Adam’s ability to recall the past and compare/use that knowledge to predict has always been impressive. The Game Boy comparison is strong. This video was hardware focused, I just want to add thoughts on software. With their big swing at the Mario Movie I expect Mario heavy software in the back half of 2023 with a Mario limited edition themed console release. Adam, I’ll forgive you missing last year. Cheers mate, I hope life is treating you well.
Folks like me rewatch those videos because they're good (first off, just like this one) and at least for me, to see where the console was to where it is now. Kinda like a history recap.
Waited in line in the morning for a copy of BOTW for WiiU......left with a Switch copy ;) and was ENTHRALLED. HIGHLY ADDICTED. Even though I logged way more hours in Splatoon2 than any other game to date (2000+ hrs), BOTW....on an AMAZING new HYBRID (!!!!) console....will ALWAYS be my favorite game ever. I lived in that game for months, sometimes playing 6-8hrs a day lol. History in your hands and you knew it RIGHT when you powered it on the first time. Happy Birthday to the most revolutionary game console EVER 🤘
The Gameboy lasted over 10 years till the GBA came out so Nintendo is probably going to do that. Especially since they have said they wanted this generation to last 10 years. So we need a Gameboy color soon. The important point to note with the Game boy color versus other upgrade systems is that the Game boy color got a lot of exclusive games whereas the DSi only had like 3 games and the 3ds XL only had like 6.
Horrific to think the Switch is 6 years old already...But I think you nailed it with the point that a true successor isn't coming anytime soon. There's essentially zero market pressure to do so, and historically Nintendo has never jumped ship off their successful handhelds so quickly, they keep making slight upgrades. It's just doing way too well still to just wave goodbye to it.
I don't hear people say that the OLED and bigger screen (!!) really breathed new life into the Switch. For me it really did. Splatoon3 is still blowing my mind tbh, and BOTW never looked better 😍
@@mobaby1979 that plus the awesome kickstand, using it all the time. And again yes that screen of course just in full agreement, people underestimate how amazing a consumer grade 720p OLED screen looks like at that size / distance. Immediately spoiled the steam deck for me, I hate to say it (still rooting for it, waiting for a *much* smaller ARM based “miracle” tech successor). (OLED) Switch continues to be my favourite platform by far.
They could release the successor on October 18, 2025 to commemorate the anniversary of the original NES release date 40 years prior. Fits the timelines perfectly too.
This GameCube direction I can totally see happening further. We already know that Wind Waker and Twilight Princess would be absolute givens considering, well, GameCube, but also simply porting the Wii U HD releases of them. Definitely the two biggest and most obvious examples I see
I love that GameBoy/GameBoy Color upgrade model idea you posed, I think you’re really on to something with that. Thanks for always making these, Adam, I’ve enjoyed them for many years now
The retention of the Original Wii was abysmal. Some signs that the Wii users would not stick with the Wii u. It is clear to see why they moved on after 7 years, but with the switch, it seems to be a greater attachment to the device. I give the thing 9 years of official support, meaning they send new consoles to the stores. But the next year is the last we will see first-party games on the switch. Maybe a Kirby or another small game on the 8th year.
I know that this is from nine months ago and I’m a new switch user. I got the Mario red edition which owed and I’m absolutely loving it. In fact I haven’t felt this attached to a console probably since my mega drive I really really like my switch, it’s such an awesome system, and I’ve already amassed nearly 25 games for it already, and I love the Nintendo online expansion, so I get to play all the classic N64 GameBoy advance and SNES games. I also like it portability and versatility where I can play in docked In handheld mode, which is how I play my switch, mostly because of that gorgeous OLED screen, Super Mario, Odyssey, and super Mario Bros, wonder and breath of the wild looks stunning on the OLED screed.
Great thoughts as always! I've got great memories of playing Smash Melee and FIFA on the GameCube with my college roommates. We also had a PS2 at our house but the GameCube saw the most action by far. I'd love to see more GC content on the Switch. I think GC games can be too easily "remastered" and marketed as a full price game so I don't see GC games being included in a Switch online membership. I have a Switch OLED but I would seriously consider buying a special edition GC-themed Switch (target market right here).
Simply upscaling those games without new textures would not do these games justice. Most N64 games are way to low poly with way too simple textures, so you probably need proper remakes like the 3DS Ocarina game.
The retro game service on the Wii and Wii U was called Virtual Console. But you actually bought each game individually on there and technically 'owned' them rather than the Netflix style service we have now on NSO. Strangely enough the original VC on the Wii was probably the best one. It had the largest selection of games and the most supported consoles including the Master System and TurboGrafx-16. It even had amazing TurboGrafx-16 gems like Castlevania: Rondo of Blood and Lords of Thunder. I agree with you 100% on the Switch. Having an absolutely gigantic install base like the Switch has is a very rare thing so they want to milk it for all its worth as that is a shit ton of people to sell software to. I think this is why they made a sequel to Breath of the Wild for it, another Splatoon and why they're making a bunch of new DLC for the 9 year old(!!) Mario Kart 8. They know the next MK is still a long ways away with the Switch successor so they decided to add 48 more courses to tide people over. Some kind of upgraded model akin to the Gameboy Color also seems likely. Mostly just to appease 3rd party developers who are probably always complaining to Nintendo about the Switch's dated hardware. Metroid Prime Remastered also shows what that dated hardware is still capable of in the right hands. Really incredible stuff, amazing that old Tegra X1 can do that.
Honestly I'm sure whenever the next Nintendo console comes out they may just re-release Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with the Booster Course pass included and call it the MK8 Super Deluxe Edition or Booster Edition. As for retro games, I wish Nintendo took the Microsoft approach and just let us buy the games outright and offer a discount for each title if we have an NSO subscription.
@@harryg2453 I'm not saying they'd be competitive with the PS5 or series X, but it might be surprising what is possible with more modern Nvidia hardware...
@@SamMcDonald83 My main issue is that they charge for technology that's not even on par with an OG xbox one in terms of graphical power. And switch games can be double or triple the cost of the 3rd party equivalent games on the ps and xbox which will do 4k 60fps or more and the switch can't even handle 1080p or 60fps. So it costs more and you get an inferior product. Doesn't make sense to me.
@@harryg2453 yeah I think that was kinda the point in the video, modern Nintendo basically doesn't want to include the most high end tech in their consoles. If you want that look elsewhere I guess🤷🏼♂️
Im of the opinion that the Switch OLED was already that gameboy color model you mentioned. Better screen/speakers and improved build quality, $50 bucks more for a a more premium crowd etc.
The gamecube thing feels spot on considering how expensive 2nd hand cube titles are getting these days, and I cant see them changing the hardware unless something dramatic happens. I'm hype for new switch possibilities and the fact its having a long life with many very well running titles makes me want to pursue a 2nd switch just for fun if they do one gcn style like you were saying ill be part of the problem and get it lol
I agree with you gameboy color style theory, however, I personally think that's what the OLED was meant to be, it likely would have had slightly improved hardware were it not for the chip shortage of the time. If the next system was to be like the color, I don't believe Nintendo would be so open about this year being light on games
I agree with you, I don’t think a successor to the Switch is coming anytime soon. The system is doing so well, what’s the point for Nintendo to risk all that? I’m happy with that, since I’m still very satisfied with my OG Switch model. Great video, Adam, I’m looking forward to a new travel vid tomorrow!
They still sell the original model just as a V2 of it. I just bought me one back the other day, I didn’t get the OLED because I’m mainly gonna play it docked. Also agreed Switch 2 isn’t coming anytime 🔜! All 3 models sell incredibly well still.
I believe it's been announced that the chip inside the Switch, the Tegra X1 is no longer in production. The console has a ticking clock. Yeah they have tens of millions of Tegras still but those will run out eventually. I dunno if Nintendo could really stretch that supply to outsell the PS2.
Finally thank u man I love your console’s anniversary’s they mad underrated and I’m finally gonna start collecting digital games for my switch 6 years wow time sure fly’s
Idea: Do more Gamecube remasters and start with StarFox Adventures Remastered. Release with added bonus levels flying the arwing. Then if it does great in sales, greenlight a part 2 with expanded story and gameplay and multiple playable characters each with unique level mechanics ie: Fox is the baseline obviously and just give Krystal adjustments in speed and strength, Peppy levels play like stealth, Falco maybe has timed gaunlet element to parts his stages to utilize his speed, and Slippy can a glass cannon overall build that has QTE elements in his control scheme when in combat making him feel very unique from the others. Now you can start spinning out squeals to all the good Gamecube games by making them great!
As a born in '88 millennial myself who also buys into nostalgia, I really hope that GameCube does come to Nintendo Switch Online in the near-ish future.
17:16 that's an interesting point, TV screens are taking a new direction with quantum dots and organic cells. I wouldn't use an OLED on an irreplaceable handheld. That was a very strange decision Nintendo made with the Pro variant. A more stable option would be more traditional like LCDs, however 720p LED still kinda sucks. I think since LED technology has become so cheap, Nintendo might use either QLED or just plain high quality IPS 1080p HDR 8 bit+FRC screens now that they're incredibly available, and maybe docked 4K upscaling.
Back in the 80s, so many 60s artists were on the boomer nostalgia bandwagon. People like Steve Winwood and the Travelling Willburys' (a multigenerational supergroup with ex Beatle George Harrison and friends) basically built their whole latter day careers on Motown and Beatlesque nostalgia. Because the 50s and 60s were such an unprecedented time for the music industry , just as 1985-2000 something was for games.
Best chance ever to dethrone PS2 ? It's doubtful, DS had really good chance, and was 20M more in the same point in time, however they quickly announced and released 3DS, but if they wanted to, they could wait at least year or two with the 3DS (since DS had very good 20M year in 2010) and prolong the DS life and sales a little more, and it would pass the PS2, But they didn't.
I absolutely love my switch. I've been importing games everywhere from Europe, Japan parts of Asia & etc. There's just so many games. It's the perfect system for me. So many rpgs, indie games & solid first party exclusives. It hasn't been perfect as I wouldn't call the console the best system for online multiplayer & I don't think the prices for Nintendo online especially the expansion pack are not worth for what you get.
I'm surprised at this point we haven't gotten a Nintendo version of the PlayStation TV. I bet that because they wouldn't have to pay for a LCD panel that they could make it cheaper than the switch light.
glad you made this. i keep wondering what nintendo is going to do next, and when it's going to do it. i have 141 Switch games, and i have lots of great memories with this thing, BUT, it's time to move on.
According to some stuff from an Activision Blizzard lawsuit mentions COD is coming to Switch and when refering to nintendo platforms directly. They're cooking something, maybe an announcement this year? Hard to say.
Remember Nintendo is relying on third parties for their chip production, so that's where any reliable information on upcoming Nintendo hardware will come from. There were reliable outlets (especially Digital Foundry who knows a lot of developers and hardware people) who reported that Nintendo told Switch developers that a Switch with 4k and DLSS capability was in the works , but it got cancelled because of the chip shortage. The Nvidia leak revealed a Tegra successor that is more powerful (think base PS4 level) so I think it's plausible Nintendo uses that chip or something based on it . With PS4 level graphics and DLSS capability we can have some solid looking games. The Switch OLED uses an upgraded version of the original Tegra for better battery life and thermal performance , so I think Nintendo is fine with upgrading hardware.
@@AdamKoralik Also side note about your re-decal a switch like a gamecube for millennials that woud totally work. I took my Switch into an office of younger people and the younger people Early 20's were like I love the Switch. I loaded up the gameboy games and they were amazed. They also all asked why they were in green which made me laugh.
I have a strong gut feeling that Nintendo will likely stick to hardware similar to the Switch for the foreseeable future. What I really love about it is the fact that they now can consolidate their handheld and console games into a single platform. As a consumer, it’s a godsend not to have to buy two separate devices in order to play all the games I want to play. I imagine for Nintendo it’s also a huge weight off their shoulders not having to market two systems simultaneously. I think it’s paramount that the next console be backwards compatible with the Switch. Having an already great library of games be accessible right off the bat along with new titles make for a much more enticing system. As for NSO and the Gamecube; I feel that the overwhelming majority of games from that era are sophisticated enough to warrant the effort of remastering them, as opposed to simple emulation.
i believe that the major update may come in the form of a dock! with a chip that enables super resolution or DLSS to improve graphics and frame rates in docked mode. because portable mode is just perfect the way it is. We can't see higher resolution in the portable screen, it's just not confortable to read text in higher resolutions in portable screen. but the dock with DLSS is the closest to a switch pro, without making the general public feel that they've been left out
It is just not possible because the video output is very barebones and the console is not intended in any way to have a external chip helping with processing power. On the best case it can have something like a Marseille upscaler built in, something to "beautify" the image quality, but improving framerates is impossible. If the console had something like a proprietary protocol or something like Thunderbolt it could had a dock that improved the performance like Macbooks can use external GPUs.
This is what I hoped for, when the rumors were going around before the reveal of the current Switch. Except in more of a traditional console factor, with even slightly bigger cartridges. More along the lines of what NEC did with the Turbo Grafx 16 and the Turbo Express.
On your point about market pressure, I think systems like the Steam Deck are creating that. One of the early selling points for the switch used to be that it was the only proper way to get AAA gaming on the go. The deck definitely took that away imo
Slightly agree. Although, the Switch has those 1st party Nintendo titles that the Deck doesn’t have. If you’re in to those and can look past performance
In my eyes the Wii U is a repeat of the GameCube and the Switch is a repeat of the Wii. A console that sold badly yet had great games but forced Nintendo to completely rethink it with the Blue Ocean strategy so both the Wii and the Switch became massive successes.
You hit the nail on the "Gameboy" model. I always noticed from the design philosophy, and the way it's advertised that from Nintendo's POV the Switch isn't a home console you can play portably; it's a handheld you can plug to your TV. The fact they made a handheld-only version of it and one with a better screen kinda supports that. And it's very possible that's how most consumers use it as well, since they wouldn't do these without any backup from statistics. On your claim on GameCube ports on the Switch, that could probably extend to PS2, or even Dreamcast (tho the Dreamcast stuff could only be a one-time collection).
I think a upgraded switch will come sooner than later as in maybe an announcement this year. My understanding the carts have storage issues I don't think it would be too different from what we have now just upgraded in certain areas kinda like a phone upgrade.
Just bought an OLED Switch last week, so expect an announcement for a Switch 2 by the middle of next week 😂 Love those recap and predictions videos, btw!
I get not wanting to speculate, but the 4chan post was way too specific and accurate to not believe that the switch will be getting an upgrade/successor later this year. I thought it might drop with zelda but dropping it later and showing off upgraded visuals for previous games (zelda/pokemon) makes a lot of sense.
I agree everything you said about pushing gamecube. I think they will also do a OLED Tears of the Kingdom branded Switch, and why not double down on a Gamecube Classic and charge $150 for it. Everyone will be jumping at the chance to own ALL OF THE ABOVE.
I think Nintendo is not going to make a "switch color" like GBC it was litarally was GB with colors its almost the same hardware. I think it will be more like a "switch advance". A switch on steroids but yet a new console and just like the GBA with full backwards compatability but with the same basics from previous console. What do you think of my theory Adam ?
The Steam Deck has basically replaced the Switch in my gaming rotation. The Switch has been relagated to exclusives where it was once my defacto Indies machine.
Hi Adam your videos are great and we love these birthday videos because they are always a good source of info! Thanks for making videos I always use you as a reference when I need info about older games consoles.
It is sad to see how much Nintendo has changed in 6 years. With the Wii U, the focus was on the first party games and using their quality to save the console sales. With the Switch the focus is on the marketing, on selling the same console over and over with different color combinations, on re-selling every Wii U game at full price, on renting emulated games behind an expensive subscription. Everything is more expensive than on the Wii U, everything you buy these days feels like a bit, or a lot, like a ripoff. Because, as you said very well, the typical Nintendo customer "will buy it anyway" and Nintendo is counting, now more than ever, on that. Times have changed.
> "re-selling every Wii U game at full price" Yeah, that's pretty weaksauce. I remember back on PS3 a PS2 re-release would only cost 10-15 bucks. Hell, the Nathan Drake Collection on PS4 was $60. That's still $20 per game instead of $60. And the price of Playstation and Xbox games actually lowers over time. Imagine that.
As a Wii U owner, that generation sucked. Many of the games were fine, but none of them ever panned out to be games where I felt "glad" for owning the system. The Wii U saw no exclusive Zelda game, no Metroid games, and the mainline entries to their longtime franchises such as Mario and Smash Bros. were… fine. But again, nothing spectacular. I was much happier with their Wii lineup, to be perfectly honest. The Switch launched with one of the best Zelda games, it gave me a Mario game that I'd been waiting over a decade for (Super Mario Odyssey), it saw the first mainline Metroid game since Metroid Fusion (a 19 year gap), not to mention the remastered version of Metroid Prime, and it saw a far more consistent lineup of games. No, I'm not going to defend them pulling shit like charging $60 for Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze on Switch when it was $50 on Wii U, but I'd much rather take today's Nintendo over what we had in the Wii U era. Wii U era was just downright depressing.
@@PianistTanooki Honestly speaking, for Zelda you were covered. Apart from Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, Breathe of the Wild was developed first and foremost for the Wii U and ported to the Switch at the last minute. The Wii U is the console with most Zelda games available. I understand you had to wait the end of the console cycle for an original game, but it was at least worth the wait. Bayonetta 2, the best game in the series, made me glad to own the console. Same happened when MK8 came out (original MK games on Switch are still missing). SM Odyssey is very good, indeed, but we had Super Mario 3D world which was just as excellent. If you look at the amount of original first party titles that came out during the Wii U era, you will notice they were significantly more than on the Switch. I was more than happy that Metroid came back on the Switch, but during the years before we saw mostly remasters or ports (BOTW) rather than original exclusive games. If you looked at the top selling games on the Switch, during the first years, you would find Wii U games at the top of the ranking. My biggest complaint about the Wii U is the lack of JRPGs (Xenoblade X and very little more) and the third party support (Square-Enix) to bring them to the console. In this regard the Switch made a better job for sure. Never the less, during the Wii U years, I felt Nintendo put us, the hardcore gamers, at the center of their plans. They tried to rip us off with the Amiibo or the DLCs of Super Smash Bros, sure, but for the most part they didnt treat us like walking ATMs. Can you say the same of the current Nintendo?
You're speaking fire bombs of TRUTH! Thank you! Nintendo abandoned the console market after the Wii, there just wasn't enough room for 3 power hungry consoles. Nintendo pivoted and focused on handhelds, the 2017 result was the Switch. And you're correct about the timing about the "new Switch". It'll be another handheld that'll be able to run ported PS4 games, because PS4 games will be 10 years old technology in 2024 with affordable chipsets etc for a portable market.
My guess for what’s next is ether a dsi scenario or a xl version of the console. They include a barely upgraded cpu and more ram to run some games slightly better but that’s about it.
Some bold predictions here! I love your vids so I'm not going to be dismissive as that strategy makes a lot of sense, but I also don't know if it's what's going to happen. From my perspective, the fact that we know from official Nvidia documentation that the piece of silicon for the next Nintendo system exists and is basically ready to go casts some doubt on the 2025/2026 release. Sure they could sit on it for a few years but I think they've already done that honestly. There is nothing "GBC" like (jump from Tegra X1)as far as Nvidia chips go. The next point is financial, as now that the Switch sales have peaked, financial analysts are pulling their buy ratings from Nintendo and as the PS5 shortage has abated, a *huge* number of people are going to experience next gen graphics and framerate for the first time and their switch is going to start collecting dust. Metroid Prime remaster was great and will be a huge hit, but sparking the sellout success of the Switch is a high I think Nintendo wants to ride at all costs and that won't come from Gamecube nostalgia, and I say that as a die hard GCN fan. I believe we get a Switch successor announcement by the end of the year and a release early 2024. Zelda will bookend the system as far as major releases go, and Nintendo can ignite their library with paid next gen conversions (DX titles) like Sony has been doing for various PS5 titles.
Yeah make sense. As a die-hard SEGA fan I would say , Gamecube needs more love and respect . One of The reason I have 2 Wii u in my small collection is because of GameCube's awesome games run natively through HDMI .( There is not much GC systems in our country and I can't even find a OEM controller for my Wii u's GC adaptor to feel THE original feel of the system )
My predictions have been spot on. I predicted they would put out a new switch console every other year. And they did that. I still think it's consistent to think they will launch a new switch this November.
13:28 March 1st Nvidia was hacked, we did see Switch's successor Tegra chip called T239. In Linux Kernel we saw that that Tegra chip completed design and engineer samples have existed since April 2022 with the chip physically ready for production in August 2022. This isn't rumors, the Linux Kernel updates are public knowledge, and that chip is in the Nvidia hack's new NVN(2) API which is Nvidia's custom API for Nintendo. Outside of that, it is all rumors.
I love how you dissected the topic realistically. I admit that I am not seeing many people predict the Switch sunsetting as the flagship console in 2026. But your points make so much sense. There was one other notable figure that I wanted to touch on: the Switch has seen year-over-year declines the last few years, but those declines are from such a high peak that FY 2024 is still expected to sell 15 million consoles. And if you project a similar decline for FY 2025, then that’s still 10-11 million units. If you look back on Wii sales, Nintendo didn’t decide to release the Wii U until Wii sales fell to 1.5 million units a QUARTER! And the Switch sales are no where near there yet. I was was projecting a next gen release in mid to late 2025, while you were projecting a 2026 release amid the release of Switch console variants. There is actually facts to back up your data. Nintendo was able to temporarily blunt (and even reverse) its sales declines with the release of the Zelda “TOTK” console variant, so it’s reasonable to assume that the release of a few more Switch variants can allow Nintendo to squeeze out another year of 10+ million units into 2026. Let’s keep things in perspective though; this won’t be easy and it will be amazing if Nintendo can actually accomplish this. Who knows if Nintendo will ever get this close to beating the PS2 worldwide sales soon. They are reaching for the stars, but it’s a realistic possibility.
I definitely don't see the switch going away anytime soon although I have noticed the big triple a games are slowing down a bit at least for now. I really like the switch but yeah man it really could use a boost in power, it's got some ancient hardware in it
With the Gamecube is more worthwhile making remasters and HD Ports rather than having a Virtual Console. Period. I have strong bets on not having a Gamecube Virtual console. Plus is exactly when games became complex enough to have to go game by game when making emulators at that point why emulate, you can resell the game as Metroid Prime HD. and it will have an extremely greater range than a virtual console has.
@@Maurice.L.235 Sony/Pioneer/etc DVD players were £400. Budget DVD players were £150. Some people may have ended up using PS2s more to watch DVDs than play games. But the PS2 was never a cheap DVD player. There were always players available at half the price. The PS3 on the other hand, was the second cheapest blu ray player at launch in the UK. What HiFi reviewed all 5 available blu ray players at the time.
I think the biggest factor that'll decide when it comes out is when Nvidia next SOC is ready. If they have a new chip that supports DLSS3, is backwards compatible and power efficient it'll be a pretty big jump in specs. The upscaling and image reconstruction will allow games to look pretty good on 4k tv's. The Nvidia Shield with Tegra came out in 2015. They can easily market a new console as another generation.
100% on point Adam. I see Nintendo just upgrading the switch and making every other game from the switch forward to be backwards compatible. You keep your installed fanbase happy and continue the Hybrid Home/portable console aspect in tact. How many versions of the DS came out over the years that extended the lifespan? Same thing will happen with the Switch.
I like what you say here. I looked at the OLED model as the Colour. You are completely right about them wanting to dethrone the PS2. I do think the price is getting a bit hard to stomach at this point.
Dokapon kingdom is coming out for it again too. It was weird, I was telling my friend that I wanted to do a playthrough of it with him, then decided to look it up to see if anything like that was happening. Turns out, yes it is. And soon.
1:07 Adam, I am the one watching the generation videos, as well as the pick-ups and these console birthday videos. The GameCube was the LAST console I ever pre-ordered. The GameCube was the last Nintendo console I bought, so no I do not own a Switch, Wii or Wii U.
If I recall correctly, back in the Mid-90s, 3rd party Game Boy developers were constantly begging, PLEADING with Nintendo to make a colorized Game Boy because it was difficult working on a black and white screen & in 1998 Nintendo finally gave in to them with the Game Boy Color.
I totally agree with you . Switch is here to stay . Another solid reason is releasing Zelda tears of kingdom for Switch and not saving it for next console .
7 years seems to be the standard for a console lifespan before a next-gen upgrade come about these days, honestly. PS3 & 360 both had a 7-8 year time-frame before their successors came out, & then it was 7 years from when the PS5 & Series S/X came out from when the PS4 & Xbone came out. That seems to be about the length the Switch will go unless something changes.
I think you nailed it on the head on many points. I too, don't think the Switch is going away anytime soon and personally, I'm fine with that. I'm still enjoying it and although I also have an Xbox Series X, the Switch is still the most played console at home with my family. I also think that Nintendo is gunning for the top sales spot that the PS2 currently has and the Switch is the console that can get them there. The G.C. remasters theory is really good and like you said about Metroid Prime, the market is definitely there for it. A few more remasters to keep people coming back and driving sales, different iterations of the console (collectors eat that up) or maybe release all new games on past franchises that people have been asking for (F-Zero anyone?!?). They still have alot of aces up their sleeves for this console to keep it relevant and I'm all for it. I think the OLED model is the "Gameboy Color" version of this console and unless they release a true "PRO" model of the Switch, with more horsepower under the hood, I believe they'll just stick to different versions/skins for it.
I don't use handhelds (just not for me) so I'm still waiting for a stand alone switch that just connects to the tv like the ps tv for the exclusives. If we can have a full handheld only in the lite, then i think we should be able to have a tv only one too. Integrate the dock, remove the screen, battery and joycons. Throw in a pro controller.
This will work. I think the current switch works so well because you’re given a choice of whether you want to play docked or handheld mode or tablet mode or tabletop mode as they call it. Why should we have choice removed because you don’t like handhelds? Your idea of an Nintendo Switch, the only connect to the TV will not come to fruition for me to switch lite it’s fine, not for me only for those that prefer the smaller screen and to be completely handheld, then the switch light makes a lot more sense than your switch tv.
Remember some old interview, maybe it was mr. Furukawa who mentioned how Nintendo had plans for Switch at least eight years worth of support? It was maybe on 2018 or 2019? Not sure and I cannot find it anymore. For that reason my prediction is that somekind of upgrade might hit shelves march 2025. Maybe similar upgrade that n3ds did compared to the regular 3ds. But to make this thing to work, Nintendo still needs to continue the support all the way. Really hoping that they would have courage to release new games to IPs they haven't done on Switch yet, like Kid Icarus, Wave Race, Star Fox, F-Zero or Pilotwings. The 3rd party support is getting thinner probably, less and less new demanding games that Switch just cannot handle well enough. I am kinda worried if more and more games will release as an cloud version on Switch, that would make consumers vote with their wallets.
My guess is a VR headset for an updated model of the switch. Comes with a new dock that connects to a headset - it'd have to have more powerful hardware for the VR, which could mean native higher resolution for TVs & still plays switch games. Even if the VR aspect falls off in interest like the 3D of the 3DS did, you still get updated hardware that's backwards compatible, similar overall to the 3DS upgrade from the DS. I feel nintendo focuses strongly on 'delivering a new kind of experience' with each new device to justify the hardware upgrade, and this seems like a likely fit to me.
I would happily buy a Switch ‘box’ similar to the PS Vita TV. So a little box, no screen, bundled with a pro controller, that is made to play at home only. They can make that look like a mini GC or an N64 or whatever to satisfy nostalgia too.
I think Nintendo can do more with the Switch than just design; They can licence and release different joycons; joycons which are shaped like the GameCube Controller, Dreamcast Controller, even Xbox Controller if Microsoft were on board! They could sell Switch consoles as these themes too; “Dreamcast Switch”, “Xbox Switch”. You know collectors would buy every single one of them! You make a great point about the Switch being like the GameBoy, before this video I was convinced they delayed releasing a new console because of Covid but your explanation makes more sense.
The problem i see with a Switch online gamecube edition is the size of the games. It was the first nintendo system with a cd drive, and all of the games were 1.4 gb or something in size. Put a whole bunch of them on the Switch, and there goes your 32 gb internal memory, and it forces ppl to buy an external memory card for that specific luxury. Granted most ppl probably have one already, but I'm not sure if nintendo wants to force ppl into doing it for their service. I think with the success of Metroid Prime, they will go the "remastered" route. Plus they can sell a bunch of old games for 40 bucks each instead of bundling it with their premium service. As far as a Switch Pro Plus U or whatever it will be called, I agree that it should have 1080p native with games running at 60 fps. I know for me, I would much rather have higher framerate than high resolution. I can't see a handheld being able to output 4k just yet. In the meantime, The resolution can be upscaled with the 4k gamer pro, and it does a decent enough job. Not worth the asking price IMO. But when the Retrotink 4k eventually drops, it will certainly change all that. But I don't think nintendo is in a rush because the thing is still selling. Overall great video and good points Adam.
I'm still in love with the switch for as weak as it is. Whatever the next console is, it NEEDS to be backwards compatible. I'd hate to lose access to the massive switch library in the future.
I do actually watch old anniversary console videos.... But idk why... About the Switch, i kind of agree on your vision, i think they will keep it like they did with 3DS, with just small "NEW" models coming; Lite, OLED and probably a new version in 2024. Where i disagree is in the 3rd party games, they were complaining about switch power but still supporting for some time, but i think that's over, the gap since Series/PS5 came up is too big and people/devs already accept it, they don't even try anymore. Nobody is surprise anymore when new games doesn't have Switch version.
25:22 also during that time, you also poo-poo'd the VM Labs NuOn, the Mattel Hyperscan, the Nokia N-Gage, the Bandai Playdia, and the Sega Pico, but we don't bring any of that up
I could see a PSTV-like 3rd model of the switch which basically removes the screen and directly connects to the TV with a couple slots for multiple Switch Carts. A lot of people already only use the Pro controller so it basically could save on cost with no screen, but allow a streamlined video output for home use only.
I truly do think that the Switch will outsell the PS2 if they release an upgraded Switch and keep momentum going. I mean they are currently at 122 Million and the PS2 sold 158 Million.
20:14 The applecore had seeds that grew a tree that then bore fruit made into hard cider that someone got drunk off of and that's how someone got the idea that Goldeneye 64 is better than Perfect Dark
I've chosen not to support the switch for personal reasons, but the GameCube is arguably my favorite console oat alongside the Ps2, and my all time favorite video game is F-Zero GX, if they remaster or remake that...I may have to cave to support the release.
This is my favourite series, its so important to document Console history like you doing, amazing work 👏
The GOAT is back!
Same here.
Heyyy nice Undertale / Deltarune pfp!
Six years went by so fast! Does not feel like it was that long ago I was excited for breath of the wild!
I know right? It only gets faster.
@@mobaby1979 That's awesome! I'm glad to hear you had a great gaming experience with Zelda! Those experiences is what makes gaming special 😺
That was the reason I bought the switch because of that immersive gameplay of Zelda and never played it that way since the N64 for Ocerina of Time.
Fits the timelines perfectly too.
absolutely!
Exactly
duddee brilliant
Or they could release it on july 15, 2023 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the famicom.
Say too late
This GameCube direction I can totally see happening further. We already know that Wind Waker and Twilight Princess would be absolute givens considering, well, GameCube, but also simply porting the Wii U HD releases of them. Definitely the two biggest and most obvious examples I see
I love that GameBoy/GameBoy Color upgrade model idea you posed, I think you’re really on to something with that. Thanks for always making these, Adam, I’ve enjoyed them for many years now
I think we’re getting a successor by Spring ‘25 at the latest, but nothing this calendar year for sure
I also like it portability and versatility where I can play in docked In handheld mode, which is how I play my switch, mostly because of that gorgeous OLED screen, Super Mario, Odyssey, and super Mario Bros, wonder and breath of the wild looks stunning on the OLED screed.
and 6-7 months later we are getting Switch 2 rumours everywhere 😂
It's worth bearing in mind that Nintendo use Nvidia components in the Switch. Even with a simple upgrade it might be surprising how much it could do
They need a miracle to even catch the Series X lol
With the latest version dlss and games made tailored for its hardware. I can see the possibility of ultra, 1080pm 60 fps or 1440pm 30 fps.
Man, does time pass. I was in your live stream when you bought your Switch. Bought mine that same night.
They still sell the original model just as a V2 of it.
I just bought me one back the other day, I didn’t get the OLED because I’m mainly gonna play it docked.
Also agreed Switch 2 isn’t coming anytime 🔜!
All 3 models sell incredibly well still.
Definitely my favorite one of these "Predictions and Concerns" vids ever. Already can't wait for the next one
I always forget it came out in March; this video was such a welcomed surprise!
First time I tried to play Goldeneye on Switch, I played like Bond had too many Martini’s before the mission. 😂
I totally agree, Nintendo's move for their next "console" will probably be at most something like a Switch Advance rather than a whole new system.
glad you made this. i keep wondering what nintendo is going to do next, and when it's going to do it.
i have 141 Switch games, and i have lots of great memories with this thing, BUT, it's time to move on.
Im also very sorry to hear about your mother, I hope you will heal and find peace.
Enjoyed this one again. Now I'm at over 1700 physical switch games it's pretty insane.
Christ...

10:32 handheld CONSOLE. Handholds are still technically consoles in the sense it plays games in a motherboard and chassis.
I have just finished all your anniversary videos and watch other videos too. I love your videos.
It’s happening!
I agree everything you said about pushing gamecube. I think they will also do a OLED Tears of the Kingdom branded Switch, and why not double down on a Gamecube Classic and charge $150 for it. Everyone will be jumping at the chance to own ALL OF THE ABOVE.
It's that time of the year!!! 🥳
FINALLY! 🎉
> "re-selling every Wii U game at full price"
Yeah, that's pretty weaksauce.
Adam Koralik is a great guy and I am very interested in this video
Don’t forget the PS2 was used by many as a cheap DVD player. Many don’t like to admit it, but it’s true.
That's a fairytale. When the PS2 was launched in the UK, shops were advertising Dreamcast and DVD combo deals for £300. The same price as a PS2.
You say that, but I know people who literally used it to play movies. DVD players were like £400 back then. So a cheaper option was desirable.
@@Maurice.L.235
Sony/Pioneer/etc DVD players were £400.
Your theories and predictions are well thought out.
The Progidial Son is BACK!
Side note: I hope F-Zero GX could get the Metroid prime remaster treatment.
It literally says on Nintendo’s official website that switch is a home console. So that’s what it is,a home console that you can also play handheld.
17:05 Nintendo has a more exotic resolution than I had for the New Year
Remember some old interview, maybe it was mr.
I think Nintendo can do more with the Switch than just design;
They can licence and release different joycons; joycons which are shaped like the GameCube Controller, Dreamcast Controller, even Xbox Controller if Microsoft were on board!
I watch the old Videos because you are 100% Objective. Its rare these days.
6 years!!
I'm still in love with the switch for as weak as it is. Whatever the next console is, it NEEDS to be backwards compatible. I'd hate to lose access to the massive switch library in the future.
Nintendo switch turned out to be a great arcade and 2D game machine
I do actually watch old anniversary console videos.... But idk why...
About the Switch, i kind of agree on your vision, i think they will keep it like they did with 3DS, with just small "NEW" models coming; Lite, OLED and probably a new version in 2024.
Where i disagree is in the 3rd party games, they were complaining about switch power but still supporting for some time, but i think that's over, the gap since Series/PS5 came up is too big and people/devs already accept it, they don't even try anymore. Nobody is surprise anymore when new games doesn't have Switch version.
25:22 also during that time, you also poo-poo'd the VM Labs NuOn, the Mattel Hyperscan, the Nokia N-Gage, the Bandai Playdia, and the Sega Pico, but we don't bring any of that up
GOAT is correct! Stay UP Adam! God bless you!
PS2 was at 155, but close enough.
