

      I agree. The game even runs on a modified 3DWorld engine. And let's be honest here.
      Nintendo have lied many times. Remember, the DS isn't replacing the GameBoy and the Switch isn't replacing the Wii U.

    Regarding porting content, the Wii U was IBM power PC based architecture whereas the Switch uses an Octocore ARM baaed RISC processor which makes porting from various other platforms less complicated

  • @Ben-do1bf

    Back in 2014 Miyamoto said that he wanted the next 3D Mario to be a launch title for their next system, so while it didn't make launch obviously, Super Mario Odyssey was likely one of the few first year Switch games that was always a Switch game.

  • @VOAN
    @VOAN 6 лет назад +1

    The one key thing Nintendo did right for the Switch in its first year is this, it's all about the games. Everything regarding multimedia apps such as internet browser, Netflix, Everyone Vote Channel, Miiverse, online streaming, gimmicky peripherals (such as the Labo stuff), backwards compatibility (which no longer benefit Nintendo), etc., all took a backseat while Nintendo let loose all the games first.

  • @robd9921

    One reason I feel the switch is so successful is because of the NES and SNES classic edition. They reminded people of how great Nintendo was, and that got them interested in the Switch.

    The Switch will have a Wii shovelware phase. My concern is the storage limitation. The part physical / part download aspect of certain games does cause concern in an age where 4k gaming is where the industry is heading. Not just storage, but processing power too. I'm holding off to see if they release a revised hardware model. Otherwise, well done Nintendo on exploiting the ignorance of the casual gamer.

    The Switch to me is also a portable screen with detachable joy cons. The flip grip will improve that, but we still need an official Left Joycon with a real dpad on top and thumbstick on bottom. To me the Vita is my go to for portable handhelds. Just everything about it is great.

  • @Chase_is_a_race
    @Chase_is_a_race 5 лет назад +2

    I did not buy the Switch, I’m strictly retro with my gaming. The switch is a great idea, I’m glad nintendo went this route, I’ve always thought they should merge handheld and consoles, and Nintendo has done well. One thing people forget to mention is Sony’s 10 year plan for each console. If Microsoft or Nintendo offered a similar strategy or said “hey, we will support each console for 5 years or 8 years, guaranteed” you would see sales go up a bit from those two. We saw the GameCube, Virtual Boy, Wii U, and original Xbox have short lives, and that hurts consumers trust.

    It's crazy to see so many physical switch games stacked up. I honestly don't think I had seen the physical case to Mario Oddysey before I watched this video. I decided to be all digital for the switch before it released. The only physical copy game I have is Zelda and that because when I picked up the switch at midnight a year ago, they had stacks of Zelda and I decided to grab it so I wouldn't have to wait on it to download after I got home with it. I would absolutely hate changing gamecards. I don't have many switch games, but I love how often I have time to play it because it being portable. I have Zelda, MK8d, snakepass, oceanhorn, Mario Oddysey, yooka laylee, nba 2k18.

    Great video. Only part I thought was a little disingenuous was the comment about Nintendo not releasing a lot of games you can only get on the system. Where in fact there will probably never be another year in the Switchs lifetime where you will see Arms, Splatoon 2, Xenoblade 2, Mario Oddssedy and Mario Rabbids, all major exculsive Nintendo releases, in the same year.
    I do agree this year will mostly be ports and in the future we may get one or two 3rd party exclusive games. That's really what Nintendo needs to do. Keep building those 3rd party relationships. Too the point where they don't need all the AAA games coming out for the other systems, but make system exclusive games that can make just as much as a profit.

    Nintendo Switch use a custom Nvidia Tegra X1 (a portable version of Geforce) and can run most of engines like Unity very easy. That's why developers can make ports easy. If you think about it, DOOM 2016 is really heavy and runs on switch.

    i was really surprised to see all the steam/indie games coming out on switch. i definitely didn't expect that at all from nintendo. i don't own a switch, but if i ever had any extra money i would like to get one at least for mario/zelda.

    nice video man, and you bring up some really good points too, unlike 99% of the other youtubers who sound just like advertisers for the console

    I think the Micro SD card issue is a result of Nintendo anticipating people using the Switch primarily as a home console, meaning they'd plug a hard drive into the dock install games to that and have their favorite games on the console/micro SD card for portable play.

    As a previous n64, GBA, GameCube and original Wii owner, I have no desire to get the Nintendo Switch...can anyone guess why?

    • @steveranger55
      @steveranger55 6 лет назад +3

      Sam Sheth My guess is that you didn’t like the Wii, which is completely understandable, and you don’t trust Nintendo.

    • @bullsfan2021
      @bullsfan2021 6 лет назад +2

      n64 was my first system at 5, but since then I've grown up. All I really play any more is Forza, NBA 2k and the occasional action RPG like Fall Out 4 and the occasional shooter like COD.
      Basically I don't see a single game I'd want to play on the Switch except Breath of the Wild. Not a huge Mario fan, and Star Fox and Smash Bros are really the only other Nintendo franchises I like.

      Madness. How people differ. As a nes, SNES, n64, gamecube, Wii and WiiU owner, I bought an Xbox one, with battlefield, cods, battlefront2.. etc etc, and I got so bored of gaming. Then the switch came along and it sucked me right back in. To me it made me love games again. It made me realise I don’t care about power or the best graphics or anything. I just want to have fun. Only game on the PS4 and Xbox one era that got me loving games is GTA5. Only game I played to death on it. Whereas with Nintendo, plenty of games I play to death.

    • @randomrob3715
      @randomrob3715 6 лет назад

      Sam Sheth mario odyssey is superb. Zelda is superb. Mario kart 8 is superb, even tho I have that on the Wii 8.
      Bayonetta 2 is brilliant too and comes with Bayonetta 1. Next game I’ll be getting is Donkey Kong country when it’s out. I know it’s a port but it is one of the best platform games in years. The level design is brilliant.

    The Switch appeals to everyone. Casuals love it as this little party device that you take with you and gamers love it because it's triple A gaming on the go. Nintendo has tried for years to have a gimmick that everyone loved and they've failed. Motion controls applied to the masses but gamers were usually indifferent towards them or hate them. The Wii U gamepad appealed to no one, sure they'd get a home run like Mario Maker but 90% it was forced onto games annoyingly. The Switch has a niche that's awesome. They also, like you said, literally advertised the Switch by displaying the Wii U's inferiority. They launch this kick ass, hype beast of a game, being BOTW and show you, you can get this on the Wii U, sure. But, on the Switch you can take it on the go. Not only that but the Switch has Mario Odyssey, Wii U doesn't. They got the system into homes really quick with this method and now the people who didn't touch the Wii U (Alot of people) have these games like Mario Kart 8 for the first time. MK8D blew up like a new game because it pretty much was considering how many people didn't have a Wii U.

    That'd be amazing if they released a disc drive add-on that would allow us to play gamecube games. I already own an adapter that allows you to connect gamecube controllers to it.

    Hey Adam! I just rediscovered you after a couple years, haha. I currently go to Columbia, where you graduated. I feel like listening to your analysis is like we’re just friends having a conversation. I might get a Switch next month after E3, I’ve waited because I felt the same way you did a year ago plus I was burned by being so loyal to Nintendo with the Wii U. Great work, keep it up!

    Not a Nintendo gamer but the SNES was my first system as a kid.
    I can definitely see the similarities with the SNES and the Switch in terms of overall philosophy.
    I'm surprised they haven't done a PS4 port of Ultra Street Fighter II yet.
    I hate when they include 2 games but only 1 is on cartridge.
    You make an excellent point about the internal storage being a big problem since if you download 1 game, system update, or patch for a game, you're pretty much done in terms of internal storage so as mentioned, a large microSD card is a must if you're going to be getting more than 1 game pretty much.
    It's pretty dumb how the Switch doesn't support external drives and it doesn't even have 500 GB internal storage.
    I'm sure Nintendo will do an updated model eventually.

    Back when I first got the switch and was using it while living at home, I had a very particular method of playing Mario Odyssey at night. Though I couldn't use docked mode my TV or computer desk at night, I didn't play it in portable mode. What I did was buy a 3rd party dongle that was more streamlined than the dock, and connected it to a spare computer monitor via HDMI in the kitchen. The sound came from the switch directly, or I could use headphones. I basically cheated a way to play it's console mode in a relatively portable way. Don't use 3rd party dongles though, apparently they can brick your console now.

    The NX has been awesome!
    Can't wait to see more originals from SNK, Ubisoft, Capcom, and the long awaited Bayonette 3!
    Would die to see a Marvel or Capcom vs. SNK, "Toon" Link Zelda title, and hopefully stuff from Eidos like Tomb Raider.

    Finally up to this generation. I've been loving my Switch (purchased in Feb), and am enjoying how gaming has moved forward. I had the 360 but only really bought it for GoW. (am considering the GowXboxX since it looks reasonably priced now). Only just started looking at the games on the eshop, it's a tad overwhelming and I prefer owning the case...but the discounts! Still got your 6 years on and 2 years on to watch.
