Nintendo for sure needs to continue with the hybrid console design in the future. I used to really not like how Nintendo’s library was segregated between home console and handhelds. A handheld only system doesn’t interest me so it was disappointing to miss out on the 3DS library while the Wii U was slowly drip feeding games. The Switch was so great because you had everything consolidated in to one console.

@pyongyang gang666 Ikaruga and the Psikyo games are ports of arcade games. I'm sure there are modern indie games on the Switch eShop that are genuinely good, but the amount of shovelware that's on there does greatly overshadow the good stuff unfortunately. I'm also more of a physical collector so I will usually wait for some of these eShop games to get physical releases if they are given the opportunity.

I'd chalk up the Switch's success to a few factors: 1) flexibility 2) exclusives 3) families love it. I own a PS4 and a Switch. What I really love about the Switch is the sheer amount of content I can download and carry around if you get a massive SD card for it. It's the first gaming platform that really nailed the console experience on-the-go without eating through batteries or skimping on content.

I’m fond of the switch. I think the ability to dock it or use it as a pure handheld was genius. I didn’t fully realize that until my nephew was over with his switch and the power went out. He undocked, came into the living room. And he and my brother, then he and myself multiplayed mariokart to pass the time until the power came back on. After that I was totally sold on the Switch.

One thing Adam always mentions is a “console of choice” referring to which is your go to console for all the multiplats. This is the first generation where I don’t have one specific console for that. XBox One X is it for games I really want the beefier version of, like the new Doom. But Switch is my go to for all of the smaller and indie titles, due to the option of portable play.

Got a Switch yesterday, My whole life I've been Call Of Duty, Metal Gear Solid, Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption big budget action game type guy and it was an awakening for me to try Pokemon Home and super Mario Odyssey and Smash Bros Ultimate, especially Mario Kart 8 because the only racing games I would play would be Gran Turismo and Forza and I got to say it's one of the funnest consoles in the entire world definitely worth that $300 price! And I think that's the reason why Nintendo still around with the greats they always do something unique and different that's also fun!

I see the Switch as more of a successor to the 3DS than Wii U as I mainly play it handheld only basically home console gaming on the go. Just goes to show that the Vita could have been successful if Sony supported it more and didn't abandon it after a year.

I hope the Switch gets less stupid ports and more new games like Pikmin 4,Metroid Prime 4,Mario Oddyssey 2,and BOTW2 in 2021.I really want the Switch to be as great as the Wii U which was probably the golden age for Nintendo as far as great games and innovation go,oh and it had a lot less ports to and is better for many other reasons.
Oh and I might mention this again, but PLS due a Recap/Retrospective on the Wii U,PS4,XB1,3DS,and Vita shortly after the PS5 and XBSX come out in November like what you did with the 7th gen at the beginning of the 8th gen.But don't due a recap/retrospective on the Switch until it's successor comes out in 2023.Pls make the Wii U recap very good because it's perhaps the greatest console of all time!can't wait!

  • @DDuMas

I have a theory as to why the Switch is a "hybrid". Nintendo handhelds have single handedly supported the company since the SNES to be honest, other than the Wii of course. And their hand helds get the most 3rd party support. So the Switch is the perfect business move for Nintendo imo. Their home consoles continue to struggle with 3rd party support, their handhelds don't.
I predicted this would work out for Nintendo for that reason.

  • @nationharris

My most favourite console ever, I honestly love it. I take it to work with me and play games on my lunch break, I pick my daughter up from school and we play Mario kart or let's go Pikachu and I get home and dock it and continue the same experiences, no remote play or cloud saves. I still find it amazing that it's a 7" tablet at the end of the day and has some incredible titles on it. Thats not to say it's fairless, the OS is pretty bare bones, mines a day one unit that I've had since launch and I've had to replace the back plastic panel, one of the joy con latches and the right joycon. But I dunno, I imagine it's the same sort of feeling hardcore 3ds and/or Vita owners have with their systems, but I love this little console, I own a PS4 as well but it doesn't hold the same place in my heart the switch does.

You nailed it when you mentioned no to expect much of the Switch Pro. That now is a reality called the Switch OLED, which is basically a Switch with an OLED screen. End of story.
Nintendo isn't going to do any other major revision to the console. There's no way. All their resources will go the Switch 2 or whatever they will call it.
They should just stick to the portability and not having any schticks of any kind. Time has proven time and time and time again that whenever they try to go all over the wall trying so hard being different, it either flops completely like the Virtual Boy or comes and bites them in the arse later on badly like the Wiimote or the Gamepad.

Outside of sales I think your predictions on the Switch being a dud was on point. My Switch has been collecting dust ever since I finished the dlc of Xenoblade 2.
The library has been not good at all (for ME obviously). The games are either stuff that don't interest me or stuff I already own (or could own) on my PS4 or PC already. And I don't use the portable mode at all.

I kind of wish BOTW was released as originally intended on Wii U with the use of the Wii U Pad second screen like they did for Wind Waker HD. Then it would have easily have been the best version of BOTW, but it was intentionally gimped so the switch could take off. Switch has a lot of Wii U ports, but kind of wish XCX, Super Mario 3D World, and Yoshi's Woolley World were ported over.

Something that rarely gets discussed is Nintendo’s archaic account system and online. Their policies on cloud saves for example are anti-consumer. Look at the latest with Animal Crossing. Somehow every other company could do it without issue but not Nintendo. They are back to ‘slow drip’ releases with Switch Online classic games, something they can’t capitalize on (their legacy library) which is beyond me. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Something that hasn't been brought up in the 'generation argument' as far as I've noticed, is that most people treat the Switch as a handheld not a console. It's not even a matter of playing it docked or un-docked. Just from a design standpoint alone, the Switch is a tablet that can plug into a TV. And with the release of the Switch Lite, a handheld only model, it seems as if even Nintendo has leaned more toward viewing it as a handheld. So I don't think it even makes sense to judge it against traditional consoles when it simply has more in common with handheld systems.

As a working adult with a family, portable gaming “pick up and put down” is my lifeblood.
It’s a handheld that lets me play Witcher3, Skyrim, Metro Redux, Diablo3, Warframe, Divinity Original Sin 2, and Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate on the go.

With this being the switch's 3rd anniversary, I think it's time for me to accept that the thing will never be what I had initially hoped it would be; the ultimate Nintendo machine. By that I mean that I was hoping that Nintendo would greatly expand their "virtual console" library. What we got is the exact opposite and that's extremely disappointing. Their legacy titles offering is highly restricted and yet the flood gates are wide open when it comes to the sea of shovelware that's been afflicting the PC market for years. I wanted it to be the other way around haha

Just compare the 3ds with vita. As good as the 3ds library is the games look fuzzy as hell. Vita actually has games that look like mid range ps3 titles. Even PSP beats 3ds at times in that department.
To go from that to being able to run something like BotW is a pretty good jump. Not that I have a problem with that. I'm enjoying my switch, though I use it as a console.

Great video. The Switch is an excellent console and Gunpei Yokoi philosophy of “Lateral Thinking of Withered Technology.” lives on in the Switch.
For the future of is very exciting and their recent relationship with Microsoft looks like it’s going to grow stronger.

I've got The Witcher 3 installed on my Xbox for more than 2 years and never even finished the tutorial. I bought it 3 month ago on sale for the switch and now I play it all the times, even for a quick gwent match while commuting. If it wasn't for the portability of the Switch I wouldn't have played one of the best game of this generation.

The biggest success of Nintendo these last three years imho is the massive surge in their brand power and awareness. All of their IPs are riding on highs right now, some of them insane. Pokemon has become a phenomenon on a scale it hasn't seen in many years, Breath of the Wild has doubled the sales of the previous high water mark of the series breaking not just the 10 mil mark but the 15 mil and is headed for 20 mil. Mario Odyssey has crushed the previous record holder, surpassing 15 mil and also headed for 20 mil. Splatoon 2 is a 10 mil seller. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has doubled the sales of Xenoblade 1. Smash has blown past Brawl and Smash 4.
Basically, almost every IP with an entry on Switch is crushing records. It's honestly mindblowing. Which is also why I find investors wringing their hands over Nintendo silly. The growth in brand power is a huge deal.

The way I think of it, a console revision is a half-gen step. So, the PS4 pro or X-Box One X would be "Gen 8.5." A situation like the Switch would be a second iteration, something like "Gen 8-2."

    My concern is:
My PC has Ryzen 3700X and 5700XT
PS4 Pro and XB1X have me spoiled
Where is Switch Pro or at least an upgrade dock?? I would pay big cash for a dock that would let my Switch run at higher resolution and FPS
Zelda really needs it, and so many other Switch games chug and look blurry

I think it's the Wii, being that it was supposed to be an add-on for the GameCube is 6th gen, the Wii U, being an add-on for the Wii is 6th gen, the Switch is 7th gen as both home console and portable and the 7th Nintendo home console. PS4 Pro is a 7th gen console and Xbox One X is a 4th gen console. Nintendo have come out with a new console every 5 to 6 years, however so it's a 9th generation, the same as anyone born in 85 is a millennial apparently.

I'm actually hoping the "xbox one mentality" of the line of consoles being their last generation is put to work finally with the X Series. With them focusing on a more "Windows" ecosystem, with Xbox and PC playing hand in hand, I'm kinda hoping new more powerful hardware just... releases. No more gens, no more "console backwards compatibility". It's all X86 anyway, and it's all using the same Online systems. Personally, I've moved on to PC and Switch only, so the X Series doesn't necessarily directly affect me, but I'm wanting this to happen simply so that PC gamers don't have to wait until a gen ends to get noticeable bumps in fidelity. We live in a world where even last gen GTX 1000's series cards are more than capable of playing games like Soul Calibur XI in 4k maxed out. Even non "ti" cards. And the RTX line is rumored to be replaced soon, so we'll be THAT much far ahead than consoles. It's getting kinda pathetic tbh, and if you don't care about VR or Ray Tracing (let's be honest... not much support for big budget games for either) the extra horsepower is kinda negligible for gaming. I have a 2070 Super in one computer and a 2080 Super in another. I seriously don't get any difference in game performance for 99% of my Steam library.

xbox series X is already going to have no exclusives out of the gate, but the speculation on the value of it at launch with tech specs that will be cutting edge for a console of a few hundred vs. PC worth maybe a couple of thousand to run games as well? But a lot of it is speculation, we don't everything about the series X, but being able to play old game discs from every XBox console generation and upscaling many games is pretty good too if its true and one is a longtime XBox console owner.

I don`t understand why so many people think because Sony and Microsoft is bringing out a knew console this year, Nintendo needs a new console. Nintendo is not really competing with Sony and Microsoft that much because the Switch is partially a portable machine. And The switch advantage is that you can play games on a T.V or in portable mode, plus Nintendo has a lot of exclusives franchises that people want to buy. All that including a price drop is gonna keep the switch sales strong for at least another 2-3 years.

18:50 Not particularly, no. It's not just the numbers - which do favor it - it's the efficiency. Switch is using high end 2015 tech, PS3 and 360 were using high end 2006 tech. Nine years is a long time. Now a game designed specifically for the PS3's bizarro CPU might give it fits just because that thing was designed by space aliens but that's less a power thing and more a design thing

I hope that Sega releases either a Saturn or Dreamcast Classics version.

I think most educated gamers thought the Nintendo "NX" was gonna fail, we were all wrong. I like the Switch alot but like the 80 percent I don't play on the TV. There is something really special about docking this thing. Myself and my friends went on a trip last summer. Brought the Switch to play in the place we were staying and oh man, it almost made the trip. We've known either other for years but never really played with each other in the the same room. We even got our friend hooked on Smash, a series he never played before, That wouldn't have happened if it was a regular console, something that we would never take on a trip, but the size and portability factor is something Nintendo should keep as a main staple moving forward. My biggest complaint other than the damn thing not having a native lock screen (I mean come on, if you take it places, more than likely you're either gonna forget it somewhere or it's gonna get stolen) are the 1st party game prices, most games are still 60 dollars, even Zelda Breath of the Wild, a launch title.

"Educated gamers"? What does that even mean? I think you just mean people who dont relate to the average consumer... which, i dont know why you would even attempt to predict sales.
I knew the Wii U would fail from day one. I also knew the Switch would be successful from day one.
The "educated gamers" are a small group of arrogant elitists, who dont understand average people, which is why their predictions always fall flat.

When it come to the discussion of what generation the switch is part of I would agree with you as it is 8th gen. However one argument that could be said is that if developers are still treating the switch as a massive relevant console years after the new Sony and Microsoft systems come out and the switch is more relevant than ever, could you make the claim that it's a cross generational console? Thoughts on this idea?

  • @collegedegree8506
    @collegedegree8506 4 года назад

The only reason the Switch is massive is because of the games... every console that is big has big exclusives. The Wii U didn’t really have a lot going for it, even Nintendo kinda barely supported it. Not to mention they targeted their own devices to replace the 3DS and captured that fan base while allowing you to use a larger screen.

The Switch is definitely eighth gen. A better case can be made that the Xbox One X is ninth gen (it’s not) than for the Switch. After all, the X was a big leap from the base consoles of the start of the eighth gen. Not to mention it’s release was more recent.

  • @munozmm88

120% disagree with you on where you place this regarding its generation. Yea it's not powerful hardware wise but its provides something new to us gamers. Portability, which is not coming in the new consoles for ps5 or xbox. Therefore because it provides something new and is innovative to the home console market with its portability, its 9th gen. We've now crossed over to portability with a home console. Just because it doesnt outdo the previous console doesnt mean it's not a new generation. I still see 2017 as the start of 9th generation. We just wait for ps5 and xbox to follow now. Hell, the wii u started the 8th gen and now the switch started the 9th. End.

    • @AdamKoralik
      @AdamKoralik  4 года назад

I obviously don't agree whatsoever, but it ultimately only will matter to historians.
There's lots of generational overlap, that's normal. But what defines a new one is one part time, one part hardware. The Switch fails both tests.

  • @montehasspoken

I play mine about 40% of the time docked, mainly as I've started taking the switch up to bed to continue a play through. The hybrid aspect was what really got me onboard to buy my first console since the Wii (i'd gone over to steam and mobile gaming) due to the flexibility of it. I'd been sticking with PC releases and also Android ports on my Sheild Tablet (ironically this has the same backbone as the switch) but it was the 2-in-1 that got me to buy it, if it was just a handheld I'd not have bothered. Zelda and Mario look stunning on my tv and I think portable mode looks pretty good anyway. Obviously BOTW hooked me in but there's so many Indie / middleware titles that are great.

The switch needs to transition to the new portable console ,like the 3ds was ,and Nintendo needs to port literally everything from the catalog to it .they need to make a traditional console in the vein of the SNES ,have all the 3rd party support plus the first party stuff ,imagine something like BOTW with hardware like the Xbox one X behind it ,nvidia could use a lane to compete with AMD in the space that they occupy in the SOC area ..Nintendo WOULD have 3rd party support if the consoles weren’t so underpowered or strapped to a weird proprietary storage format
